Today’s feast commemorates how Jesus, as a baby, was presented to God in the Temple in Jerusalem. This presentation finds its complete and perfect fulfillment in the mystery of the pas-sion, death and Resurrection of the Lord. The Feast of the Presentation of the Lord is a combined feast, commemorating the Jewish practice of the purification of the mother after childbirth and the presentation of the child to God in the Temple and his buying back (redemption) from God. It is also known as the Feast of the Purification of Mary, and the Feast of Candle-Mas. It is also called the Feast of Encounter because the New Testament, represented by the baby Jesus, encountered the Old Testament, repre-sented by Simeon and Anna. Joseph offered two pigeons in the Temple as sacrifice for the purification of Mary after her childbirth and for the presentation and redemption ceremonies performed for baby Jesus. Every Holy Mass in which we participate is our presentation. Although we were offi-cially presented to God on the day of our Baptism, we present ourselves and our dear ones on the altar before God our Father through our Saviour Jesus Christ at every Holy Mass. Hence, we need to live our daily lives with the awareness both that we are dedicated people, consecrated to God, and that we are obliged to lead holy lives. We need the assistance of the Holy Spirit to recognize the presence of Jesus in our-selves and others: All those who, like Simeon and Anna, persevere in piety and in the service of God, no matter how insignificant their lives seem in men’s eyes, become instruments whom the Holy Spirit uses to make Christ known to others. In His plan of redemption, God uses these simple souls to do much good for all mankind. In other words, the Holy Spirit employs ordinary men and women with simple faith as His in-struments to bear witness to Christ, his ideals and teachings just as he used Simeon and Anna. The Holy Spirit reveals the presence of the Lord to us when we are recep-tive and eager to receive Him. Hence, let us be open to the promptings of the Holy Spirit within us to recognize the indwelling presence of the Lord in us and in others.

Greetings from Fr Eduardo. As you all know he cele-brated his 30th anniversary in the priesthood last Mon-day 27th Jan. Fr Ed said he was so lucky to be able to celebrate Mass at St Peter’s Basilica (near the tomb of St Peter) on this important occasion and special day. He took the
opportunity to pray for all of us his beloved pa-rishioners too. A photo of Fr Eduardo with his classmates (31 priests from other parts of the world) ↓
Recruiting new Altar Servers for St. Joachim’s Parish. We are in need of new Altar Servers to serve at all our Masses. It would be fabulous if parents with children in primary school would support and encourage their children to serve as Altar Servers. This would be the first step for the chil-dren to learn and grow in the love of God and His people. Training and mentor-ing will be provided. Please take an Application Form, complete it and return to the Parish Office or in the Collection bags. “When you take part in the Liturgy by carrying out your altar service, you offer a witness to all. Your absorption, the devotion that wells up from your heart and is expressed in gestures, in song, in the responses: if you do it correctly and not absent-mindedly, then in a certain way your witness is one that moves people.” – Pope Benedict XVI addressing altar servers on August 2, 2006.
