Message From the Principal Dear all Last night I was invited to the Year 11 dress rehearsal of ’Bouncers’ and ‘Shakers’. The students are performing the play as part of their GCSE coursework in front of an audience of parents and siblings. The two mini plays were absolutely outstanding and the performances were some of the best I have ever seen, with each student playing multiple parts. What struck me was the sheer amount of lines everyone had to learn and how much team work was involved, not just from the students but also from Ms Chaudhry and Ms Hollis. The whole production really set the standard for the beginning of GCSE examinations this week and I am sure next week the real performance will be awarded the highest grades. It just goes to show what everyone can achieve if they set their minds Children’s Book Week to it. All exams are now getting underway – I would say good luck to everyone, but it isn’t about luck; it is about commitment, determination and preparation. If you approach each subject with this mind-set you will be successful. Have a great weekend, Ms Downey Children’s Book Week 30th June – 4th July 2014 8 WEEKS TO GO! The theme of the week next week is Individuality. The following quotes should, hopefully, inspire you embrace your individuality:

All greatness of character is dependent on individuality. The man who has no other existence than that which he partakes in common with all around him, will never have any other than an existence of mediocrity. James F. Cooper

In a democracy, the well-being, individuality and happiness of every citizen is important for the overall prosperity, peace and happiness of the nation. A. P. J. Abdul Kalam

Message From the Heads of HouseBRUNEL: Mr Glyn

Welcome back to everyone after the May Day Bank Holiday, as we embark upon the most important term of the year. The first day of the month is May Day, it is the time of many old traditions that celebrate the beginning

of summer, such as the May Queen, May Day Garlands and Maypole dancing. It is also known as International Workers Day, or Labour Day, which is a celebration of labourers and the working classes that is promoted by the international labour movement and occurs every year on May 1st.I’ve included the two pictures below which help symbolise what the day stands for, while the poem I think is very relevant, as it really puts into perspective how students need to work for these next few vital weeks, which go such a long way in deciding their life chances and futures.

Can I say a tremendous well done to the following students who are all still on 100% attendance for the

year:

Alex Celecia, Maia Drummond, Moesha Francis, Corey Longuahaye, Caitlyn Longuehaye, and Kieran Strong.

Finally, next half-term as the exams start to end we have the Prom to look forward to and we also hope to be able to enjoy a number of House activities. If anyone has any ideas how we could raise money for our House Charity, Battersea Dogs and Cats Home, please let me, Maia Drummond (House Captain), Moesha Francis (Vice Captain) or your House Council Tutor Rep. know as soon as possible. I would certainly hope to repeat the car wash of last year which was a lot of fun!

DICKENS: Ms Chaudhry I hope that what you take away from my album is not just the music - which I did want to be fun, and I did want it to be about individuality, but please also take away from it that there’s no dream that’s too big. Lady Gaga

The older I get, the more individuality I find in animals and the less I find in humans. Chuck Jones

It is a blessed thing that in every age someone has had the individuality enough and courage enough to stand by his own convictions. Robert Green Ingersoll

Drama News:Congratulations to the following pupils for their spectacular performances of Bouncers and Shakers on Thursday evening:Hayfa Awshan, Bradley Hogan, Elizabeth Turner, Evangeline Bediako, Shay Wotton, Bethany Lennox, Abbie Furlong, Tom Ryan

I am very proud of all of you and I want you to be even better for the exam next week!! Good Luck!

Message From the Heads of HouseTURING: Ms Harvey

Dear Turing House,Congratulations to the following students with 100% attendance so far: Anna-Ruth, Shameille, Joseph, Shakira and Shai. Andrew, we all wish your leg a speedy recovery.

The House Captains will be coming around next week gathering ideas for House events, please let them know of any events you would like to participate in or help run!

Mr Bailey’s tutor group: it is your turn to host the assembly next week and your title is ‘Individuality’. Get your thinking caps on this weekend and be ready to prepare and present on Thursday.

Year 11: You have begun your exams, it is great to see so many of you putting in those extra hours to secure the grades you deserve. Remember to eat breakfast (available at school), drink plenty of water and always carry a spare pen!

Have a great weekend, Ms Harvey

TURNER: Mr Richards

A big thank you and congratulations to the students with 100% attendance still: Francini Nuernberg; Dhruvi Patel; Pradeep Neupane; Lia Lothian; Bradley Bridger. Keep going with this guys! Well done also, to those with 99% still:

Alea Barham; Tyler-Morgan Rogers; Gervaise Wing; Omar Hassouna. These are cracking achievements, as is our current attendance since the beginning of the year, if discounting sixth-form, 95.77% (90.56% with sixth-form). Well done to Mr Solari’s tutor who still reign top with their 96.82% attendance, with NCO and EAD following closely behind with 95.39% and 95.10% respectively. Well done to you all: keep coming in on time, try your hardest to get rest and stay healthy so you do not miss days unnecessarily.

On another note, you have all got to remember the things that will get you into the hour detentions during the week: lateness to school; inappropriate behaviour/parking; failed report; truancy; failure to

hand in your homework. But also, please try your hardest for the next few weeks to get as many achievement points as you can by showing special effort, enthusiasm, independence, teamwork, commitment or community spirit.

Lastly, good luck to all doing their exams in the next few weeks, particularly Year 11, who will be very anxious for the foreseeable future as they have begun their GCSEs this week. To the lower school, please bear in mind that Years 11-13 do have their final exams from now until mid-June and so need a good solid atmosphere to prepare in – one which I know you are all capable of providing. This includes break, lunch and after school where exams may still be running in certain areas. Year 11 – good luck again and I hope you have much to celebrate come August.

Hope you have a lovely weekend.

I really enjoyed Mr Glyn’s assembly on May Day. May Day always reminds me that summer is on its way; the mornings are no longer gloomy, the trees blossom such wonderful colours and everybody seems happier!

When we went to the town hall to sing in front of lots of people including the Mayor. it was a nerve racking experience. I’ve never felt more scared in my life. However, it went really well. We sang ‘Jesu Joy of Man Desires’ and ‘Somewhere Only We Know. The mayor and everybody else loved our singing and gave us £500 towards all the things we want for choir. After we sang, we had some snacks and photographs taken. I even got to sit in the mayor’s chair for debat-ing. I would love to do it again.
