The ceremony commenced with prayers and welcome song sung by the school choir. Mrs. Nirmali Wickramasinghe, educationist & former Principal of Ladies College, Colombo, graced this momentous occasion as the chief guest. The theme of this event was “team spirit” which was highlight- ed in the Annual report read out by the Principal and this stood as testimony to the words of the school song “unity & loyalty” which is behind the success of the staff and students of the institution. Students, who proved their stance and potential in aca- demic excellence, once again stood by the school motto “Advancement in knowledge”. The stars of the evening were awarded for the academic excellence in the interme- diate & senior category to Maryam Mubeen & Maryam Wazil respectively. Nuha Rishafy, former head girl, received the award for leadership, dedicated service & loy- alty to the school. The installation ceremony of the train- ee prefects was another event which added grace to this occasion. The school also took pride in felicitating past pupils who have excelled in diverse disciplines offered by recog- nized institutions of Sri Lanka and abroad such as medi- cine, law, accountancy and psychology. Staff members who had rendered their dedicated service to the school were also felicitated at this occasion. The popular ‘Avurudu Pola,’ organised by the Old Girls’ Association of the Visakha Vidyalaya, Colombo, will take place once again this year on Saturday, April 2, at the school premises from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. This year, the ‘Avurudu Pola’ will feature numerous trade stalls with something of inter- est for every member of the family. There will be bargains and textiles, household linen, ready-made garments, handi- crafts, food items, books and accessories such as costume jewellery, handbags, shoes, etc. For the home, there will be bargains and foliage, ceramics and many more items. The Horror House, the Kiddies’ Corner and Games of Skill are included as amuse- ments for the whole family. The traditional ‘Avurudu Senakeli’ will also be an attrac- tion at the event.
