Family and friends were joined by nearly an entire community as they celebrated the centennial of a farm near Sylvan Lake Saturday night.
The Bystrom family farm south of Sylvan Lake played host to more
than 150 people who enjoyed an evening of music, food and fellow-ship in celebration of the family’s 100 years on the farm.
According to Pauline Lohrenz, who lives on the farm with husband Tyson and children Jemma and Karlena, it was the kind of party that comes along only once every 100 years.

really,” she said. “We had all the community, plus two sides of the family all at once, so it was something that doesn’t happen very often, and I was glad that we could facilitate that.”
While the party has been a long time com-ing — 100 years, to be exact — it was only after the Lohrenzes moved into an original home on the farm that the idea to hold some sort of celebration was floated.
And it didn’t take long to pick up steam.
“When we moved there, we knew that the cen-tennial of the farm was coming up, and we kind of thought we’d just have a Bystrom family reunion,”
said Lohrenz, a Bystrom herself. “Then as we started talking more about it, we thought maybe we should celebrate 100 years. It’s not like that’s
going to come up again for a while.”
The party’s invita-tion list quickly began to grow, and eventually included several gen-erations of family members — some of whom lived on the farm at one point — friends, neighbours and community mem-bers.
“There are some people who are getting older, and they’re the ones that actually remember the farm, so it was something that we wanted to get them to so they could explain where things had been and how they remem-bered the farm,” said Lohrenz. “Then it got bigger, and because our (Centreville) commu-nity is a fairly tight-knit community, and they all remember this farm as well, we didn’t really feel it was right not to have them come too.”
The farm has seen plenty of changes since it was purchased by Swan and Karolena Bystrom in 1913. But there are also some things that have remained unchanged, such as an original chicken house, and original barn that’s remained unmoved for over 100 years.
There’s also the original home, which the Lohrenzes heavily renovated and now live in. Continued on page 3

During their regular meeting July 14, Sylvan Lake coun-cillors:• held a public hearing on the closure of 48h Street between 48th and 49th Avenues to allow for construction of the multiplex redevelopment.
Resident Dave Camac, represented by his son, indicated closure of the road would not be in his best interests from the standpoint of future development.
A road closure application will now be submitted to Alberta Transportation along with concerns voiced at the hearing for a decision before council can deal with second and third reading of a bylaw to close the road.• approved first reading of a bylaw to designate urban reserve in Beacon Hill to public facility district. Rezoning will facilitate development of a school by Chinook’s Edge School Division. The area is bounded on the south by Beacon Hill Drive, on the west by Brookstone Drive and on the north by houses on Bowman Circle. A public hearing will be held August 11.• directed staff to proceed with design and tendering for Lakeshore Drive Phase 5 at an amount not to exceed the approved budget of $1.9 million excluding GST.

During subsequent discussion the motion was amended to just deal with 33rd Street within town boundaries from Highway 20 west to where it flows into Lakeshore Drive.
Parsons requested Alberta Transportation be approached about putting ‘to Lakeshore Drive’ on signs coming off of Highway 2 at 11A and coming off Highway 11 just east of Benalto.
The rationale, he explained was that when going to Edmonton there’s a sign that says Pigeon Lake north shore. “It makes you think there’s really something there.”

As for the future of the farm, Lohrenz has plans for she and her husband to raise their children on it while at the same time running their oilfield service company.
They have no doubt that it will remain in the family for genera-tions to come.
“We’ve gotten this far, so it might as well,” she said. “That is the goal.”
Whether it will ever again see a party like Saturday’s, however, remains uncertain.
“You kind of have to look at those things and say it’s not going to happen again,” said Lohrenz.
“It’s a good reason to celebrate, and I don’t think that people cele-brate agriculture enough, so you should take the opportunity if you have it.”

Fine weather favoured the crowds at Benalto’s Fair and Stampede on Tuesday and Wednesday, July 24-25, and the 28th annual event may be numbered as one of the best the soci-ety has held. Pauline Tremblay of Red Deer, rep-resenting the C.G.I.T., was crowned queen of the 1964 Sylvan Lake Regatta at the hootenanny at the school
Saturday evening. Past president of the Regatta Board, Jim Wolks, placed the crown on her head and presented her with a bouquet of flowers as about 500 people looked on.
Lee Ann Schamber of Sylvan Lake was runner-up and Jacqueline Gallagher of RCAF Station Penhold placed third.

Following two days of beautiful weather Friday and Saturday, Sylvan Lake’s fifth annual regatta was literal-ly blown out of the water on Sunday as high winds whipped the lake into whitecaps which broke over he pier for most of the day.
Dear Editor,The following is an open letter sent to the mayor of
Sylvan Lake, which we would be pleased if you were able to publish.
Mayor Sean McIntyre,I am writing with regard to the recent overturning
of a Municipal Planning Commission (MPC) decision regarding a secondary suite in the cottage area.
First, some background. As you are aware, in recent weeks and months, there has been considerable discus-sion regarding the whole concept of secondary suites in Sylvan Lake.
At a recent MPC meeting, a secondary suite was proposed for a 30 foot lot in the cottage area, which was to be a rental unit, both upper and lower suites. As a result of the rules governing the MPC, community input was allowed, notification of neighbours was required. The development officer was strongly in favour of approval of this development, and in state-ments mentioned that of the many property owners who expressed concern regarding the development, several were not full time residents of the area. It was pointed out by residents at the meeting that these property owners were in fact just that, property own-ers, and taxpayers. The MPC, after hearing the various presenters’ concerns regarding density and parking decided to disallow the development on the grounds that it was unsuitable for the area, which is designated as R5, with the specified purpose: “To provide an area for low density residential development in the form of detached dwellings and compatible uses, herein listed, on narrow lots.”
Shortly afterward during a town council meeting, a bylaw was presented to council for approval, which would have given the development officer complete decision making power regarding the granting of per-mits allowing secondary suites as discretionary uses in the town. This bylaw would mean that there would be no notification to neighbours of a proposed develop-ment, no community input, and no discussion. The decision would be made based solely on the exact defi-nitions of then current Land Use Bylaw (LUB). Council debated this issue, and listened to several members of the community who presented their views and con-cerns regarding the process. The previously mentioned permit application was discussed, and it was shown that with the MPC retaining authority for approval, the outcome was the reverse of what it would have been had the development officer been empowered to make the decision.
Council continued the debate, and discussed the entire issue of the definition of secondary suites within the LUB. The terms “secondary suite” and “duplex” were discussed, as well as the restrictions placed on secondary suites in other jurisdictions, where the owner of the property must occupy one or the other of the suites. It was determined that a review of the LUB and in particular a review of secondary suites was required, and the proposed bylaw was defeated unani-mously, leaving the decision authority with the MPC,
and confirming the notion that the community was an important part of the decision making process. It was clear that council felt that secondary suites needed to be re-visited, and that it was a serious issue.
The developer/owner of the 30 foot lot appealed the decision to the Development Appeal Board (DAB).
At the Development Appeal Board meeting, resi-dents and the developer presented their arguments. The developer pointed out that many of the property owners who were against the development did not reside in the area. It was then pointed out by a resident that the developer did not reside in Sylvan Lake either, and had no intention of residing in either of the two rental family units to be built on the narrow lot. The developer then stated that the cottage area was not special and had no particular protection against this sort of development. I personally believe that the area does have protection, based on the definition of R5 zoning, that being low density.
The appeal was granted, and the decision of the MPC was overturned.
Mr. Mayor, you were a member of the three person appeal board.
Another member of the Development Appeal Board is the husband of the Town of Sylvan Lake’s chief administrative officer, an outrageous conflict of inter-est.
I am deeply concerned and disappointed that in that position, you have apparently agreed that the cot-tage area is not different, is not special, and does not require protection. You are aware of the concerns of not only the residents of the area, but also of the coun-cil regarding the entire issue of secondary suites, yet you have agreed to go against the wishes of the community, disre-garded the concerns of your own council, and ignore the clear unan-imous decision of the MPC.
I, and the residents of the cot-tage area, fear for the future of our neighbourhood, when the mayor of our town seems oblivious to the nature and character of the oldest and most delicate area within our community.
The cottage area of Sylvan Lake is where Sylvan Lake began many years ago. It is a heritage area, that historically remains as an area of small, single family dwellings, some occupied year round, others only during the summer months. The cottage area is unique in the province of Alberta. This area is undergoing change, as many of the older units are being replaced with new homes, but in the vast major-ity of cases, these new homes are designed to fit into the cottage area environment.
The cottage area, due to its character, also maintains higher property values, and thereby tends to have higher municipal tax bills for the owners. A change to that character, by filling the neighbourhood with duplex-like developments will clearly lower values of surrounding properties, and lower tax revenues for the town. The infrastructure of the cottage area is also a feature of its character. The streets are narrow, and parking is at a premium. This is not a complaint, as it is my belief that residents want it to remain that way. High density housing in such an area is entirely inap-propriate.
Mr. Mayor, I speak on behalf of the property owners of the cottage area when I say we are distressed by this decision, taken in full knowledge that in the near future there will be a complete review of the current LUB, and specifically the definition and suitability of secondary suites. It is in effect sneaking in under the wire, and creating a dreadful precedent and loophole.
I write this letter with great sadness, but in hopes the residents of the entire community of Sylvan Lake can clearly see and understand the situation. Secondary suites are not an issue for the cottage area alone, as there are many residents in Hewlett Park and Ryders Ridge who are facing similar issues. In fact, with this new loophole created by our mayor, every residential area is now at risk of high density development with no reasonable avenue of appeal.
I ask that all residents of Sylvan Lake make their views on this extremely important topic known to our council and Mayor McIntyre.

Saturday, July 26th12:31 a.m. – A 911 call was received of a disturbance on
Hinshaw Drive. A woman was banging and kicking on the door of an apartment when she injured her leg. The 30-year-old female from Sylvan Lake was transported to hospital after RCMP and EMS were called to assist. She was found lying in the hallway with a broken leg. A 33-year-old male from Bentley was also located in the
woman’s apartment and arrested after he was found to be breaching no contact conditions.
10:06 p.m. – RCMP attended a residence on Sylvan Drive after a female called to advise that her boyfriend was throwing furniture around and destroying the house. The 34-year-old male was charged with mischief over $5,000. There was significant damage to the property but no one sustained any injuries.
Four single vehicle collisions among files investigated by RCMPSunday, July 27th
6:42 a.m. – RCMP and EMS attended a single vehicle rollover off Highway 20 near Sylvan Lake. The 24-year-old male driver from B.C. was found inside the vehicle however he did not sustain any significant injuries. He was taken to hospital as a pre-caution. He advised that he had been working long shifts and fell asleep at the wheel. Alcohol was not a factor.
2:43 p.m. – Another single vehicle roll-over off Township Road 374 in Red Deer County resulted in charges being laid against the male driver. A witness driving a
tanker truck reported seeing the vehicle speeding down the highway, lose control and flip onto its roof in the ditch. The male driver told the witness not to contact authorities as he had been drinking. RCMP arrived on scene with EMS. The 49-year-old male driver from Markerville blew a caution on a roadside screening device and received a 72-hour suspension. His vehicle was towed at the scene. The male was also charged with driving at an unreasonable speed and transporting liquor in an open container.
Monday, July 28th 10:29 p.m. – A single
vehicle collision on Highway 11 at Highway 781 is under investigation by RCMP. Witnesses reported seeing a car hit the ditch at that location and its four occupants get out of the vehicle, get into another vehicle and leave the scene. Prior to the inci-dent, the driver of the vehi-cle was seen traveling down 50th Street at a high rate of speed, fail to negotiate a curve to the west and jump two sets of cement curbs destroying the front end of the vehicle.Continued on page 7

My fi rst attempt at preaching was, well let’s just say I don’t think anyone listening to it would have imagined me becoming a preacher. Honestly I’m not sure anyone even knew what I was talking about let alone what I was trying to say on the topic. I have always considered that eff ort an epic fail. But I’ve re-evaluated that moment as I’ve considered what God views as success.
I was in grade 12 and our youth group was leading the Sunday evening service. I’m not sure what he was thinking but our Youth Pastor tagged me to preach. Maybe it was because I was a pastor’s kid and he thought it would be in my genes or something. That fact contributed to a fatal mistake I made. Since dad preached from point form notes that must be the way to do it.
I got up in front of the church and looked at my notes and none of it made any sense to me. Apparently it didn’t make much sense to anyone else either because there were a lot of confused frowns from people desperately trying to follow what I was trying to say. Those poor dear people, I could see them straining for me to succeed. I think they worked as hard
at making some sense of my tangled mess as I was at trying to untangle it. I didn’t even really end the sermon; it was more like I just quit talking and sat down.
Stu Krogman, from CrossRoads Church has a beautiful understanding of success from God’s perspective. After a particular ministry that had felt somewhat less than stellar he asked God whether it had been successful and God responded with two questions: Were you willing? Were you submissive?
As I refl ect on my mangled message in light of those questions I come to a diff erent assessment of the result. Was I willing to serve God in the capacity he directed me to? Certainly. Was I submitted to his Spirit leading and guiding? To the best of my understanding at the time, yes. Therefore despite the apparent results, I am at peace with what God accomplished through that experience. Of course preparation and hard work are important, but I see those encompassed within these two questions.
So has your day been successful? Have you been willing to serve God in all you do? Have you been submissive to him in the doing? Then hear your Father say “Well done my child. I’m proud of you.”

vehicle rollover on a dirt road north of 50th Avenue in Sylvan Lake. The vehicle was found on its side against the trees. The 17-year-old driver was not injured and alcohol was not a factor. The vehicle was towed from the scene. There was no evidence at the scene to lay charges. Continued on page 8

8:58 p.m. – A 911 call was placed to RCMP after witnesses reported seeing a male assaulting a female on a boat on Sylvan Lake. Police in the RCMP boat pulled the vessel over and questioned the couple. The male showed obvious signs of impairment and a breath sample was requested. The male refused. He was arrested at the scene. A 30-year-old Red Deer male is now facing charges of impaired operation of a boat or vessel; refusal of an approved screening device; driv-ing while disqualified; three counts of failing to com-ply with an undertaking; assault; and transporting liquor in a vehicle when liquor is within easy access of an occupant.
Thursday, July 31st 12:55 a.m. – A 25-year-old Spruce Grove male is
facing an assault charge after an altercation at Fireside Lounge on Lakeshore Drive. A 48-year-old male approached RCMP to advise that he had been assaulted in the res-taurant. An independent witness confirmed the assault. The accused was arrested at the scene and formally charged.
Friday, August 1st 12:31 p.m. – RCMP
assisted conservation officers in relation to a male breaching a no con-tact order at Sunbreaker Cove Road. The 28-year-old male from St. Albert was found breaching a no contact order with his 25-year-old girlfriend. He was arrested and charged with failing to comply with a condition of an undertaking.

Sylvan Lake RCMP are requesting the public’s assistance in preventing a crime trend which involves perpetrators rummaging through unlocked vehicles under cover of darkness.
Cash, cigarettes, GPS units and other valuables have been stolen.
“Unfortunately there continues to be an abun-dance of unlocked vehicles in Sylvan Lake,” said Cpl. James Allemekinders.
Some of those caught are underage youths. The parents of these people are often unaware what their kids are up to at night.
“We encourage all parents to know where their children are and confirm with other parents or adults that their children are where they are sup-posed to be,” he said.
Recently a concerned citizen set up a video cam-era and captured three youths attempting to get into a vehicle. The culprits were unsuccessful as the vehicle was locked. The youths captured in the photo are identifiable and can expect a visit from
RCMP in the near future , said Allemekinders.

HEALTHY FAMILIES HOME VISITORPART TIME – 14 HOURS/WEEK The Healthy Family Home Visitor Program is a joint initiative funded by Family Services of Central Alberta and the Town of Sylvan Lake. Healthy Families is a free home visitation program designed to support new parents by providing information on parenting, child development, and parent – child (0 – 5 years of age) interactions. This individual will work closely with a team leader/supervisor, public health nurse, other care providers and the family to assess needs and create goals and strategies to support the healthy development of the family. The Healthy Families Home Visitor will initiate and maintain regular (at least weekly) support with families. Hours and days of work will vary depending on program need. Responsibilities: . Complete family assessment during home visits. . Conduct home visits throughout the community cluster. . Connecting the family with community resources.
. Document specifi c information, forward required information to Regional Offi ce. . Contact the family to offer the program, and acting as a liaison until home visiting begins. . Impressive results included fourth in national swim competition for Moore

A Sylvan Lake Nautical swimmer proved her ability to compete with some of the country’s best
at Canadian Age Group Championships in Winnipeg July 23-27.
Elizabeth Moore, 13, took part in six events, with her best result coming in a fourth-place national finish in the 100m breaststroke.
She was the sole representative of Sylvan Lake Nauticals, yet earned a tied position of 103rd for team points. That was out of 137 teams competing.
While she admits some of her races didn’t go as she’d planned, she relished the opportunity to compete against some of the country’s top swim-mers.
“It’s the biggest (competition) I’ve ever been to,” she said, adding that compared to other competi-tions she’s participated in, “there were a lot more competitors, and people from all over the country were there. They were pretty fast.”
Swimmers from Ireland and France also took part in races throughout the competition. Though Moore finished 6th altogether in the 100m breast-stroke, she was fourth among the Canadian swim-mers.
In preparing for the event, she maintained a well-rounded diet and trained five times a week between Monday and Friday.
She was joined on the trip by coaches Trevor and Sharon Burns of Sylvan Lake Nauticals, whom she’s trained with since she began swimming seven years ago.
Moore competed at the same competition in Montreal last year.
Although she’s enjoyed plenty of com-petitive success in her young career, she plans to continue her partici-pation in the sport for only the right reasons.
“At the moment, I just want to have fun and keep swimming,” she said.
She’ll now enjoy a summer break before returning to the pool in early fall.
Moore’s complete results from the Age Group Championships are as follows: 50m breaststroke - 15th; 50m backstroke - 10th (personal best time; club record; senior pro-vincial ‘A’ qualifying time); 100m breast-stroke - fourth in Canada; 200m breast-stroke - 12th in Canada; 50m butterfly - 17th (ranked 21st going into the race); 200m indi-vidual medley - sixth in Canada (ranked 25th going into the race; per-sonal best time; club record; senior provin-cial ‘A’ qualifying time; 14-year-old national qualifying time; 15-and-under western qualifying time.

It is with deep sorrow that the family of Lillian Holland announces her passing on Wednesday, July 23, 2014 in Red Deer Regional Hospital, surrounded by family and loved ones.Lillian was born on December 29, 1934, the eldest of four children to Axel and Sigrid Axelsen of Calgary. There she took her schooling and was active in church and taught Sunday School. After
completing high school she spent one year in California working in the offi ce of Child Evangelism Fellowship. Upon her return she was married to Ivan Holland in 1956 and they enjoyed a wonderful marriage of 57 years. From this union came four daughters: Susan, Donna, Jill and Terri. After living in Red Deer for 5 years, Ivan and Lillian moved to the farm in the Centreville district where she lived until her passing.Lillian was predeceased by her parents and daughter Donna. She is lovingly remembered by her husband Ivan, daughters Susan (John Smith) of California, Jill (Ron Shenk) of Pennsylvania and Terri (Chris Zimmerman) of Centreville; grandchildren Lucy, Nina and Nicole Smith; Jesse (Laura), Cory, Ellie and Emma Shenk; Anna, Dallas, Naaman, Anthony, Reyna, Elias and Noah Zimmerman. She is also remembered by her siblings Ingrid Sylvester, Doreen (Allen) Holland and Gerald (Sarah) Axelsen as well as numerous nephews and nieces and close family and friends.A private family burial was held at 11:00 am at the Lakeview Cemetery in Sylvan Lake followed by a memorial service at 1:00 pm at the Benalto Baptist Church on Saturday, August 2, 2014.In lieu of fl owers, those wishing to make a memorial donation in Lillian’s honour may do so to the Benalto Baptist Church Benevolent Fund.

Competition tough but Lynn made cut, finished 41st in national tourneyBY REGAN LYNN

Niagara Falls, Ontario offers visitors a myriad of activities, from the obvious scenic views or tours of the falls, to shopping, to visits to the casi-no, but those were low on the priority list of junior golfer Jaxon Lynn (16), a member at Sylvan Lake Golf and Country Club, who was participating in the 2014 Canadian National Junior Boys Championship (July 28 - August 1).
For the tournament, Lynn and 156 other boys (ages 14 to 18) played at the Legends on the Niagara: Battlefield course, about 10 minutes out-side of Niagara Falls.
The Battlefield course featured a nice mix of wide links-style holes with generous undulating fairways and greens that are bound by dense forest and brush. Fairways that sweep across a gently contoured countryside give the golfers some
breathing room both off the tee and as they approach the green, but there are many bunkers and water hazards throughout the course, which come into play. It played quite long for the players (7,300 yards).
Although the week was forecasted to be hot and muggy, the tournament had its share of inclement weather. Early practice rounds were hindered by wind and rain. Instead of playing 36 practice holes, Jaxon played only 27 holes to pre-pare for the tournament, his first of this magni-tude.
An early tee time for round one greeted the players with overcast conditions, but the sun even-tually decided to make its presence felt as the round progressed. A steady round left Jaxon with a score of 72, even par for the day. He was tied for 17th after round one, with the leader shooting an incredible score of eight under.
Mother Nature reared her ugly head for round two. Conditions were wet and play was suspended
early on because of lightning and rain. Competitors on the course were removed and had to wait about five hours before being allowed to go back on to the course. Then play lasted for approximately 15 minutes before it was eventually halted for the day. Jaxon had an afternoon tee time and waited most of the day for updates about when his round would begin.
Ultimately, he started his second round a day late, after other players on the course finished their second round. Weather for round 2 was very breezy, but sunny. The course was very hectic after round two was fin-ished, as golfers waited around to see who made the cut. Jaxon shot an 80. He was simultaneously disappointed with his score, but was relieved to make the cut and continue his tour-nament.
Round three started just after 5 p.m. for his threesome and they completed 15 holes before the golfers were called in due to visibility issues. Wind picked up the pace in the early
evening, but the sun was out and the sky was clear. The next morning, the round (3 holes) was completed after an early start. Jaxon shot a par 72. Even though he was “throwing darts” at the pins, he was unable to capital-ize by missing some relatively man-ageable putts.
There was a relatively quick turn-around after round three was com-pleted, so the tournament could con-tinue to be on pace. Going into the final round, the weather was the best it had been all week. Sunny, but muggy, it felt like plus 37. Finishing with a score of 74, Jaxon tied for 41st.
Overall, the visit to Niagara Falls was a positive occurrence. Coping with weather issues, delays, a tough golf course, and quality competition added to the experiences gained by Jaxon at the tournament. Hopefully, he will have the opportunity to par-ticipate in this event next year and he will be able to utilize what he has learned moving forward. He also appreciated encouragement and sup-port from family and friends.

Benalto Shadow Riders 4-H members had another successful year as they wrapped up with their regional horse show in Red Deer on May 31-June1st.
Members of the club enjoyed a weekend full of fun competition. The club entered two drill teams into the annual competition this year.
The club was excited as their junior drill team came home with fifth place and their senior drill team came home with first
place. The club would like to thank all of their
instructors and clinicians who have helped them improve throughout the year.
The club will continue to fundraise throughout the summer.
Achievement day was a great success as
members celebrated the year’s accomplish-ments.
If you are interested in joining the Shadow Riders 4-H club for the coming year, registration day is Sept. 14th at the Benalto Ag grounds from 1-3 p.m.
