It is Russia’s land of fire and ice, thanks to its proximity to the Arctic and its many volcanoes. It harbors an abundance of wildlife, including brown bears, wolves, reindeer, mountain sheep, whales, sea eagles, and the breeding grounds of the spoon-billed sandpiper. The peninsula was off-limits to outsiders until 1990 due to its strategic importance to Russia’s submarine bases. Papua New Guinea also remains one of the world’s least- explored places. It is so far from light pollution and radio interference that it is one of the best places in the world to spy on the universe, which is why two major observatories have been constructed here. 2019

Humans have settled 77% of Earth’s surface, so what places are left unexplored? This September, Wilderness Month, we take a look at the world’s wildest places.

Antarctica definitely tops the list of one of the wildest and most remote places on Earth, but few want to go there. For those interested in cold and inaccessible places, far from the touch of civilization, there is the Kamchatka Peninsula in Russia’s Far East.

Papua New Guinea also remains one of the world’s least-explored places. Scientists believe that many of the world’s undiscovered plants and animals live deep within the rugged, inaccessible jungles of the country’s interior. Due to a lack of infrastructure, travel to and around Papua New Guinea is extremely limited.

For those looking for an otherworldly experience, there is the barren yet beautiful Atacama Desert of Chile. This high mountain desert gets almost no rainfall. Its 40,000 square miles is covered in salt basins, sand, and lava. In fact, it is so devoid of life that NASA uses it to replicate conditions on Mars. It is so far from light pollution and radio interference that it is one of the best places in the world to spy on the universe, which is why two major observatories have been constructed here.

How much longer will such untouched corners of Earth exist? No one knows. But there is still ample time to visit and protect these pristine natural jewels.

Don Luedtke

On July 8th,1938, Don was born in Racine, Wisconsin to his parents Harold and Margaret Luedtke. He was one of two children along with his sister named Sharon. He remained and was raised in Wisconsin. Some of Don’s favorite memories from childhood included playing softball. Don married his high school sweetheart, Beatrice, or Bea, Naegeli after dating for a few years. They also remained in Wisconsin to raise their 5 children. His children include Don Jr. who lives in South Carolina, Scott, Cheryl, and Todd who are all nearby in NWA, and Laura who remained in Wisconsin. Don and Beatrice enjoyed hunting in their adult years. They hunted deer, rabbit, squirrel, pheasant and a few elk. Hunting helped put food on the table for 5 growing kids and provided lots of adventures. Most of the traveling the Luedtke family did was for hunting. Don joked “who has leftover money for traveling when raising 5 kids?”

One thing that everyone may not know about Don is that he was the president of the Pest Control Association. He worked for many years in pest control. Don also served in the Guard for 3 years and came out of the military as a Sergeant. A piece of advice that Don would give to those around him is, “Show that you care, and mean it.” Don believes that genuine love and concern for those around you is so important. He mentioned how much he has enjoyed his time at the meadows. Everyone has been so friendly and welcoming to him. We have loved having Don join the meadows family. His kind, gentle spirit brings smiles to all around him!!

Fun Facts

1 million Americans are

currently living in senior living communities.

living facilities is 7:1.

“80 is the new 65”. By 2040, the

population of adults 85+ is expected to

triple due to seniors living more active,

healthy lives.

You are the hero of your own tale! Despite facing many challenges, you consistently rise to the occasion. Your deeds do not go unnoticed, but you loathe to toot your own horn. This strong blend of heroism and humility

makes you much admired both at home and at work. People rely on you and their trust is not misplaced.
