Yearling Sale yesterday, the highest-priced horse sold in the second session at Riverside Stables.
The Yarraman Park-consigned colt, who was catalogued as Lot 316, is the third highest priced yearling of the sale with I Am Invincible siring four of the top five lots.

Sun Bloodstock adviser David O’Callaghan told ANZ Bloodstock News that Monday's session-topper fitted the Hong Kong-owned breeding and racing operation’s criteria.
“I thought he was an outstanding colt by the right stallion with a good fast pedigree and he is the type of horse (Sun Stud owner) Mr Cheng likes to buy and he had everything we wanted,” O’Callaghan said.
“He is a lovely and correct colt who is a nice mover and had all the attributes, so let’s hope he can run.”
The colt is the sixth foal out of the winning Flying Spur (Danehill) mare Chickasaw, who has had three foals to race for two winners, including the colt's Perth-winning brother Invincible Warrior.
O’Callaghan said the $400,000 price tag was expected for a colt of his quality.
“In the market and the way they have been selling the past 12 months or so, you expected to have to pay that sort of money for a horse like him,” he said.
Sun Stud uses a number of Australian trainers but O’Callaghan said a decision on who would prepare the colt would not be made until a later date.
Yarraman Park Stud’s Harry Mitchell said the colt had caught the attention of a number of potential buyers during inspections and he was expected to sell well.
“He’s a lovely horse. We knew he’d sell well because he’s a great type. It’s a very good market here and Sun Stud, they’ll give it to a very good trainer no doubt,” Mitchell said.
I Am Invincible has had nine yearlings sell so far for an aggregate of $2,505,000 at an average of $278,333 to be the leading sire by aggregate and average at the sale ahead of Brazen Beau.
I Am Invincible’s Yarraman Park Stud barnmate Hinchinbrook (Fastnet Rock) has also sold well at the Inglis Classic Yearling Sale, with 15 lots selling for an aggregate of $1,905,000 at an average of $127,000.
“We’re very happy as vendors with the whole sale. It’s been going very well,” Mitchell said.
“The buyers are here, the market’s good and we’ve got stallions people like, which doesn’t hurt either. We’re very happy.”
Yarraman Park Stud has sold ten yearlings for an aggregate of $1,922,500 at an average of $192,250.
McEvoy purchases Zoustar filly for $340,000
When prominent trainer Tony McEvoy inspected a filly by Zoustar (Northern Meteor) from the Rosemont Stud draft at the sale, he immediately saw a replica of his Magic Millions 2YO Classic (RL, 1200m) winner Sunlight (Zoustar).
Early yesterday, McEvoy backed his judgment and went to $340,000 for the filly after outlasting underbidder Gai Waterhouse to add the filly to his growing stable.
Catalogued as Lot 130, the filly is the second foal out of winning General Nediym (Nediym) mare Special Favour, who won over 2200 metres in Perth.

Monday 12 February 2018 | 4 |McEvoy purchases Zoustar filly for $340,000
Continued on page 6>>
<< Continued from page 2 The filly's second dam is the three-time Group Two winner and Group One-placed My Tusker (Volksraad), while she is also from the same family as champion mare Horlicks (Three Legs), herself the mother of Melbourne Cup (Gr 1, 3200m) winner Brew (Sir Tristram).
McEvoy bought the Zoustar filly without a client in mind but hopes the deeds of Golden Slipper Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) bound Sunlight will have new owners jumping on board.
“She looked a really intelligent filly with great purpose, balance and a great walk. I tell you, when Rick (Connolly) and I both looked at her, Sunlight jumped out at us and this filly is not dissimilar,” McEvoy told ANZ Bloodstock News.
“She has the same depth of muscle and the same fast twitch about her. She looked the filly of the sale, so we are very pleased to be able to buy her.”
Although McEvoy has made comparisons with his speed filly Sunlight, the yearling’s pedigree gives him confidence she could develop into a three-year-old capable of getting over more distance.
“There is no doubt at all that this filly will get a mile, but if you close your book (and not look at her pedigree), she looks fast and will be here for the $2,000,000 Millenium race next year,” he said.
The dual-state trainer said the traditional Inglis Classic Yearling Sale had changed, with the quality of horses and prices demanded in the ring a marked increase on previous years.
“The Classic Sale has changed and it is not the sale of old and I also had to beat off Gai Waterhouse and that is hard to do,” he said.
“Gai is an amazing judge of young horses to go to the big races in their two-year-old days and she chased me hard, so that confirms to me that my eye is in.”
Rosemont Stud proprietor Anthony Mithen told ANZ Bloodstock News the filly continued a good result for the operation after buying the mare in foal to Shamus Award (Snitzel) for $30,000 at the 2015 Magic Millions Gold Coast National Broodmare Sale.
Purchased in conjunction with Blue Sky Bloodstock from the Widden Stud draft, the Shamus Award colt made $115,000 at the 2017 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale.
“She was a beautiful filly and plenty of good judges were telling me she was one of the fillies of the sale and their eye is a bit better than mine,
so I took that lead and put her on the market as you don’t need to worry about those horses,” Mithen said of the Zoustar filly.
“It was nice to present a quality filly at the right time and timing is everything in this game. Zoustar is doing such a great job now and I think he will go on with it too. I am heavily committed to him and it is nice to have that style of stallion in Victoria even if it is every second year.”
Zoustar, who has sired two individual juvenile winners including Sunlight, stands at Widden Stud in the Hunter Valley and Woodside Park Stud in Victoria on a year-to-year rotating basis.
Mithen, meanwhile, said Special Favour had a quality weanling colt by Rosemont Stud’s resident stallion Nostradamus (Medaglia d’Oro) and is in foal to Tarzino (Tavistock).
“We bought the mare in consultation with Julian Blaxland a few years ago when she was in foal to Shamus Award. She has been a really good result for us actually,” he said.
“If you could buy a (General Nediym) mare at every broodmare sale, you would try. They are like little pockets of gold. They give substance, athleticism and bone to their horses and she has done that a couple of times now, so she is a keeper.”
Zoustar averaged $174,500 from five lots sold at the Inglis Classic Yearling Sale.

Son of Deep Field sells for $300,000McEvoy also bought the second highest-priced colt yesterday after
going to $300,000 for a colt by first crop stallion Deep Field (Northern Meteor), whose popularity in the sales ring this year continued at Riverside Stables yesterday.
Catalogued as Lot 193, the Lucas Bloodstock-consigned colt was a pinhooking success for Northern Hemisphere-based Phoenix Thoroughbreds.
Queensland-based David Lucas paid $180,000 for the colt as a foal at last year’s Inglis The Chairman’s Sale from the draft of Newhaven Park.
He is the first living foal for winning Exceed And Excel (Danehill) mare Uncommon, who is a sister to Group Three winner Exceedingly Good and a half-sister to Listed winner Common Interest (More Than Ready).
“That was pretty close to what we were expecting for the horse, he’s a very nice horse and is probably one of the better walking horses we have here. Everyone seemed to like him, we had a lot of hits on the x-rays and we were hoping to get around that figure for him,” Lucas told ANZ Bloodstock News.
“Newgate is doing the right thing supporting the stallion and their $100,000 bonus is not doing any harm. He seems to sell well in the ring and they all seem to like him.”
McEvoy bought the colt in partnership with Blue Sky Bloodstock and believes the horse had the physique and pedigree to be up and running as an early two-year-old.
“I like the Deep Fields for a start and the colt is a very bright horse with great quality and a tremendous eye,” McEvoy said.
“He has got all the things that I like, really, and he is a horse that will be up and running and will be a chance to get to the $2,000,000 race.”
The trainer said the colt’s pedigree personified what Australian racing is all about: speed on speed.
“Australian racing is speed racing. You see a lot of people putting speed over stout, but why would you do it? Why dull speed?” he said.
“I thought this colt would be popular and Julian Blaxland from Blue Sky liked him as well, so we have gone in 50:50.”
After two sessions, McEvoy Mitchell Racing has purchased seven lots for $1,060,000 at an average of $151,420 to be the leading buyer at the sale.
The leading buyer by yearlings bought is Darby Racing and De Burgh Equine, with ten horses purchased for $997,000 at an average of $99,700.
Perry strikes for familiar Deep Field coltSoon after McEvoy’s Zoustar yearling purchase, agent Bruce Perry
bought a colt by Newgate Farm-based first crop stallion Deep Field (Northern Meteor) for $220,000.
Catalogued as Lot 157, the Milburn Creek-consigned colt is the fifth foal out of city winner Tahnee Topaz (Lonhro), whose two foals to race are both winners.
Tahnee Topaz is a half-sister to the stakes-placed Tahnee Tango (Grand Lodge), who is the dam of Group Three winner Worthy Cause (Choisir) and the stakes-placed Octane Flyer (Statue Of Liberty).
Perry said the Deep Field colt was from a family he was familiar with, having paid $280,000 for his now two-year-old half-sister by I Am Invincible (Invincible Spirit) at last year’s Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale.

Monday 12 February 2018 | 8 |Perry strikes for familiar Deep Field colt
Continued on page 10>>
<< Continued from page 6 “We bought a half-sister to him last year by I Am Invincible, so we know the family well and she goes well,” Perry told ANZ Bloodstock News,
“I have also been really impressed with the Deep Fields right across the board. I bought a lovely filly at Karaka by him and I also bought a half-sister to Deep Field at Easter last year.
“This horse. who is very smart, is not too heavy and has a lot of presence.”
Perry said the first two sessions of the Inglis Classic Yearling Sale had been strong, forcing buyers to up their budgets to secure the horses they want.
“All the good colts are making that and more and he was the pick of the colts that I wanted,” he said.
“The overall market is amazingly strong and it is brilliant for the industry.”
The New Zealand-based agent bought the colt for clients, with the horse expected to be trained in Australia.
Milburn Creek owner John Muir said the $220,000 colt had been impressing many potential buyers both in pre-sale inspections and once he arrived at Riverside Stables.
“He is a magnificently conformed colt, really racy. He was bought by Bruce Perry for some New Zealand investors, who are really good judges. I think he was well bought and a very nice type,” Muir said.
“Deep Field has been very popular in the sales ring and very well accepted by the buyers. He was very popular during the inspections.
“Before coming to the sale we thought he could sell in that vicinity, but after the inspections and the vet checks, it didn’t surprise that he made that sort of money.”
Deep Field has had 20 yearlings sell for $2,485,500 at an average of $124,275 to be the leading first season stallion at the sale by aggregate.
Brazen Beau is the leading first crop sire by average, with three yearlings selling for an aggregate of $710,000 at an average of $236,667.
Newgate Farm general manager Bruce Slade said Deep Field had been accepted at the time he went to stud when covering 247 mares in 2015 and he had again been supported in the sales ring this year.
“Deep Field was a brilliant sprinter himself and his yearlings look precocious and ideal for the Australian market and the lucrative juvenile races such as the Inglis Millenium,” Slade said.
“We are delighted with the way the market has taken to Deep Field’s yearlings with a number of good judges buying them.”

Monday 12 February 2018 | 10 |Strong day two at Classic
Strong day two at ClassicInglis national bloodstock director Jonathan D’Arcy says the quality of
horses offered by vendors combined with the depth of the buying bench that has been boosted by a larger international presence has led to new records being set at the Inglis Classic Yearling Sale.
After two days of selling at the Inglis Classic Yearling Sale, 296 yearlings have sold for an average of $102,674, up on the 2017 average of $71,342, at a clearance rate of 90 per cent.
The 2018 aggregate sits at $30,391,500 with a median price of $80,000, up on the $55,000 achieved at last year’s sale, continuing this year’s Australasian yearling sales’ upward trend.
“One of the strengths of Classic is that for quite a few buyers it is the only sale that they come to,” D’Arcy said.
“For many provincial and country trainers in New South Wales they don’t travel interstate, they feel this is their sale, and that is always the backbone of the sale but now we are seeing a lot more internationals coming to sale.
“We have a very strong buying bench from New Zealand for their ready to race market and added to that quite a few trainers from around Australia have recognised that some of the best horses racing today are being sold out of the Classic sale.”
The third day of book one at the Inglis Classic Yearling Sale starts at 11am today. Book two, which is being held for the first time, will be conducted tomorrow.

Pretty Punk scores in Hobart CupThe Leon Macdonald and Andrew Gluyas-trained Pretty Punk (4 m Rebel Raider - Reliability by Kurofune) took out the $250,000 Hobart Cup (Gr 3, 2400m) at Hobart yesterday. The four-year-old mare has been a model of consistency this season, winning at Morphettville and Flemington, and she was always well positioned in behind the leaders by apprentice Ben Allen. She was ridden into the lead at the 150 metres and held on well in the last strides to fend off Andrea Mantegna (Giant’s Causeway) by a head, with Fastnet Dragon (Fastnet Rock) a further length and a quarter behind in third place.
62 for Hard SpunLightly raced Darren Weir-trained filly Pleasuring (3 f ex Sleeplessinseattle by End Sweep) yesterday won the Strutt Stakes (Listed, 2100m) at Hobart, giving her sire, the former Darley shuttler Hard Spun (Danzig), his 62nd stakes winner. The David Moodie-bred and owned three-year-old, who won her maiden at Ballarat on 14 January, has now won twice from eight starts and defeated Casa De Lago (Delago Deluxe) by a length, with Maheera (Artie Schiller) a further half a length behind in third place. Hard Spun’s progeny include nine individual Group / Grade One winners. Two for Needs FurtherThe Adam Trinder-trained Mystic Journey (2 f ex White Gold by Colombia) retained her unbeaten record when she won the Elwick Stakes (Listed, 1100m) at Hobart yesterday and in the process provided Needs Further (Encosta De Lago) with his second stakes winner. The two-year-old, who came into the race having won her two previous starts and she stayed on strongly to defeat Gee Gee Secondover (Wordsmith)
by three quarters of a length with a further length and a three quarters back to Call Me Royal (Sebring) in third. Needs Further stands at Armidale Stud, where his fee for 2017 was $5,500 (inc GST).
Thomas Lyons Stakes to Hellova Street
The consistent Scott Brunton-trained Hellova Street (Helike) added to his stakes-winning record in the Thomas Lyons Stakes (Listed, 1400m) at Hobart yesterday. The seven-year-old gelding, who won the Chatham Stakes (Gr 3, 1400m) at Flemington last November, defeated his stablemate Lord Da Vinci (Lonhro) by two lengths in the $100,000 race. The Leon, Dean and Trent Wells-trained Gee Gees Top Notch (Wordsmith) was another long head away in third place. Click here to view yesterday’s Hobart replays.
Missrock primed for Flemington missionThe Robbie Laing-trained Missrock (Fastnet Rock) is in peak condition for her tilt in Saturday’s Black Caviar Lightning Stakes (Gr 1, 1000m) at Flemington. The four-year-old mare tuned up for her assault on the Group One by running third in a 800 metre Cranbourne trial last Monday. Missrock has won four of her 21 starts, with all those victories coming first-up from a spell. "She's a big strong girl and everything has gone right this preparation," Laing said. "We were
@anz_news
conscious to hold her together (in the trial) and leave plenty in reserve."
Two runners for Pride in Lightning StakesJoseph Pride will launch a two-pronged attack on the Black Caviar Lightning Stakes at Flemington on Saturday, with Group One winner Terravista (Captain Rio) and stakes winner Ball Of Muscle (Dubawi) set to take their chance in the Group One. Terravista will be resuming having not been seen since his second place finish in the Darley Classic (registered as VRC Sprint) (Gr 1, 1200m) in November, while Ball Of Muscle will also be returning from a break, having not run since his victory in the Century Stakes (Listed, 1000m) in November.
Group One return possible for LimestoneGroup Three winner Limestone (Helmet) could make her return to action in the Black Caviar Lightning Stakes at Flemington on Saturday, although a start in the race is not assured. The Darren Weir-trained three-year-old won the Blue Diamond Preview (F) (Gr 3, 1000m) as a two-year-old and has not been seen on a racetrack since finishing fourth behind Merchant Navy (Fastnet Rock) in the Coolmore Stud Stakes (registered as Ascot Vale Stakes) (Gr 1, 1200m) at Flemington in November.
Mertens on SupidoMichael Kent has said Beau Mertens will take the ride on Group Three winner Supido (Sebring) in Saturday’s Black Caviar Lightning Stakes at Flemington. Kent says he wants to give Mertens experience on the six-year-old before he partners him in the Newmarket Handicap (Gr 1, 1200m) at Flemington 10 March. Supido will be resuming in the Group One having not been since he finishing fifth in the Ian McEwen Stakes (Gr 2, 1000m) at Moonee Valley, having won the Sir John Monash Stakes (Gr 3, 1100m) on his previous start.

Merovee to run in CS HayesGroup Three-placed Merovee (Frankel) will resume in the C S Hayes Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m) at Flemington on Saturday as he seeks to land his first stakes race. The Chris Waller-trained colt, who is out of the Group Two-winning More Than Ready (Southern Halo) mare More Strawberries, finished fifth first up in the Chris Toogood Farewell Handicap (1300m) on 27 January and will be ridden by Kerrin McEvoy on Saturday.
Vinland in peak conditionTony McEvoy is pleased with the condition of Vinland (Sebring) ahead of the colt’s tilt at the C S Hayes Stakes. The three-year-old had a jump-out at Flemington on 2 February and is being prepared for a start in the Australian Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) second up. "I've given him some solid work since his jump-out the other day," McEvoy said. "He needs to be pretty forward for Saturday if he's going to run in the Guineas second-up. If I was going to give him two runs before the Guineas I might have been a bit kinder but I'm happy with where he's at."
Foxplay to run in Apollo StakesAlthough Winx (Street Cry) is not running in the Apollo Stakes (Gr 2, 1400m) at Randwick on Saturday, trainer Chris Waller will not be without a runner in the race with Group One winner Foxplay (Foxwedge) set to take her chance. Foxwedge will be making her return to action having not run since her fifth place finish in the Myer Classic (registered as Empire Rose Stakes) (Gr 1, 1600m) in November. Winx caught Foxplay in the final 50 metres of the Warwick Stakes (Gr 2, 1400m) in the spring. "I wasn't going to run Foxplay in the Apollo but now that Winx isn't there she will run," Waller said. "She thought she had won the Warwick Stakes - until she got home."
Golden Slipper still the aim for Royal Witness John Sargent still intends to aim Royal Witness (Star Witness) at the Golden Slipper Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) despite the colt’s underwhelming debut at Randwick on Wednesday. The colt finished fifth in a maiden over 1000 metres,
having looked well placed on the run home but lost impetus over the closing stages to finish two and a quarter lengths behind the winner Zousain (Zoustar). "You could see he was never on the bit travelling. He had his chance but he did have a big blow,” said Sargent. "He'll back-up in a couple of weeks. We've still got a chance if he's good enough to see where we go. He'll keep and I'll go to a 1200 in a couple of weeks.”
Blinkers an option for LevendiAfter Levendi (Pierro) finished fifth in the Autumn Stakes (Gr 2, 1400m) at Caulfield on Saturday, Manny Gelagotis, racing manager for trainer and brother Peter, said the colt could have blinkers applied when he runs in the Australian Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) at Flemington on 3 March. "It was a bit puzzling and we were a bit disappointed," Gelagotis told Racing.com. "We might have to have a gear change with him and put the blinkers on. From a staying perspective, it was a pass mark. He's had a bit of trouble at Caulfield, it might be a bit of a bogey track for him. Sometimes with those colts, you can't be sure they're concentrating."
Mannerism Stakes next for Silent SeditionTrainer Andrew Noblet feels that Silent Sedition (War Chant) still has more to offer after her fifth place finish in the Bellmaine Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m) on Saturday. The mare could race in new headgear at her next start, which is likely to be the Mannerism Stakes (Gr 3, 1400m) next up at Caulfield on 24 February. "Looking at her this morning, I don't think she left it all out there - she was very well in herself this morning coming back from the pool, cleaned up her feed. We'll have a look at her, and maybe make a gear change or something like that,” Noblet told Racing.com. "She'll keep going the way she's going (Mannerism-Coolmore Classic), but she might not have left it all out there yesterday."
Group One aim for OutrageousThe Team Hawkes-trained Outrageous (All Too Hard) will likely be set for a ATC Sires’ Produce Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) campaign after breaking his maiden at Newcastle yesterday. The two-year-old colt held off the late charge of the
Godolphin-raced Tin Hat (Helmet) to win by a head over 1300 metres under Dwayne Dunn. "A few people, like myself, probably had their heart in their mouth for a stride or two," Dunn said. "The horse of Arrowfield's (Panzerfaust) babysat me all through the run, and I just had to hold my spot one-off, just let him get through his rhythm. He sprinted nice when he came off behind them."
Krogh moves to BrisbaneBrisbane's apprentice ranks have received a further boost with leading central Queensland rider Quayde Krogh moving to Brisbane. Krogh has linked with former champion jockey Chris Munce and rode First Crush for the trainer at Doomben on Saturday. Originally apprenticed on the Gold Coast, Krogh has been riding out of Rockhampton for the past two years and has had considerable success on the provincial circuit. He has ridden 161 winners but can still claim three kilograms in the metropolitan area.
Charges dropped against Brad SmithA Queensland Racing Integrity Commission spokesman has said criminal charges against former Deagon trainer Brad Smith have been dropped. Smith faced three charges involving an alleged fraud in a horse sale. "The Racing Crime Squad has confirmed the charges have all been discontinued," the spokesman said. "However, at this stage Smith still faces a hearing about some alleged racing industry offences." Smith was suspended from training but is currently on a stay from the appeal body at the Queensland Civil and Administrative Tribunal. His case is expected to be heard soon.

Oaks aim for Pinup Coup Co-trainer Matthew Pitman has confirmed that Pinup Coup (Pins) will be aimed at the New Zealand Oaks (Gr 1, 2400m) at her next start following her gutsy victory over 1600 metres at Riccarton on Saturday. “She just didn’t have any luck at Trentham and probably should have finished a lot closer in the Desert Gold,” said Pitman. “The trip away didn’t do her any harm though and has toughened her up a bit. We’ve always thought she would be an Oaks filly as she wants to stay so that is where we have been heading with her.”
Easy victory for Don CarloThe promising Don Carlo (Per Incanto) returned from a break to win impressively at Riccarton on Saturday. The Michael Daly-trained four-year-old had been off the track since running eighth in the Stewards Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m) in November, and his trainer believes he has a bright future. “We put him aside for a break after he finished down the track at Riccarton in the Stewards,” Daly said. “He still has plenty of maturing to do but when you can go 56.34 for the 1000 metres fresh up after a three month break I think he stood up and made a statement on Saturday.”
Brookbars lives up to expectationsJockey Jordan Nason was impressed with Brookbars (Bullbars) at Te Rapa on Saturday, with the four-year-old mare capping a consistent run of form with a decisive victory on a Slow 9 track over 1600 metres. “She always gets back but she has been in great form in rating 85 races on decent tracks lately,” said Nason. “She was back down in grade today and the rains came for her as she acts so much better on a wet track. She won quite well in the end.”

Analysis: South Australian-trained mare Pretty Punk is now the winner of three of her last four starts and she put up a good staying effort in scoring here. She went forward and after being outside the leader, she remained close to the pace after some mid-race moves at 800m and then improved (wide) nearing the home turn. She went deeper on straightening (looking for better going) hit the front at the 100m and then went on to win well. The Darren Weir-trained Andrea Mantegna was handily placed in third spot, was shuffled deeper from the 800m, challenged (wide) at the home turn and kept battling on solidly to take second. Fastnet Dragon was near the rear, improved (wide with cover) from the 800m and then kept running on solidly, closest to the outside rail, to take third.

Analysis: In a race dominated by Victorian-based trainers, the consistent Darren Weir-trained filly Pleasuring had her first stakes success and took her record to two wins and five placings from eight starts in winning here. She was fifth early before settling in eighth place, one off the rails behind a good tempo. She commenced a wide move from the 600m and then ran on strongly, nearer to the outside rail in the straight, and finished far too well to score quite impressively. The Patrick Payne-trained Casa De Lago raced in fourth spot, set out after the leader (Maheera) nearing the home turn, challenged at the 100m and then battled on nicely for second. The winner’s stablemate Maheera soon went to the front. She moved clear, setting up a clear advantage on passing the 700m and then battled on quite well in the straight to take third after running a bold race.
