Staff told to include relocation of RV dumping station in 2013 budgetby Steve Dills

Sylvan Lake News

Plans to change traf-fic flow at the RV dump-ing station adjacent to UFA have been scrapped and town staff instruct-ed to look for a new location for the facility.

Councillors rescind-ed a motion from a pre-vious meeting and instead asked staff to present a proposal for relocating the facility during 2013 budget deliberations later this year.

Initially they approved a project to spend several thousand dollars to make changes to the station and erect signage so that those using it would queue on Industrial Drive rather than on Highway 20 as now

happens.However discussion

with UFA manager John Clayton prompted reconsideration. He expressed concerns about RV owners using his site to turn around and blocking other access points to the UFA site, according to notes provided to councillors.

Councillor Laverne Asselstine agreed. “If we make a change it’s going to seriously impact his business. The point is we need a proper sani-dump site.” He added it

should be a priority for the 2013 budget.

“It’s more an issue of traffic safety on Highway 20,” said Councillor Sean McIntyre. He indicated that some vehicles are stopping in the driving lane waiting to turn into the dump station

and obstructing other vehicles travelling on the highway.

“Every time I go down there there’s half a dozen vehicles sitting there. Let’s do it right, never mind the tempo-rary stuff,” said Asselstine.

by Steve DillsSylvan Lake News

One warm fall after-noon last week found Ken Brown out on his driveway painting duck nesting boxes which he’ll eventually mount near his home in Norglenwold and at other locations around the lake.

Brown, a member of three different fish and game clubs, got the orig-inal pattern from a fel-low member of the Sarcee club in Calgary — Bryce Chase.

Since then he’s been building the boxes from scrap lumber and situat-ing them where they are available for goldeneye ducks, those which nor-mally nest in cavities in dead trees.

With the number of acreages increasing and

homeowners cleaning out deadfall, places for the birds to nest are

declining. “So we’re helping them out,” said Brown.

A cavity nesting box on the lakeside of his property has had the

same pair of birds nest-ing in it for the last four years. He said it’s amaz-ing to watch them come flying full speed ahead into the box and yet amazingly stop before they hit the back wall.

Brown said the 15 boxes he made this sea-son, and was painting last week, will be attached to trees where they’re visible from a large body of water (a slough or lake) and high enough to keep preda-tors away — about 6-7 feet high. “The closer to the water the better.” He added they’re also placed a fair distance apart so the birds don’t squab-ble.

He uses 3/4 inch ply-wood, because it lasts

longer, and then paints the boxes to protect them from weather and lengthen their life. The box on his property has been there for more than nine years. (He doesn’t use treated wood.)

Once painted with a gray colour, they’ll be stencilled indicating they’re from Sylvan Lake Fish and Game Association, of which Brown is treasurer. The paint he uses is usually purchased cheaply from paint stores where they’ve mixed a wrong colour. By pouring six or eight cans together he ends of with gray.

Looking after the boxes is fairly easy, said Brown. Wood chips are added at the beginning

of the season by remov-ing a panel on the side of the box. Then at the end of the season the box is cleaned out of any eggs that may not have hatched.

Some times, he said, there are several duck eggs in the boxes simul-taneously.

Brown said he’s an avid supporter of the work of fish and game associations. He’s a member of the Sarcee club, also the organiza-tion’s in Sylvan Lake and Red Deer. After painting last week, he was com-mitted to help the Red Deer club with their casino fundraiser.

Then his next project is to build some bat boxes.

Frisbees a unique fundraising idea to assist Rotary’s Mexico wheelchair project

The delivery team for the first wheelchair delivery to Huatulco, Mexico, ten years ago included Barry Hibbert, Scott McDermott and Dale and Bonnie Ganske along with five members of the Red Deer East Rotary Club. In February another delivery is planned to distribute about 400 wheelchairs in the rural areas of Oaxaca state near Huatulco. SUBMITTED

by Steve DillsSylvan Lake News

When the need for wheelchairs in a pover-ty stricken area of Mexico was raised ear-lier this year, Rotary members in Sylvan Lake and across Central Alberta were quick to answer the call.

Now the largest con-tingent ever of Rotarians, their family and friends are plan-ning a trip to Huatulco to deliver about 400 wheelchairs in February. At least 30 people are going, said Bonnie Ganske during an inter-view last week.

She and husband Dale are residents of Sylvan Lake half the year and Huatulco the

other half of the year. They were also on the first Rotary wheelchair delivery trip to Huatulco almost ten years ago.

All those participat-ing pay their own expenses to get to Huatulco and most will be hosted in home stays with local families or snowbirds from the United States and Canada who winter in the southern climate. The trip is scheduled for Feb. 11-25 with some people participat-ing for one week and others spending two weeks. While there they’ll get to experience a bit of the local culture while assisting in wheelchair deliveries.

Ganske explained

the DIF (the equivalent of Canada’s family sup-port service agencies) approached the Rotary Club of the Bays of Huatulco and said there

was a need to access wheelchairs, asking if the local club could reach out to make it possible.

“Initially we set out

to raise funds for half a container load of wheelchairs, 140 of them, but that was quickly met,” said Ganske. Then they’d raised enough money, $42,000, for a full con-tainer load of 280 and learned they were all needed by the social service agencies they were working with in Mexico. So they raised the goal once again to purchase another half container load and have nearly accomplished

that for a total of approximately 400 wheelchairs!

The funding is not just from Rotary, said Ganske. It’s also from businesses, individuals and fundraising activi-ties. The cost of an individual chair is $150 and people still wishing to may also donate one in their name or in memory of a loved one. “Donations are still invited and tax receipts are available,” she said.

A unique fundrais-ing activity that Ganske created is the sale of lightweight, foldable frisbees that double as Huatulco air condition-ers (a hand held and operated fan). The logo on the frisbees was developed by Brenda Kolasa, a graphic designer and member of the Red Deer East Rotary Club.

At $2 each their pur-pose is two-fold, she explained. They make great gifts for kids, stocking stuffers or to pack in campaigns such as Operation Christmas Child shoeboxes.

The frisbees are

available locally at Canadian Tire, Best Body Fitness and Lakeview Computers as well as from other Rotary members. They’ve been sold by members at CentreFest in Red Deer and Shake The Lake in Sylvan.

The other opportu-nity is for people to purchase the frisbees and donate them back to Rotarians who are going to Mexico so they may be distributed to youngsters who invari-ably crowd around dur-ing wheelchair deliver-ies in various villages. This time the area receiving the wheel-chairs extends out from Huatulco in about a 100 kilometre radius through rural Oaxaca state.

The deliveries, which the Rotary members are involved with, take place in a central loca-tion in a community and become a bit of a celebration, said Ganske. In some locations they’ve been greeted by local dignitaries, bands and singers

. . . Rotary’s Mexico wheelchair projectContinued from Page 4

When the volunteers get to a community they do a simple assembly of the wheelchairs, give instructions on their use, care and how recipients can adjust them to their needs, then take a picture of each recipient in their chair with a numbered certificate. The recipients have been screened by DIF, the Red Cross or other disabled persons organizations, said Ganske.”We do all the things we can to ensure people needing wheel-chairs receive them.”

The DIF helps with transportation, customs, storage, transportation of the delivery team, and set up of sites for delivery.

The Rotary Clubs involved are working with the Canadian Wheelchair Foundation which subsidizes all ship-ping costs and inciden-tals for the equipment which is manufactured in China.

The Rotary Club in Huatulco, which num-bers about 18 members, is the host club for the project and they’ll assist with deliveries and other activities for their visi-tors.

The group going to Mexico “will find it a life changing experience,” said Ganske. “It enriches people’s lives, not just the recipients.”

She remembers one man riding to a wheel-chair delivery with his wife in the basket of his bicycle because she was an amputee. “They were so happy, so grateful, talked about how this would change her life, make it possible for her to get around their home, help their children. If they thanked us once, they thanked us 100 times and cried and cried. It’s so life changing.”

Ganske said by giving these people wheels to move around they can move about not just on

the dirt floors of their houses but get out into the sunshine.

Many of the people who received wheelchairs during past trips have been brought in on the backs of other family members or in the arms of parents.

Besides Huatulco, Sylvan Lake Rotary members have been involved in past wheel-chair deliveries in the Phillipines, Belize and South Africa.

Among those from Sylvan Lake planning to join the delivery team are Scott and Hilary McDermott, Nadine Coyne, Jack and Andrea Van Delden, Trevor and Hanna Sigfusson, Paul and Matthew Ventura, Mark and Kendra Custance and Bonnie and Dale Ganske.

Other Rotary Clubs

involved include Red Deer East, Rocky Mountain House, Lacombe Daybreak, Red Deer Centennial, Okotoks, High River and as far away as Northbrook, Illinois.

For more information about the wheelchair project contact [email protected].

The bell tolls to mark the 100 day countdown to Sylvan Lake’s Centennial on Sunday. That’s right, just 100 days to January 1st and the official historical designation of 50th Street as “Centennial Street”.

For months and months a plan-ning task force has been preparing to mark this important milestone in our community’s history.

A postcard currently circulating promotes a variety of events planned for the Centennial year.

Besides the designation and fire-works on Jan. 1st, there’s a civic cer-emony on June 8 at the multiplex featuring music and drama students from H. J. Cody High School.

June 12 is the date set for official rededication of Centennial Park.

That kicks off a weekend you’ll not to miss. Former Miss Mermaids will be featured at a cham-ber of commerce meet and greet June 14 after the Farmers’ Market, then June 15 is the “not-to-be-missed Parade of the Century, celebrating 100 years of Sylvan Lake”.

The evening of the 15th is the “Dance of the Century” where every-one’s encouraged to enjoy 100 years of dancing tunes, one decade at a time, “just like they did in the old Sylvan Lake dance halls”.

Then Sept. 8 is a community pic-nic.

Amongst all these events are many

more being planned by various commu-nity groups. It’s sure to be a celebration worthy of lots of par-ticipation by our residents. Memories

will be sparked, former residents are being invited back … what a home-coming.

In keeping with the celebration theme, the Sylvan Lake News is seek-ing historic photos, particularly those with people in them, so that we can begin publishing a picture a week through the Centennial year.

We know, of course, that Sylvan

Lake & District Archives has lots of pictures we could chose from, but we’d like to encourage residents who have long histories in our area to dig through their pictures and see if they could come up with a picture or two they feel would be of interest to other current and former Sylvan Lake resi-dents.

School class pictures, team pic-tures, and action of interesting events are all good topics. So are old scenes of the town the way it used to look.

Please visit our office with your pictures and we’ll scan and return them while you wait. All information you can provide about the content of

More than we can printby Steve Dills

Sylvan Lake News

The flow of letters on a variety of topics over the past two months has created a situation where we haven’t been able to publish everything we’ve received the same week it’s received.

Particularly with the 781-11 issue, we’ve had to restrict the number of letters and will not be publishing any letters that have been previously pub-lished elsewhere or

sent to municipal or provincial politicians and then forwarded to us for publication.

Otherwise we will continue to publish as many letters as our space constraints allow us to publish and we will continue to offer a variety of letters.

This is always a balancing act between offering our readers a place to comment on issues pertinent to them and still provid-ing enough space to cover news and pro-vide new and correct

information about things that are hap-pening on an ongoing basis.

We appreciate the concern you show in taking time to write letters, offer com-ments and debate positions. As the paper of record for this com-munity we take our job seriously and will continue to offer the variety necessary to stimulate as many readers as possible so that we maintain the strength of our publi-cation.

Column:

Terry Fox Run presents a cause worth fi ghting for I’m not quite sure when I

was first introduced to the Terry Fox Run. Whenever it was, it became an annual tra-dition during my school years. I vaguely remember pledge sheets and a ceremo-nial walk around the school field while I was in junior high. I have much stronger memories of my high school’s Terry Fox Run.

Though the run takes place at many schools, my high school adopted it as if it was our own. Teachers began talking about it during the first week of school. Fundraising forms were dis-tributed, and students were challenged to raise as much

money as possible. We had our first period

off to take part in the run. For some reason, the school had developed a tradition of wearing pyjamas to the run. I never understood the con-nection. I was too self-con-scious to wear pyjamas, but many of my classmates and teachers were not. It was not uncommon for my teacher to be wearing a bathrobe as she conducted class later in the day.

I participated in the run along with everyone else. We lined up in an orderly fash-ion and filed out of the school. The weather, at this time, was always brisk. Leaves

crunched under our feet as we walked around the neigh-bourhood and through the park. Along the way, we passed signs representing each province, symbolic of a journey across Canada.

When we arrived back at the school we were served a breakfast of pancakes or muf-fins. A DJ played music in the field as we milled around, delaying the time until we had to head back to class.

Though I liked getting out

of class, I liked the pancakes, and I liked the DJ, the real reason for the Terry Fox Run was about more than just those things.

As everyone knows, Terry Fox was an ordinary person who wanted to run across Canada 30 years ago to raise money for cancer research. He had been diagnosed with the disease himself, and lost his right leg. He began his journey in St. John’s, Newfoundland, but had to end it in Thunder Bay, Ontario when his cancer spread.

Terry Fox’s legacy contin-ues to live on, as every year people participate in the run

around Canada and around the world. According to the Terry Fox Foundation web-site, over $600 million has been raised for cancer research.

Cancer kills indiscrimi-nately. It doesn’t care how big, how old, or how healthy you are. It doesn’t care if you have a loving family and friends. It doesn’t care if you have a promising future.

While cancer has robbed many of their futures, with research, we can turn the tables and conquer it. Every step and every dollar puts us closer to that goal. It’s a dis-ease we can fight, and some-thing worth fighting for.

Hold a plebiscite on Highway 11-781 issue

Emergency care facility more important than multiplex

Dear Editor,Are you kidding me! A proposed sec-

ond Multiplex at a tune of about $21 million?

Is Sylvan Lake town council out of their mind? Mayor Susan Samson where is your head? Who thinks of this stuff?

An EMERGENCY CARE FACILITY!!!!, a life and death facility is what we need? First and foremost.

Then the rest of the goodies that bring money to this town can come in, which are fine!

Residents of Sylvan Lake and sur-rounding area, stop supporting these unnecessary proposals and taxpayers monies. Get your priorities straight!

Is all this more important than the lives of human beings?

Just like you, I was not a voice, just a reader and an ear. Until I lost Brent, I did not realize just how vital an Emergency Care Facility for this town and surround-ing area is. I have learned through this horrific experience that priorities are very important and by not placing your priorities in order of importance some-times deadly. Support me! Help me get an Emergency Facility in town first!

Thank you so much in advance to all the support I have received and to all future help.

Annie Boychuk,Sylvan Lake

Dear Editor:I feel compelled to

add my voice to the ongo-ing controversy of the Hwy. 781/11 fiasco. After reading Bob Swabey’s let-ter to the editor last week I felt he made a compel-ling argument that should be listened to by our

town council.I believe this issue has

gone well beyond reason and common sense. If we assume, for a moment, t hat A lb e r t a Transportation is correct and the safest, most effi-cient route in and out of Sylvan Lake is Highway

20 then we are assuming t hat A lb e r t a Transportation knows what is best for all of us. This is where the prob-lem lies. It may very well be that they are cor-rect but the people of Sylvan Lake do not agree.

It is the responsibility of our elected officials to listen to the electorate. There may be times that positions are not popular

but in this case the posi-tions are not even logical. The people of Sylvan Lake and area do not agree with Alberta

Transportation. It is unclear as to why elected officials cannot or choose to not see this.

As Bob Swabey stated

“it’s not too late”. Let’s end this foolishness and send it to a plebiscite!

Stop being pigheaded, look at facts, listen to people and admit mistake

Dear Editor,I have lived in Sylvan Lake for

five years now. When I go north on Highway 781 into town and come over the hill, I am awed by the beauty of the lake and quaint-ness of the downtown core. Every visitor to Sylvan Lake should enter our town from that direc-tion. Their perception of our community would be SO positive at the onset!

Unfortunately, the powers-that-be have decided that Highway 20 and the industrial park should be our gateway. Our originally quaint downtown area is being slowly decimated by some pretty incredibly stupid decisions, the biggest one being the block-age of traffic at highways 11 and 781.

I live in the Sunny Siesta RV Park at that very corner. I am a senior citizen on a limited income. My 11-year-old car could barely

navigate the potholes on Memorial Trail and now, with it under con-struction, I have even more miles to travel, which means extra gasoline to buy. To top it off, I attended a town hall meeting, regarding this issue and am told that we are paying over $6 million dollars on this road-to-nowhere!

I am told that this roadblock has cut down on the accidents at our corner, and if true, that is a good thing; but, at what cost? Sitting outside at our picnic tables and listening to screeching tires and sirens, makes me think that my not be true.

At the town meeting we were told that lights at this intersection would contravene some sort of law, that it would be too close to the lights at Hwy 20. What makes this area any different than Rocky Mountain House, where the lights are one after the other in close

succession? We were told that Sylvan will have to put up another set of lights at Memorial Trail and Hwy. 20, due to the dangers of people exiting Memorial on to the highway. We were told that this could be as high as another mil-lion. Why are we spending over $7 million, when one measly set of lights at the intersection of 781 and 11 would have fixed the prob-lem?

Apparently, even our MLA is confused over who is responsible for this debacle -— Sylvan Lake, Dept. of Transport or the people who did the “study”. Whoever it was, stop being so pigheaded, look at the facts, listen to the people who pay your sala-ries and correct this situation. It takes a big person to admit to a mistake and a big idiot not to!

French immersion growing at École Steffie Woima Elementary Schoolby Steve Dills

Sylvan Lake News

A growing number of students at École Steff ie Woima Elementary School has meant a change to the music program.

Principal Hugh Davidson said Tuesday they’ve got 502 students registered which is up about a dozen (from 489) last September in the pre-Kindergarten to Grade 5 school.

“Crowding is an issue in the sense the music room has been

Kelsey Merkley Julie Smetaniuk Nicole Chodak

converted to a class-room,” he said.

Joan Budd, the

school’s music special-ist, is travelling from class to class to offer

her instruction now.French immersion

continues to grow at a

faster pace than other classes, Davidson said. They have two Grade 1 French immersion classes and two Grade 1 English classes. The same is true for Kindergarten classes.

Despite the increase in students, he said they’ve got good class sizes which range from 16 to 30 students per class. “We’re hoping to hear from Central Office how we can sup-port the students’ needs,” he said of the Grade 5 English class which is at 30 students.

The primary focus — one of the main ini-tiatives this year — will be on reading. Another is creating collaborative learning support teams.

Three new staff members joined the school this fall.

Julie Smetaniuk is teaching Kindergarten French immersion. She taught at École La Prairie in Red Deer for four years which included Grade 4 stu-dents for one year and Kindergarten for three years.

A resident of Sylvan Lake with her husband and two year old son, she received her Bachelor of Education degree from the University of Alberta’s Campus Saint-Jean.

Nicole Chodak is the new Family School Wellness worker. She’s been a stay-at-home mom for the past six years but previously worked at Child & Family Services Authority in Red Deer and Rocky Mountain House.

She’s volunteered at

École Steffie Woima running groups with the previous Family School Wellness worker and is currently trea-surer with Scouts Canada 1st Sylvan Lake group.

Chodak has “two beautiful boys, Xanthan, age 6 and Phoenix, age 5, and a wonderful spouse”. They’ve lived in Sylvan Lake for the past two years and in Central Alberta for nine years after moving from Calgary.

She earned a Bachelor of Social Work degree.

Working as one of the administrative sup-port staff is Kelsey Merkley who grew up in Sylvan Lake and attended school here.

She’s married to Matt and had her first baby, Van, in February.

How can we keep our children safe?Dear Editor,

After reading the RCMP Notes about a man charged for approaching young boys on Lakeshore Drive I thought, “Why the hell didn’t they pub-lish his name and/or

picture for everyone to see?”

This man offered them money and pea-nuts … if that isn’t a red flag I don’t know what is.

As a parent, I’d like to know who this man

is so that if he tries to come near my child I can call the police immediately.

If anyone knows who this man is I implore you to spread the word via facebook so we all

can be “allowed” to pro-tect our children from this predator. After all, how can we keep our children safe if we don’t even know who he is?

Grade two students so much fun for teacherby Aleisha Bosch

Sylvan Lake News

Jessica Maloughney, Our Lady of the Rosary Catholic School’s new-est grade two teacher, hopes to introduce music to her students.

“Especially for the kids that have trouble with the core classes, it gives them a chance to shine in something they’re doing,” said Maloughney of option-al subjects.

Originally from Red

Deer, Maloughney played the piano and the saxophone through

school. She was also involved with choir, which she would like to bring to Our Lady of the Rosary.

“I think that would be a lot of fun for the kids,” said Maloughney.

B o t h o f Maloughney’s parents are teachers, which first exposed her to the pro-fession. She attended Red Deer College for two years, and com-pleted her teacher’s education at the University of Alberta.

“There’s nothing that I’ve ever enjoyed as much as teaching,” said Maloughney. “I love working with kids.”

Maloughney previ-ously taught at St. Teresa of Avila School in Red Deer. She is excited to be in a small-er school this year.

“It’s good to try something new,” said Maloughney. She added that she particularly enjoys working with younger students, who have a sense of excite-

ment and wonder.“I love the look on

their faces when they learn something they didn’t know before,” said Maloughney. “Grade two is so fun because everything you do becomes a big deal.”

Maloughney is plan-ning activities to cele-brate her students’ 100th day of classes, in addition to a multicul-tural day.

Listened - Grade one students Parker Sola, Marek Armeneau, and Cydney Carson listened to instructions Sept. 5 during gym class at Our Lady of the Rosary Catholic School, during their first week of classes.

Learned - Grade two students Avery Weik and Madison Johannesson were enthusiastic Sept. 5 during their first week of classes at Our Lady of the Rosary Catholic School. They attended a presenta-tion in the school’s library, where they learned that a positive attitude, listening ears, and good manners are as important as pencils and paper to success in school. Baile loves children and their curiosityBy Aleisha Bosch

Sylvan Lake News

Janene Baile, Our Lady of the Rosary Catholic School’s new-est kindergarten teach-er, is excited and a little nervous about her first regular teaching job.

Originally from Red Deer, Baile previously

worked as a substitute teacher for Red Deer Public School District before landing her cur-rent position. She attended Red Deer College for two years before finishing her teacher’s education at the University of Alberta.

“I thought it would be a nice way to make a

difference,” said Baile of her decision to go into teaching, adding that she loves children, especially their curiosi-ty. “They always have something to say and they always have a question.”

Baile will teach the class of 22 students Wednesdays and Fridays. She is helping

plan an under-the-sea unit, where students will learn about marine life and make paper crabs and fishes. She will also help organize a field trip to a local veterinarian, and to the Red Deer Safety City Society, which aims to prevent injuries among chil-dren.Janene Baile

Meadowlands Golf Club’s Drive ‘Fore’ the Cure

golf tournament last month raised $30,000 in support of breast and prostate can-cer research and Red Deer Cancer Clinic.

The event attracted 134

golfers from all over Alberta, lots from Medicine Hat and even a few from the United States, said Sarah Eglese, sales and marketing coordinator at the course.

She explained the impe-tus for the tournament was that Cathy Stober, the wife of one of the course own-ers, Randy Stober, celebrat-ed one year as cancer free after a bout with breast

cancer.Many of the golfers who

participated were friends of theirs from Medicine Hat.

The tournament, which was held Aug. 17, also fea-tured live and silent auc-tions. Donations and a por-tion of entry fees contrib-uted to the total raised for the cancer causes.

“We reached our goal and raised $30,000,” Eglese exclaimed.

The list of winners included in last week’s story about the End of Summer Hummer contained incorrect information about the Division 2 category.

Winners of the Division 2 races were the crew of Doug Stewart, Josh Brow, Michael Wuetherick and Cameron Farrington on

board Black Pearl. Second place was Anitra III with Chris

Lemke, Nathan Lemke and James Lemke. Third place went to Peter Bennet, Don Kelloway and Walter Gahler on Affordable.

Last week’s story had the first and third place winners reversed. Our apologies.

There’s a buzz of optimism when you talked to Joel Powlesland these days.

Curling season is just around the corner and there’s been much work done in preparation.

The club has grown as have the activities they’re planning for this year.

“Five years ago we had three bonspiels, said Powlesland, general manager and head ice technician at Sylvan Lake Curling Club. “Now we’re up to ten.”

“We’ve introduced adult and kid beginner leagues, and a new strictly adult beginner league. We’ve added a whole new program Sunday with extra leagues for men and mixed, family and friends as leagues — not just drop-in,” he said.

“Every year it boils down to demand. The program is going to work very, very well for the club and community.”

Powlesland attributes some of the growth to the involvement of school-age children in classes the club’s volunteers offer.

Most area schools are taking advantage of the opportunity with about 600 kids going through the six one hour sessions last season. “We give them a taste of curling, a complete introduction to curling

to get them going. From this we’ve had an increase in our family and friend leagues.”

There are also a couple of teams from H. J. Cody High School who compete against other students in the region.

Once the season gets underway, Powlesland said the curling rink is open from 9 a.m. to about 11 p.m. six days a week. Then there are also rental bookings at other times.

Leagues include seniors day-time and ladies night on Mondays, mixed and super leagues on Tuesdays, mixed on Wednesdays, seniors daytime and men’s leagues on Thursdays, stick (two person) and adult beginners fun leagues on Fridays, a morning men’s open league, mixed morning open league and family and friends fun league on Sundays. A junior learn to curl program starts Oct. 22.

The first bonspiel, the Sturling Open, takes place on Oct. 27.

Registration is now available through the club’s website, sylvan-lakecurling.wordpress.com/. It’s got plenty of information, Powlesland said.

There’s also a meet and greet barbecue scheduled for Friday, Sept. 28 where registrations will be accepted.

Ice making started this week, but league play doesn’t begin until the week of Oct. 14.

Powlesland added the club is also looking for new recruits for

the board of directors. Job descrip-tions and information are on the website.

Another reason for the opti-mism is that discussions are under-way between club members and the town for a new facility.

With the growth in the club, expectations rise every year for ice and service levels. They’re always met but with an old building its becoming more and more trying, Powlesland said.

New equipment and a new structure would open up avenues for more curling in Sylvan Lake and more tourism as a result.

Powlesland said he’s annually asked about the availability of sum-mer ice in Sylvan, not just for area elite curlers but by international curlers who’d love to spend up to six weeks practising before the sea-son gets underway.

“It’s something we’re asked to do but just can’t accommodate at present. We hate to miss out on that opportunity.”

“We used to have summer bon-spiels in Sylvan that were a huge success. Bonspiels for a week with hundreds of people coming along with spouses, neighbours. They were here for the fun and love of it.”

With a new facility he’s sure they can expand the curling season in Sylvan and attract many more tourists to the community.

Optimism evident as curling season’s just weeks away
