Parish Mission Statement
Our Parish Family, under the influence of the Gospel, strives to be bold and fearless disciples of Jesus Christ. We witness to our Catholic
faith by living the Eucharist. We are the hands and feet of Christ in our service and in our joyful proclamation of the goodness of God.

Joyful News
Something old and something new. It
sounds like a line from an old adage
referring to brides and weddings. I think
that it refers to more than that. Our lives are
filled with things that are old, and, if we are
open to it, things that are new. Most of us
don’t like change in our lives, but we know it is inevitable. As we grow
our bodies change, we change jobs and houses. Some of these things we
face with great excitement, looking forward to what the future brings.
Other times we dread any change and just wish things would remain the
same. Always. However, they don’t; they won’t.
When I was preparing to move here to St. Mary, Cause of Our Joy, in
addition to the anticipation of becoming pastor, I had some concern,
just a little, about the house. I was giving up a comfortable bed and room
where I had lived contentedly for many years. Would all of my things
fit? How much privacy would I have? I was moving to a new house that
I didn’t even pick out for myself. Looking back, now they seem like silly
concerns, but they were real ones, for sure. And it all turned out fine.
God is good.
St. Mary Cause of Our Joy Parish is new. Just over 12 weeks new. Think
of all of the new things that can lie ahead, the new experiences coming,
the new friends to meet, the new ways of living our faith. There may be a little fear and anxiety in it, but in the long run we know that God is
here and will take care of us. He has so far in our lives, right? If we
continue to hold on to everything that “was” in the past, if we only want
to “go back to this or to that,” there will be no room for freshness, for
newness, for the Spirit to move. We will stifle the Spirit because we are
holding on so tightly. Let go. Let’s not exhaust ourselves trying to replicate everything (or at least the “everything” that I want) .
Pope Francis, during his visit to the United States a year ago this month,
said “Jesus came to save us from the lie that says no one can change.”
Yes, it may be tough, but you can. Trust God a little more and give it up
to Him.
May the Spirit lead us in ways that we could never imagine.

Week One of Faith Formation
(Sept 12) went pretty well. We
were happy to have many parents
present for the Opening Prayer
Service and Open House. Absentees were all
contacted with the hope that they will be
participating this year.
Our First Penitents are off to a good start
too. Once prepared, they will celebrate on
November 19 after their mini-Retreat with their
parents.
We use every inch of space in the Parish
Center including the Large Hall (for Confirmation
Prep) and the Resource Room/Library (for
Preschool-Kindergarten.)
We are fortunate to have two Catechists in
each space and trusty Hall Monitors and Office
Helpers.
Tomorrow brings a Fire Drill while the
weather is still decent.
Next week our second-year Confirmation
Candidates – all 22 of them, their parents and
sponsors will get oriented for their May
celebration with Bishop Cepeda. On Sunday,
October 9, at the Noon Mass, they will make a
firm commitment to do their best to prepare.
Children’s Choir Practice has begun on
Mondays from 7:15-8:00 pm. It is not too late
to join the fun.
Soon we will begin preparing for our Dec. 10
Breakfast in Bethlehem. It will look and feel
different this year. ALL children are invited to
take part in some way, shape or form. Save the
date for a very special event in preparation for
Christmas.
The Bottom Line Three buddies die in a car
crash and go to heaven. They are all asked,
“When you are in your casket and your friends
are mourning, what would you like to hear them
say about you?” The first guy says, “I would like
to hear them say that I was a great doctor and a
great family man.”
The second guy says, “ I would like to hear that I
was a wonderful husband and schoolteacher who
made a huge difference in the children of
tomorrow.” The last guy replies, “ I would like to
hear them say, “Look! He’s moving!”

Service in Christ, to support our priests' retirement. Our September Yellow Offertory envelope is earmarked for

Communion Means Common-Union
In difficult moments, it is necessary to trust in God’s help, through child-like prayer, and, at the same time, it is important to find the courage and the humility to open up to others, to ask for help, to ask for a helping hand. How often have we done this and then succeeded in emerging from our diffi-culty and finding God again!
In this communion—communion means common-union—we form a great family, where every member is helped and sustained by the others.
- General Audience, October 30, 2013
Reflection: If you have a particular problem, don’t hesitate to ask someone for help. Be open to experiencing God’s mercy through others. Don’t let fear hold you back. Ask them today!
LIFE CHAIN, October 2nd : Have an Impact for Life!
Next Sunday is RESPECT LIFE SUNDAY. St. Mary, Cause of Our Joy, is co-sponsoring a LIFE CHAIN with LIFESPAN near the intersection of Warren & Wayne Rds. as a part of National Life Chain Sunday 2016. Annually, on the first Sunday in October, LIFE CHAIN invites people in each city and town across North America to stand on a designated local sidewalk and pray for 90 minutes, while holding one of the following approved pro-life sign messages: “ABORTION KILLS CHILDREN”, “JESUS FOR-GIVES AND HEALS”, “ADOPTION: THE LOVING OPTION”, “LORD, FORGIVE US AND OUR NATION”, “ABORTION HURTS WOMEN”, “PRAY TO END ABORTION”, “LIFE—THE FIRST INALIENABLE RIGHT”. In 2015, over 1600 cities and towns held Life Chains (each Chain is posted at LifeChain.net). We need you to stand (or sit) for Life Next Sunday, October 2, from 2 to 3:30 pm. Bring a chair if you can’t stand and a rosary. Let’s show the people of Westland that Catholics Respect preborn human lives…and their mothers. To My Parish Family,
On August 8th, I had an unfortunate accident, where I dislocated and shattered my left elbow. Thank God I'm right handed. To simply say "Thank You" to all those whose caring spirit sent prayers my way is not enough to express my sincere gratitude. All I can say is may God Bless you all. Whether it was a prayer, a card, a phone call or a visit, my spirt was truly touched. It has been a very humbling experience to be in this situation. Your prayers have profoundly impacted my life, not just mine but my families also. Thank you again. With Sincerest Gratitude, Your Sister in Christ,
Emily Gnacke
