ForewordBaden Powell de Aquino was born on August 6th, 1937 In V a r r e e - S a ia small town situated about 200 milesnortheast of Rio de Janeiro. His father, an amateur gUitarist. named the child after the boy scout pioneer RobertBaden-Powell 1859 - 194 1 . whom he admired , Th ree m onths later. the fami ly moved to the Rio suburb SaoC ristovao, At the age of 8, Baden Powell became a g Uitar pupil of Jaime Florence a. k. a. Meira (1909 - 1982),a highly regarded samba and choro playe r In the following five years, his instrumental technique and repertoireprogressed qUickly.

At the age of 15 , he was already a professional player. accompanying renowned musica popular brasileira

singe rs. Sho rt ly a fter, he was also perfo rm ing as a soloi st and jazz com bo mem ber a t radio s tat ions a nd nightclubs in Rio. In J 959 he recorded his first solo album. His fnend Vinicius de Moraes (1913-1980), the famousBrazilian poet and diplomat. wrote many lyrics to Baden Powell s musIC and enabled him to travel to Paris In1963. There he started an international career, which led him to further European countries, the USA and Japan. He introduced bossa nova in Europe, and his both VirtuOSOand sensitive guitar playing amazed audiences all overthe world. He settled in Paris, move d to Baden-Baden . Ge rmany, in 1983 and returned finally to Brazil in 1987 .to live In ltanhanga, In the countryside west of Rio. In 1995, he was awarded the Shell prize for hisoeuvre: about 250 music titles and over 60 recorded albums. He died on September 26th, 2000 In Rio deJaneiro.

The re is already a qu rte informative book abou t the bright and dark Sdes of Baden Powell s career and privatelife (Dom inique Dre yfus: a Violao Vadio de Baden Powe ll, Rio , 1999). However. we s t ill miss a deeper analys isof his compositions and his guitar playing. It seems clear that his works represent a very successful syntheSIS ofthe best of Brazilian popular music in the 20th century: samba, choro, bossa nova . folklore from Northeast,African musIc from Bahia. toadas and eve n children tunes from different regions. Moreover, he was Influencedby Jazz giants like Les Paul . Thelonious Monk and Jacques Loussier . This synth es is was madepossib le thro ugh an ext raordinary mu sica l talent. apt to absorb a nd immed iate ly elabora te fro m all these sou rces, through a remarkable background of guitar technique - Baden Powell remembered gratefully even in hislast years his teacher Melra - and, last but not least. through an experience achieved during the years of hardworking in the night life of RIO.

His guitar playing style was stro ngly influe nced by his idols: Melra. Dilermando Reis ( 191 6 1977), later alsoAnibal A Sardinha alias Garoto ( 1915 - 1955), and J03 0 Gilberto (born 193 I). the pioneer bossa nova gUitarist. But his instrumental uniqueness de rives from his late r style, in which percussive rhythm pattems of Africanorigin are mixed with jazz, for example in the afro -sambas. HIs best recordings present his utmost legacy:highly Inspired melodic Improvisation skills and astonishing rhythmic vanety, put together in flamboyantspon taneity
