Welcome to our Spring Season Programme!

2017 is going to be a big year for the Theatre. In February all the seats will be reupholstered and in March we are having a new mezzanine floor put in backstage to create a dedicated rehearsal space that will relieve pressure on the use of the stage. Several Trusts have helped us find the money for the rehearsal room, but we still need to raise quite a bit for the seat refurbishment. If you would be willing to chip in £50, a seat will bear your inscription (see page 11).

We are also moving to reserved seating for all films; and for just £20 you can join the Film Club and be able to see any film (we show about 30 a year) for half price (see page 18) – tremendous value!

And so to the programme. We welcome the return of four really popular theatre companies, Vamos, probably the best mask theatre company in Britain, with The Best Thing; the extremely funny Pantaloons with their take on Pride and Prejudice; returning for the fourth time Hotbuckle with Far from the Madding Croud; and Open Sky with their big hit from the Edinburgh Fringe, Scorched. We also have some great music from Red Hot Boogie, Sonrisa, and Sofia Buckingham; and the biggest programme yet of live screenings from the National Theatre, the RSC and the ROH.

The Market Theatre - is situated in Market Street (off Bye Street). The Market Theatre, is a trading name of Ledbury Amateur Dramatic Society (LADS) who own and run the Theatre for the benefit of the community. It provides a dedicated venue for amateur and professional performing arts. It has 128 seats, foyer, bar, wheelchair access, disabled toilet and a hearing loop. The Theatre or Foyer may be hired by phoning 01531 633760.

Ledbury Film Club Showings - For just £20pa you will be able to get in for half price to every one of the 30 or so films that we show each year. All you need to do is to either pay on line via the theatre’s website (www.themarkettheatre.com), or by send a cheque (payable to “LADS”) to Ledbury Film Club, 2 Church House, Church Lane, Ledbury HR8 2DP. Of course if you do not want to join the Film Club, you can book in the normal way (see front cover) or buy tickets on the door (subject to availability).LADS Youth Theatre Company - We are afraid that membership is currently full.

Ledbury Allotment Association invites you to an illustrated talk by Charles on the theory and practice of no dig gardening. It’s a method he has used for over thirty years to grow vegetables that are often ready earlier and are easier to grow than those grown on traditionally dug or rotavated soil. There is less ground preparation, less mud sticking to boots and less weeding!

Charles’s quarter acre of intensive vegetable beds at his Somerset home crops more than £20,000 of salad and vegetables annually, which he sells locally. He has written eight books, which will be on sale during the evening, including his new Vegetable Garden Diary which has advice for every week of the year. Charles is a passionate and accomplished gardener who grows vegetables of amazing flavour - Raymond Blanc

One of the most popular Rock ‘n Roll bands in the area Red Hot Boogie have long been delighting audiences with their up-tempo versions of 50s and 60s hits from Carl Perkins, Chuck Berry, Little Richard, Jerry Lee Lewis, Elvis, and many more. An evening not to be missed!

The Pantaloons are back after last year’s side-splitting triumph with The Importance of Being Earnest. It is a truth universally acknowledged that Jane Austen's witty and romantic masterpiece is one of the best-loved stories of all time, dealing with the most important questions in life... Will Mrs Bennet manage to offload her numerous daughters in record time? Will Lizzy and Darcy actually get together? Will creepy Mr Collins just go away please? The literary classic gets the full Pantaloons treatment in this beautifully hilarious and delightfully innovative new adaptation. "Glorious... A cleverly adapted, joyous comic makeover of the treasured story." * * * * (The Stage); “There is genuine delight at the comic inventiveness of this show… this is a hilarious take on a much loved novel.” (Bath Chronicle)

Ted Hughes called the poet Edward Thomas 'father of us all' and he continues to inspire many of our great writers today. Join a celebration of Edward Thomas's poetry and prose, hosted by the Friends of the Dymock Poets. This lively programme will commemorate the centenary of Thomas's death in the First World War, and will include a potted history of his writing, readings of his greatest and best-loved poems, and reflections on his observations of countryside, nature, language and the emotions. For those familiar with his work and his connections with the Ledbury area, there will be guest speakers on some lesser-known aspects of Thomas's work. For those new to the Friends of the Dymock Poets this offers the chance to find out more in a relaxed and friendly environment.

The songs that Sofia writes come from deep inside and speak of emotions, raw and real. She delivers every word with a passion that is both inclusive and electrifying.

After years of writing songs, Sofia spent time in the studio this past summer crafting them into an inspired new album. This collaboration, created with a group of international musicians, producers and engineers will be released in March 2017. The album showcases Sofia’s work from solo guitar and vocal through to full-band rock.

The concert at The Market Theatre will include music from the album; and Sofia will be joined by her producer, Andy Brotherton, who will accompany her on second guitar.

Catch Sofia early in her career in the wonderfully intimate setting that is Ledbury’s Market Theatre.

Edward Thomas was killed in France at the Battle of Arras on April 9th 1917 and so 2017 will be the centenary of his death. Nick Dear’s play, The Dark Earth and the Light Sky, is a moving evocation of the years leading up to Thomas’s death, his friendship with Robert Frost, his marriage to Helen and the mutual affection of Edward Thomas and Eleanor Farjeon. The close association of the Dymock Poets makes it particularly appropriate for the Market Theatre to mark this anniversary.

Brilliantly received at Edinburgh Fringe 2016, using new writing inspired by writer Lisle Turner’s grandfather, visual physical theatre, period music and an innovative set to create the workings of a mind sinking into the sands of time.

1941. Egypt. WWII. An escaped German officer. A two day chase across the brutal Sahara. A triumphant capture. A hero’s return.

1991. England. Jack reigns from the armchair of his rest home, a local legend. Decorated veteran of Tobruk. Former river warden, boxer, horse whisperer, boat builder, charmer, prolific father and husband to a very unhappy wife. As the Gulf War rages, the past drags him back to the scorched sands.

In their new show, storyteller Malcolm Green and musician Joshua Green follow the trail of the Cuckoo to explore the fascinating world of this extraordinary creature through stories, music and song. It’s shortly after dawn at RAF Fylingdales on the North York Moors and a male Cuckoo is having a tiny 4.5g radio transmitter strapped to his back. A few weeks later he will have flown thousands of miles south and 5km up over the Sahara Desert, sending signals back to England as he travels through Libya and Chad to the Congo. For thousands of years the Cuckoo has been part of folklore and its call present in songs, poems and stories. But now this bird is disappearing in England and we may soon stop hearing that iconic ‘cuck-coo’.

THE SLEEPING BEAUTY

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart arrives in Vienna, the music capital of the world – and he’s determined to make a splash. Awestruck by his genius, court composer Antonio Salieri has the power to promote his talent or destroy his name. Seized by obsessive jealousy he begins a war with Mozart, with music, and ultimately, with God.

Multiple Olivier and Tony Award winner when premiered at the National in 1979, the play became an Academy Award-winning film. With live orchestral accompaniment by Southbank Sinfonia.

The Sleeping Beauty combines the best of classical ballet, with all its charms and virtuosity, splendid music and talented dancers. TWELFTH NIGHT

Ravishing music and a heartbreaking story of a loving geisha deserted by a callous American husband. Much-loved soprano Ermonela Jaho sings the title role for the first time at Covent Garden. The exotic imagery of the Nagasaki setting is drawn from 19th-century Western artists' romanticised views of Japan. Puccini's music brings alive the birdsong of the morning, the ritual of a wedding and the seduction by naval officer B.F. Pinkerton (sung by exciting young tenor Marcelo Puente) of his young, innocent bride.

George Balanchine’s evocation of the sparkle of emeralds, rubies and diamonds is a brilliant ballet classic. The French Romantic music of Fauré provides the impetus for the subtlety and lyricism of ‘Emeralds’, while the fire of ‘Rubies’ comes from Stravinsky and the jazz-age energy of New York.

Grandeur and elegance complete the ballet with the splendour of Imperial Russia and the peerless music of Tchaikovsky in ‘Diamonds’.

The Rome season in the Royal Shakespeare Theatre opens with the politics of spin and betrayal turning to violence. Following his sell-out productions of Tom Morton-Smith’s Oppenheimer (2014) and James Fenton’s adaptation of Don Quixote (2016), Season Director Angus Jackson steers the thrilling action.
