WEEKLY MESSAGE FROM FR. LARRY Dear Friends, Growing up in a family of twelve brothers and sisters, it was not uncommon for our parents to hear, “Hey, that's not fair!” How many times have you heard this spoken in your family? Family members challenge one another's generosity, operating from the perspective of limited resources. If we have given to one, perhaps there won't be enough for the other. Jesus wants us to understand that this is not how it is with God's mercy and forgiveness. God offers his love to all of us in abundance. The forgiveness of the father in the parable is an image of God's love for us, generous beyond measure in his love for both of his sons. Can we truly believe that God acts this way towards us and accept his mercy without jealousy, knowing that God's love for another does not diminish his love for us? As a family, talk about the words and phrases you speak to one another when angry. Identify words or phrases that reflect jealousy towards one another. Talk about why we sometimes feel jealousy towards one another. Review today’s Gospel and talk about why the older brother is jealous of the younger brother. Identify words that the family members in the parable might say to one another to begin to heal their broken relationships. Make a family commitment to say these types of words and phrases to one another with greater frequency. Pray together the Lord's Prayer. And most of all, love one another! Amen. Have a good week.

Larry Queridos amigos, Yo fui criado en una familia de doce hermanos y hermanas, y para mis padres no era nada raro escucharan: “¡Oye, eso no es justo!” ¿Cuántas veces has escuchado esto en tu familia? Los miembros de la familia retan la generosidad de los demás (entre ellos), me refiero en la perspectiva de recursos limitados. Si le hemos dado a uno de los niños, tal vez no haya suficiente para el otro niño. Jesús quiere que entendamos que esto no es así con referencia a la misericordia y al perdón de Dios. Dios nos ofrece su amor a todos nosotros en abundancia. El perdón del padre en la parábola es una imagen del amor de Dios pata todos nosotros, generoso y sin medida en su amor por sus dos hijos. ¿Podemos realmente creer que Dios actúa de esta manera hacia nosotros y aceptar su misericordia sin celos, sabiendo que el amor de Dios por los demás no disminuye su amor por nosotros? En familia, platiquen sobre las palabras y frases que utilizan cuando están enojados. Identifiquen palabras o frases que reflejen celos entre sí. Conversen sobre las razones por qué a veces sienten celos los unos con los otros. Repasen el Evangelio de hoy y hablen sobre por qué el hermano mayor está celoso del hermano menor. Identifique las palabras que los miembros de la familia en la parábola podrían decirse los unos a los otros para comenzar a sanar esas relaciones rotas. Haga un compromiso familiar para decir este tipo de palabras y frases entre sí con mayor frecuencia. Oren juntos la oración del Señor. Y, sobre todo, ¡amense los unos a los otros! Amén. Growing Homeless Problem

Please be advised that we continue to see a growing homeless problem and people coming to the Church asking for money and harassing parishioners. We have programs to help those who truly need help and we work with the Archdiocese to do this. Unfortunately, many people do not want this help because they refuse to get rid of their vices and addictions. We cannot help this group. I am asking that you not give money to those who come onto the parish property because this creates many problems. One, we’re not helping them, only hurting them more. Two, they have a tendency to vandalize. Lastly, if you want to help them, offer to buy them something to eat, but don’t give them money! The problem gets bigger because they don’t just come on Sunday but during the week when school is in session. Then we have a security issue. Your cooperation is appreciated!

Continuamos viendo un problema creciente de personas sin hogar, y personas que vienen a la Iglesia pidiendo dinero y acosando a los feligreses. Nosotros trabajamos con la Arquidiócesis porque ellos tienen programas para ayudar a estas personas necesitadas. Desafortunadamente, muchas personas no quieren esta ayuda porque se niegan a deshacerse de sus vicios y adicciones. No podemos ayudar a este grupo. Use creative problem solving to find new ways to protect children In the Protecting God’s Children program, adults learn how to identify potential signs of abuse and how to pick up on red glad behaviors that indicate a potential predator, even before abuse happens. Another tool in the arsenal of child protection is creative problem solving, where adults learn to think outside the box when it comes to finding solutions for protecting children. One very effective creative problem-solving tool is to refocus the group’s thinking, turning it away from the perceived “problem” and productively more toward a collaborative solution. Consider the challenge of how to deal with registered sex offenders whose children attend the school or participate in religious education at the parish. Rather than discuss the topic, the leader might ask participants to finish the following sentences, “Wouldn’t it be awful if…” and “Wouldn’t it be wonderful if…” Once everyone has provided responses, the group can look through the answers to find connecting themes that may provide a previously untried solution. They are competing to see who can best complete the Fitness Challenge, an obstacle course that will be set up on the school’s soccer field. They are also competing to see who can bring in the most pledges! If you go to the parish webpage – www.stmariana.org – and click on events, you will see two links for the Fitness Challenge. One describes the event, while the other leads you to the page where you can post your pledge for the priest of your choice (or for both if you wish). There are various support levels listed or you can add your own. You will be emailed a donation receipt for your gift. If you don’t have access to the webpage, please put your donation into an envelope with the priest’s name and “FITNESS” written on the envelope. Registration is currently underway at St. Marianne School for the 2019-2020 school year.
