Theological Questions Answer to last week’s question: How many offices does the Vatican have? In answer to the question, “How many people work in the Vati-can?” Pope St. John XXIII once jokingly answered, “About half.” But seriously, there are about 3,000 employees who staff the various administrative departments (called “dicasteries”) of the Vatican’s Roman Curia. These dicasteries may be classified as Secretariats, Congregations, Tribunals, Councils, Offices or Commissions. Three Secretariats: of State, for the Economy, and for Commu-nications. There are two recently re-organized “dicasteries”: for the Laity, Family and Life; and for Promoting Integral Human Develop-ment. Nine Congregations: for the Doctrine of the Faith, for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments, for Oriental Churches, for Evangelization of Peoples, for Bishops, for Cler-gy, for Consecrated Life and Societies of Apostolic Life, for Catholic Education, and for Causes of Saints. Three Tribunals (courts of appeal): the Apostolic Penitentiary, the Apostolic Signatura, and the Roman Rota. Five Pontifical Councils: for Promoting Christian Unity, for Interpretation of Legislative Texts, for Interreligious Dialogue, for Culture, and for Promoting the New Evangelization. Three Offices (financial): the Apostolic Camera, the Admin-istration of the Patrimony of the Apostolic See, and the Prefec-ture for the Economic Affairs of the Holy See. Seven Pontifical Commissions: for the Cultural Heritage of the Church, for Sacred Archeology, for Latin America, for the Pro-tection of Minors, the Pontifical Biblical Commission, the Inter-national Theological Commission, and Ecclesia Dei (dealing with the use of the Latin Mass). There are also several tempo-rary commissions that are set up for relatively short term pro-jects that involve several dicasteries working together. There is a long history to the development of the numerous dicasteries, and there is general agreement that some re-organization and reform is desirable, to eliminate excessive bu-reaucracy, and to increase efficiency. Pope John Paul II made several reforms, and Pope Francis is continuing this effort. New Question: What does the word “Alleluia” mean? See next week’s bulletin for the Answer

FATIMA INDULGENCE

Pope Francis has granted a plenary indulgence for the 100th anniversary of the Fatima apparitions throughout the centennial year, from the 27th of November 2016 till the 26th of November 2017. To obtain the plenary indulgence, the faithful must ful-fill the ordinary conditions: go to Confession and Com-munion, be interiorly detached from sin, and pray for the intentions of the Holy Father. In addition, the faithful may visit with devotion a statue of Our Lady of Fatima solemnly exposed for public ven-eration in any church, oratory or proper place during the days of the anniversary of the apparitions, the 13th of each month from May to October 2017, and there devoutly participate in some celebration or prayer in honor of the Virgin Mary. The faithful must pray the Our Father, recite the Creed and invoke Our Lady of Fatima.

Facility Update As many of you know, the parish facility is in need of a new HVAC chiller. The one in use now is the original (25 years) and “at or past its useful life”. The project has been approved by the dio-cese and their Office of Planning, Construction and Facilities has been spearheading the project. Our HVAC project was put out to bid and the con-tract awarded to J&D Mechanical Services, Inc. Fr. Mould and our Facility Manager, Michael Fallin, met with all parties for a pre-construction conference in July. While the installation of the new chiller is not scheduled until October 2017, J&D Mechanical will be on site starting in August for some of the preliminary work for the church/school facility. The HVAC for the rectory will be occurring earlier this fall and this installation should not affect any parish facility operations.
