Frequently Asked Questions

Why do we have to do this? The project can be enjoyable and can keep your brain active over the summer months. You’ll gain knowledge and make connections that will help you in your classes next semester. You will also have a chance to start of next semester with a good grade in each of your classes.

What kinds of stuff should I read? Each reading should be related to one of your classes, one for each. For science, it could be a magazine

article about a new discovery. For social studies, it could be a newspaper article on politics or a biography of a president. For English, it can be any book you want: fiction, non-fiction, horror, mystery, anything. You choose what you read. You choose what interests you.

How long do the books or article have to be? Long enough to interest and challenge you. You know what you’re capable of reading. Keep in mind this will be your new teachers’ first impression of you. You are expected to provide a copy of your article for your teacher’s reference. Throughout the year, your articles may be used by your teachers to enhance lessons. If you find an interesting article, you may be able to benefit later. Books should be 100 pages or more. Articles should be one full page or more.

What do I do if I run out of journal forms? You were not given enough forms for every class, therefore you are expected to use notebook paper or type the Journal using the same format. Additional copies are available on the school website (www.arundelhigh.org) under the Summer Reading Link.

What if my schedule changes? If your schedule changes, you will be responsible to make sure your new teacher receives the assignment. In other words, if you have handed it in to another teacher but then your schedule changes, you need to go to the former teacher to get your paper and then hand it into the new teacher. This is your responsibility.

Where can I get my readings? Log onto www.arundelhigh.org. Click on the “media center” tab. At the media center’s home page, click on third button on the left, Online Databases. To locate appropriate articles use the following databases: EBSCO (username: aacps; password: proflib), NewsBank (username: ra-aacps3; password: ra-high),

or SIRS ((username: aacps; password: aacps). Or go to the public library, or from the newspaper, or magazines…almost anywhere. Just don’t go to the encyclopedia or Internet encyclopedias, like Wikipedia. These are not appropriate for this assignment. For help with book and article choices, see the list of websites and topics on the school website. Each list has been created by the subject area teachers to help you do well on this assignment AND choose something interesting to you.

How will this be graded? Each of your teachers will collect the journal(s) for his or her class. That teacher will grade on quality and effort. This will be your first grade in every class. A rubric is provided on page 5. Use this to guide your writing and make sure you start the year with the best possible grade.

What if I lose my packet? More folders and copies of the assignment will be available at school in the Main Office. We will also post all the paperwork on the school’s website:

www.arundelhigh.org

What if I have questions or need help? Call the school at 410 674 6500 and ask for Ms. McGhee ([email protected])

Honors, AP, and Other Special Assignments Your honors summer assignment fulfills the requirement for that course’s reading. For example, if you have an assignment for AP US History, you would complete that assignment, fulfilling the Social Studies requirement. You would still have to complete the assignment for each of your non-honors courses. Check the following list for courses you are taking that may have an alternate assignment. If it is not listed here, there is no special assignment for that course, and you should find an appropriate article. Additional copies of these assignments are on the website and in the office.
