Dear Friends and Neighbors, The last few weeks at St. Andrews have been chocked full of activity. On the social side we had an absolutely blow out on Friday Night (March 15) which began with a robust New Member Happy Hour and rolled into a rockin’ Friday Night in the View. It was one of those nights when electricity filled the air. Hors d’ oeuvres and casual dining in a relaxed atmosphere, coupled with cocktails, friendship, fun and comradery hit the roof. The surprise of the night was the appearance of Bobby Wilson Brooks. His duets with the scheduled entertainer, Alexandra Lewis, were fantastic and the dancing and singing shook the roof... A Night to Remember. On the athletic side was Camp St. Andrews 7th Annual Color War. Over 300 active participants in ALL forms of sports and card competitions had a great time. Aah yes, it takes us back to the days of Camp Wackahooka when life was simple. The laughter and enjoyment saturated our campus. Thanks to Ron Gallatin and Jennifer Ullysse – our co-captains for their endless efforts. I’ve forgotten who won-- ah yes, St. Andrews Won.- Again. Now we find ourselves in the midst of new elections to our Board of Governors which will be reported on April 14. The terms of four of our current Board – David Ross, (EVP, Construction Committee) - Howard Halpern (VP, Greens and Grievance) - Ellen Liebman (VP, Cards and Cultural Arts) and Hugo Florido (Secretary, VP and Legal) are up. David, Howard and Ellen have decided to run for the new Board - lucky for us! Their service to the community over last three years has been exceptional – long hours – no pay and a LOT of successful progress for the Club. Sounds perfect! Thank you, All Four of YOU for a GREAT job, well done! These folks will be joined in the election by Alice Newman Friedman, Wendy Kohansky, Ronald Hoffner and Jon Sherwin - worthy candidates as well. We are indeed very fortunate to have such an outstanding slate of candidates from which to choose. This April will also bring to a close my three year term as President. I am VERY fortunate and privileged to have served with such an outstanding group of Governors. We have worked collaboratively and collegially in executing our plans for the Club. Together we created and completed the $25mm Club Improvement Plan which has changed the face of St. Andrews and has contributed substantially to 200 plus home sales – and the addition of over 120+ new families to the Club. With this comes a highly energized desire to participate in all that St. Andrews has to offer and most importantly to a sense of welcome and friendship that is the heartbeat of St. Andrews. It is also appropriate for me thank our outstanding management team led by my buddy, Craig Martin and his compadre Rick Dente. Service and hospitality are cornerstones of St. Andrews life and as I have said many times, the Board does not run the Club - we govern. Craig and Rick and their staff run the Club and it is as a result of their efforts that St. Andrews is the Club of choice for high quality, country club life in Florida. The only piece of substantial business left to be completed is the merger with the POA. Let’s get that done!Lastly and surely not least, I feel very comfortable knowing that we leave the Club on very sound financial footing. With strong cash reserves and a conservative financial plan in place (again I repeat there is NO plan to replace the clubhouse or engage in any significant capital expenditure program) I strongly believe we will weather the vagaries of changing financial conditions in good stead. On behalf of Karen and myself, I thank you for the opportunity to serve St. Andrews. We will see you at the View.Very truly yours,

Steve IrwinPresident, Board of GovernorsP.S. Keep St. Andrews Moving Forward.

INSIDE StyleApril 2019

Dear Members:

We have been so proud to hear the responses from large groups of members how great the dining has been all season long. The service and food is of the highest quality and standards. Thank you for responding back to our ladies and gentlemen who are doing their best to serve your requirements.

The Color War was again another great event spearheaded by Coach Ron Gallatin. Ron’s passion and oversight to this annual event continues to make more members involved and happy to be participating.

Our great Club prospers tremendously by the leadership of outgoing President Steve Irwin, It has been a pleasure working side by side with Steve and I have much praise and respect to his leadership the last three years as President. He has led the Club through a significant period of success with more accomplishments under his tenure but namely the 25 Million dollar Club Improvement Plan and now the Merger of the two entities that looks very positive to a potential merger in the near future. He has put forth hundreds of hours of his expertise and guidance to the Board and management team. His role is a difficult one to balance with the constant stream of member input and feedback, and overcoming personal interruptions to his life and Karen’s. We owe them both a great deal of appreciation and I hope you will extend your personal and sincere appreciation for the dedication he puts forward daily on your club interest.

I wish our current Board members, David Ross, Ellen Liebman and Howard Halpern much success in getting reelected to serve another term on the Board. They, along with outgoing Board member Hugo Florido, have all done an outstanding job in serving extremely well in their roles of a Board member and leading various committees for your enjoyment.

Wishing you all a great upcoming Passover and Easter holiday and hope you’re able to enjoy time cherishing your family and friends especially if it is at your Club, St. Andrews Country Club.

On a final note, as we look to the summer months, we will begin the process of planning out summer events and activities to ensure that we maximize the offerings and services available to keep our year round members satisfied and engaged. Our desire is to solidify a listing of reciprocity with other clubs for golf and dining by the end of April.

We are working with the Greens Committee to bring in a top golf course industry turf expert to evaluate the turf/grass on the Fazio course. We will have this expert come and provide a report to us and will be transparent in their findings to the membership. We look forward to this USGA professional coming in the second week of April.

All best,

Craig D. Martin, C.C.M.

Chief Operating Officer & General Manager

P.S. Please remind your family and guests of the Club policies to ensure all members receive the highest service levels that make St. Andrews great.

Spring is here and we are looking forward to the summer months ahead. We still have an array of activities planned and the Club is filled each day with members and their families enjoying the incredible amenities and programing.

At this time of the season I would like to recognize the wonderful team of employees we have at St. Andrews Country Club. The department managers and their respective managers spent last summer diligently planning the calendar and I want to applaud them for a job well done. This year’s calendar has been filled with an incredible array of events and activities for our members and their families to enjoy. Golf, Tennis, Spa, Fitness, Dining, Cultural, Social, Children’s, Bridge and Card play. This has been one of our busiest and most successful years yet.

Thank you to all our employees who show up each day with a smile on their face ready to take care of our members. From the back of the house teams that the members do not often see…. Grounds maintenance, Golf Course maintenance, Facilities maintenance, Laundry, Administration, Accounting, Kitchen, Stewarding and Housekeeping to the front of house teams in all other areas and departments that connect with our members each day, we are especially grateful for their dedication and loyalty to making St. Andrews a truly special place to live and visit.

I would also like to thank all of our Members who volunteer their time to be part of the many wonderful committees we have at the club. Thank you for your time, energy, ideas, support and feedback. Thank you for being a voice for your fellow Members and supporting the management team to enhance each and every department of our club. Together, with the entire support of the membership we make St. Andrews the “best of the best.”

As the season winds down I would like to wish all of our seasonal member’s safe travels and a wonderful summer ahead. To our year round members thank you for being with us this summer and we look forward to spending time with you at the Club.

Dining

March was an extravagant month in Food & Beverage, we saw amazing events such as the Epicurious Tasting in the View, the Herb Garden Dinner with a Mediterranean flavor and the Opera singer Warren Tesh, six different Golf events, the Annual Color War, the Art Show, the Seafood Buffet and the special “Royal Chef Dinner” with celebrity Chef Darren McGrady.

During the month of March we served 53 special Dinner Buffets, along with daily A la Carte lunch and dinner in the Gallery and Lakeside. The Dessert Selections and the individual display of Desserts on all the Buffet were recognized as very improved and an appreciated addition to our menus and buffet presentations. Special thanks go to the Pastry Chef Peggy Stout and her team.

There is much more than a chef behind Chef Stout’s creations. This thriving talent started her career at PGA National as Pastry line cook while attending Florida Culinary Institute in Palm Beach. Decades later she has become one of the best Pastry Chefs in Southeast Florida, garnering praise from Members and clubs alike. While still in school she was selected to make the wedding cake for speaker Newt Gingrich’s daughter which was held in the US Capital building.

Gold medal Winner of the Culinary Arts Competition for American Culinary Federation of South Florida and three times medal Winner Florida Pastry competition in Orlando.

One of Chef Stout’s distinctive and exceptional quality is her amble personality, yet most incredible and sophisticated talent where knowledge is passed on to her team and the tradition has evolved into St Andrews signature style. Thanks to her dedication and passion St. Andrews is proud to be one of the few clubs where the entire pastry production is still made in house and customized to each and every event and special occasion.

Chef Stout’s philosophy is a continuous inspiration for her world of edible art. Since 1996 she has crafted interactive art, playing with a multitude of colors, textures, flavors and even perceptions. Her strikingly unconventional artworks are constantly evolving as Members and guests interact with them. Her ideas are creations!

On GreenTHE

March kicked off with the crowning of the 2019 Husband & Wife Club Champions and this year Maddy & Arthur Seeman shot a gross 82 to capture the crown for the first time. Other fight winners included Stacy Werner & Michael Andreozzi, Harriet & Howard Blum and Karen Allegianis & Eric Pierce. Congratulations to all our 2019 Champions.

The 26th Annual “Men’s Golf Classic” was next on the schedule and this year was the largest field ever. Team David Bender got out to early lead on day one and never looked back. They made Bridies on the 16th & 17th holes of day two to get to 19 under par and win by one shot. They were able to hold off a strong push from Team Robert Buchalter who recorded a 2-day total of 18 under par. Team Robert Zack finished in 3rd place at 17 under par and teams Lee Morris and Charlie Cartwright tied for 4th carding 16 under par for the 2-days. Captain David Bender led the team of Jay Green, Mark Glick, Peter Linchitz, and Steven Litinsky to victory not only in the Classic but

also in the “Dread-Sea Shootout” at the kick-off on Friday night. The event raised more than $32,000 for the Boca Raton Regional Hospital and has raised more than $700,000 over the past 25 years. Congratulations to all who helped make the event one of the best ever.

Next up was the Ladies’ Annual Member-Guest held on Thursday, March 14. Tournament Chairs & Sisters Amy Ross & Robin Rubin put together an amazing “EMOJI” event that was enjoyed by 180 members and their guests. The attention to detail was at every turn Breakfast, On the Course, and Lunch saw the Emoji theme throughout and the day was perfect. Guests even left with Emoji cookies in their cars. The ladies worked extremely hard to put together this wonderful day for everyone to enjoy.

St. Andrews Color War event was next on the schedule or as the members like to call it “Camp St. Andrews.” This spectacular 3-day event had more than 300 members participating in card games, tennis, fitness, and golf activities throughout the weekend. Then it moved in the St. Andrews room for fun with games that included Human Foosball, Pony Hop and of course the Team Song Competition. This year Team Black (Odd Addresses) captured the Color War Trophy but Team Red said they will be back and ready for 2020. Members then went into the Promenade for the awards reception. Congratulations to all who participated and to all our Color War winners.

The Ladies’ Annual 9-Hole Member-Guest was held on Thursday, March 22. Terry Greenstein and Joyce Wertheimer put together “Bollywood” and it was stunning. Members and their guests enjoyed a fun 9-hole event sandwiched between a wonderful brunch and cocktails & hors d’oeuvres. This amazing day wouldn’t have been possible without the hard work they did to make it such a success.

March closed out with the Crowning of the 2019 Play with the Pro Champions. This year Terry Farino’s Team took home the Championship. Her team included: Joan Babic, Eileen Goldman, Betty Ross & Arlene Tash!

Check out the Golf schedule to find out all the great events we have lined up for you in April.

It’s almost time to THINK back on our season of golf at St. Andrews this year and remember our fun days, great rounds, and places to improve…our minds ccan be an important asset in the game!

March was a busy month with both 9 and 18 hole Member-Guest Days. They were both spectacular events for all, and many Thanks and Kudos to the chairs – Robin Rubin and Amy Ross, 18 holer day, and Terry Greenstein and Joyce Wertheimer-Watsky for the 9 holer day. They will both be hard to top next year!

Also, our Club Championship was played in March and congratulations to all competitors and winners who will be featured in the May/June issue.

The South Palm Beach League is starting this month and will continue until October. It is a fun way to play other courses, when you are available, at a small fee to join and to play. Breakfast and lunch too! We are hosting the league on June 6, and will travel elsewhere every other Thursday through the summer. You need a 26 or better index to participate.

Our Spring Golf Tournament & Luncheon event will take place on April 16. It is a great way to be a final part of the SAWGA this season as may people start heading elsewhere for the summer. Also at the luncheon, the SAWGA Board will be elected for the 2019-2020 season. The theme is SEA you next SEASON and will be chaired by Sharon Fontini and Robin Milich for a second year! Colors of the day are water colors – emerald green, royal blue and turquoise. Please sign up in the Golf Shop and join us. We’d like to remind you that our weekly tournament schedule is a year-round one for both 18 and 9 hole golfers. So plan on playing even after our Spring event.

Finally, please feel free to contact Stacey Werner with any GLAD news you would like to share with SAWGA members. She is happy to hear and to pass it along. My GLAD news is a HOLE IN ONE on the Fazio 12th hole on March 9!

Happy Passover, Happy Easter and happy days to all.

Spring time has arrived, which means the busiest and most active part of our tennis calendar is upon us. Here are some terrific recent events to report on: The Annual Mixed Doubles Club Championships was once again a resounding success. We had 12 teams play in two divisions and after five rounds of competitive round robin play, winners were crowned. In the Blue Division, Sue Katz teamed with David Lomnitz to take home first place as they barely squeaked by the dynamic Finalist team of Karen Allegianis and Dennis Udwin. The Red Division was won by the experienced team of Janyce Speier and Jeff Cohen, who edged out Finalists Carin Boris and Jerry Goodman. Congrats to all!Our Men’s Member–Guest tournament, played under beautiful sunny skies, had a great turnout with 14 teams participating. Winners of the Djokovic Division were newcomer Scot Hunter, who teamed with guest Warren Rustin to beat the tournament favorites Russell Weisz and guest Gary Kay. The Federer Division winners were Gary Kiman and guest Steven Block, who beat out Finalists Kyle Silverman and guest Howard Weinstein. Congrats to all trophy winners!Another amazing tournament recently played was our always popular and famous Ladies’ Tennis Member – Guest. Wimbledon was this year’s theme as the ladies were decked out in their all white tennis attire. Candy Mesner and Lori Toffler did a fantastic job as co-chairs and event hosts. Thank you ladies for all your help and support! As for results, we had 4 Divisions battle it out and the following teams won awards.MARTINA NAVRATILOVA DIVISION WINNERS: Arleen Naids & Cindy WoldowMARTINA NAVRATILOVA DIVISION FINALISTS: Susan Emby & Lauree VastaSTEFFI GRAF DIVISION WINNERS: Robin Meireles & Chrisana BlancoSTEFFI GRAF DIVISION FINALISTS: Carin Boris & Heidi BoncherSERENA WILLIAMS DIVISION WINNERS: Karen & Santa AllegianisSERENA WILLIAMS DIVISION FINALISTS: Etta Zimmerman & Amy Fibus HendricksVENUS WILLIAMS DIVISION WINNERS: Sue Weber & Ginger DevlinVENUS WILLIAMS DIVISION FINALISTS: Lara Polner & Karen SchwartzOne final event to report on is our Annual Color War competition, which had a record turnout with 46 players participating in our tennis event. We also had our Jr. Kids Color War event and for the first year ever we had Color War Pickleball competition. Thanks so much to everyone for all their help and support in making this past month one of the best ever at beautiful St. Andrews Country Club. See you on the courts!

PLAY FOR P.I.N.K.The members of St. Andrews supported PLAY for P.I.N.K. in the most spectacular event to date. 160 golfers, a full complement of tennis players and more than 130 sponsorship signs were displayed all over the courses. We anticipate that all 100% of the $65,000 will be donated to BCRF. PFP donations were part of the $62 million BCRF awarded to more than 300 researchers in 15 countries. Most recently the BCRF-funded researchers were involved in the study that resulted in the FDA-approval of a new drug targeting hormone - positive metastatic breast cancer. That is the POWER of RESEARCH and we are showing our support.

The committee comprised of Alice Kent, Stacy Werner, Judy Cooperman, Hillaine Kroft, Darlene Eisenstein and Janyce Speier, Harriet Shapss and Lisa Shapiro were exceptional.

Thanks to all,

Shelley Harris

The excitement over Color War this year was it the highest level ever. Members came into the gym who weren’t even signed up for it, took a look around, and ended up doing events just to participate and help their team win. Our oldest competitor was 94 years old and he did two events on Friday. He came back on Saturday asking if he could do any other events! It was this kind of enthusiasm that grabbed the members and the staff alike. We found our new way of assigning judges this year kept judging fair across-the-board. I always miss the tug-of-war on the years we have to move the activities inside but it will be back next year along with more Fun, more Excitement, and more Team Spirit! Congratulations Black and Red.

Maureen Buchbinder Nutrition Educator

Are you always hungry? Do diets work over the long term? Absolutely not! What if it is overeating that causes us to get fat, but the process of getting fatter that causes us to

overeat? The more calories we lock away in fat tissue, the fewer there are circulating in the bloodstream to satisfy the body’s requirements. It seems to be a distribution problem. We have an abundance of calories, but they’re in the wrong place, and they are not working for us. As a result, the body needs to increase its intake. We get hungrier because we’re getting fatter. When fat cells suck up too much fuel, calories from food promote the growth of fat tissue instead of serving the energy needs of the body, provoking overeating in all but the most disciplined individuals. This is why diets that rely on consciously reducing calories don’t usually work. So, what do we do? Well, many biological factors affect the storage of calories in fat cells: levels of physical activity, sleep, and stress. But one has an indisputably dominant role: The Hormone: INSULIN. We know that excess insulin treatment causes weight gain, and insulin deficiency causes weight loss. And of everything we eat, highly refined and rapidly digestible carbohydrates produce the most insulin, they are chips, crackers, cakes, soft drinks, sugary breakfast cereals, and even white rice, and bread.THE SOLUTION: GET OUR INSULIN IN BALANCEEat in balance: Healthy Fats, Low Glycemic Carbohydrates: like lentils, beans, quinoa, Ezekiel bread, and Lean Protein. Exercise regularly and consistently: If you plan to exercise for 3 months and take a break for a month, forget about it… do not even start exercising. Exercising is part of your day & it makes you feel better.Less stress: we all have stress, we can choose how to deal with it. The hormone cortisol, causes weight gain or lack of weight loss.Get your sleep: technology has been a disturbance to our sleep. Think wisely. Sleep is essential for keeping our insulin in balance.Eat Slower: enjoy your food, and taste your food. The best thing you can do to better your digestion, is to eat slower. When you eat slower, the nutrients will be better assimilated and you will feel fuller and more satisfied. If you fall off the wagon, no guilt, we are human, just get back on, and embrace your health, not your weight, and you will be more successful with reaching your ideal body weight.

ALWAYS HUNGRY

CateringWe are indeed very fortunate at St. Andrews Country Club to have many wonderful activities for our members to choose from such as Golf, Tennis, Bridge, Spa Activities and much, much more. As is the case with all of these activities, there are codes of conduct and rules to follow to ensure everyone has the best experience possible. This is also the case with private events. When private events take place in either the Promenade Room or the St. Andrews Ballroom, every effort is made to provide signage in strategic locations to provide our membership with notice that these rooms are in use and, therefore, not accessible. As with the codes of conduct for the above-mentioned activities, the same applies to meetings and events. We respectfully ask that if there are signs indicating a private event, that the membership will avoid entering those areas as a courtesy to the member or, outside client, hosting the event. We appreciate in advance your attention to this request.
