St Mary’s, Isleworth Newsletter for The Nativity of the B.V.M. 2017 Welcome Back! We are all so impressed with the enthusiasm that’s been shown by all of the children at the start of the new school year. At assembly on Tuesday their behaviour was exemplary. It’s hard to believe that we’ve just come back from a 6 week break. The school site and buildings are looking at their very best and we (and the children) are so happy to see the grass area. It’s a much bigger space than we all remember! Over the next few weeks our Y6 children will begin to run activities 3 times a week for the other children and we will distribute playground games and resources to help keep the children occupied at lunch and playtimes. I look forward to seeing as many of you as possible at this half term’s curriculum mornings. Check out the school calendar for the dates of these. www.smi.hounslow.sch.uk/calendar.html They’ll start in the small hall at 9am. Roof Update All being well, work on the new roof for the main school building will start during half term. This work is budgeted to cost c£230,000 and 90% of the cost is covered by a grant from the Diocese. The remaining 10% will come from your monthly contributions. The work is expected to last for half a term with completion before we break up for the Christmas holiday. Thank you to all those of you who contribute a monthly (or yearly) amount to this Maintenance fund. From this September the monthly contribution is rising to £8.50 a month or £102 a year. This increase starts with our new parents. This is the first increase in 7 years.

And now a couple of reminders! Please don’t let your child scoot or ride their bikes once inside the school grounds as doing

so could put other children and adults at risk of injury. Once inside the school

gates please make your child dismount and store their chariots in the bike shelters or at

the scooter stands. Keep your child with you - please remember that the front area of

the school site is a car park and not a playground. Just as you wouldn’t tell your child play

in the supermarket car park please don’t let them play in the school carpark. If you

arrive after 8:55am your child must log in at the office.

The new climbing equipment is proving very popular even thought it’s not yet completed.

Please don’t let children use the climbing frame after school. Our playground is used

by Sunnysmiles and other clubs which start as soon as the school day

finishes. At the end of the day please head straight home as we need the site to be secure

for these other clubs.

You’ll find a copy of our uniform policy further down the newsletter. Please remember that

children are in summer uniform until the October half term. We encourage children to wear

watches but we do not allow jewellery of any kind and earrings must be

removed - they cannot just be taped over.

If you haven’t already please download the school app from the App Store or Google

play. Just search for St Mary’s Isleworth. I’ve included the RE newsletter and a list of

Masses for this term further down the newsletter. Please come to as many as you are able.

Further dates for parents’ evenings and Christmas productions will appear in the weekly

calendar in this newsletter. They will also be added to the online calendar which you

can view on our website or via the school app.

With Christ in our hearts we grow in love to help others.

Dear Parents Tuesday 5th September

You will probably be aware of recent concerns around physical inactivity and childhood obesity. As they go through Primary school, many children put on weight and, across the UK, around 35% of pupils in their final year of Primary are categorised as overweight or obese.

Experts have described this as an epidemic and a crisis that must be tackled before it is too late. The World Health Organisation regards childhood obesity as one of the most serious global public health challenges for the 21st Century. So far, no approach in the western world has made any difference, with millions of pounds spent on schemes which have had no lasting impact – and the situation continues to worsen.

There is, however, an initiative called The Daily Mile which was started in February 2012 by Elaine Wyllie, who was then headteacher of a large Scottish Primary school in Stirling. She was concerned by the children’s obvious lack of fitness and went on to prove The Daily Mile to be both sustainable and effective in combatting inactivity and obesity in her school. The result was that, in November 2015, the Scottish Government wrote to every Scottish primary school to recommend that they implement the scheme too. In addition, in August 2016 the UK government’s Childhood Obesity strategy identified and supported The Daily Mile’s contribution towards the recommended hour that children should spend taking daily exercise.

The Daily Mile is very simple to start in a school. Without wasting time to change into kit or change their shoes, every child in a school or nursery goes out each day in the fresh air to run, jog or walk for 15 minutes. It is not competitive: most children will average a mile in that time, with some doing more and some doing less. It is not PE, sport or cross-country but a physical activity which is aimed at improving the children's physical, social, emotional and mental health and wellbeing. It can help children to focus and concentrate in the classroom and raise their attainment.

Since 2015, The Daily Mile has been adopted by over 1,600 schools in the UK alone, proving extraordinarily popular with thousands of children, parents and teachers. The initiative is also attracting strong overseas interest, with both Belgium and the Netherlands launching nationally in 2016.

Now that the school site work is completed we are introducing The Daily Mile for all the children at St Mary’s to ensure its health and wellbeing benefits are available for everyone. The Daily Mile will take place on school gorunds.

As a school we are really excited about this new initiative and we are looking forward to the benefits it will bring to your child/children. To find out more about how it all works please visit: www.thedailymile.co.uk.

Kind regards

Mr S Lawlor

THE DAILY MILE

THE 10 CORE PRINCIPLES 15-minute turnaround from desk to desk

100% participation including children with SEN or ASN

Children run in their school clothes

It’s not competitive, it’s social and it’s fun

It happens outside in almost all weathers

Children can run, jog or walk

It should be kept simple and uncomplicated

Mark out a track or path – 5–10 laps works well

Risk assess your path/track – involve the children for ‘active learning’

There’s no need to warm up, no set-up, and no tidy-up – straight outside and off they go!

Year 3 Visit Richmond Synagogue On a boiling hot day in July, Year 3 went to a synagogue in Richmond, because

we had been learning about Judaism in RE. A synagogue is a Jewish place of worship, a bit like a church.

When we arrived at the synagogue, a lady welcomed us and told us to put our packed lunches on a bench in the shade. We couldn’t take them inside as the food might not be kosher (Jewish people have strict rules about food). Because it was a place of worship we knew we had to be sensible and respectful, so we did as she asked. One of the first things we saw was a Star of David in the ceiling, which let in beautiful coloured light. We also noticed there were separate entrance doors for men and women, although we just went in one door. Inside, the seats tipped up like seats in a cinema, but they were all around with the Bimah at one end (where they read the scriptures) and the Ark at the other. We were split into smaller groups. One group went to a room to see the feast of the Sabbath laid out and practised saying a traditional prayer in Hebrew. It was very hard! We ate challah bread and drank grape juice – Jewish people normally drink wine on Shabbat, but we weren’t allowed to!

Next, we got to look at the Torah in the Ark. This is the first five books of Moses from the Old Testament and it is written from right to left in Hebrew on animal skin. If they make a mistake, they have to start all over again and bury it like a person.

Page 9: St Mary’s, Isleworth Newsletter for The Nativity of the B ... · PDF fileSt Mary’s, Isleworth Newsletter for The Nativity of the B.V.M. 2017 CLASS ATTENDANCE 2nd – 9th March

Because it is so special, the Torah was hidden in a cupboard behind blue velvet curtains. When the doors opened everyone gasped, because the silver scrolls shone like the crown jewels. We were allowed to touch a scroll that wasn’t actually the Torah, but you can only touch the real thing with a silver pointer called the Yad, which means ‘hand’ in Hebrew.

Finally, boys and girls put on a prayer shawl and a kippah, the Jewish cap, which usually just men wear and we found out about some of the Jewish festivals and the Seder plate at Passover. We also learned that you can recognise a Jewish house because there are prayers on every doorway – except the toilets. It was a very enjoyable trip and we learned a lot about Judaism.

Dear Parent and Carers,

HAPPY SCHOOL BAG COLLECTION – MONDAY 11TH SEPTEMBER 2017

We are delighted to announce that the school is holding a textile collection for the Happy School Bag Fundraising Scheme.

This scheme is designed to help schools to raise funds and to help the environment by diverting discarded but reusable textiles away from landfill. In the UK alone we consume and discard over 1.4 million tonnes of textiles a year which goes directly into landfill despite the fact that there is spare capacity in textile recycling plants. By taking part in this scheme you help to reduce this amount by giving textiles a new lease of life.

To take part you simply need to fill the Happy School bag with unwanted but clean clothing. We accept both children’s and adult clothes including paired shoes, accessories (hats, belts, handbags, etc…), soft toys and bed linen.

Remember that the more you fill up the bag the more the school can raise; we receive a competitive rate of up to 65p per kilo; you can also use additional black bin bags if required.

This is a fantastic opportunity to raise eco-friendly awareness amongst children. Everyone can take part so spread the word and let’s get fundraising!

The Happy School Bag van will collect from our school on MONDAY 11TH SEPTEMBER 2017. Please bring all your bags before the start of the school day from 8am onwards and drop off by St Mary's bicycle shelter and help us have an amazing collection.

Many thanks for taking part!

Welcome to the RE newsletter. We welcome the pupils and parents back after what we hope was a relaxing summer break. This newsletter aims to bring you up to speed with what we will be doing in RE this year and also to inform you of important dates and events this year. We began the term by gathering together in the school hall for an assembly led by Mr Marsh. It was fantastic to see all the children together again and to hear their lovely singing voices ringing throughout the school. Already the children have started learning about their Class Saint. Each class will learn about a Saint and find out information about them. They have also been writing some prayers to begin the year. Friday 8th September has been designated as the St Mary’s Catholic Primary School Feast Day. We will be celebrating by attending a whole school Mass at 9.30am – please come and join us. We will be learning about some of the special names given to Mary, the mother of Jesus and then sharing what we have learnt in class. In line with our school homework policy RE homework will be set. This homework may be in the form of research or may take a more creative approach. Below is a table showing the RE topics for this year. Autumn 1 A6 Beginning with the Church

• The sacraments of Initiation

Autumn 2 B1 From Advent to Christmas • Advent Lectio Divina • Christmas – Christmas Around

There are also two multi-faith weeks. Please help your child by discussing what they are learning in RE and sharing with them your own faith experiences. Please speak to you child’s Class Teacher if you need any further information on how you can support your child at home with their learning in RE. Each week one or two classes will attend Mass at St Bridgets and Our Lady of Sorrows. The table below shows when each class will attend. Please feel free to join us for the masses if you are able. Don’t forget to give us your opinion about RE through the RE survey. You can do this by clicking here: http://bit.ly/2j2B5i8
