Fantastic Phonic Books for Older Readers

Welcome to the catch-up range of Phonic Books

These phonic books specialize in synthetic phonic reading books for catch-up readers. These students, for various reasons, have fallen behind their peers and are finding reading challenging. Many catch-up readers have experienced loss of confidence and low self-esteem. A range of catch-up reading books include the Moon Dog, Magic Belt, Alba, Totem & Talisman Series.

These books have been designed by experienced Special Needs and Dyslexia trained teachers. They take into account and address the following issues:

1. Many children fail to read fluently because they have poor phonic knowledge and skills. The phonicstep-by-step progression of these books aims to fill the missing phonic gap.

2. Older, challenged pupils need books that are age appropriate in story and illustrations. Thestories and illustrations of this range of books are designed to be engaging and appeal to theolder reader.

3. Many children need to practice their phonic skills before they can develop their reading fluency.The accompanying workbooks and reading practice page offer this essential practice.

4. Children need to be taught to chunk words with more than one syllable to be able to decode awide range of words in English. Multi-syllable words are chunked at the bottom of each page ofthe reading books.

5. Many struggling readers have limited vocabulary. These books and workbooks introduce newvocabulary within the context of a meaningful text.

6. Reading (decoding) and spelling should be taught hand in hand. The workbooks include spellingactivities at every stage, including words with one or more syllables.

The Moon Dog Series is designed to appeal to older ‘catch-up’ pupils at the very early stages of reading. The series offers two sets of books, each set containing eight books. Set 1 introduces sounds gradually and reinforces reading these in CVC words. All words are at CVC level with one line of text to the page. Set 2 begins with text at CVC level and continues through the digraphs ch, sh, th, ck, ng, qu and wh. The series is designed around a group of teenage friends who are in a band and offers short, humorous stories about their lives. Reading skills are developed through step-by-step progression which allows practice and consolidation at each level.The series and accompanying workbooks complement any synthetic phonics teaching programme.
