94% of secondary schools in Southwark are judged good or outstanding by Ofsted. We are working hard to drive standards up so all our pupils attend a school that exceeds London averages at every stage.

You and your child can select up to six schools that you would most like your child to attend.

Here we give you information about what each school can offer your child over the next five years. Someschools specialise in arts, maths, languages, science or digital technology, and so it is important to get a good understanding of what is on offer when making your choices. I encourage you to attend open days and evenings to take a tour of the schools and meet the teachers. Dates for open days and evenings are also included within this brochure.

All applications for secondary school places must be made using our online application atwww.southwark.gov.uk/schooladmissions. What should parents/carers look out for?

n The admissions process starts.

n Contact schools for a copy of their prospectus and details of when you can visit for open days/evenings. We strongly advise families to visit schools before naming them as a preference on the application. Please view pages 7 and 8 for Southwark’s school open day/evening dates.

n Apply for secondary schools by completing an online application at:www.southwark.gov.uk/schooladmissions

n If any of the schools you have listed as one of your preferences requires asupplementary information form (SIF), you must complete and return theSIF directly to the school. You should contact the school to check theirindividual closing date.

n Closing date for submitting online applications.

n You must ensure that we have received your online applicationalongside any additional supporting information by this date. We strongly recommend that you submit your application by Friday 19 October 2018 so that we receive it before the half termholiday and can contact you if necessary.

n Applicants who apply on time will receive their child’s offer of aschool place by email after 5pm. This email will also includeinformation on what to do next.

n No action is required if you are a Southwark resident and want toaccept the school place offered to your child.

Types of Secondary schools in Southwark

APPLICATIONS

There are three types of mainstream secondaryschools in the borough and Southwark Council co-ordinates admission applications on behalf of allthese schools. The schools all follow the nationalcurriculum and are regularly inspected by the Officefor Standards in Education (Ofsted). For childrenstarting school in Southwark there are 20 secondaryschools to choose from.

Voluntary aided schools

There are three voluntary aided secondary schools in Southwark. The school’s governing body isresponsible for their admissions and decides howpupils are admitted.

Academies

There are 14 academies in Southwark. The Academy Trust is responsible for school admissionsand decides how pupils are admitted.

Free school academies

There are three secondary free school academies in Southwark. The school’s governing body isresponsible for school admissions and decides how pupils are admitted.

Types of secondary schools in Southwark

All of Southwark’s secondary schools are their own admissions authority and are responsible for setting their own admission arrangements. Our school admissions team co-ordinates admissionapplications to all schools. In cases where a decision not to offer a place has been made,parents/carers will need to contact each school or academy for further details.

Admission authorities are responsible for ensuring that their arrangements are fair, clear and compliantwith current regulations. If you have a query about a particular arrangement, you must raise it directlywith the relevant admission authority e.g. the school. If your query remains unresolved and it relates to aSouthwark school, please contact our admissions compliance officer by email [email protected]

You may also raise any objections to admission arrangements with the Office of the Schools Adjudicatorby 15 May. Please see page 49 for details on how to contact them.

APPLICATIONS

If your child was born between 1 September2004 and 31 August 2005 and is currently inyear 9, s/he is eligible to apply for a place at aUniversity Technical College (UTC) or a studioschool to start at the beginning of year 10 inSeptember 2019.

UTCs and studio schools admit pupils at thebeginning of year 10 and provide technicallyoriented courses of study or work skill basedlearning for 14 to 19 year olds. Although there arecurrently no UTCs or studio schools in Southwark,you can still apply for a place for your child at a UTCor studio school outside of Southwark. Please visitwww.utcolleges.org for information on UTCs nearto where you live.

If you are a Southwark resident and would like to apply for your child's admission to a UTC orstudio school, you must apply online atwww.southwark.gov.uk/schooladmissions

Please note you must only apply if:

n your child is currently in year 9; and

n you would like your child to transfer from asecondary school to a UTC or studio school tostart at the beginning of year 10 in September 2019

Any schools other than UTCs or studio schools thatare named on the child’s online application will notbe considered.

Information about applying

Before you start applying there are a few things youneed to know.

n If your child was born between 1 September2007 and 31 August 2008, your child is due to start secondary school in September 2019.You must start applying from 1 September 2018and submit your application by 11.59pm on 31 October 2018.

n If you are a Southwark resident you must apply online atwww.southwark.gov.uk/schooladmissions

n If you live in another borough you mustcomplete the admission application for theborough in which you live, even if you would liketo apply for a school in Southwark.

n When applying for a school place you mayexpress a preference for up to six schoolswhether they are in Southwark or in anotherborough.

n If you are going to apply to a school under theirmedical/social criterion it is important that youvisit the school before naming it as a preferenceon your application. This is to ensure that theschool is suitable to meet your child’s needs.

n If you are applying to a secondary school thatuses banding within its criteria, your child will berequired to take a test. Please contact the schoolfor further details.

n Some schools need to collect information that is not included on the admission application.They request this information using asupplementary information form (SIF). The school will use the information you provide bycomparing it against their published admissionscriteria. For example, a faith school will requireevidence of church attendance.

n You must complete a SIF if the school you havelisted as one of your preferences requires this.Please view the individual school’s page withinthis brochure to check if a SIF is required.

n The SIF will be available from the school andmust be completed, signed and returned directlyto the school. Please check the individual deadlinedate for returning the SIF with each school.

n Where a SIF is required alongside an admissionapplication, your application may be invalid oryour chance of a place reduced unless both theforms have been completed and received at thecorrect addresses by the closing dates for each.

n You can start applying online from 1 September 2018 atwww.southwark.gov.uk/schooladmissions

n If you do not have a computer at home or do not have internet access, Southwark Councillibraries and MySouthwark customer servicepoints offer free access to the internet with staffon hand to help. How do I apply online?

Online school admission applications are quick andeasy to do. Follow the steps below and you’reready to start your child’s online application.

Step 1

n To apply online go towww.southwark.gov.uk/schooladmissions

n Click on

n You will be taken to the eAdmissions webpage.

Step 2

What to do if this is the first time you areapplying online using eAdmissions

n If you have previously used the eAdmissionswebsite to apply for a school place for any of yourchildren you do not need to register again. Pleasego to Step 3.

n If this is the first time you are applying for a schoolplace on the eAdmissions website, you mustregister to apply online. It is important that theperson registering has parental responsibility forthe child and that they both live at the sameaddress that has been stated on the onlineapplication.

n You will need an email address to register. Don’tworry if you do not have an email address. Youcan sign up for a free email account by readingour leaflet ‘Registering for an email account’which can be requested from the schooladmissions team by calling 020 7525 5337.

n We recommend that applicants use GoogleMail ifpossible. However, if you already have an emailaddress you should set your spam/junk mail filterto ‘Standard’ so that emails from eAdmissions gostraight to your inbox. You should alsooccasionally check your spam/junk email folder tomake sure that messages from eAdmissions arenot sent there by mistake.

n You can also sign up to get notifications either bytext message or by downloading the‘ParentComms’ mobile app.

n You will need to click on ‘Register to applyonline’. Once you have registered, you will beasked to create your own password.

n You will then be sent an email with your username and instructions which you must follow tovalidate your email address.

n The email will also contain a web link which willtake you to the eAdmissions log in page to startyour application.

Please keep your user name and passwordsafe as you will need these same details to log in to make any future online applicationsand to see the outcome of your application.

Step 3

What to do if you have applied before usingeAdmissions or you have registered and have auser name

n On the home page click on ‘Return to anexisting account’ and enter your user name andpassword.

n If you have forgotten your user name or passwordclick on the ‘Forgotten your user name orpassword?’ link. Both your user name andpassword can be re-sent to the email address youused when you first registered (please check yourspam/junk folder as it may have been sent there).

n Once you log in to your account, your personaldetails will be displayed on the page. You mustcheck if any of your details e.g. your address,email or phone numbers have changed andupdate them. Once any necessary changes havebeen made, you must tick the box to confirm thatyour details are correct.

n You must also read and agree the privacy policy byticking the box and then click on ‘Save andcontinue’ to start the application.

Step 4

Completing the application

n Once you have logged in, you will be directed toyour home page called 'My school admissions’.

n If you can see your child's name on your 'Myschool admissions' page, click on the 'Start newapplication' button below the child's name. Thisbutton will only be available for children whosedate of birth falls within a relevant age range. Youshould check your child’s existing details and click‘Next' to continue.

n If your child’s name is not displayed, click on ‘Starta new application for a child that is not listedbelow'. You will then be directed to the 'Childdetails' page where you must enter the child’sdetails for whom you are making the application.

n You must also select your child’s currentschool/nursery from the drop down list. If yourchild’s school/nursery is not listed on the dropdown list, you must manually type it into the textbox provided.

n Once complete, click on ‘Next’ to continue withthe application.

n Each page on your screen will explain what youneed to do with a ‘Help’ button at the top of thepage which you can click on or guidance notes onthe left to help you.

n You must select the school you want for your firstpreference from the drop down list. You can applyfor up to six schools which you must select and listin the order you prefer them. Please ensure that thecorrect school is selected especially when there areother schools with a similar name in the borough.

n It is your responsibility to check that your online application is fully completed and that all details are entered correctly. Failure to tickcertain boxes, e.g. the sibling box, the lookedafter children box, or the social/medical box, willmean that your application will not be consideredunder these criteria.

n If you are providing additional supportingdocumentation you must upload this as anattachment with your online application orsubmit this by post before 11.59pm on 31 October 2018. Please see the back cover forthe school admissions postal address.

n If you have ticked the ‘social/medical’ box, you must provide additional information tosupport your application such as a recentmedical/social report or letter from a professional.If you have ticked the ‘looked after child’ box youmust provide supporting documents such as acourt order and a letter from your child’s socialworker. The letter must confirm that the child iscurrently looked after or has been previouslylooked after by a local authority but ceased to beso because they were adopted (or became subjectto a child arrangements order, specialguardianship order or residence order).

n You must ensure that you click ‘Next’ each timeyou complete a page of the application or yourinformation will not be saved.

Step 5

When and how do I submit the application?

n When you have completed your application youmust submit it by 11.59pm on 31 October 2018.The online application will not be deemed as ontime if it is received after this time and date.

n Use the ‘Submit Application’ button to submityour application.

n After you have submitted your online applicationyou should receive an email confirming that your application has been submitted successfully.The email will also include a unique applicationreference number similar to this: 210-2019-09-E-123456.

n If you do not receive this email and an applicationreference number it means your application wasnot submitted successfully and you must log inand click on the ‘Submit application’ buttonagain.

Southwark Council cannot acceptresponsibility for applications and supportingdocuments which are not submitted by theclosing date.

Can I change my preferences once I have submitted my application?

n You can make changes to your online applicationup until the closing date.

n If you do go back and make further changes toyour application you must re-submit it by clickingon ‘Submit application’ before the closing date.

n If you have made changes to your details or yourchild’s details you will still have to resubmit theapplication. Check the ‘My school admissions’page and click on ‘Resubmit application’ for yourmost recent changes to be recorded.

n After the closing date Southwark Council’s schooladmissions team will accept the last submittedversion of your application.

What communications will I be sent?

The eAdmissions website will send you variousemails including:

n An email with your user name asking you tovalidate your email address.

n An email with your application referencenumber and the summary of your submittedapplication.

n An email reminder to submit any pendingapplications both one week before and 24 hours before the closing date. If you registerless than 24 hours before the deadline you willnot be sent this email.

n An email with the outcome of your onlineapplication will be sent during the evening of 1 March 2019.

If you have registered your mobile phonenumber to be part of the text messagingservice, eAdmissions will send you various textmessages including:

n A text with your validation code.

n A text confirming your user name.

n A text reminder to submit any pendingapplications about 24 hours before the closingdate. If you register less than 24 hours before thedeadline you will not be sent this text.

n A text with the application reference numberof your submitted application.

n A text to inform you that the outcome of yourapplication is available to view online. You willnot be sent the outcome of your onlineapplication by text message.

If you feel you may need further help and advice incompleting an online application please contactyour child’s current primary school who may beable to support you.

What happens after the closing date?

How the decision to offer a school place is made

n Each of the schools you have named aspreferences on your application will beconsidered individually.

n If you have listed any schools outside ofSouthwark, we will send your preferences tothose boroughs electronically.

n All of Southwark’s secondary schools are noncommunity. Where a school has received moreapplications than there are places available, thegoverning body of each school applies theiroversubscription criteria and decides whichapplicants are to be offered a school place. Toview a summary of each school’s oversubscriptioncriteria please view page 19 onwards.

n Once each school has prioritised applicationsbased on their oversubscription criteria, they willeach provide a ranked list to Southwark Council’sschools admissions team.

n If more than one offer can be made from your list of preferred schools, we will check your application to see which one is rankedhighest and offer you that place. Any schoollisted as a lower preference will be automaticallywithdrawn so that these places can be offered to other applicants.

n Your child will only receive one offer of a school place.

n If your child is a Southwark resident and it is notpossible to offer him/her a school you have listedas a preference, we will offer an alternative place at a school with capacity. This is likely to be the nearest Southwark school to the child’shome which has a vacancy.

Offer of a school place

n You will receive an email after 5pm on 1 March2019 which will provide information on what todo next. You will also be able to view theoutcome of your application on the eAdmissionswebsite during the evening of 1 March 2019.

n Application results will not be provided over the telephone.

n Please note that the offer of a school place isconditional until proof of your address has beenconfirmed by the school.

n Original copies of the following will be required:

– Child benefit documentation, or if you are no longer eligible to receive child benefit, a letter from the HMRC confirming that you were previously in receipt of child benefit

– Council tax bill

– One other proof of address, e.g. TV licence, bank statement, credit/store card statement.

Respond to your offer of a school place

n Your child’s offer will be automatically accepted ifyou are a Southwark resident and his/her detailswill be forwarded to the allocated school after 15 March 2019.

n This offer of a school place will remain availableunless you notify us of any other suitablealternative arrangement for education that hasbeen made for your child. You must notify theschool admissions team by email [email protected] andinclude your unique application reference numberby 15 March 2019 so that another child may beoffered the place.

If you are not offered a school of your preference

Waiting listsn If it has not been possible to offer a place at anySouthwark schools named as a higher preferenceon your application, your child’s name willautomatically be added to their waiting lists.

n You may also ask for your child’s name to beadded to the waiting list of any out of boroughschools listed on your application. Please contactthe local authority the school is located in forfurther information.

n The school admissions code requires admissionauthorities to hold their waiting list strictly in orderof the priorities of their published oversubscriptioncriteria. If your child's name is added to a school'swaiting list, their position may go up or down thelist depending on whether any late applicantshave been added and how the oversubscriptioncriteria applies to these children (i.e. if a lateapplicant meets a higher admissions criterion thanothers already on the list, they will be given ahigher waiting list position). This then ensures thatif a vacancy arises at a school at any time, theadmissions criteria is used to determine whichchild is offered a place from the waiting list.

In order for young people to get the best out oftheir education it is important that they attendschool regularly, they arrive on time, and thatthey get the right support to help them reachtheir potential. The early help localities isavailable throughout Southwark’s schools tosupport you and your child to achieve this.

School attendance

Southwark Council monitors school attendance andexclusions and helps schools and parents meet theirlegal responsibilities. Our officers work closely withschools to improve levels of attendance andbehaviour, and will always try to work in partnershipwith parents to resolve any difficulties.

If your child is too unwell to attend school, youshould contact the school straight away and tell the school when you expect them to return.

The council and government expect that parentswill not disrupt children’s education by taking them out of school during the school term.Headteachers can authorise up to five days absencein extenuating circumstances.

If permission is not granted the school may issue apenalty notice. This is a fine of £60 raising to £120(per parent) if the penalty notice is not paid within21 days. Failure to pay a penalty notice may result ina prosecution.

Child employment

Most children under the age of 16 will require apermit to work. The youngest age a child can workpart-time is 13, except children involved in areas liketelevision, film, theatre, sporting events ormodelling who may need a license if they aremissing school and being paid. If the child is aSouthwark resident, the person in charge ofrunning the event must apply to Southwark Councilfor a child performance license.

If the child will not be with their parent, schoolteacher or home tutor during their employment,they must be supervised by a chaperone who hasbeen approved by the council.

Businesses intending to employ school agedchildren must apply for a child employment permitbefore they can be employed. If a child is workingwithout a child employment permit, there’s a riskthat the employer won’t be insured againstaccidents involving the child.
