The Exaltation of the Holy Cross
“For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son…”
-John 3:16
God gave us the gift of His son so we can enjoy eternal salva-
tion. Of all our gifts, our life, is the most precious. We be-
long to God. This is why we must take time every day to ask
Him how He wants us to use the life He has given us
There was a man who was a railroad bridge operator, named
John who understood what it meant to give his only son for
others. The 107 Memphis Express with four hundred passen-
gers was coming and just as John was to lower the bridge, he
saw his young son was caught in the great rear wheels of the
drawbridge. He knew what he had to do. He lowered the
bridge just in time for the train to pass effortlessly, as tears
streamed down his face knowing that his son was now dead.
He saw the passengers in the windows as it passed unaware of
the tragedy that had taken place, He cried out: “I sacrificed my
son for you. Don’t you even care?”
Do we think to ask God how He wants us to live our lives for
others?
Columbus Day Mass
All people of Italian descent are invited to at-
tend the 10:00 a.m. Mass on Sunday October 12,
2014 at the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist to hon-
or Christopher Columbus, the discoverer of the
Americas, who brought Christianity to the New
World. We will celebrate our Italian ancestors,
who came to America in pursuit of freedom and
opportunity, strengthened by their faith, which
helped them endure hardship and adversity.
Everyone is invited to join with Italian families
from throughout the Savannah area in this special
celebration that remembers the struggles and tri-
umphs of our forebears in helping to build this great
nation, and salutes the vibrant cultural heritage of
Italian Americans.

Calling All Bakers
Anyone who would be interested in baking one or more
home made pound cakes for the October 11chicken din-
ner fundraiser are asked to contact Yvette Carr via email
at [email protected] or calling her evenings or
weekends at 657-5423. The cakes will need to be deliv-
ered to the Church hall no later than Thursday evening,
October 9 so that they can be sliced up on Friday. If you
need a pound cake recipe, please see the below.
CREAM CHEESE POUND CAKE
3 sticks butter or margarine 6 large eggs
1 8-oz package of cream cheese (softened) 3 cups sifted all
purpose flour
3 cups sugar dash salt
1-1/2 tsp vanilla
Cream butter or margarine, cream cheese* & sugar until light and
fluffy. Add vanilla. Add eggs one at a time. Beat well after each
addition. Stir in flour and salt. Spoon mixture into greased &
floured tube pan. Bake at 350 degrees for 1-1/2 hours or until done.
Since oven temperatures vary, check cake after 1 hr 15 minutes. If
toothpick inserted in center comes out clean, cake is done.
*The trick to the success of this cake is to soften the butter or marga-
rine and the cream cheese in advance (either leaving out on the
counter or put in microwave for 15 – 20 seconds). I mix these 2
ingredients first before adding sugar. Also, beat the eggs well but
when you add the flour and salt, just stir until well blended.
