Berger Earns ‘Top Performer on Key Quality Measures™’ Recognition from The Joint Commission

CIRCLEVILLE, Ohio - Berger Hospital to-day was named one of the nation’s Top Performers on Key Quality Measures™ by The Joint Commission, the leading ac-creditor of health care organizations in America. Berger Hospital was recognized by The Joint Commission for exemplary performance in using evidence-based clinical processes that are shown to im-prove care for certain conditions, includ-ing heart attack, heart failure, pneumonia, surgical care, children’s asthma, stroke and venous thromboembolism, as well as inpatient psychiatric services. Out of the 3,376 hospitals submit-ting accountability measure data to The Joint Commission, Berger Hospital is one of only 620 hospitals in the U.S. earning the distinction of Top Performer on Key Quality Measures™ for attaining and sustaining excellence in accountability measure performance. Berger Hospital was recognized for its achievement on the following measure sets: Pneumonia and Surgical Care. The ratings are based on an aggregation of accountabil-ity measure data reported to The Joint Commission during the 2011 calendar year. The list of Top Performers increased by 50 percent from its debut last year and represents 18 percent of ac-credited hospitals reporting data. Each of the hospitals that were named as a Top Performer on Key Quality Mea-sures™ met two 95 percent (95/95) performance thresholds on 2011 ac-countability measure data. First, each hospital achieved performance of 95 percent or above on a single, composite score that includes all the accountability measures for which it reports data to The Joint Commission, including measures that had fewer than 30 eligible cases or patients. Second, each hospital met or

exceeded 95 percent performance on every accountability measure for which it reports data to The Joint Commission, excluding any measures with fewer than 30 eligible cases or patients. A 95 percent

score means a hospital provided an evidence-based practice 95 times

out of 100 opportunities to pro-vide the practice. Each account-ability measure represents an evidence-based practice – for

example, giving aspirin at arrival for heart attack patients, giving

antibiotics one hour before surgery, and providing a home management plan for children with asthma. “When we raise the bar and provide the proper guidance and tools, hospitals have responded with excellent results,” says Mark R. Chassin, M.D., FACP, M.P.P., M.P.H., president, The Joint Commission. “This capacity for continual improvement points toward a future in which quality and safety defects are dramatically re-duced and high reliability is sought and

achieved with regularity. Such day-to-day progress will slowly but surely transform today’s health care system into one that achieves unprecedented performance outcomes for the benefit of the patients.” “We understand that what matters most to patients at Berger Hospital is safe, effective care. That’s why Berger Hospital has made a commitment to accreditation and to positive patient outcomes through evidence-based care processes. Berger Hospital is proud to be named to the list of The Joint Commission’s Top Perform-ers on Key Quality Measures,” says Tim A. Colburn, President & CEO. In addition to being included in to-day’s release of The Joint Commission’s “Improving America’s Hospitals” annual report, Berger Hospital will be recognized on The Joint Commission’s Quality Check website (www.qualitycheck.org). The Top Performer program will be featured in the November issue of The Joint Commission Perspectives and the October issue of The Joint Commission: The Source.

McFarland, Black and Williams named Employees of the Quarter

Linda McFarland is a Service Ambassador. She started with the system in 2002. Linda was nominated by her supervisor who said, “Linda does an outstanding job greeting our patients and families once they arrive to the Emergency Department and has also tak-en on the Lost and Found. Linda does a great job in keeping Lost and Found organized and keeps in contact with the patient or family member looking for their items they may have lost while at Berger.”

Colburn: Update on Compounding

Tonya Black is a Patient Care Tech in the Med/Surg Unit. She started with the system in 2000. Tonya was nominated by her super-visor who said, “Tonya builds relationships with every patient she touches. She doesn’t treat the patients like family - they ARE her family. She also assists with teaching new nurses and pa-tient care technicians during the orientation process. Her years of experience are priceless, but the compassion and pride are more valu-able.

Brittani Williams is a Registered Nurse in the Maternity Department. She started with the system in 2006. Brittani was nominated by a fellow co-worker who describes her as, “Always going the extra mile to make sure not only that the patient is comfortable but that the room is tidy after a shift change de-livery. Brittany always has a smile on her face no matter what is going on in the unit. Brit-tani dedicates time outside of the unit as well with teaching childbirth classes.”

There is much in the news about compounding from the New Eng-land Compounding Company (NECC) and related reporting of cases of fungal meningitis in several states. While there have been only a few cases in Ohio, and all of those have been in other areas, it is un-derstandable that the public may ask questions of you as a healthcare worker. In case you do get questions, I want to share with you that Berger Hospital has not received any of the compounded medications from the NECC. Additionally, the contract vendor that we do use for two other compounded agents has provided us a letter that they do not receive compounded medications from the NECC. Consistent with our existing high patient safety standards, Berger will continue to monitor information from the FDA and other available resources, as well as continue proactive communications with our sup-pliers and partners. This is an ongoing process that is solidly in place. Tim Colburn President/CEO

Berger’s Emergency Department again named Emergency Center of Excellence2012 Award is second consecutive, measures more than 100 key performance indicators

CIRCLEVILLE - Berger Hospital has again earned recognition as an Emergency Cen-ter of Excellence by Emergency Excellence, an organization specializing in emergency department benchmarking. Berger Hos-pital’s emergency department sees over 35,000 patients a year and is the only hospital in Ohio that has qualified as an Emergency Center of Excellence. Berger Hospital initially was designated an Emer-gency Center of Excellence in 2010, and has now been verified again in light of its continued superior performance. Eligibility for the Emergency Center of Excellence designation is based on the re-sults of over 100 key performance indica-tors linked to seven Pillars of Excellence (Safety, Satisfaction, Space, Staff, Support, Systems, and Solvency). Emergency Ex-cellence compares hospitals on emergen-cy department performance and surveys

physicians, nurses, hospital staff, medical staff, and administrators. The Emergency Center of Excellence award is verified af-ter an on-site assessment. According to Tim Colburn, Berger President and CEO, “we know when families walk through our doors, they have immediate health care needs,” said Colburn. “Our team is dedicated to pro-viding patients the highest quality care, in a timely manner. This award validates our efforts. We are proud of being awarded this distinction for the second straight time. While others may point to short-term goals, Berger’s sustained perfor-mance year after year demonstrates true excellence.” “Berger Hospital’s emergency depart-ment does a fantastic job,” said Dr. Mark Reiter, CEO of Emergency Excellence. “Physician-nurse relationships are ex-

tremely good, which translates into excel-lent patient care. Pa-tients move through the ED quickly with minimal waits.” “Our Emergency Department staff and phy-sicians are prepared for all of the emer-gency needs of families in our community,” said Dr. Brett Call, President of the Medical Staff and emergency department Medical Director. “In concert with our experienced local physicians, we can provide care for most emergencies right here in Circleville. In the event that additional care is need-ed, we have strong relationships with the tertiary centers to make transfers happen quickly and efficiently.”

Bentley Beagle and Volunteers Enjoy 106th Annual Pumpkin Show Berger’s presence at the 106th Annual Pumpkin Show proved to be a great success as positive comments are rolling in from community members about their experiences with us during the event. There were many smiles from children and adults as well as they got creative with the pumpkin Yowie Ral-lywear, enjoyed pumpkin lip balm, entered the Bentley Beagle coloring contest and lit up the crowd with the green and orange bracelets. The focus on our latest achievements as a health system – including our float showcase of the Top Performer award in every parade and the sport watch giveaway reflect-ing our nationally recognized Emergency Center of Excellence for wait times and efficiency – represented our commitment to providing the highest-quality healthcare services to our community.
