My dear family of St. Andrew the Apostle!
Why 153 fish? Numbers in the Bible are symbolic and significant, so what is so important now, for us, in that number 153? According to St. Jerome, at that time there were only 153 known species of fish. Jesus had already called the disciples “fishers of men” (Mark 1:17), but they focused initially exclusively on Israel. Now, after His death and resurrection, Jesus is again reminding His Apostles and disciples by this miraculous catch of 153 fish that they have now been called by God to catch men and not fish. The number 153 represented every possible, known people group in the world at that time, in other words, the whole world. EVANGELIZATION and the Good News is meant for ALL!
When Jesus first called the Apostles and disciples “fishers of men,” it had also been after Simon Peter, Andrew, and some friends were out fishing all night on the Sea of Tiberias and had caught nothing. They’re at it again, this time after Jesus’ resurrection, fishing out all night, catching nothing. This group of seven Apostles and disciples, again at a “stranger’s” direction, throw their nets into the water on the right side of the boat, and after they listen and obey, they haul in a huge catch — such an enormous amount of large fish that the net is on the verge of breaking. 153 large fish! And John understands the miraculous sign and recognizes Jesus with the words he says to Peter, “It is the Lord!” The Lord is helping us to fish! The disciples learn now that they could no longer do without Jesus. They weren’t even capable of practicing their old profession properly without Jesus. His word was necessary for them to catch fish, and He was the one waiting for them with bread and fish to eat. Jesus subtly lets His disciples know: when things in our lives take a different path than the one we expected, we sometimes tend to want to fall back on the things we used to know, our old certainties. Jesus says, “No, rather follow me.” In both Hebrew and Greek, the letters of the alphabet serve as both letters and numbers. So every word can also be a number. For example, the book of Proverbs contains exactly 375 proverbs from Solomon (Proverb 10:1 and 22:16) which exactly matches the numeric value of his name “Solomon” in Hebrew. Proverbs 25:1 to 30:1 consist of 140 proverbs gathered and edited by the appointment of King Hezekiah. The numeric value of Hezekiah’s name is 140. So it is interesting to note that 153 is the numeric value of the expressions: “The Passover (Ha Pesach),” and also of the words “Sons of God (Bene Ha Elohim).” We are the “sons of God” who need to take the message of Jesus our Passover Lamb to all the peoples of the world. St. Augustine mentions that salvation in Christ involves the 10 Commandments plus the 7 gifts of the Holy Spirit, and when you add together all the numbers between 1 and 17 you get 153. Hence, the 153 fish signify that all the elect are to be saved by the gift of grace (7) and the following of the commandments (10). This Gospel story states the disciples marvelled at the fact that their net held together even though it contained so many large fish (John 21:11)! So, symbolizing abundance, 153 even represents an OVERFLOW blessing from God. Additionally, the catching of such a large amount of fish happened only after Christ became involved in the work. This is a subtle (or perhaps not so subtle!) reminder that without Christ the disciples’ (and any believer’s) attempts to accomplish something great on their own will fail, but that with Jesus all things are possible (John 15:5). Jesus comes to bless us. One interesting calculation from the Scriptures may also enlighten the importance of the number 153. All told, the Lord directly blessed a grand total of 153 people in 48 separate incidents! These incidents include, for example, where Jesus blesses a person suffering from an unclean spirit, or being deaf, blind, a leper, or the woman accused of adultery, or where Jesus blesses a non-Israelite woman and her daughter, or numerous others by name, like Mary Magdalene, Zaccheus, Nicodemus and Lazarus — all told 153 people Jesus personally blessed and touched as the Savior of mankind.
Sometimes, for all kinds of reasons, we lose sight of our first calling. There is no time like the present to take it up again, to cast our nets out and to teach people of every ethnic group to be disiciples, beginning with our own families. Vanessa Steffens sums it up beautifully when she says, “Instead of trying to hold on to the familiar things of the past, God is longing to reveal to us the future He has for us, through His presence and anointing. When we choose to leave the safety of the hiding places we made for ourselves and allow Jesus to be our place of safety, He will feed and equip us and let us know exactly where we need to spread out our nets.”
God is abundantly blessing us in this Easter season with His new life! Let us spread out our nets, following the command of Jesus and the example of the early Apostles and disciples to bring God’s blessing to everyone we encounter in the waters of life in this world!
In the loving Hearts of Jesus and Mary, Fr. Gregor

In this Sunday’s Gospel, the disciples finally recognize Jesus and proclaim “It is the Lord!” Jesus told Peter to, “Feed my lambs, tend my sheep and follow me.”
Jesus calls us to do the same not in big things but in little acts of faith and compassion.

Worldwide Marriage Encounter
Think of how tired, discouraged and frustrated the apostles must have been in the Gospel reading today. Then Jesus shows up and tells them to try one more time. Because they were willing and obedient, Jesus blessed them
abundantly. It works the same way in our own lives today; if we trust in Jesus and do what He tells us to do we will receive His abundant blessings! Allow the grace of God to strengthen, renew and rekindle your marriage relationship. Do you remember Peter on the night Jesus was arrested? He claimed he had never heard of Jesus. Today we are called to join Peter in testifying to the name of Jesus as he does in the first reading, and in proclaiming our love for him as Peter does in the Gospel passage. The power-ful imagery of John’s vision in the second reading from the book of Revelation shows us the company we keep when we have faith in the name of Jesus. We join all living creatures, “countless in number” from “heaven, earth, under the earth, in the sea; everything in the universe” (Revelation 5:11, 13). The dignity and majesty described in each reading are in stark contrast to the dark and pitiful image of Peter and the other apostles at the time of Jesus’ arrest, trial, and crucifixion. What a relief that we can all be redeemed so completely!

Please call the parish office by Monday at (815) 886-4165 for the name of your loved one to be placed for 3 weeks on our short term prayer list. Also, please call the parish office, if you are hospitalized and would like a visit from our hospital ministry team or homebound and in need of communion.
Hospital Visitation of Parishioners
Please remember that if you or any family members find yourselves in a hospital, be sure to let them know you are a parishioner at St. Andrew’s — it doesn’t hurt to say it a few times, either! Whenever we priests, deacons or Eucharistic Ministers come to visit, we check the hospital list of parishioners printed under “St. Andrew.” But if you’re not listed as a parishioner of St. Andrew, we won’t know you’re even there! We do not want to miss you! You can always call us, too, at the office, ext. 301. Thank you. May the Lord Jesus be with you all your days, to love and be loved by Him, to honor and serve Him, as He honors and serves us!
A COMMUNITY OF WORD AND SACRAMENT
SACRAMENTS OF INITIATION CATECHUMENATE
The Catechumenate is a community which gathers those adults who have not been baptized, and seek deeper insight into the Christian faith.
BAPTISM OF CHILDREN We joyfully celebrate the baptism of children of Christian households which are joined to our weekly worship, and have active registration in our parish community for at least 3 months. After registration in the parish, please attend an Evening of Awareness, if you have not attended a class in the past two years, to register for Baptism and select a date. Classes are presented on the first Wednesday of each month at 7:30 p.m. in the Parish Hall. Baptism is celebrated on the third Sunday of the month at 1:30 p.m.
EUCHARIST AND CONFIRMATION Formation for those coming first to the table of the Lord as children is infused into the efforts of our school and Faith Formation Office. Confirmation formation is a two year process completed in eighth grade. Please call the Faith Formation Office for more information.
SACRAMENTS OF COMMITMENT MARRIAGE
Marriage preparation is a six month process of prayer, reflection and study. Couples work with both the presider and a sponsor couple through this process. Please note that this six month period of preparation is essential.
ORDERS Those seeking assistance in discerning a call to ordained ministry are encouraged to call the parish offices.
SACRAMENTS OF HEALING RECONCILIATION
Reconciliation is available each Saturday afternoon, 3:00pm, Wednesday evening, 5:45-6:45pm, through seasonal communal services, and by appointment.
ANOINTING Anointing of the Sick is offered through seasonal services, and always by request. If hospitalized, please immediately seek anointing from the Catholic chaplain.
BULLETIN SUBMISSIONS Submissions are usually due Fridays at noon, nine days prior to publication. Send to [email protected]. Some early deadlines apply during the holidays.
