Workers will accept data intrusion forbetter job security, new research showNEARLY a third of young people said theywould be happy for their employer to accesstheir personal information, such as socialmedia profiles, as a report into the future ofwork predicts a rise in staff data monitoringover the next decade.

PwCs report The future of work: Ajourney to 2022 said that the increase inemployee data analysis will be driven by em-ployers keen to understand what affects theirworkforce productivity.

Employers would use this information tobetter understand what motivates their work-force, why talented individuals leave and howto reduce sickness absence.

The report predicts that this kind of dataanalysis will grow as Generation Y, who havegrown up with this kind of data sharing andaccept it, enter the workforce. By 2020, Gen Y

(born in the 1980s and early 1990s) will makeup about half of the workforce and the re-search showed that 36 per cent of this groupsaid they would be happy to share personalinformation with their employer.

The report revealed a number of predic-tions for what the future of work might looklike, based on a survey of 10,000 workers(2,000 in the UK) and 500 HR professionals

globally. It found that technology is seen byworkers and HR professionals as the biggestfactor in the transformation of the workplaceover the next five to 10 years.

More than half (58 per cent) of HR profes-sionals said they are already preparing forthis shift, while a further quarter said theywere ready now.

Interestingly, the majority of workers (64per cent) see technological advances as a way

of improving their job prospects, however, 12per cent said they are worried about the ef-fect it will have on their jobs. For example, aquarter of workers are worried that automa-tion is already putting their job at risk, theresearch revealed.

And the report said that this shift towardsmore reliance on digital technology is alsodisrupting the traditional nine to five office

environment as people are now contactable 24hours a day, seven days a week. This changegives some employees the flexibility theywant, while for others it means they facehaving their non-work hours invaded withtexts, emails and phone calls from their bossor colleagues. The report said that more thanhalf (59 per cent) of people are prepared to bealways available via technology in return forsecure employment and this rises to nearly

two thirds (64 per cent) of Generaers. Anthony Bruce, HR workforcleader at PwC, said: Just as adveretailers are using data from custonline and social media activity totheir shopping experience, organicould soon start using workers pedata (with their permission) to meanticipate performance and reten
