WHY IT MATTERS
A leader is seen and experienced
as such only because he or she has
followers, and followers must be
inspired to follow.
LEADER: A person who has a vision beyond the
status quo, a roadmap on how to get there,
and the tools to incentivize other people to
action towards that vision.
INFLUENCE: The ability to drive people to action
or to shape mindsets and behaviour .
FOLLOWER: A person who supports, admires or
has a strong interest in the actions and/or
thoughts of another person.
THE MOST EFFECTIVE LEADERS KNOW HOW TO
WEAVE TOGETHER NARRATIVES THAT INSPIRE AND
INCENTIVIZE ACTION OR A CHANGE IN BEHAVIOR.
FOLLOWERS NEED :
A vision in which they can believe;
Directions on how they can achieve this
vision with a leader who has a unique value
proposition.
LEADERS MUST:
Be able to communicate why they should
be followed;
Communicate what is special about them
and their value proposition;
Explain what they want their followers to do;
Share what the world will look like once their
vision is fulfilled and why this outcome is
better than the status quo.
STORYTELLING
IS AN ESSENTIAL
LEADERSHIP
TOOL
It is wrongly assumed that leaders are
natural communicators.
Storytelling is an acquired skill. Leaders
would greatly benefit from honing their
storytelling skills in order to inspire decision -
making and action.
This workshop provides leaders with key
tools to become inspiring storytellers who
can seamlessly weave together narratives
that inspire their constituents to action.
WORKSHOP OUTCOMES
THE CONCEPTS EXPLORED IN THIS WORKSHOP WILL ASSIST LEADERS TO
COME UP WITH INSIGHTFUL WAYS TO SPEAK ABOUT > > >
WHO THEY ARE
Who we are is not just about what our
name is or what we do for a living. It is
about “the baggage we bring with us
when we walk into a room”. Where
we’ve been, what we’ve seen, the
people who have shaped us along
the way; all of these things influence
who we are and it is this “who” that
leaders need to be able to articulate
to inspire others.
WHAT THEY DO
As acclaimed author and speaker
Simon Sinek says, most people can
easily and intelligently talk about what
they do. Inspirational leaders can link
what they do to the overall contexts
of the environments in which they
work.
HOW THEY DO IT
Most people confuse what they do
with how they do it. In this workshop,
leaders are challenged to tease out
the difference in their storytelling
efforts.
WHY THEY DO IT
Very few people in the world are doing
something no one else has ever done
before. For leaders, the likelihood that
their what and how are unique is slim.
However, every leader has a special
story that has led them to the point in
their journeys when they are finally
called to lead.
It is often an accumulation of deeply
personal experiences and other
circumstances. Environmental factors
also play a major role in the “why”, such
as the socio - economic, cultural, familial
or even political dynamics that birthed
and shaped the leader.
All of these things culminate in the
material that builds a narrative which
can be bought into.
THEIR CALL TO ACTION
AN OFTEN NEGLECTED PART OF STORYTELLING IS THE CALL TO ACTION; T HE “SO
WHAT?” PART. IT’S GREAT TO BE ABLE TO TELL A STORY WHICH MOTIVAT ES AND
INSPIRES A ROOM.
THE KEY TO AN INSPIRING NARRATIVE IS TO LEAVE THE AUDIENCE WITH A CLEAR “ASK”.
