Prayer for Spiritual Communion My Jesus, I believe that You are present in the Blessed Sacrament.
I love You above all things, and I desire You with all my heart. Since I cannot now receive You sacramentally, I ask you to come spiritually into my heart. I embrace You as if You were
already in my heart and unite myself to You completely. Please do not let me ever be separated from You. Amen.
Dear Friends in Christ,
We are in the month of June now. June is traditionally dedicated to the Sacred Heart. May we strive each day with the
help of the grace of God to make our hearts more like Jesus’ Sacred Heart. Perhaps this month try praying the Litany of
the Sacred Heart more often or the traditional Reparation Prayer to the Sacred Heart. If you don’t have an image of the
Sacred Heart in your home, perhaps think about getting one. I will write more on the “Enthronment of the Sacred
Heart” in the home in a later column.
Last Tuesday, June 2, Bishop William Callahan announced that I have been named pastor of Sacred Heart Parish in
Polonia and Saint Mary’s Immaculate Conception Parish in Custer as of July 1st. Perhaps you are confused because
you thought I already was your pastor. I wouldn’t be surprised if you were confused. When I was assigned to Sacred
Heart and St. Mary’s in July 2019, I was not assigned as a pastor but rather as a parochial administrator. What’s the
difference?
When Sacred Heart and St. Mary’s became vacant when Fr. Greg Michaud was transferred, Bishop Callahan assigned
me to administer the parishes during the vacancy. A parochial administrator is a priest who takes the place of the pastor
and is bound by the same duties and possesses the same rights as a pastor (but is not actually the pastor). By law, as
parochial administrator, I am not permitted to do anything which prejudices the rights of the pastor (even though the
parishes are vacant and there is no pastor). I am also not permitted to do anything which can harm parochial goods
(usually understood as the financial situation of the parish).
I have mentioned that I was named parochial administrator when the parish became vacant. This is one of the times
when a parochial administrator can be named. The other is when the pastor is prevented from exercising his pastoral
function in the parish by reason of captivity, exile or banishment, incapacity, or ill health (or another similar reason).
There can only be one pastor of a parish so when a pastor is prevented from exercising his pastoral function, the bishop
can name a parochial administrator to take his place. There is always a sense of “temporariness” in naming parochial
administrators. Furthermore, they serve at the pleasure of the bishop and can be removed or transferred at any time.
However, as of July 1st, I will be your pastor. For the most part, things will look and feel the same. However, there is
no sense of “temporariness” to a pastor. The bishop might assign me with a six-year term or he may assign me without
any term—I do not know which at this time. I am very happy to be able stay at Sacred Heart and St. Mary’s as your
future pastor. There is grace that comes from God in the office of pastor: I pray that I may serve you well. As I continue
to pray for you daily, please pray for me as I become your pastor on July 1st. God bless you all.

Year of St. Joseph May 1, 2020 - May 1, 2021 MEMORARE TO ST. JOSEPH
Remember, O most pure Spouse of the Virgin Mary, my noble protector Saint Joseph, that never was it known that
anyone who fled to your protection, implored your help, or sought your intercession was left unaided. Inspired by
this confidence, I come to you, my spiritual father, and fervently commend myself to you. Despise not my petitions,
O Guardian of the Redeemer, but in your goodness hear and answer me. Amen.

Why Turn to St. Joseph? The year 2020 marks the 150th anniversary of Blessed Pius IX’s decree naming St. Joseph
Patron and Protector of the Universal Church. He is also the primary patron of the Diocese of La Crosse, and of course,
the Cathedral of St. Joseph the Workman is named for him.
In this challenging time of COVID-19, we can turn to St. Joseph with great hope:
We can turn to him as protector from harm, even as he protected Mary and the child Jesus from Herod’s wrath;
St. Joseph was worker and provider for the Holy Family, so to him we can entrust ourselves and our nation in the
face of unprecedented unemployment and economic distress;
As model husband and father, we turn to St. Joseph at a time when good examples of both are so desperately
needed. We can ask him to help strengthen our families – as well as the bonds of our “parish family” – at a time when
these can be fragile.
As patron of the dying, we can invoke the intercession of St. Joseph on all who are in their last moments of life,
including the elderly and others with terminal disease.
