St Mary’s Catholic Church Greenville, South Carolina @ @ @ @ @ 30 August 2020 Dear Friends in Christ, Keep Calm and Carry On. That slogan appeared on posters all over England during World War II, especially during the Blitz, and that same approach to living during a crisis serves us well now. Although some people remain at risk of serious illness or even death because of SARS-CoV-2, the public health emergency which began six months ago is now much more manageable than ever before, and we should therefore keep calm and carry on. Since the lockdown began in mid-March, the obligation to attend Sunday Mass has been dispensed for all persons, but in due course that will change. Indeed, in some dioceses around the country, it already has changed, and it is reasonable to expect that the same will happen here in the coming weeks. I fully expect that the dispensation from the duty to attend Mass on Sunday will remain in place for those persons described by the CDC as being at great risk because of age or underlying conditions and also for those who live with or care for persons who are at great risk. But for everyone else, it is time to go back to Mass. In anticipation of this development, for the past month we have been using Gallivan Hall as an extension of the church during all Sunday Masses, and although it is less than ideal in obvious ways, going to Mass in Gallivan Hall and receiving Holy Communion in the church either during or after Mass does work. Accordingly, we will continue to make that option available until we are able to open all our pews and invite everyone back into the church. No one knows when that moment will come, but we will reach that goal either when vaccines are available, when the general population develops herd immunity, when the virus burns itself out naturally, or from some combination of those three. To assist in keeping everyone safe, the diocese continues to ask that those who come to Mass wear masks, maintain social distancing, and purify their hands often. Here again I ask that common sense and generosity of spirit prevail and that everyone bear with other people with patient endurance, good humor, and gentle kindness. Although this virus is contagious and dangerous to many, it is not the Black Death, and for most of us normal activities can resume with simple precautions in place. Keep calm, and carry on. Of course, everyone should engage in careful risk assessment of their own, and then decide how to proceed. But anyone now dining in restaurants, regularly going out into public, or sending their children to school can have no reason not to come to Mass, and the same will soon be true for everyone except those who remain at great risk. So, unless you or someone you care for is at great risk because of age or illness, it is time to join us again at the altar for the Most Holy Eucharist. Keep calm, and carry on. Father Newman

Dear Friends in Christ,

Keep Calm and Carry On.

The classes meet on Wednesday evenings from 6.30 to 7.30 pm from Labor Day through Easter, and all are invited to come and discover what it means to be a disciple of the Lord Jesus in His holy Catholic Church

Coats may be dropped off in boxes located in the 1st floor hallway of Sacred Heart Hall. Please consider donating your gently used coats. All sizes from adult to small child are greatly needed and appreciated. Thank you in advance for your donation and showing your love of neighbor by helping our children stay warm this winter. Streaming Mass in Gallivan Hall Gallivan Hall is open during every weekend Mass to provide plenty of room for everyone. Mass is clearly visible and audible in Gallivan Hall thanks to our cinema screen and sound system, and the rest rooms to the left of the stage will be open.

Those who attend Mass in Gallivan Hall are welcome to receive Holy Communion either by walking over to the church during the Communion Rite or by coming immediately after Mass and waiting in the center aisle for the priest or deacon to begin a second distribution of Communion. These two options will allow for the reception of Holy Communion without a crowd forming in the church.

Please note that every other pew remains closed to allow for social distancing, and we continue to encourage strongly the wearing of a face mask and careful attention to hand washing and purifying to help reduce the spread of the virus. Our cry rooms remain closed because proper distancing is not possible in those spaces, and for now Confessions are being heard in the cry rooms on Saturday from 3.30 - 4.30 pm. The Wednesday afternoon Holy Hour has returned from 5.00 - 6.00 pm.

Finally, the dispensation from the Sunday obligation remains in force, which means that no one is required to attend Mass, even though all must find a way to keep the Lord’s Day holy, and the best way to do that is by joining in the sacred liturgy live-streamed on Sunday morning at 11 am. If you are at risk of the severe symptoms possible from exposure to SARS-CoV-2, then please stay home and join us in prayer remotely.
