Thanks to Mr Jenkins’ very informative assembly on Friday we all have a very clear understanding of why the holocaust is such a significant event in world history. I hope that this week you have all seen some of the commemorative programmes or internet articles on the subject. As Mr Jenkins said one of the most shocking things about the holocaust is that despite the world being aware of what a human tragedy this was there have been numerous other incidents of genocide since 1945. This is why our community pillar is so important at APA as it demonstrates we can all work together regardless of faith or nationality.

I thought this week we could reflect this thought-provoking poem by Martin Niemoller. Mr Jenkins spoke at whole school

assembly on Monday about the Holocaust and reminded us that Wednesday the 27th of January was Holocaust Memorial Day.

The Holocaust was the state-sanctioned persecution and murder of six million Jews by the Nazi regime and its collaborators. The Nazis came to power in Germany in January 1933. They believed that Germans were “racially superior” and that Jews as well as many other groups were “subhuman” and posed a threat to the German race.

In the early days of their regime, the Nazis established Concentration camps to hold their political opponents. In the following years, before the outbreak of war, they used these camps to incarcerate the victims of their ethnic and racial hatred.

Between 1941 and 1944, Nazi German authorities deported millions of Jews from Germany, it’s occupied territories, and it’s allied countries to ghettos and to extermination camps, where they were murdered in specially developed gas chambers. Although Jewish communities were the primary victims of Nazi racism, other groups such as Roma (Gypsies), Poles, homosexuals and the disabled were also targetted. By 1945, the Nazis and their collaborators had killed nearly two out of every three European Jews.

The crimes committed during the Holocaust devastated most European Jewish communities and eliminated hundreds of Jewish communities in occupied eastern Europe entirely. We commemorate Holocaust Memorial Day because if we don’t remember the past we risk forgetting those who suffered. We must also try to ensure that these incidents are never repeated.

E-safety & Cyber bullyingLots of parents are worried about how and when to introduce their child safely to smartphones and tablets. Social networking and the internet, play a big part inchildren falling victim to cyber bullying, scams and harassment from others. With children as young as 8 regularly being given expensive devices as afashion accessory, surely there should be something in place to protect and educate them in the dangers of the internet. Ark Putney Academy and the PTA are working closely to introduce new technology that will protect and give peace of mind to those that need it. By installing a simple free app onto the device and creating an online account, you will have instant peace of mind that your childcan use their phone the way that it is intended - safely !Get in touch with us or go to www.mobileguardian.com for details. The service is exclusively free for APA with the voucher code ARK30250
