One of our gentle Fraternity’s fundamental requirements, youcould argue that it is a Landmark, is the belief in a SupremeBeing.

December sees observances that include:Eid ul-Adha - Islamic Feast of Sacrifice The most important feastof Islam concludes the Hajj and is a three-day festival recallingAbraham's willingness to sacrifice his son in obedience to AllahBodhi Day (Rohatsu) - Buddhist celebration of the time whenPrince Gautama took his place under the Bodhi tree, vowing toremain there until he attained supreme enlightenmentHanukkah - Jewish Festival of Lights It commemorates theMaccabean recapture and rededication of the Jerusalem Temple in165-164 b.c.e. As we approach the season of giving, let our hearts rule our lives for this short period of time.

We are called upon in many ways to show our Charity, first of all to our families by being present, bycelebrating with them the joys of the season, by spending time with our loved ones and our friends both incontemplation and in relaxation from our busy lives. With those in our places of worship, let us be as one, practice tolerance and the ideals on which our fraternity is based.

Let us not forget those less fortunate homeless individuals. Remember the widows of those Masons who havegone before, the many other charities that rely upon our individual support and others who require ourbenevolence of spirit and forgiveness. The great leaders of our faiths are unified in their push for peace andgoodwill amongst mankind.

Brethren, I have talked about Masonry, Making a Difference, in our lives, our homes, our lodges and ourcommunities. This is the time of year that we can really exemplify the true spirit of Masonry in all that we doand show those around us that indeed Masonry lives and thrives on its charitable precepts learned at Initiation.

I am so proud when I learn of the charitable support that is given by the Masons throughout North America. We use the figure of 3 million dollars a day but in fact that is a small number in comparison to the real worththe Masons provide in Charity and goodwill. Each Jurisdiction has its own charities and CharitableFoundations. Some support Masonic Homes for their aged brethren. Districts in each Jurisdiction have theirown Charity. Each Lodge has a charitable and a benevolent arm. Each of the appendant bodies have theirspecial charities such as orthopaedic and burns hospitals, Dyslexic Centres, work with Alzheimer and bursariesfor students.

I could go on. Where does the aid come from? We as Masons are the sole contributors. Even though we practiceCharity all year long let our hearts feel a special tug at this Yuletide season. Through the act of giving we willfeel uplifted in spirit as we ‘exercise that virtue which may justly be denominated the distinguishingcharacteristic of a Mason’s heart’.

As the song says;“Have yourself a Merry Little Christmas, let your heart be light,From now on our troubles will be out of sight…”

On behalf of my wife, Mary, and myself, I offer to you and yours the greetings of the season and wish you allthe best for a happy and prosperous New Year.

The Christmas Season is upon us, and Freemasons along with their families are gathering together for the festivities. While decorations, fine foods and gifts have become an essential part of this holiday season; let us not forget its true significance and how it is so very much apart of our belief in God. Our corner of the world is primarily of Christian descent however, we are a part of a cultural melting pot andreligious tolerance is essential in our society. The belief in a Supreme Being is the cornerstone of Freemasonry and our guide toacceptance of a man’s faith in God.Let us also be mindful of those less fortunate and extend the hand of charity further so everyone may enjoy Christmas with their families.May each of you along with your families have a very Merry Christmas.
