The angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, “Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary your wife into your home. For it is through the Holy Spirit that this child has been conceived in her. She will bear a son and you are to name him Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins.” All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had said through the prophet:
Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and they shall name him Emmanuel, which means “God is with us.”

My dear family of St. Andrew the Apostle!
This past week I couldn’t stop thinking of the following passage from St. Paul’s letter to the Romans: “We know that all creation is groaning in labor pains even until now; and not only that, but we ourselves, who have the firstfruits of the Spirit, we also groan within ourselves as we wait for adoption, the redemption of our bodies. For in hope we were saved. Now hope that sees for itself is not hope. For who hopes for what one sees? But if we hope for what we do not see, we wait with endurance. In the same way, the Spirit too comes to the aid of our weakness; for we do not know how to pray as we ought, but the Spirit itself intercedes with inexpressible groanings. And the one who searches hearts knows what is the intention of the Spirit, because it intercedes for the holy ones according to God’s will. We know that all things work for good for those who love God, who are called according to his purpose” (Rom 8,22-28).
Our parish family of St. Andrew the Apostle experienced a great loss this week, the death of one of our parish employees, our Communications Secretary, Darlene, who was called to God according to his purpose. She quietly, bravely, beautifully has been fighting cancer for a number of years — but you wouldn’t know it being with her, because of her good ol’ fashioned grit and beautiful, positive strength of character! Cancer is such a terrible disease, hitting even our younger people like Darlene. Please keep her and her family in your prayers these last days of Advent as we finish our preparations for next week’s Christmas celebration. This creation truly is groaning as in labor pains, as we wait for the full revelation of the children of God and for adoption, the redemption of our bodies. Darlene was our Communications Secretary, and so we need to seek someone like her, who could work with our bulletin, website, database, and perform general parish office duties with the others of our office and parish staff. The Communications Secretary is responsible for designing the weekly bulletin, helping maintain and update our website, and, along with other parish secretaries and staff, helping with welcoming parishioners and visitors to the parish office, directing them to the person(s) who can meet their request, room scheduling, answering phones, maintaining sacramental and parishioner records, and other general and occasional secretarial assistance for the pastor and staff. Good communication and interpersonal skills are important, as well as the ability to work collaboratively. English is needed and required, but another language would also be helpful in our multilingual and multicultural parish. Candidates must have a desire to use their skills to support the mission of the Church. Some office experience required, as well as a high school diploma — some higher education is desirable. Knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, and Publisher is required. Experience with some kind of database is desirable; we currently use ACS. Although rarely, some night and weekend availability may be needed. This position currently is part-time with no benefits. Resumes will be accepted until the position is filled. Resumes and cover letters can be mailed or delivered to our Parish Office or emailed to: [email protected].
Today’s Gospel speaks of the anguish and “groanings” St. Joseph, a righteous man, experienced when he heard that his betrothed wife was now pregnant. Before God intervened with the message from the angel, St. Joseph thought best to divorce her quietly, because he was unwilling to expose her to shame (or even to death). However, before Joseph could act on any of his intentions, God sent to him the angel with the message that Mary was pregnant with God’s Son through the Holy Spirit, and he was to name Him Jesus, who will save us from our sins. After this moment, described as St. Joseph’s Annunciation, he did as the angel of the Lord had commanded him and took his wife into his home. We know, we believe, and we have hope, like St. Joseph, that all things work for good for those who love God, who are called according to his purpose. We also believe this for Darlene and her immediate family, as well as her extended family, of which we are all a part. All creation is groaning in labor pains even until now… but we groan with hope-light in our hearts!
In the loving Hearts of Jesus and Mary, Fr. Gregor
Thank you

December 18, 2016, 4th Sunday of Advent
We read in the gospel that names are given the One incarnated in Mary’s womb: Jesus, meaning “God saves the people from their sins” andEmmanuel, meaning “God is with us.” The names reveal that the presence of God among us and the forgiveness of our
sins. We pray for those who do not know that God is our “Savior”. We pray for those who do not know that God is “Emmanuel”, may our lives be a sign of charity.
Amen

SUMMONED BY GOD
As Christmas draws near, Advent’s scriptures lure us into a world of dreams, signs, wonders, and the miracle of the virgin birth. Too often we allow the great stories of our faith, the ones that are most familiar, simply to wash over us. Today’s Gospel account of the events leading up to the birth of the Lord reads like a present-day soap opera. Yet Joseph’s courage, even in the midst of what must have been an incredibly confusing time, provides a model for us. Each week, we are summoned by God to embrace the way of goodness and truth through the proclamation of God’s holy word. Like Joseph, we are called to do as the Lord commands us. As we stand at the threshold of Christmas, let us have the courage to be open to whatever it is that the Lord will require of us as we celebrate the miracle of Bethlehem.

FAMILY FAITH
FORMATION
4th SUNDAY OF ADVENT
Family Connection
One of the challenges of faith is to recognize God's plan for us and to remain open to God's will and God's actions in our world. Filled with God's grace, Mary models for us the kind of faith that is needed to cooperate in God's plan of salvation. Like Mary, we
are given the awesome opportunity to cooperate in God's saving plan. On this final Sun-day of Advent, our Gospel invites us to consider how our preparations for Christmas
have made us more aware of God's grace working in our lives.
Gather together your family and talk about what you have been doing as a family to pre-pare for Christmas. How have these preparations helped you to better celebrate the cen-tral mystery of Christmas, the Incarnation? Our Gospel today talks about how Mary was prepared for her role in Christ's birth. Read today's Gospel, Luke 1:26-38. Consider the question: What enabled Mary to say yes to God? Which of your Advent activities have made you more aware of God's grace in your life? Conclude in prayer together that God's grace will enable your family to be more faithful and obedient to God. Pray to-gether the Magnificat.

The Catechumenate is a community which gathers those adults who have not been baptized, and seek deeper insight into the Christian faith.
BAPTISM OF CHILDREN We joyfully celebrate the baptism of children of Christian households which are joined to our weekly worship, and have active registration in our parish community for at least 3 months. After registration in the parish, please attend an Evening of Awareness, if you have not attended a class in the past two years, to register for Baptism and select a date. Classes are presented on the first Wednesday of each month at 7:30 p.m. in the Parish Hall. Baptism is celebrated on the third Sunday of the month at 1:30 p.m.
EUCHARIST AND CONFIRMATION Formation for those coming first to the table of the Lord as children is infused into the efforts of our school and Faith Formation Office. Confirmation formation is a two year process completed in eighth grade. Please call the Faith Formation Office for more information.
SACRAMENTS OF COMMITMENT MARRIAGE
Marriage preparation is a six month process of prayer, reflection and study. Couples work with both the presider and a sponsor couple through this process. Please note that this six month period of preparation is essential.
ORDERS Those seeking assistance in discerning a call to ordained ministry are encouraged to call the parish offices.
SACRAMENTS OF HEALING RECONCILIATION
Reconciliation is available each Saturday afternoon, 3:00pm, Wednesday evening, 5:45-6:45pm, through seasonal communal services, and by appointment.
ANOINTING Anointing of the Sick is offered through seasonal services, and always by request. If hospitalized, please immediately seek anointing from the Catholic chaplain.
I would like to have my house blessed. Please contact me to make arrangements.
