GCSE Subject ResidualsGCSE Subject Residuals
A residual is the difference between a pupil’s result in one subject and the average of all their results
When calculated nationally, a residual highlights the differences in difficulty between subjects
The comparison of residuals for a county or school with the national residuals shows the relative attainment of pupils in different subjects
Variations due to differences in ability are removed, since results are compared with other results of the same pupil
An Example of a ResidualAn Example of a Residual
A* = 8 points, A = 7, B = 6, C = 5, D = 4, etc Attainment in maths = Grade C Attainment in other subjects = A, B, B, D ,E,
C Points score in maths = 5 Points score in other subjects = 31 Average score for subjects other than maths
is 31/6 = 5.17 Performance in maths is almost a fifth of a
grade lower than the average for all other
subjects
