Before Nat King Cole emerged as one of America’s most popular
singers, he was making waves as an influential jazz pianist and expert arranger
in his adopted hometown of Chicago. Marking the 2019 centennial of Cole’s birth,
this unique concert will celebrate his instrumental roots in a program created
specifically for the Symphony Center Presents Jazz series.

The music of South African pianist and
composer Abdullah Ibrahim reflects
the diverse influences of his Cape Town
roots, an amalgam of traditional African
songs, gospel and American jazz. Since
founding South Africa’s first premier
jazz group, the Jazz Epistles, and later
being discovered by Duke Ellington,
Ibrahim has recorded prolifically and
become a leading figure in modern jazz.
Recently awarded the title of NEA Jazz
Master, he makes his Symphony Center
debut with the celebrated septet Ekaya.
