European University Sports NEWSLETTER 01-2009 EUSA EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE MEETING EUSA Executive Committee met on March 13, 2009 in Hamburg (GER) on its first meeting in 2009. The meeting was hosted by the German University Sports Federation (ADH) and the City of Hamburg, which will from May 18-24,2009 host also the Europe- an Universities Volleyball Cham- pionship and the EUSA Judo Cup. The day after the meeting the EUSA Rules and Regulation Commission and Student Com- mission met on working sessions. The following important decisions were taken on the meeting: EUC SAILING 2009 EUC Sailing planned to be organised in Zadar (CRO) was cancelled due to withdrawal of the host. EUSA Sailing events will be in the future organised as EUSA Cups or Trophies. EUC TAEKWONDO 2009 Based on the results of the EUSA Cup organised in De- cember 2008 in Moscow and the received candidature of FADU, the EUSA EC decided to put Taekwondo on the EUC Program and to attribute the organisation of the first EUC to the Portuguesse University Sports Federation (FADU). The 1 st EUC Taekwondo will be held in Braga (POR) from December 10-12, 2009. EUC TABLE TENNIS 2009 The venue and date of the EUC Table Tennis 2009 was changed. The event planned to be organised in Skopje (MKD) is cancelled. The new venue is Nis (SRB). The championship will be held from July 22-25, 2009. EUC BADMINTON 2010 The Executive Committee decided to attribute the EUC Badminton 2010 to the French University Sports Fed- eration. The event will be held from June 21-25, 2010 in Nancy (FRA). EUSA STUDENT COMMISSIONNEW STC MEMBERSEUSA Executive Committee nominated the following four students in the EUSA Student Commission for the period 2009-2011:

The newly elected members joined in the commission the following students that were nominated last year: Antonija Cerkez (CRO), Julien Buhajezuk (FRA), Rakaczki Zoltan (HUN), Kamilla Bagavieva (RUS).

EUSA SYMPOSIUMOn of the main tasks of the Student Commission is also help in organisa-tion of the EUSA Symposium. This year the 6th EUSA Symposium will be organised from October 15-18, 2009 in Zadar (CRO). The 6th EUSA Symposium will be organised from Octo-ber 15-18, 2009 in Zadar (CRO). The EUSA Symposium is an opportunity to meet new people and explore new places, as well as opportunities, and also to exchange ex-periences. Zadar is the perfect place to connect the two aspects of students’ life – academic and sports life, work and goals. We hope that all participants will give their part in creating an encouraging atmosphere. For this reason, the Organising Committee has made an effort to accom-modate all participants, both stu-dents and officials, into a 4-star all-inclusive hotel placed directly by the beach. STC MEETINGThe EUSA Student Commission met from March 13-15, 2009 in Hamburg (GER) on its first meeting to se-lect the students for the EUC 2009 Volunteer Program. EUSA has received 69 applications from all over Europe this year. 30 students were chosen to take part in EUSA cham-pionships as volun-teers.

SLOVENIAThe annual General Assem-bly of the Slovenian Univer-sity Sports Association was held in Ljubljana on Febru-ary 4, 2009. The Assembly approved the annual ac-counts and the activity plan and elected new Executive Committee for the period of next 4-years (2009-2013). Prof. dr. Otmar Kugovnik was re-elected as the President, while Bozidar Pučnik, prof. dr. Rado Pisot and Matjaž Pečovnik were elected as the SUSA Vice-Presidents.

The biggest challenge of SUSA in the next period is the organisation of 2013 Winter Universiade, that will be held in Maribor. SUSA will also organise the EUC Handball in 2009 and EUC Golf in 2010. More details on SUSA can be found on the official website: www.susa.org

NEWS FROM MEMBER FEDERATIONSFINLAND

The Finnish Student Sports Federation (OLL) celebrated its 85-years anniversary with a gala event held in Helsinki on January 31, 2009. Over 100 guest, who were present on the cele-bration, were welcomed by Mr. Jussi Sallinen, the OLL President.

Present on the celebration was also Matjaž Pečovnik, EUSA Secretary General, who congratulated the OLL on its anniversary and thanked the federation for its contribution to the devel-opment of the European and International university sports movement.

OLL also awarded the Finnish Student Athlete of the Year 2008. The award was given to 27 years old Bodil Holm-ström, who won 3 gold medals on WUC Orienteering 2008. Along her sport career, Bodil has well taken care of her academic work, graduating last year as a teacher of mathematics and chemistry.

BELGIUMElections that were organized by the Bel-gian University Sports Federation (BUSF) resulted in a new Executive Committee. On a national level the Federation decided to integrate the ongoing federalization of the country: Each two years the chairmanship will be attribut-ed, without elections, to the chairman of one of the two Re-gional Federations: the Dutch speaking ‘Flemish Student Sport Federation’ (VSSF) and the French speaking ‘Sports Association for Universities and Colleges’ (ASEUS).

As a result of this decision the chairman of the VSSF, Mr. Jan Bonnarens, was nominated as the chairman. On the international level, the Federation decided to appoint one sole representative: Mr. Peter Verboven, Director of Sports of the University of Antwerp, was nominated as the BUSF International Officer.

The General Assembly of the Russian Students Sport Union was held in Moscow, at the Rus-sian State University of Physical Education, Sport and Tourism. Dur-ing the RSSU General Assembly, the new Ex-ecutive Board was elect-ed. Mr. Oleg Matytsin was re-elected for the position of the RSSU President for the term 2009-2012. Mr. Matytsin is also the EUSA Vice-President and FISU Assessor.

2015 UNIVERSIADES CANDIDATES On March 15, 2009, the Bidding Commit-tees for the 2015 Universiades delivered their Bidding Books at the FISU Head-quarters in Brussels, Belgium. Present were Edmonton (CAN), Gwangju (KOR) and Taipei City (TPE), Bidding Cities for the 2015 Summer Universiade and Granada (ESP), Bid-ding City for the 2015 Winter Universiade. For the first time in the FISU history, a special ceremony was organ-ized and all of the Bidding Candidates delivered their books at the same time. The delegates were welcomed by the FISU 1st Vice-President Mr. Claude-Louis Gallien and the Secretary-General Mr. Eric Saintrond together with Stefan Bergh, the Chair of the Evaluation Commit-tee for the 2015 SU Candidates and Leonz Eder, Chair of the Evaluation Committee for the 2015 WU Candi-dates. In April and May the Evaluation Committees will visit the candidate cities to make an extensive report for the FISU Executive Committee which will attribute the 2015 Games on May 23, 2009 in Brussels. WINTER UNIVERSIADE HARBIN 2009

With a dazzling show of light, costumes, dances and music and the incredible performances of acrobatic figure skaters the 2009 Winter Universiade came to the end on February 28, 2009. The FISU flag was given to the next host of the Winter Universiade, Erzurum, Turkey, which will host the games in 2011. ‘The quality of the organisation and the operation of the venues encouraged the participation of world top ranked athletes and helped to increase the performance of our athletes reinforcing the establishment of the Universiade as a key sporting event in the international sports calendar. The importance taken by this event had amongst other things generated the highest live TV coverage ever for a Winter Universiade’ said the FISU President Killian in his closing speech. ‘I would also like to underline that the organizers put in place an amazing and very successful cultural program throughout the entire period of the event. The combination of the sport and cultural program during this 24th Universiade contributed to conveying in the best possible way FISU’s aims and goals’, Mr. Killian continued. Many of the EUSA member Federations were present in China. The most successful among them was Russia with 18 gold, 14 silver and 19 bronze medals, followed by Switzerland (7 gold, 3 silver and 4 bronze) and Austria (4 gold, 3 silver and 2 bronze medals). HEADS OF DELEGATIONS MEETING IN BELGRADEThe Organizing Committee of the 2009 Summer Univer-siade hosted the Heads of Delegation meeting which took in Belgrade from March 19-21, 2009. The Universi-ade in Belgrade will be organised from July 1-12, 2009. The delegations meeting gave the answers to all the open questions regarding the games. Speed Skating Records were broken whereas 2, 366 participants from 44 countries took part in the games.
