If we have a theme this Spring then it is The Edinburgh Fringe, from which we have drawn three top shows to bring to Ledbury. Ladykiller and In Loyal Company are two fantastic pieces of drama, both of which we have seen and highly recommend to you. That they both appeared in the top ten of the critics’ choices out of nearly 4000 shows in the 2018 Fringe says enough in itself. Do not miss them! And, we also have the King of the Fringe, the ubiquitous Mervyn Stutter, returning to The Market Theatre after too long an absence. Further drama highlights are the return of Ledbury favourites Hotbuckle Theatre Company with Jayne Eyre and The Pantaloons with their rendition of The Odyssey. If that is not enough, in March The Market Theatre is joining forces with Our Star Theatre Company to bring Lionel Bart’s Oliver! to our stage.

A wide variety of music with Red Hot Boogie’s 50s and 60s Night, The Brubeck Project, The Blackheart Orchestra and Worcester G&S performing Trial by Jury add musical flavour to the programme. And just for our younger audience Garlic Theatre from Norfolk bring us Three Little Pig Tails.

Finally we have a superb programme of screenings from The Royal Ballet, The Royal Opera, The National Theatre and the Royal Shakespeare Company; and a brilliant array of films (which, if you join our Film Club, you can watch for half price - See below!).

iNformatioNBuy Tickets See front cover for details of how to book. Tickets may also be bought on the door, subject to availability. The Theatre or Foyer may be hired by emailing [email protected]

Wed 30 Jan I 6.45pm I £15*

Verdi based La Traviata on Alexandre Dumas fils’ novel and play La Dame aux Camélias, inspired by the life and death of the real Parisian courtesan Marie Duplessis. Verdi offered a more complex and sympathetic portrayal of his heroine than Dumas, highlighting Violetta’s noble nature and her devotion to Alfredo. Initially La Traviata had a lukewarm reception, but after Verdi revised the work in 1854 it became enormously successful. It is currently the most performed opera in the world, and the role of Violetta is a favourite of many star sopranos.

Richard II, King of England, is irresponsible, foolish and vain. His weak leadership sends his kingdom into disarray and his court into uproar. Simon Russell Beale returns to National Theatre Live screens following broadcasts of Timon of Athens and King Lear, and his recent role in the National Theatre’s critically acclaimed production of The Lehman Trilogy.

This visceral new production about the limits of power is directed by Joe Hill-Gibbins, whose previous plays include Little Revolution at the Almeida and Absolute Hell at the National Theatre.

doN QuixoteLive Screening from The Royal Ballet

Tues 19 Feb I 7.15pm I £15*

Don Quixote and his servant Sancho Panza set out to have a chivalrous adventure. They meet Kitri and Basilio, a young couple who cannot marry because Kitri’s father is determined to marry her off to the wealthy Gamache. Don Quixote decides to intervene.

With Don Quixote’s help, Kitri and Basilio convince her father to let them marry. Don Quixote also persuades Gamache that he would prefer to marry the barmaid anyway. Kitri and Basilio celebrate, and everyone cheers Don Quixote on his way.

Don Quixote is one of Marius Petipa’s much-loved 19th-century classics - its story is drawn from Miguel de Cervantes’ classic novel and set to Ludwig Minkus’ score. The ballet has long been acclaimed for its virtuoso dancing, beautiful and technically demanding ‘vision scene’ and the famously bravura and breath-taking Act III pas de deux.

For many people, the sound of Dave Brubeck’s Take 5 is the sound of jazz. This popular American pianist and composer who died just a few years ago did more than perhaps anyone to bring jazz into the popular mainstream. Now Totnes based musician Neil Maya has put together a group of some of the finest musicians in the South West to authentically reproduce the best known Dave Brubeck recordings such as It’s a Raggy Waltz, Blue Rondo a la Turk, Unsquare Dance and of course Take 5. The band has recently performed numerous sell-out shows including appearances at the Teignmouth Jazz Festival, and many shows throughout the South West of England.

Sat 9 March I 8pm I £14*Out of nearly 4000 shows at the 2018 Edinburgh Fringe this one came in the Top Ten!! So an absolute “must see”.

A blood-soaked morality tale about victimhood, zero-hours contracts and tearing up the gender rule book on psychopathy.

A chambermaid, a hotel room and a dead woman. It’s not what it looks like, really, it’s not. It was self-defence… and anyway the woman was asking for it. The chambermaid considers herself to be a pretty normal person; she reads books. She pretended to read the party manifestos at the General Election. She’s even read The Psychopath Test and she’s pretty sure she’s not one so...

La forza deL destiNo Live from The Royal Opera House

Tues 2 April I 6.15pm I £15*

One of Verdi’s most ambitious scores. Its overture - which introduces us to the sinister motif signifying Fate - is one of his most memorable. There is comedy too with the scenes containing the greedy monk Fra Melitone. Christof Loy’s colourful and spectacular production reflects the kaleidoscopic nature of Verdi’s opera, where intense personal dramas play out against a background of war, and in which religion plays an ambiguous role.

The Marquis of Calatrava forbids his daughter Leonora to marry the South American nobleman Don Alvaro. The lovers attempt to elope, but the Marquis catches them. In the ensuing altercation, Alvaro accidentally kills the Marquis, who curses his daughter as he dies. Leonora’s brother Don Carlo di Vargas decides to find them and avenge his father. He joins the Spanish army under a false name, little knowing that Don Alvaro has done the same thing. The men become close friends while fighting in Italy, but that friendship turns to enmity when Don Carlo discovers Leonora’s portrait among Alvaro’s possessions.

faust Live from The Royal Opera House

Tues 30 April I 6.45pm I £15*

Gounod’s Faust (1859) was one of the world’s most popular operas from the 1860s to World War II, and remains a core repertory work. The story, adapted by Gounod’s librettists Jules Barbier and Michel Carré from Carré’s play Faust et Marguerite, is based on Part I of Goethe’s epic poem Faust, which was a major inspiration for many composers during the 19th century and beyond. Gounod added a ballet to Act V when Faust received its first Paris Opéra staging in 1869.

Disillusioned with life, the aged philosopher Faust calls upon Satan to help him. The devil Méphistophélès appears and strikes a bargain with the philosopher: he will give him youth and the love of the beautiful Marguerite, if Faust will hand over his soul. Faust agrees, and Méphistophélès arranges matters so that Marguerite loses interest in her suitor Siébel and becomes infatuated with Faust.

Faust initially seems to love Marguerite in return, but soon abandons her. Her brother Valentin returns from the war and is furious to find his sister pregnant. Will Faust repent his destructive actions, and can his soul, and Marguerite’s, be saved?

Do you think, because I am poor, obscure, plain, and little, I am soulless and heartless? You think wrong! - I have as much soul as you - and full as much heart!

Hotbuckle bring their inventiveness, humour and unique magic to Brontë’s compelling tale, as the young, orphaned Jane meets with cruelty at the hands of her aunt and then at the school to which she is banished. She eventually finds her freedom and becomes governess to the daughter of the enigmatic Mr Rochester at Thornfield Hall. As Jane and Rochester’s relationship grows, it is overshadowed by doubt, dark shadows and terrible secrets and she must choose between passion and reason.

a Nice diLemmaaNd triaL by juryPresented by Worcester Gilbert and Sullivan Society

Tues 21 - Wed 22 May 7.30pm I £12*

For many years, audiences have enjoyed the wonderful collaborations of Gilbert and Sullivan. The Worcester Gilbert and Sullivan Society has great pleasure presenting Trial by Jury, the humorous operetta which concerns a “breach of promise of marriage” lawsuit, with the judge and legal system being the objects of light-hearted satire.

However the evening’s entertainment is further enhanced by the prequel to Trial by Jury. The usher arrives at court to discover there is no jury. He is distraught and appeals for help. Very cleverly, well known characters (some of whom are rather dubious) arrive. They tell their stories and offer their services until the jury is complete...

For fans of Gilbert and Sullivan and for people who have yet to be introduced to their works, this production will prove entertaining and enjoyable.

Winner of the Palme d’Or at Cannes 2018, Hirokazu Kore-eda’s (After Life; Still Walking; Like Father, Like Son) Shoplifters is a complex and exceptional drama about the forces holding a struggling family together. In Tokyo, the poverty stricken Shibatas family routinely turns to petty thieving to make ends meet. After one of their shoplifting sessions, father Osamu (Lily Franky) and son Shota (Kairi

Jyo) happen upon a little girl (Miyu Sasaki) and take her in. A rare depiction of Japanese society’s urban underclass, Shoplifters is an incredibly satisfying, and exquisitely drawn film.

Shadi (Saleh Bakri) returns to Nazareth’s Arab community to honour his traditions and personally invite guests to his sister’s wedding. Driving round the city with his father (Mohammad Bakri), tensions between them grow; with Jacir exploring what it means to be a Palestinian living abroad versus a Palestinian at home (in an Israeli city). Full of wry, perceptive

humour, Wajib is a lively, bittersweet tale and provides a snapshot of modern-day Nazareth. Directed by Palestinian filmmaker Annemarie Jacir (Salt of this Sea, When I Saw You).

A surprisingly satisfying remake that succeeds because Lady Gaga can certainly act and Bradley Cooper, who also directs, can sing: plus there’s genuine chemistry between them. Ageing alcoholic Country music star Jackson Maine (Cooper) discovers - and falls in love with - struggling artist Ally (Gaga). But even as Ally’s career takes off, their relationship is breaking down, as Jack battles his demons. The end result

is engaging, entertaining, and heart breaking. Emotional manipulation that works even if you’re not normally a sucker for this type of thing!

Richard Eyre’s faithful adaptation of Ian McEwan’s novel, where Fiona Maye (Emma Thompson) is an eminent High Court judge. As her marriage crumbles, she must decide a case involving Adam, a teenager who as a Jehovah’s Witness is refusing a blood transfusion. Adam is three months from his 18th birthday and still legally a child. Should Fiona force him to live? It’s always rewarding to watch the ever-reliable

Thompson bring her lucid wit and deep emotional reserves to bear on a meaty role. Her towering performance as a woman in despair packs a real punch.

Christine “Lady Bird” MacPherson is a high school senior from the “wrong side of the tracks”. She longs for adventure, sophistication, and opportunity, but finds none of that in her Sacramento Catholic high school. Lady Bird follows the title character’s senior year in high school, including her first romance, her participation in the school play, and most importantly, her applying for college.

During World War I the women of the Paridier family farm, under the deft hand of Hortense, the family’s matriarch (Nathalie Baye), must grapple with the workload while the men, including two sons, are off at the front. Hortense reluctantly brings in an outsider, the orphan Francine (Iris Bry), to help her daughter Solange (Laura Smet). Acclaimed filmmaker Xavier Beauvois (Of Gods and Men) revels in the mysteries and beauties

of the French countryside, here unravaged by war, with painterly images bathed in natural light, yet keeps his focus on this intricate drama as it plays out.

A foot-stomping celebration of Queen, and the flamboyant Freddie Mercury (Rami Malek) who shattered convention to become one of our most beloved stars. Tracing Queen’s meteoric rise through their iconic songs, their near implosion as Mercury’s lifestyle spirals out of control, and their triumphant reunion on the eve of Live Aid. An object example of how a film can be entertaining, even exhilarating, without being particularly good, this has the driving energy of a stadium anthem and is an unadulterated joy for all Freddie’s fans. Director Bryan Singer.
