Live to see your graduation – drive responsibly

Between 2010 and 2014, 226 young driv-ers and motorcyclists (aged 14 to 24) were killed and 12,883 were injured in collisions. Although young drivers repre-sented only 14 per cent of the province’s licensed drivers in 2014, they accounted for more than 20 per cent of the drivers involved in casualty collisions.

“Motor vehicle collisions are the leading cause of death and injury for Alberta’s youth. Parents and guardians need to set rules for young drivers, but at the same time, young drivers need to drive safely and take responsibility for their actions on the road,” said Brian Mason, Minister of Transportation

Graduated Driver Licensing (GDL) is a program designed to improve road safety by creating a low risk, controlled environ-ment for new drivers, regardless of age. The GDL program ensures that new driv-ers get the support, skills and experience they need to handle the complex task of driving.

“As the grad season approaches, we hope that students plan ahead for a safe ride home and make responsible choices. Their whole lives are ahead of them,”-said Arthur Lee, Provincial Community Liaison, Students against Drunk Driving.

“Just because someone has used a cell-phone behind the wheel and never had a problem, doesn’t mean the risks weren’t there. The risks are always there and the stakes are very high. The goal of our distracted driving campaigns is to make sure that young people get that – and put down the phone while driving.” added Superintendent Ian Lawson, Offi cer in Charge of Alberta Traffi c Services, Royal Canadian Mounted Police.

Although young drivers represent only a small percentage of the province’s li-censed drivers, they have the highest casualty collision rates. Crash rates are especially high during the fi rst year of unsupervised driving. Males aged 18 to 21 are statistically more likely to have consumed alcohol prior to a casualty col-lision than any other age group.

One-third of young drivers killed in a collision were not wearing a seatbelt ac-cording to national RCMP statistics from 2010-2014. According to these same sta-tistics, more than one-half of casualty collisions involving a young driver, aged 14 to 24, occurred in the months of May through October. Fatal collisions involv-ing a young driver occur most often in September. More casualty collisions in-volving young drivers occurred on Friday than on any other day.

In all, over half of the fatal colli-

Playground fundraiser for 1913 Days

Come out and help kids play.On Friday, June 10, there will be a fundraising barbecue

along the 1913 Days parade route to support the Beacon Hill Elementary playground.

The fundraiser comes on the heels of a rummage sale last weekend that saw the charity raise over $12,000 to-wards their eventual goal of $125,000.

Lydia Walker, organizer of the events, was excited for turnout last weekend.

“We had some items donated by Laebon homes which were part of their show homes,” she said. “They were basically brand new items.

“Then we had people drop off some almost-new and gently used items that we could sell.”

The $12,000, as well as every other dollar raised going forward, will be matched by the provincial government in order to raise the $250,000 necessary to build the new playground. The proposed start date for the building project would be Spring 2017, as the ground needs to not be frozen to begin construction.

“We will hopefully have the money in place by Spring,” Walker said.

The event on Friday will be a traditional barbecue where donators can buy a hot dog, pop and chips for $5.

“We will also be selling freezies,” Walker added. All the proceeds will go towards the playground.Walker said that it is important to support this cause

because “just to support the local community and the kids that will be attending the school.

“Our kids need activities at school. They can get exer-cise and have things to play on.”

She added that they are also looking for people willing to sign up and volunteer for future events.

Pancakes and fi re trucksNew fi re hall opens during 1913 Days

Hopefully there is a kennel for the fi re dog at the fi re-fi ghters new home.

On Saturday, June 11 from 7:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. – the Sylvan Lake fi re department are opening the doors of their new home and cooking up some pancakes for Sylvan Lakers.

According to Fire Chief Cliff Brausen, the grand open-ing fortunately came right during 1913 Days.

“We didn’t really know when we were going to be in the facility because we were waiting to lay the asphalt,” he said. “Mother nature played along – we had a beauti-ful Spring – and the asphalt plan was fi red up.

“We fi gured that was a good time. 1913 Days. Everyone is out and about and enjoying the festivities.

The breakfast will also include guided tours which are graciously being provided by the signifi cant others

of the fi refi ghters while the fi re crew themselves serve breakfast.

“They will have information about the building and what the rooms and equipment are designed to do – just a general overview of the entire building,” he said.

He added that the fi re trucks will be out and that younger attendees will be able to have a look at them.

“The big-kid adults like the fi re trucks too so they can have a look as well.”

The grand opening ceremony will take place at 10:00 a.m. where local dignitaries will present the new build-ing with speeches.

Chief Brausen added that he and his staff are very proud of the new building and are hoping that the weather cooperates.

“We are looking to have a big crowd. I’m sure people will want to check out the new facility,” he said. “I’m looking forward to seeing everybody.

“Come on out and check out the new fi re hall.”

Grand opening - The new fi re hall will be open to the public Saturday, June 11. Pancakes and guided tours will be provided to the public. TODD COLIN VAUGHAN/ Sylvan Lake News

The event, which will be held at the Community Partners Offi ce at 4936 50 Avenue, will feature more then your typical charity barbecue.

Ingrid Soanen of Community partners pointed out many ways on how people can contribute to this cause.

“We have the fundraising barbecue,” she said. “It is a charity barbecue.

“Across the street there will be a pie and cake auction. We have an auctioneer come in auctions off pies and cakes.”

Luckily, there is also a way Sylvan Lakers can contribute to this cause throughout the entire summer by donating to the garage sale.

“We hold it all summer long and what it does is raise money to keep our operations going, as well as help families in the community,” she said.

She added that it is important for people to donate to this cause because it “supports the community and we help out the community in so many different ways.”

“Play Fair, Be Nice”Reality TV is here to stay and has been with us for almost 2 decades. Television executives love this kind of programming because it is cheap to produce and generally has good ratings - a magic formula for media success.

Way back at the dawn of this phenomena - in the very fi rst Survivor a vanquished contestant stood, grabbed her torch, looked at the remaining people said...”play fair, be nice”. As she walked away I was struck by the absurdity of her parting words. In a game where dishonesty and cheating are almost essential to winning, her cry for fairness and goodness fell on deaf ears. In fact, the most boring Survivor ever would be one where everyone followed her advice. Imagine contestants caring for each other more than for themselves, or survivors adhering to the “if you can’t say anything

nice, don’t say anything at all” principal. Great bunch of people, but lousy TV. Only those who look out for themselves fi rst will be successful on these shows - kind hearted and fair minded people need not bother.

It seems as if we have become somewhat jaded by all of this. Yet, if you really got down to the nitty gritty, the people that we are most impressed with are those who selfl essly love and care for us. To matter most to someone else is a very rare gift indeed and we know it in our hearts. Jesus understood this well when he encouraged the young man to follow the two great commandments; Love God with all you have and; Love your neighbour as yourself. It may not work well in reality TV, but it is essential for Real Life.

Golfers urgently neededMeadowlands to host Urgent Care Charity tournament

It’s time again to sink some putts for a good cause.

On Friday, August 12 – Meadowlands Golf Course will be hosting

TODD COLIN VAUGHANSYLVAN LAKE NEWS

their Golf for Urgent Care Charity golf tournament in support of the ongoing push for a new Urgent Care Facility in Sylvan Lake.

After raising $28,000 in last years’ event, organizer Klaas Van Veller is hopeful that this years tournament will at least match that considerable sum.

“I would hate to say less because of the economy and so forth, but hopeful-ly we will raise at least the same,” Van Veller said.

In 2015, there was over 86 partici-pants out of a possible 144. This year to spice things up, the organizers have decided that the theme will be from the TV show M*A*S*H.

“The response that we have had so far looks very promising,” Van Veller said.

Van Veller and his team are current-ly canvasing the local area in order to drum up support, donations and sponsors.

“We are presently going around to drop off information about the golf

tournament,” he said. “If they want to golf – they can register and of course companies can sponsor a hole or do-nate to the silent auction.

“There is different prizes for each hole.”

This year, participants will have the opportunity to compete against spe-cial guest Jay Beagle from the National Hockey League’s Washington Capitals.

“He is a local boy,” Van Veller added. You can currently sign up your four-

some for an early bird cost of $549, which will jump to $600 after June 30. The cost for a single person entry is $150.

If a day at the links isn’t your forte, you can still contribute to the cause by attending the steak dinner for a cost of $35.

If you would like more informa-tion of the event, you can contact Klaas Van Veller at (403) 887-3776 or Meadowlands Golf Course directly.

“We will have a steak dinner and lots of fun,” Van Veller said. “Hopefully the weather will be with us.”

Caps off to you

The end is near.On Friday, June 3 – Ecole

H.J. Cody School celebrat-ed the 12-year accom-plishments of the gradu-ating class of 2016.

The unusually warm June day began with the students gathering at the familiar Sylvan Lake pier where smiles, pho-tos and embraces were in abundance between stu-dents, families, friends and staff. The students were afforded time to take personal photos before the offi cial pho-tographer snapped the memory that will eter-nally hang on the walls of their alma mater.

This was followed by a grand RCMP led pro-cession to the new – yet unfi nished – multiplex where hundreds gath-ered to watch the grad-uate Commencement Ceremonies.

The afternoon began

with Principal Dave Elwood – who is in his fi nal year at H.J. Cody – hosting the event and introducing the school choir to sing “O’Canada”.

Once seated the gradu-ates and audience heard from MLA Don McIntyre, who presented graduate Emma Dunsmore with the MLA Citizenship award, which was given for her considerable work for the school and in her community.

Following this, Mayor Sean McIntyre addressed the crowd from a pre-re-corded video – as he was unable to attend in per-son due to a time con-fl ict.

“Your community is so proud of you,” he said. “Your parents, your friends and your com-munity stand behind you with pride.”

He added the grads should “never stop learn-ing and embraced that there is always some-thing new to discover.”

Following the mayor’s address, Acting Mayor Graham Parsons awarded Braden Bystrom with the Mayor’s Citizenship award for service to the commu-nity of Sylvan Lake.

Karyn Barber then pro-vided the graduates with a greeting from Central Offi ce.

“As you move forward from today – I hope you recognize the things that got you this far,” she said.

She added that gradu-ates should “always re-member those that stand beside you” and that they should “take care of your-selves, take care of each other – we are so proud of you.”

Local Trustee Jackie Swainson followed these words with advice saying that “stuff does not bring joy to life” and that grad-uates should occasional-ly put down their mobile devices and “look around and see the whole picture.

“This moment will never happen again.”

The choir then, once again, serenaded the crowd with song “Only time” before graduates and audience members heard the words of guest speaker Scott McDermott, who was part of a tragic bike accident at the World Championships.

“Your friends are more important then you re-alise,” he said. “You are more amazing then you realise.

CLASS OF 2016CongratulationsCongratulations

“You are going to have an amazing life.”

Following the choir’s rendition of “You raise me up”, the audience fi nal-ly heard from the grad-uates themselves when the Valedictorians Emma Laqua and Danielle Smith.

“We are a bunch of teenagers in caps and gowns who are a little afraid of the future,” they said. “The beauty of suc-cess is that it is different for each individual. You’ll

defi ne success by working towards the goals you set for yourselves.

“Friends thank you for the memories and time well wasted.”

Before receiving their Commencement Certificates (diplomas will come in the mail fol-lowing the completion of diploma exams), gradu-ates heard from their peer Madisyn Lovelace – who sang “Don’t forget to re-member me.”

Finally, the moment that was 12 years in the making fi nally hap-pened. Graduates walked the stage and symboli-cally ended their jour-ney through high school. Following the introduc-tion by Mr. Elwood of the Class of 2016 – caps were thrown in the air and Ecole H.J Cody said good-bye to this group of young people.

Congratulations to the Graduating Class of 2016.

No Selfi e stick - Selfi es were a theme of the afternoon at the pier.

Choral sendoff - The choir, which included many grads, were an avid part of the Graduation ceremony.

Valedictorians SpeechDanielle: Good afternoon everyone. I’m Danielle and

this Emma and we’re honored to be speaking on behalf of our graduating class today. When they told us that we’d be writing your 2016 valedictorian speech, I’ll be the fi rst totell you the honest truth, we had no idea where to start. So we did what any teenager who didn’t have the answer would do; we googled it. While google brought us many templates and other cheesy ideas to use, most of the searches said the same thing; don’t be boring.

Emma: Let’s just say we’ll do our best. We are only teenagers after all; teenagers, standing here in a bunch of caps and gowns, afraid of the future. Excited too, but defi nitely a little scared. And hey, that’s okay right? I mean fear does come along with having a goal doesn’t it? And considering that we all have goals, it’s safe to say that we’ve all felt the stress and excitement that comes from working to achieve one.

Danielle: For example, all of us had the common goal of graduating today, and I would say that we all did an absolutely fantastic job of fi nding success. I’m hoping you all agree, although I’m sure you do. So let’s take a quick moment to think about what success really means. Is it the feeling of pride that follows an achieve-ment? Is it the amount of work you put into what you do? Is it the satisfaction of being able to say, “Yeah, I did that.”? Or is it a combination of all these things? In my experience I can tell you that I’m not sure yet, but that’s the beauty of success: It’s unique for each individual. You defi ne what it means to be successful; whether it be through activism, work, studies, or sim-ply pulling yourself out of bed in the morning after a late night Netfl ix binge. The idea is that years from now we will each create our own version of success and use this defi nition to push us from goal to goal; consistently seeking new sources of personal growth and achievement.

Emma: There are many avenues to take to fi nd suc-cess, for us, and for many of you as well, success in school is extremely important. Although studying may not be everyone’s idea of a good time, for us it was about reaching a goal, and it was about learning and opening new doors. As we have progressed through high school we have grown as individuals and contin-ued to evolve our defi nition of success. However, while we were exploring the wonderful world of textbooks and doing way more math problems than necessary, many of you were out exploring the world and discov-

Class Valedictorians Emma Laqua and Danielle Smith gave a moving speech at the graduation ceremonies.

The nature of motivation and successEMMA LAQUA AND DANIELLE SMITH

ering all it had to offer.Danielle: Perhaps you’re a devoted dancer and your

passion motivates you to spend hours perfecting your technique and fi nal performance before a competition.

Emma: Maybe you can bring characters to life, audienc-es to tears, and classmates to laughter with your talent for drama.

Danielle: How about athletics? Does your competitive drive push you to be a better teammate and allaround

player?Emma: Do you enjoy art where makeup brushes and

pencils teach you the value of patience and creativity? Do you identify with the world of music and the classical inspiration it has to offer?

Danielle:Or, you know, you’re like Wyatt and you just want to grow a really cool beard. No matter what path you take, you build your own defi nition of success by working towards the goals you set for yourself. It’s this desire that continuously pushes you to achieve bigger and better things, but remember, you’re not in it alone.

Emma: Spoiler alert, Harry Potter didn’t defeat Voldemort without some help. He, like many of us, had mentors, professors and friends that encouraged him and provided advice in times of adversity. Although we never received our letters when we were 11, today we’re receiving our high school diplomas and this wouldn’t have been made possible without the support of our parents, teachers, and friends.

Danielle: Teachers, thank you for educating us in re-

spect and integrity; for encouraging perspective and generosity; and for the lifelong knowledge that mito-chondria is the powerhouse of the cell. Parents, thank you for the unconditional support that allowed us to explore and discover what makes us who we are. We thank you for the opportunity to try new things and for the way you listened to our problems and caught us when we fell. Friends, thank you for some of the great-est memories of laughter, fun and time well wasted. Without you, our high school experience would have never been the same.

Emma: As we head to the end of the semester and beyond high school remember that it will take deter-mination to accomplish your goals. No one’s success, from Steve Jobs to J.K. Rowling, ever came without a lot of persistent hard work. But that’s not the whole story. “Working hard is important. But there is something that matters more: Believing in yourself.” Believing in yourself is the key to motivating yourself to push through the obstacles you face and the doubts you may have about your path.

Danielle: Graduates, from this moment forth, treat every second as an opportunity. Utilize the skills you’ve learnt here and extend them into your everyday life. Choose to be kind, be generous, be ambitious, innova-tive, strong, and proud; be whatever you see fi t; mostly though, chose to pursue what success means for you. “For it’s our choices that show us who we truly are, far more than our abilities.” No matter the uncertainty of the coming years, continue to walk your avenue of success; and do so with the grace and generosity that will bring happiness to yourself and those around you.

Emma: Thank you everyoneDanielle: And congratulations to our 2016 grad class!

MARKET UPDATESylvan Lake sales in May kept pace with April, but remained well below 2015 levels. The number of active listings is up slightly over last month, but unlike most central Alberta markets, slightly lower than last year at this time. The majority of sales activity last month was in the lower price ranges which is to be expected in this economic environment. There does seem to be adequate choices for buyers in the lower prices, except in the $300,000 - $350,000 range where the sales to listing ratio has moved that part of the market into balance. There is good news for home sellers ahead. Oil prices briefl y climbed over the $50 US mark last week. And, falling worldwide production combined with higher demand is forecast to push prices higher in coming months. Many economists are suggesting that the Alberta economy is very near bottom and should start to recover going into the second half of the year. Of course, that isn’t necessarily good news for home buyers.Low interest rates and an amply supply of available homes make this a very opportune time for buyers to take advantage of a situation that we don’t normally experience in Alberta, and that likely won’t last - a market where buyers have the advantage.Call us for detailed market information for Sylvan Lake,Red Deer, Blackfalds, Lacombe, Penhold or Ponoka.

Municipal Development Plan

and Land Use Bylaw Review

We are now entering an exciting stage of the Municipal Development Plan (MDP) and Land Use Bylaw (LUB) review process with the second round of public meetings scheduled for June 2016. The MDP will guide how the County will grow and develop over the next 10 years, and will influence the policies that further regulate development under the County’s LUB.

The County gathered your vision for the future during the last set of interactive public meetings in February and March 2016, and now we want you to decide on policy options. The upcoming June meetings will incorporate the use of Audience Instant Response Technology where you can receive immediate feedback in response to the policy options proposed. Come share your vision for the community and hear what other community members have to say as well!

Red Deer West 4H Beef Club’s year is wrapping up

We had a great time at the mock show and judging day at the Benalto Ag Center on April 23. Mock show is a great opportunity for junior members to get used to the feeling of showing their calf. Mock show is also an opportunity for the older members to teach the younger members tricks and skills to make showing easier and for them to have more time with their own animals. The club also did consumer judging where we learned to judge stuff like cattle feed, granola bars and calves. After Mock show we had a senior member show us how to clip our animals. We learned lots and had a great time.

This year, our annual highway cleanup was held on May 14. Together the club cleaned Highway 11A from the Sylvan Lake traffi c circle to Range Road 281. We started at 8:00 A.M. and fi nished at about 12:30 p.m.. After we were done, we all had snacks and called it a day. Thanks to everyone who helped in this event.

This 4-H year is almost over and we will be getting ready for the show and sale by cleaning and grooming our animals. Thank you to all our buyers and sponsors from last year, we would greatly appreciate it if you came by to our show and sale once again. It will be on from June 3 to June 6 at the Parkland Ag Center on the Westerner Grounds. We hope to see you there!

Central Alberta Bucs’ win a tight one over Fort Mac

Remaining competition all winnable games

SPORTSSPORTS

In a game with huge playoff implications, the Central Alberta Buccaneers came into their June 4 matchup against the Fort McMurray Monarchs with one goal – win.

In the 2015 season, the Monarchs handed the Bucs two losses, one of which was a semi-fi nals exit from the playoffs. Those factors, combined with the black and blue style of both teams, were the perfect recipe for a hard-hitting, high-scoring slugfest.

The entire game, that lasted well over three hours, “was a war,” said Ryan Miller, linebacker. “Fort Mac has a few dangerous weapons that can score on any play.”

In addition to their high talent, the Monarchs are known for their size and physicality. “It was by far the most in-tense Bucs game I’ve played in my seven years with the team,” added Tylor Johanesson, cornerback.

Due to the aggressive play of both teams, it wasn’t long before the fl ags hit the turf. Mental lapses and emotion got the better of both teams; “we shot ourselves in the foot with unnecessary penalties,” said Pierre Konan, o-lineman.

He added “That needs to change.” In spite of the pen-alties, “it was one of the top 5 games [Pierre] has ever played in.” A claim that carries weight coming from an ex-McGill University ball player.

The score see-sawed back and forth for the entirety of the game. As soon as one team appeared to have the edge, the other clawed their way back and took momentum.

It came down to the fi nal two minutes on a Buccaneer offensive drive. The pirate crew was on the Monarch’s 40-yard line on third down – it was do or die. Buc QB Brandon Leyh was blitzed from all directions. Somehow, he managed to spin his large frame out of the clutches of the Monarch defenders and fi re a long pass to a wide-open receiver, Axsivier Lawrence.

“My quarterback was defi nitely a standout. If you haven’t seen our last touchdown, please head to our Facebook page and be amazed,” said Konan.

After a botched two-point attempt, the score sat at 43-42, Bucs, with 1:40 left in the game. After forcing a failed fi eld goal attempt from the Monarchs, the defense was able to hold the line for the remainder of the game, (the botched

fi eld goal was kicked back by the Bucs. Johanesson was able to cover the surprised Monarch returner).

This victory not only bodes well for Buc playoff hopes, it also marks the fi rst time they have bested the Monarchs.

There are no remaining teams in the AFL that the Bucs haven’t pillaged at one point.

The Bucs host the St. Albert Stars on June 11 at 6:00 p.m. at Lacombe’s MEGlobal Athletic Park.

The Buccaneers are dedicating their game to Big

Brothers/Big Sisters in Central Alberta. Kids and mentors will be in attendance in order to watch the pirates in action.

In order to fi nd success in week three, Konan said “We need to stay positive and stay away from unnecessary penalties. We need to keep conquering cities like the good old Buccaneers.”

Annual golf tournament aims to raise necessary funds for training

The Sylvan Lake and District Victim Services Annual Golf Tournament will be held Aug. 3 at the Sylvan Lake Golf and Country Club.

This is the 16th golf tournament held for Victim Services and it has been successful every year.

The tournaments raise around $20,000 each year. Funds raised annually goes towards training those working for Victim Services said Jennifer Plotnikoff, program coordinator for Sylvan Lake and District Victim Services.

There are 15 people working for Victim Services including an RCMP liaison, board members and advocates.

The funds raised goes towards ensuring everyone is trained and re-certifi ed with appropriate courses.

“It’s really important because what it

does is train new advocates and re-certi-fi es all of us in the courses that expire - whether it be critical incident stress man-agement, fi rst aid or other courses that need to be upgraded often,” Plotnikoff said.

This annual golf tournament not only raises much needed funds for victim ser-vices, it also provides an event where the community can get together and spend time swinging away while being social.

“It’s the community coming together and of all the community support that make this event special each year,” Plotnikoff said.

It will cost $125 to participate in the event. This includes 18 holes of golf, a golf cart, food holes and refreshments. It also includes a prime rib dinner with a silent auction.

Plotnikoff describes the atmosphere of this golf tournament as very upbeat and supportive.

This event also helps to educate people

on the important presence of what victim services does and how they serve the community.

They are an information support refer-ral.

“If community members have questions or concerns about anything in their day to day life, including topics such as domestic violence - we’re here to offer help, support

referral, information,” Plotnikoff said. She said victim services is there for the

community.“I think the public is still learning what

we’re all about,” she added.Golfers are invited to register at the

Sylvan Lake Golf and Country Club for the event.
