Dear Students, Parents and Caregivers

With the closing of the Term once again upon us it is timely to take this opportunity on behalf of the sports department to wish all our families a safe and enjoyable break. In the first newsletter of the year we quoted the schools sporting motto”NA TE HAKINAKINA KIA KOTAHI AI TE WHANAU”, UNITING FAMILIES THROUGH SPORT. It is this partnership and the vital link with families we feel helps contribute most to success in sport. We are especially grateful with the culture of support which has permeated throughout this Term and look forward to this continued partnership throughout the remainder of the year. It is this contribution and community mindedness in and from individuals giving back to sport that is the foundation to our success.

Looking back through the previous newsletters of this Term we can reflect on many successes and great levels of participation from our students. Most notably the individual success of our Year 7 Boys Touch Team on their win in the PB/B.O.P competition and the NZ CUP Cricket Team on once again being crowned B.O.P champions. We have also found the first of our school champions in Swimming, Squash and Badminton. In addition to these many of our students have achieved through sporting endeavours and codes outside of the school.

Finally this week we farewelled Mr Brett Hampton on leave for Term Two and Three. Brett returns to Holland to continue his cricketing career. After scoring a large number of runs this season, Brett was a key contributor in the Bay of Plenty Cricket Team winning the Brian Dunning, Fergus Hickey Trophies and provincial cricket’s greatest prize the Hawke Cup. Her final result was fourth but she also took out the gutsiest surfer of the contest award for paddling her foam board out the back in a four foot groundswell and her great competitive attitude when surfing against the top 3

NZ CUP BOYS CRICKETOur last match of this end of the season was against Aquinas College who won the toss and put us into bat first. We were off to a shaky start losing a few wickets, but this was steadied by Marcel Collett Rm 19 who ended up scoring 48 runs. With the help of some big hitting by Rhys Mischewski Rm 19, Beicjh Winter Rm 19 and Alex Smith Rm 37, we got through to 127/7 after the 20 overs.

Aquinas college got off to the best possible start, being 57/0 after 10 overs. Scott Ellerington Rm 20 picked up a vital breakthrough, slowing the Aquinas run rate. Aquinas needed 10 runs off the last over. With two no balls and a wide, Aquinas needed 3 off the last ball and they got a two but getting run out whilst coming back for the third. This left the game in a tie. We ended up winning the game because they had more wickets in hand at the end of their 20 overs.

We are now the BOP Champs and take a break over the winter terms and play St Peters in Cambridge the first week in Term 4 who are the Waikato/Valley Champs.

FUTURE CHAMPIONSFuture Champions was held on Friday 5th April. This is a programme aimed to help develop young kids sporting skills from schools all over the Bay and, as the name suggests, help them become ‘Future Champions’.  This was a one day event held at Blake Park, with 12 different sports.

I did football, and it was a rewarding day where expert coaches shared their skills with us. As well as being taught new skills and drills, an informative nutrition session was included.

Did you know that a bag of chips has an unhealthy amount of fat, whereas rice crackers have virtually zero! Maybe its time for all those dedicated athletes to start swapping those chips for some nutritious rice crackers!

Another highlight of the day was when Natalie Peat, surf lifesaver and three time world record holder told us about her journey to success. She also shared a few quotes with us that mean a lot to her. One of them has really stuck with me. “Victory has defeated you”. This is what Bane says to Batman in ‘The Dark Knight Rises’. Meaning, if you are on top, then to not just sit back and be proud of what you have achieved so far. Keep going, strive for more, and NEVER let victory defeat you.
