AUTUMN

It is a sparkling season we have for you at The Market Theatre – taking us through to Christmas and beyond. The programme of Live Screenings that has proved to be so popular takes in not only The Royal Ballet and The Royal Opera, but in November we are also proud to present the first ever screening from The Royal Shakespeare Company, with David Tennant portraying Richard II. Tickets are selling fast – so get yours quickly!

We also have some class musical acts with return visits from The Budapest Cafe Orchestra, The New Rope String Band, Clive John, and Dave Cartwright complemented by Market Theatre first timers Dr Teeth Big Band and The Remi Harris Gypsy Jazz Project.

But we also have an international flavour with The Osiligi Maasai Warriors and a Nordic fairytale portrayed by The Fetch Puppet Theatre, both superb family shows. And don’t miss the all singing all dancing (literally!) LADS production of Girls’ Night. Then, with a seasonal twist, we will be kept on the edge of our seats by Gothic Tales from actress Rebecca Vaughan, and enjoy Christmas music from The Ledbury Community Choir.

And last, but by no means least, don’t forget to buy your tickets (on sale now) for January’s Traditional Panto from LADS, which this year will be The Sleeping Beauty (see the advertisement in the back of the brochure).

THE MARKET THEATRE LEDBURY

Over the past 12 months poet Philip Wells and artists from The Rural Media Company worked with the people of Ledbury to create Life Loves to Change; a major new poem and digital artwork that explores the changing culture and identity of a rural market town in the 21st century. The result was 32 new sonnets and films that beautifully capture the spirit of Ledbury and its people.

This event was a sell out and huge success back in July. Don’t miss this chance to hear the entire poem and watch the film, but this time with the recorded voices of Ledbury people. We will also be premiering the film of this year’s Ox Roast Festival.

Once seen, never forgotten: combining superb musicianship with side-splitting comic genius, the New Rope String Band are truly unique entertainers. Elements of circus, clowning, vaudeville, slapstick and sheer inspired silliness are spliced with beautiful acoustic music from various world traditions, in precision-honed yet uproarious performances that have delighted audiences from Borneo’s Sarawak rainforest to the Shetland Folk Festival. Equally at home in tiny village halls or on major festival stages, these maniac minstrels are now touring again as a three-piece, mixing up long time favourite routines with ever-evolving new material. From musical tennis to deconstructed nursery rhymes, Python-esque absurdism to pyrotechnics and live interactive film, expect the hilariously unexpected.

Dave and John make a welcome return to Ledbury to celebrate their 130th joint Birthdays!! Dave is the complete entertainer. He has written over 1000 songs and released five albums and four CDs during his 40 years of worldwide live performances and TV appearances. His warm voice, acoustic guitar and tunefully inventive harmonica act as a wonderful backdrop to his songs and humour. Dave is joined with good friend singer-songwriter John Montague, himself a Nashville recording artiste, producer, songwriter and Stamford Guitar Festival Organiser. John sings great songs and adds beautiful accompaniment, vocals – and oh yes, a few awful jokes! These two musicians just sit down sing, perform and entertain while enjoying themselves. Why not come and join them in this warm and friendly Birthday Celebration.

A night for the girls. But with plenty for the discerning male companion to admire and enjoy! The emotive and witty script speaks to all who spent their teens dancing around their handbags. The cast is five school friends some 30 years on. What a bunch of party animals they are: all recognisable caricatures of outrageous femininity. The girls replay their lives in flashbacks, in-between giving stirring song and dance renditions of seventies/eighties favourites. Highlights include It’s Raining Men, I Will Survive, Young Hearts Run Free, and We Are Family - sure fire hit songs which are sure to get the audience on their feet and rocking in the aisles. It’s not a family show but a feel good hit if ever there was one.

Directed by Guy Masterson (Animal Farm/Under Milk Wood)

The Victorian fascination with tales of mystery and the supernatural created an enduring legacy of Gothic fiction; but it is the male writers that we remember. Many thrilling and eerie stories from the great female writers have gathered dust and been forgotten. Until now.....! An artist, gripped by the clutching fingers of a dead past; a scientist, defying nature in the dark realm of the senses; an expectant father, driven mad by creeping shadows… In this month that is traditional for ghostly storytelling and in the unquiet, stygian darkness between life and death, a lone, haunted woman tells chilling tales of the macabre and terrifying, illuminating the curious frailties of human nature. Rebecca Vaughan’s performance is a near perfect piece of theatre The Scotsman; Wonderfully eerie. British Theatre Guide

Hitchcock and his wife, Alma, are at the top of their creative game. To recapture his youth's artistic daring, Alfred decides his next film will adapt the lurid horror novel, Psycho. Unfortunately, as Alfred works on this film, Alma finally loses patience with his roving eye and controlling habits with his actresses. Anthony Hopkins as Hitchcock and Helen Mirren as Alma are alone worth the price of a ticket. Lovely to watch two great actors at work together and a fascinating glimpse of the days of classic Hollywood..

20th November

Hitchcock

A modern interpretation but one that doesn't forget its themes and morals from the classic F. Scott Fitzgerald tale. Australian Director Luhrmann's flair adds a new dimension to the story. Visually this film is stunning: from grand sets, to the detailed period dresses, to its impressive scenery, it takes your breath away. The direction is impeccable and a new soundtrack complements the era in which it is set. The cinematography is also marvellous and really lets the viewer absorb the sheer artistry that has gone into the film’s making.

All a bit of a silly story really, but great fun and a super sound track from Cliff and the Shads.
