Test Form No: 789MP7 (English language and comprehension)

Name: Raman Yadav

Roll No:1601035176

Following are the questions in which I found discrepancies in the answer key provided by SSC

Q 59) The writer took out his wallet the first time to

Answer given is (B) look for the receipt. But we cannot surely say he did not take out the wallet when he bought magazines. So the Question sounds ambiguous and answer to the question could also be (A) buy some magazines.

Q62) In the passage ‘situation’ means

Answer given is (D) position, but the answer should be (C) condition. He explained his condition that he had lost his receipt and was not able to find it. So it is the condition of the writer which is explained not his position.

Q 94) I told the teacher/ that the homework set for the day/ was much too heavy for us to complete

Answer given is (D) No Error, but the answer can also be (C). If we write ‘too heavy for us’ that can also be a correct answer. So the answer could be both C and D. So the question should be cancelled and everyone should get the bonus marks for it.

Q 105) We should go_____ doing more good than harm

Answer given is (C) about but the correct answer should be (A) on. We use phrasal verb ‘go on’ as keep on doing something, so it is a continuous process we should undertake.

Q 107) Neo-colonialism is_________ that persists even after the demise of the formal colonization all over the so called Third-world.

Answer given is (A) a monster, but the answer can also be (B) a devil. It is because both monster and devil are synonym to each other so we can use both interchangeably. So the question should be cancelled and everyone should get the bonus marks for it.

Q 144) Rearrangement of the sentence in correct way

1. Child Labourers are posing a grave problem before India.P. Children are paid low wages and the heinous opportunism of employers leads to the employment of children.Q. The govt is indifferent to this problem and common people lack awareness in guarding against this social crime.R. It is the extreme poverty of parents that leads children to earn at a minor age.S. The illiteracy of parents is also responsible for this evil.

6. For the solution of this problem we need a thorough economic reform and the spread of literacy.(A) QPSR (B) PQSR (C) QPRS (D) RSPQAnswer given is (D) RSPQ but the correct answer should be (C) QPRS. First sentence should be followed by ‘Q’ as this sentence follows the problem faced by child labourers and Govt is indifferent to this problem. So the two sentences are connected to each other. And also the sentence ‘S’ should come just before the last sentence ‘6’ as both the sentences talk about the literacy.

Q 146) 1. The telescope, originally invented by a Dutch spectacle maker Hans Lippersky was kept a secret.

P. He made a high powered telescope from the lenses got from spectacle makers.Q. Then in 1609, Galileo heard about the invention,R. He presented a telescope of a higher power to the Venetian Senate.S. He conducted his own experiments and discovered the secret within 24 hours.

6. Galileo became famous as the inventor of the telescope because he made it popular.(A) PQSR (B) QSPR (C) RPQS (D) QRPSAnswer given is (B) QSPR but the answer can also be (A) PQSR. Because in the first sentence it is given that Han

was a spectacle maker so he could have made a high powered telescope from the lenses taken from different spectacle makers, so ‘1’ could be followed by ‘P’. So the correct sequence can also be PQSR.

Q 171) Change of voice: Let us help him(A) Let him help us(B) Let he is helped(C) Let he be helped(D) Let him be helped by us

Answer given is (D) but the correct answer should be (C). It is redundant to write ‘by us’ in the end of such sentences. For example Passive voice of ‘Let us help the poor’ should be ‘Let the poor be helped’. We should not write Let the poor be helped by us because it evident the he will be helped by us.

Q 179) The toddler has a habit of throwing tantrums (A) expressing emotions

(B) expressing frustrations(C) expressing happiness(D) No improvement

Answer given is (B) but the correct answer should be (D) as there is no error in using throwing tantrums. Meaning of ‘throwing tantrums’ is usually the anger is expressed by shouting and crying, so every toddler has this habit of crying and shouting which also means throwing tantrums.

Q182) The air-conditioner has made ceiling fans a little redundant in today’s world.(A) Superfluous(B) Obsolete(C) Extinct(D) No improvement

Answer given is (B) Obsolete but the answer should be (D) No improvement. Obsolete means out of date or no longer of any use whereas Redundant means not necessary. So ‘redundant’ is more apt as compared to ‘obsolete’ in this context because we can’t use obsolete for ceiling fans as we still found fans in every room of every household but they can be redundant when air-conditioner is used in a room for cooling.

Q186) Because that there were heavy rains the lake was flooded.(A) Because of the(B) As there were(C) Since there was(D) No improvement

Answer given is (B) but the correct answer can also be (A). There is no definite reason why we cannot start a sentence with Because of. So both the option can be correct. So the bonus marks should be given to everyone.

Q 191) The train rolls along the track. (A) rumbles

(B) rattles(C) ripples(D) No improvement

Answer given is (A) rumbles but the answer can also be (B) rattles. Rumbles means to make a continuous deep, resonant sound and Rattles means to make or cause to make a rapid succession of short, sharp knocking sounds. So both are apt for this sentence as Train rumbles and train rattles both are correct.
