“Targets are very challenging, but the swift rate of progress over the past two years and the strong self-belief that pervades the academy mean that they are achievable. The capacity for further improvement is excellent.” Ofsted, March 2011

Welcome to Globe Academy - our mission is to prepare our students for university and to be leaders in their community. Our aim is for Globe Academy to become a beacon of excellence in education. To help us achieve our aim we work closely with our families to ensure that all our students are committed to learning and develop the character necessary to take advantage of the opportunities provided.

We are an all through school. Children joining us at four or five can spend their whole school career with us developing relationships and links that will stay with them beyond their time at Globe Academy. We offer our students a first class education, based on high quality teaching and the principle that no child will be left behind. We pursue the highest standards in every aspect of the education we provide. We are driven by our desire to meet the needs of every student. To that end, we run the academy as a series of small schools; Tronador for primary students, Elbrus and McKinley for ages 11 – 14, Kilimanjaro for ages 14 – 16 and our Sixth Form will open in September 2014. Smaller schools ensure that we know every student, that they each know their teachers and learning leaders well and that their needs are fully supported.

Globe Academy specialises in mathematics and the performing arts and we intend to make both subjects areas of expertise. Both subjects offer enormous opportunities. ARK Schools’ innovative Maths Mastery programme helps ensure that our students gain a firm understanding of mathematical concepts as early as possible. Our students enjoy the academic and practical aspects of the performing arts, with all ages taking part in spectacular drama, dance and music productions.

As part of the ARK Schools network, we have access to outstanding educational resources and expertise to help provide exceptional opportunities for our students. In September 2010 we moved into our stunning new school. Our historic, 1960s, Pentagon has been transformed into a modern performing arts space and the academy now enjoys excellent modern classrooms, laboratories, workshops and studios and a full sized sports hall.

Globe Academy is a happy school. We maintain high standards of courtesy, respect and discipline and our students wear their academy uniform with pride.

I look forward to meeting you and sharing in the future success of your child at ARK Globe Academy

“Students are rightly proud of what they have achieved. From the youngest children in the Nursery through to the oldest in year 11, students have confidence in their abilities and enjoy school a good deal.”

Ofsted, March 2011

With the right teaching and support every child can realise their potential. We do everything possible to ensure that every child achieves expectations for their age, every year.

l  Extra time Students have 30 hours of formal lessons each week, five more than is typical. This helps them progress rapidly and gives teachers more time to understand students’ needs. Extending our school day, providing residential learning opportunities and taking homework seriously provides more time for learning.

l  Extra special teachers We are staffed to keep class sizes small. We have well qualified, specialist teachers in all subject areas, backed by very able support staff so that all students are challenged to do well and feel safe and supported.

EthosHigh expectations, no excuses, achievement for allOur culture of high expectation and achievement requires hard work and self-discipline. Globe is calm and orderly and our school community is well mannered and respectful to one another. Our behaviour code reinforces responsibility for one’s actions we are quick to praise and reward and equally swift to tackle misbehaviour.

Commitment Students, parents and teachers each sign our home-school agreement, demonstrating our shared commitment to ensuring that each child succeeds.

Focusing on achievement

“ Globe Academy has an exciting and challenging curriculum designed to ensure that we fully develop the talents of every student. ”

Depth before breadth We commit extra time to English and mathematics in every age group to ensure that students quickly acquire the fluency to tackle the full curriculum with confidence. We also emphasise the wider skills of citizenship and personal, social and health education along with the main national curriculum areas.

We offer a wide choice of academic and vocational programmes at GCSE and BTEC, with particular emphasis on students attaining the English Baccalaureate* and achieving good grades across all their subjects. Extra courses, after school and on Saturdays, help boost attainment in every subject. We continue to support numeracy and literacy where needed, right through key stage 3 (ages 11 - 14 Years).

We strive to develop learning power B.R.I.C.K by brick.

‘B.R.I.C.K helps our young people to understand what it means to be a great learner.’

Basics are mastered (literacy and numeracy)Reflective and resilient studentsIndependent learnersCurious and eager to learnKnowledgeable in a broad range of subjects

At ARK Globe Academyl  We support our students in mastering the basics (literacy and numeracy) by making sure that these are taught in every lesson and, where necessary, in small groups l  We work with our students to develop their resilience and to be reflective; helping them to be great learners by

knowing where they are in their learning, how to improve and keep going when it gets tough  l  We recognise that our students need to be able to learn independently so that they can solve problems for themselvesl  We ensure that every lesson develops curiosity so that our students are motivated and eager to learn morel   We seek to equip our students with broad and deep knowledge, while recognising that knowledge is ever changing

and they need the skills to respond to this

* The English Baccalaureate requires students to achieve A*–C grades in English, maths, two science subjects, history or geography and a modern foreign language.

iLearn The iLearn programme has been developed to ensure a smooth transition from primary to secondary school. This is achieved by developing a strong relationship between teachers and their students, based on high expectations of progress and conduct. iLearn is a cross-curricular programme in which iGlobal combines the Humanities with PSHE (Personal, Social, Health, Emotional) and iCreate brings together the creative subjects (Art, Drama and Design Technology). In year 7 more time is provided to enable the teacher/student relationship to develop (six hours per week for iGlobal and five hours per week for iCreate). Throughout the curriculum there is a focus on students becoming independent learners as well as an emphasis on developing resilience and strong collaborative working skills.

Globe Academy aims to achieve excellence in its specialist subjects, mathematics and the performing arts.

Globe Academy mathematics department adopts a “Mathematics Mastery” approach to teaching and learning. This is an innovative mathematics programme based on international best practice and gives students opportunities to gain a deeper understanding of fewer topics. We assess progress regularly and aim to ensure that all students fully exploit their maximum potential. Those who are able to will sit their GCSEs early so that they can take iGCSE in further mathematics by the end of year 11. Our students participate in extra-curricular mathematics every year with the ARK Schools and UK Mathematics Trust individual and team maths challenges.

Every student gets involved in our music and arts programmes and many take part in our school shows, in the ARK Schools Shakespeare Schools Festival and the ARK music gala. Students also take part in residential dance, choir and orchestra weekends. We exploit links with external performing arts partners and hold the Arts Council ARTSMARK Gold award for excellence in arts education.

Enrichment Our extensive extended school programme includes extra-curricular classes, trips and visits and special events. Students meet inspiring speakers from the worlds of business, sports, arts and politics – including the Prime Minister and President Barack Obama. You can see reports of our frequent events in the Globe newsletter at www. globeacademy.org/newsletters.

We have a very wide range of after school sports and performing arts activities. We provide residential and personal development experiences and opportunities for students to take part in schemes such as the Duke of Edinburgh Award and to participate in their local community. The Academy Council runs a hugely successful international event that reflects the school’s diversity.

We offer homework clubs, catch up classes, Saturday and Easter GCSE booster classes and Year 11 students attend maths and English revision weekends before their GCSEs. After school clubs include manga club, science club, girls’ book club, boys’ book club, debating and many more. Students compete in the ARK Schools and Jack Petchey debating competitions, the ARK Schools Sports Day, the ARK Schools Spelling Bee and many Southwark schools events.

Assessment“Across the academy attainment has risen....because all groups of students are making good and sometimes exceptional progress in their learning.”

“Expectations of students’ behaviour and attitudes are high...their behaviour is excellent and they work hard.” Ofsted, March 2011

We assess students’ academic progress regularly and frequently. Accurate and thorough assessment is essential to ensure that students are placed in relevant groups with appropriate challenge and support.

Formal assessments take place each half term and parents are informed of their child’s progress. Students, teachers and parents all know exactly what steps are needed to move each child to the next level of success.

Each term parents/carers and students are invited to Globe Academy’s ‘Academic Review Day’. These days inform parents about their child’s academic progress and establish targets for future learning and enable us to celebrate student achievement.

“Globe Academy is one of the best schools in the country at outperforming expectations for their students and improving their future prospects. There is plenty that other schools could learn from Globe Academy’s success”. Specialist Schools & Academies Trust, June 2012

An all-through educationWith classes from nursery to Sixth Form, Globe students can stay in the academy throughout their school career, building strong friendships and easing the sometimes difficult transition to secondary school.

As an “all-through” academy, Globe provides continuity as children move from the intimacy of primary school into a small (key stage 3) 11-14 years school. Staff know all their students well so no child can go unnoticed academically or in their pastoral needs.

Smaller schoolsGlobe Academy operates as four small schools:

l  a nursery and primary section (Tronador), l  two separate small schools for students of 11-14 years old (Elbrus and McKinley) and l  a school for 14-16 year olds (Kilimanjaro).l  Our Sixth Form will open in September 2014

Led by the academy principal, each school has its own head teacher and timetable. This enables staff and students to develop strong relationships that help to maintain a culture of excellent behaviour and develop a strong sense of community.

ValuesEach small school is committed to teaching the academy’s core values. These are known as R.A.I.S.E.D.

Climbing the mountain to success

“There is a whole-hearted commitment from leaders, teachers and support staff ” Ofsted

l  Relationships are formed and based on trust and mutual respect l  Aspiration for both students and staff l  Integrity – we are true to our values

l  Social justice – opportunities for alll  Empowerment – taking responsibility for ourselves and othersl  Developing self, others and teams

“The approach to meeting individual learning needs and to supporting students...is exemplary, and has a powerful impact on academic progress and well-being.”

“Students are known as individuals and their needs are paramount.”Ofsted March 2011

Special Educational Needs (SEN) Globe Academy recognises the individual needs of every child to ensure that each student can achieve their potential. We place great importance on ensuring that students with special educational needs are identified, properly assessed and well supported, following best practice.

SEN provision mapping provides tailored support for each student. Support may be given in class, in a small group or through withdrawal classes.

Each small school has dedicated learning advisers who work with the special educational needs coordinator and senior learning adviser to ensure excellent provision for children with SEN, EAL or are gifted or talented.

English as an Additional Language Students for whom English is an additional language benefit from our emphasis on depth before breadth in the core curriculum, getting extra support until they reach expected standards in English. Careful assessment and a combination of small induction classes and one-to-one teaching ensure that all students have full access to the academy’s learning opportunities.

l   children who are in public care;  l   children of a staff member who fills a post for which there is a demonstrable skill shortage as approved by ARK Schools. (This priority is limited to no more than one place in each form of entry in any year.);   l   children who have a sibling who already attends the school and who will continue to do so on the date of admission. (For this purpose “sibling” is a whole, half or step-brother or step-sister or an adopted child resident at the same address.);  l   children of staff in the school may also receive priority where the parent has been employed in the academy for two or more years at the time of the application for admission (that is the year before admission). Priority is limited to no more than one place for each form of entry in any year.   l   children who live closest to the school using a straight line distance from the main entrance of the academy to the main entrance to the child’s home.

The school keeps a waiting list to fill any casual vacancies occurring if students leave during the academic year or withdraw from a

place that has been offered.

AppealsParents/Carers/Legal Guardians who are not offered a place for their child are entitled to appeal to an independent committee under the provisions of the School Standards and Framework Act, 1998.
