JUST FOR NEW PLAYERSHave you discussed?

By Brent ManleyAnother true story from a tournament: An

experienced player ran into a newcomer heading for the restroom. As they entered their separate stalls, the newcomer was heard to say, “Whew! I am so glad to be somewhere where I know what I’m doing.”

On the subject of knowing what you’re doing, have you discussed how your partnership handles two-suited hands in competition? The discussion should include how you use these conventions and how you cope with them.

There are many conventions for describing two-suited hands. The two you will likely encounter and use are the Michaels cuebid and the Unusual Notrump.

The cuebid named for its creator – Mike Michaels – can be used over an opening of a minor or a major. Over a minor, the cuebid indicates possession of both major suits, at least five cards in each. If you are ever tempted to make a Michaels cuebid with 5-4 in the majors, don’t tell anyone.

The Unusual Notrump is generally a jump to 2NT over the opening of one of a major. This bid shows the minors – at least five cards in each suit (same admonition as above). When used over a minor, it shows the lowest unbid suits (e.g., 1♣ – 2NT shows diamonds and hearts).

Those are the rudiments. What else have you and your partner decided about these bids?

With Michaels, does it show a strong hand, weak hand or something in between? Most experienced players employ Michaels with hands that are relatively weak and those that are strong. With the in-betweens, they start with 1♠ and introduce hearts later if appropriate.

The following would qualify as a Michaels cuebid of a minor:♠J 10 9 4 3 ♥A J 10 6 2 ♦6 ♣8 7♠A K Q 7 6 5 ♥K Q J 9 8 7 ♦— ♣5

With the first, you have described your hand, so partner makes the final decision, which brings up another point. Have you and partner discussed how to respond to a Michaels cuebid? Generally, when there is a fit, as responder you should bid as much as you feel your hand is worth immediately. No messing around. Some players use a bid of 3♣ by advancer (partner of the cuebidder) to show a

hand worth a limit raise in hearts, 3♦ to show the same in spades. You should discuss how to proceed when advancer has a good hand.

With the second example hand, you just want partner to make a preference. You plan to show your strength by bidding game in whichever suit he prefers.

When your opponent starts with a major, you will end up at the three level on all but one occasion – when the opening is 1♥ and advancer can bid 2♠. That means you will usually have a slightly better hand (in high-card points or shape) when the opening is a major, and especially when your side is vulnerable. You and partner should decide on the worst hand either of you can hold to bid Michaels over a major at unfavorable vulnerability.

With Unusual 2NT, your discussions should probably revolve around what to do when the opponents spring the convention on you.

If partner opens 1♥ and your right-hand opponent bids 2NT for the minors, what does 3♥ show? What about 4♥? What if you jump to 4♣ or 4♦? What if you bid 4NT?

When the opponents roll out the Unusual 2NT, most experienced players employ a convention known as Unusual over Unusual. There are various permutations, including this scheme: After

1Major – 2NT, 3♣ shows a limit raise or better in partner’s suit, 3♦ shows a good hand with the fourth suit (e.g., hearts if partner opened 1♠), 3 other Major is natural and non-forcing and a raise of partner’s major is simply competitive, usually not a very good hand.

You may prefer a different method for coping with this pesky convention. What’s really important is that you and your partner are playing the same thing.

West North East South 1♣ Pass 1♥ Pass 1♠ Pass 3♥ Pass 4♥ All Pass

Opening lead: ♦3 (fourth best). Bidding commentary: South’s jump rebid

to 3♥ is invitational. Think of it as showing a reasonable six-card suit with 9-11 high-card points.

Lead commentary: In the absence of anything brilliant to lead, the unbid suit is usually a sensible choice.

Play commentary: South might just as well play the king from dummy at trick one. Every so often, an ace is underled through a dummy that has shown strength.

Defensive commentary: Given the lead, West cannot have more than five diamonds, which means South has at least three diamonds. Furthermore, West is marked with the jack given declarer’s play of the king at trick one. If declarer had the ♦J, he would have played low from dummy. Also, the lead of a low card strongly suggests an honor, and the only honor missing is the jack.

Defensive commentary #2: Considering what East knows, he should play three rounds of diamonds, forcing dummy to ruff. Once dummy ruffs, West has two trump tricks as declarer can lead hearts from dummy only once.

Play commentary #2: If the defenders do not

play three rounds of diamonds, a diamond can be discarded on a spade and hearts can be led twice from dummy, limiting declarer’s heart losses to one trick.

Toiling in the GNTby Frank Stewart

Friday morning I watched a quarterfinal match in the GNT Championship Flight and was reminded of something I’ve always known: it’s much easier to be a kibitzer than a player. The deals I saw posed nasty problems, not all of which the players solved. See if you can do better.

1. Vulnerable, you hold:♠6 5 ♥6 4 ♦K Q 7 5 2 ♣7 5 4 2

Your partner opens 1♣, and you scrape up a 1♦ response. If anything, you don’t want to let the opponents enter the auction cheaply. Partner rebids 1♥, and you take a 2♣ preference. Partner then bids 2NT. What is your call?

2. Vulnerable, you hold:♠A K 8 6 4 2 ♥K J 10 6 ♦5 4 ♣5

After two passes, RHO opens 1♥. You overcall 1♠, LHO bids 2♦ and your partner tries 2NT. RHO passes. What is your call?

3. Finally, a defensive problem: ♠ Q 9 4 ♥ K 5 ♦ 9 6 5 4 2 ♣ A Q 10 ♠ K J 8 7 2 ♥ 4 ♦ Q 3 ♣ J 9 8 7 3 West North East South 1♥ Pass 1♠ Pass 1NT Pass 2NT Pass 3NT All Pass

North’s 1♠ response was like a forcing 1NT. South’s 1NT showed four spades and five hearts.

You lead a club. Dummy’s 10 wins. East plays the deuce. Declarer continues with the ♥K and a second heart. East follows with the 2 and 10. Declarer wins with the queen and leads a low spade. How do you defend?

Answers1. At the table, 2NT was passed out. Opener held:

♠A x x ♥K 9 x x ♦A J ♣A Q 10 x.

The opening lead was a passive diamond, but diamonds broke 4-2 and the rest of the deal was seriously unfavorable for declarer. The ♥A and both club honors were offside. The result was down four.

A 3♣ contract might have fared two tricks better. Responder was afraid that opener might have a three-card club suit, but opener had passed up an easy chance to show diamond support, and even if he did have only three clubs, a club contract might produce more tricks than notrump.

2. The expert who held this hand bid 3♠, passed out. The opening lead was a heart, and dummy hit with:

♠x x ♥x x ♦A Q J x ♣A x x x x.Trumps broke 3-2, the diamond finesse worked

as expected, and the heart honors were well placed as well. Making five.

It seems to me that the missed game resulted from a hazy idea of what a vulnerable overcall showed. If overcaller promised a sound hand, perhaps his partner should have raised 3♠ to 4♠; if instead overcaller’s hand could have been much lighter – and these days, some people act with rather less – he could have jumped to 4♠ over 2NT.

Missed games often result when both partners take slightly conservative positions. Neither is clearly wrong, but taken together, they breed inaccuracy, I recommend limits – as well defined as possible – on overcalling strength.

3. Your partner’s play of the ♥10 denies the jack, so you can count seven tricks for declarer: four hearts and three clubs. If you play low on the spade and declarer has the ace, dummy’s queen will score the ninth trick. But to put up your ♠K will be disastrous if you find declarer with:

♠10 x x x ♥A Q J x x ♦A x ♣K x.The player I watched played the ♠K, and

his partner followed with the 10. Fine. But then, quixotically, he led another club. Declarer, who had started with:

♠A x x x ♥A Q J x x ♦x x ♣K x,claimed nine tricks.

If a lack of clear thinking on defense is your problem, you aren’t alone. Even players in the late stage of a major NABC event can have similar issues.

MonitoringAt this and future North American

Championships, ACBL will be monitoring NABC+ events with visible, real-time cameras. The images will be recorded and will be available for later official inspection and review.

By general monitoring of the session and participants’ behavior, ACBL has another source of information that may be useful in determining facts and settling issues arising from some types of ethical and behavioral complaints or actions. Please summon a director if a problem occurs at the table.

This procedure is intended to assure everyone that the playing field is level and that misbehavior will not be tolerated.

Third hand plays . . . ?By Barry Rigal

Dlr: South ♠ K Q 7 5 2 Vul: N-S ♥ 8 ♦ Q 10 8 3 ♣ A K 7 ♠ J 8 6 ♥ A Q 3 ♦ K J 9 ♣ Q 8 5 4 West North East South Pass 2♥ Dbl 3♥ 3♠ Pass 4♠ All Pass

On this deal (rotated), you (East) defend 4♠ on the lead of the ♥10 (zero or 2 higher). Plan the defense.

While it is technically possible (if highly unlikely) that partner has preempted with six hearts to the 10-9 and the ♦A, it is surely more likely that partners has K-J-10-x-x-x and not much else --- but you’d better hope for the ♣J, too. Declarer rates to be 4-3 in the majors, and you need to hope he is 4-3-3-3. You must set up a club winner before declarer establishes the diamond suit for a club discard.

Your best chance is to let the ♥10 hold. Your partner will shift to a club, and you can continue the suit when you win the first diamond.

This was the full deal: ♠ K Q 7 5 2 ♥ 8 ♦ Q 10 8 3 ♣ A K 7 ♠ 4 ♠ J 8 6 ♥ K J 10 5 4 2 ♥ A Q 3 ♦ 7 6 2 ♦ K J 9 ♣ J 9 2 ♣ Q 8 5 4 ♠ A 10 9 3 ♥ 9 7 6 ♦ A 5 4 ♣ 10 6 3

If you play the ♥A and shift to a club, you can defeat the contract, but switch the ♣9 and ♣6 and the only defense is to duck the opening lead. Also note that if declarer has ♥K J x, he rates to be able to pitch his likely club loser on the ♥K if you take your ♥A at trick one, so the duck won’t cost.

New Life MastersAfter exhaustive efforts, Jule Greene of Macon

GA is a Life Master! Greene, in his 90s, won the .7 gold he needed playing in the knockouts with Andre Asbury from Warner Robbins GA, Jim Wall from Byron GA, Sean Gannon from Decatur GA and Wendy Leverett from Lincolnton GA.

Sandi Foreman of White Plains NY became a Life Master and a Bronze Life Master in the Thursday-Friday Side Game Series playing with partner Nancy Molesworth, also of White Plains. Foreman earned 14 gold points in the contest, more than the 12 she needed for her gold card.

Electronic Device Policy The electronic device policy at NABCs has been

revised to allow players to bring electronic devices such as cell phones into the playing area provided that such devices are turned off.

Further, any such equipment must not be visible during the session.

The policy applies to all pairs, team members, captains, coaches, kibitzers and play recorders, except those designated by the ACBL and are in force throughout any actual playing session or segment of play.

A violation of the policy will result in an automatic disciplinary penalty of one full board (or 12 IMPs at that form of scoring) for the first offense. A second offense will result in disqualification from the event for the pair/team. Kibitzers violating this policy will be removed from the playing area for the remainder of the session.

Convention card reminderEach player is required to have a convention

card filled out legibly and on the table throughout a session. Both cards of a partnership must be identical and include the first and last names of each member of the partnership.

If a director determines that neither player has a substantially completed card, the partnership may play only the Standard American Yellow Card and may use only standard carding. This restriction may be lifted only at the beginning of a subsequent round after convention cards have been properly prepared and approved by the director. Further, the partnership will receive a 1/6-board matchpoint penalty for each board played, commencing with the next round and continuing until the restriction is lifted. In IMP team games, penalties shall be at the discretion of the director.

If the director determines the partnership has at least one substantially completed convention card but has not fully complied with ACBL regulations, the director may give warnings or assign such penalties as he deems to be appropriate under the circumstances.

The objective of these warnings and penalties is the encouragement of full compliance with ACBL regulations.

Pros and Cons?By Barry Rigal

The bridge world, as a cynic once said, is made up of pros and cons. Some people are both, of course, and you certainly wouldn’t want to bet that Gunnar Hallberg couldn’t get into a revolving door behind you but get out of it in front of you.

Witness the following exhibit: Dlr: South ♠ A K 10 5 2 Vul: None ♥ Q 6 5 ♦ 8 5 2 ♣ Q 7 ♠ 7 3 ♥ K 7 ♦ A K J 10 6 3 ♣ 9 4 3 West North East South 1♠ 2♦ 4♠ 5♣(1) 5♦ Pass 5♠ All Pass

(1) May be lead-directional with diamond fit. What would you lead?Anyone could lead a diamond: Our hero fished

out the ♣3.The club went to the queen, king and ace.

Declarer led a spade to the king (East following) and a heart to the jack and king.

West triumphantly returned a club, and this was the full story: ♠ A K 10 5 2 ♥ Q 6 5 ♦ 8 5 2 ♣ Q 7 ♠ 7 3 ♠ 9 ♥ K 7 ♥ 9 8 3 ♦ A K J 10 6 3 ♦ 9 4 ♣ 9 4 3 ♣ K J 10 8 6 5 2 ♠ Q J 8 6 4 ♥ A J 10 4 2 ♦ Q 7 ♣ A

Hallberg was declarer. Note his 5♦ gall.Doubling 5♣ for plus 100 would have been

almost as big a zero as minus 50. Plus 450 for North-South was worth all the matchpoints.

The InsiderAtlanta welcomes the world as the 3rd World

Youth Open Bridge Championships get started in the appropriately named International Ballroom. The WBF, the ACBL and the USBF all came together to plan what promises to be a great event. The Insider checked out the conversion of the room from YNABC to WYOBC. It was interesting to watch the screens being laid out. The North American set-up crew placed the tables. The International Directors adjusted. The North Americans re-adjusted. When the Insider left, international relations had been restored.

Have you been to the Peach Pit? The peach pit is, of course, in the center of the peach. And, the Peach Pit is the center for social activity at this NABC. Jack, Becky and the team have a great variety of food and entertainment for your viewing and participatory enjoyment. From yoga to piano players, from a guest speaker presentation of the offerings at the art museum, whatever your interests are, there will be something for you. And, if you just want to sit around and discuss why your partner abandoned you on that slam attempt, the Peach Pit is the place for that too. Check page two of this Daily Bulletin for more detail.

Slow PlaySlow play, as opposed to careful or thoughtful

play, is discourteous to your opponents, and to all other competitors as well. Players and pairs who take more than their allotted time are subject to penalty.

In general, pairs who are rarely late will be warned while pairs who are habitually tardy and/or pay no attention to time limits will be penalized.

Thanks, volunteersBy Bryan Delfs, Co-Chair

It can’t be said enough how important volunteers are to the success of an event, and our Youth NABC is certainly no exception.

I’d like to thank all of the parents who are helping to get their kids, and I’m sure many other kids, to the places they need to be. We appreciate your watching over each and every one of them.

I’d next like to thank our volunteers, who are working registrations, partnerships and other various roles. You are the ones ensuring that we know who has arrived and that they have what they need in order to play.

Finally, I’d like to thank Patty Tucker, who is the Youth NABC Chairman. Patty was the chair for the very first Youth NABC, and was the one who has set a tradition for other Youth NABCs to be held over the years.

Thanks to everyone for their continued volunteerism and support. We certainly appreciate it and I know the kids truly enjoy the experience!

Winners of the Saturday Youth Swiss Teams: Burke Snowden, Richard Jeng, Murphy Green and Andrew Jeng.

Second place in the Saturday Youth Swiss Teams were Christian Jolly, Oren Kriegel, David Soukup and Hanak Berk.

Finalists for the Sportsmanship Award: Tanner Hess, Alec Zhan and Victor Lamoureux. Zhan won.

Zhan takes Sportsmanship Award

Each year, players at the Youth NABC are asked to vote for the player they think best exemplifies sportsmanship during the competition. After two days of voting, three finalists were chosen for a final ballot: Alec Zhan, Tanner Hess and Victor Lamoureux.

Zhan came out on top, but only after a glitch that had Tournament Director Nancy Watkins as the leading vote getter. After players received more detailed instructions on voting parameters, Zhan won a close contest.

Green, Jengs repeat asYouth Teams champs

Last year, the Youth Swiss Teams was won by Murphy Green, Andrew and Richard Jeng, plus Arjun Dhir and Zach Grossack. The latter two did not play this year, but Green and company still prevailed, winning by 5 victory points over a squad captained by Hakan Berk.

Burke Snowden, a member of the runner-up team last year, was the fourth on the winning team this year. The runners-up were Berk, Christian Jolly, Oren Kriegel and David Soukup.

Youth Co-Chair not kidding:‘I want to see you next year!’Coming into the 6th Youth NABC, tournament

Co-Chair Patty Tucker thought there was a good chance that the record for attendance – set at the first one in 2008 – would be broken.

It happened. There were 198 players at the first championship in Norcross GA five years ago. This year, the number was 202.

Rather than rest on her laurels, Tucker wants to see another record turnout at the 2014 Youth NABC in Las Vegas.

She has a message for the kids and their parents regarding next year’s tournament: “I want to see everyone I saw this year – plus. I want no slacking off. You’ve got a year to save money.”

Tucker, the brains and the energy behind the first Youth NABC, says the success of this year’s tournament came down to the contributions of many, especially parents. “We had a wonderful group. Most of them don’t play, but they come and do whatever needs doing to make sure the kids have fun. You can’t ask any more than that.”

Some of the non-bridge-playing parents, Tucker notes, have told her they plan to take her Learn to Play Bridge in a DAY? class today.

Tucker also gave high marks to Krista Wright-Thayer, who assisted at the Youth NABC. Wright-Thayer, Tucker says, contributed energy and a willingness to do any job that came along. “She did a great job.”

Tucker says she was confident that a new mark for attendance would be set because “parents have recognized the event for what it is. They come expecting the kids to have a good time, and they do.”

Tucker says that she felt a bit sad when she looked over the collages from the first Youth NABC. Some of the young players are now too old, or some have moved away or are otherwise occupied. “When you don’t see them,” she says, “you miss them.”

There are lots of ways to have fun with cards. Just ask (top row), Jenna Strong, Vivian Lamoureux, Niresha Wanigasekara and (bottom row) Nia Everett and Cassie Varcoe.

Hi! My name is...Adithya Chimalakonda and Samay Desai.

Kristofer and Olivia Edstrom tied for first in the Saturday Morning Cardrook Pairs, Strat A.

They won the Saturday Youth Consolation Swiss, Strat B: Brandon Flaschner, Steven Petocz, Todd Cardillo and Michael Fitzpatrick.

Andrew Varcoe and Gabriel Chavez tied for first in the Saturday Morning Cardrook Pairs, Strat A, and took first by themselves in the afternoon session of the same event.

Right place, right timeWhen the opponents make a mistake, it’s

important to take full advantage. In the Saturday Afternoon Cardrook Pairs, Adithya Chimalakonda and Samay Desai took that advice to heart – and then some. Samay was South. Dlr: East ♠ A K 10 8 5 3 Vul: N-S ♥ 5 ♦ A 7 5 4 ♣ J 8 ♠ 9 4 ♠ J 7 2 ♥ J 6 3 ♥ 9 8 4 2 ♦ K 9 3 2 ♦ 10 ♣ K 9 5 3 ♣ A Q 10 7 4 ♠ Q 6 ♥ A K Q 10 7 ♦ Q J 8 6 ♣ 6 2 West North East South 1♥ Pass Pass Pass

East pulled the 1♥ bid card by mistake, and North-South did well to pass it out. Samay astutely led the ♥A, playing three more rounds to pull trumps. He then played the ♦Q, which held. From there, it was easy to collect six spade tricks. Together with two diamond tricks and five trump tricks, Samay and Adithya took all 13 tricks – good for a cold top. They can make 11 tricks in spades, but in their section no one got to game.

Officials, distinguish guests, dear colleagues, friends, and most importantly young players I wish each of you a good evening.

Welcome to Atlanta to participate and together enjoy the 3rd World Youth Open Bridge Championships.

I want to thank the ACBL and the USBF and personally Robert Hartman and George Jacobs for this great opportunity which has been given us. Not forgetting the generous, invaluable support of the ACBL Districts 7 and 9 and the Mid-Atlantic Bridge Conference and all the many other sponsors and friends of Youth Bridge.

I am sure that this will be a great event thanks to the local organizing committee, its chairman, my great friend and colleague Alvin Levy, and all the members and volunteers particularly Barbara Heller, Chris Compton and Bryan Delfs, who have worked with such commitment, passion, professionalism and enthusiasm towards its success.

To all of the workers, volunteers and organizers go our most sincere thanks: without them it could be impossible for us to be able to organise this event.

Finally, I want to note the excellent job done once again by the WBF Youth Committee chaired by my friend and colleague Ata Aydin, who deserves the success of that this event will no doubt enjoy.

I am sure that this marvelous town of Atlanta will live up to its reputation, tradition, history and culture by offering a great welcome to all of you dear friends, young players, officers, journalists and guests.

Together with my colleagues from the World Bridge Federation I am confident in being able to count on the dedication and professionalism of our staff, and on the cooperation of all of you.

I always repeat that bridge is more than fair play – it is a way of thinking and not just a way of being, and I am sure that this event will increase my conviction.

This great championship will renew once again a great tradition of friendship, solidarity, aggregation, without discrimination and barriers, exalting the true values of sport in general, and bridge in particular.

Our motto, Bridge for Peace, which is our flag, has to continue to fly stronger and still higher.

I will never be tired of repeating that, without youth there is no future for the game of bridge. Today, looking at the number of youth players who will be participating in this championship, we are particularly pleased because you are here to play once again in a friendly sporting atmosphere and a very friendly yet competitive bridge competition. This event will not only be a strong indicator for our future championships, but also a strong sign that the future of youth bridge will be strong and a meaningful indicator of the growth of the game we all love – BRIDGE.

Before closing I want to remember Joan Gerard a great friend of all of us in the bridge world. She was a great personality who lobbied strongly to hold this championship in the USA, who worked with dedication, passion and enthusiasm towards its realization, but sadly passed away few months ago.

In her honor, the Joan Gerard Youth Awards will be presented at the end of the championship.

Now dear young friends we hand over the stage to you to enjoy the championship and your stay in Atlanta.

I declare officially open the 3rd World Youth Open Bridge Teams Championship.

Ad majora.Gianarrigo Rona, WBF President

A welcome message from WBF President Gianarrigo Rona

An online qualifier last spring whittled 20 college teams to eight. Those eight had their travel expenses paid to compete in Atlanta. The field was then halved again in Friday’s Swiss.

In semifinal action, Washington beat the University of Texas 58–42 and Penn beat the University of California 83–51 to advance. In the final, Washington bested Penn 92–75. Cal won the consolation bracket 77–53 over Texas.

Gerard

to get worse, Gerard got up from the meeting to deal with the offending parties — and the noise stopped. Asked by another Board member how he would have handled the situation, Hartman responded that he would make sure he had someone on his team like Gerard to deal with unexpected problems.

In a letter read from former League counsel Jeff Polisner, he noted that “Joan has more lifetime hours of bridge administration than anyone else in history.”

Former World Bridge Federation President Ernesto d’Orsi was told by one his predecessors — Jaime-Ortiz Patino — to learn from Gerard.

“Pay attention to that lady. She’s a hell of an efficient organizer,” he said. D’Orsi also announced that the WBF has named a world youth trophy for Gerard in honor of her longtime advocacy of youth bridge.

George Jacobs, president of the U.S. Bridge Federation (a position once held by Gerard), said, “Bridge owes Joan a debt of gratitude.”

Joan’s husband, Ron Gerard, spoke at length about his spouse. Summarizing comments from many of the previous speakers of Joan’s fondness for discussing important bridge matters on the phone at all hours of the day or night, Ron quipped that there was one party dear to Joan’s heart that was absent from the gathering: “The phone company.”

Ron noted how seriously Joan took the business of running successful bridge tournaments, dealing with hotel staff and promoting the game for future generations.

Current WBF President Gianarrigo Rona, who became great friends with Gerard at the world championships in Salsomaggiore, Italy, in 1992, praised her bridge savvy but also her personality, kindness and friendship.

Host Nudelman ended the evening with a quote from Gerard: “Bridge holds us all together.”

amiable demeanor. He was named Unit 114 Sportsperson of the Year in 2002.

Jack and Claudia Feagin set the standard for what it means to be a bridge volunteer. A partial listing of Jack’s contributions to bridge include tournament chair in Atlanta for 31 Labor Day regionals, 70-plus sectionals and four NABCs, including this year. He formed the Duplicate Bridge Association of Atlanta and served as president, led the Committee for an Open and Improved ACBL, served on the ACBL Board of Governors, was named to the ACBL Goodwill Committee in 1977, served three terms as Unit 114 president as well as District 7 president, GNT coordinator and president/vice-president of the Mid-Atlantic Bridge Conference.

In addition to Jack’s history of working for the betterment of bridge, he has been deeply involved in coaching girls’ basketball for more than 17 years and has formed a nationally recognized girls’ AAU basketball program.

Jack was elected to the Georgia Bridge Hall of Fame in 1996, an honor he richly deserved.
