    About the hard disk driveTe hard disk drive is easily damaged by shockand vibration, so be sure to observe the ollowingprecautions. See page 121 or details.Do not subject the unit to strong shocks.Do not move the unit while the power cord is

    connected to the wall outlet.Do not use the unit in a location subject to vibrations

    or in an unstable location.Do not move the unit or disconnect the power cord

    while the unit is recording or playing.Do not attempt to replace or upgrade the hard diskdrive by yoursel, as this may result in a malunction.

    Any data that is lost due to a malunction in the harddisk drive cannot be recovered.

    Data recorded to the hard disk drive may be damagedduring ordinary operations. Make sure to use theunits backup unction to back up the data regularly toan optional USB hard disk or a shared older on yourcomputer.Sony cannot provide compensation or any destruction

    o data caused by a damaged hard disk drive.

    On recording

    Make a trial recording beore making the actualrecording, especially when recording importantmaterial.

    Sony cannot provide compensation or any ailure inrecording caused by a malunction in this unit.

    Tis section describes the main items that appear in each display.

    Press repeatedly to select the lefmost directory icon, and then pressBACK. Or, i no operation is made or 60 seconds, the unit automaticallyreturns to the main display.

    How to operate each menu

    Connecting the speakers and antennas

    Make sure the metal leads (not the part covered withvinyl insulation) are securely inserted into the speakerterminals.Insert the end o the cord marked with a red line intothe + terminal and the cord with no marking into the terminal.

    NETWORK portUse to connect the unit to a network. For details on networkconnections, see page 79.

    USB portUse to connect a USB storage device, another portabledevice, or the supplied wireless adaptor with the USBextension cable.

    MONITOR OUT (NTSC) jackUse to connect a V. See page 22 or details.

    FM wire antennaUse a commercially available 75 coaxial cable to connect the unit toan external antenna.

    External antenna

    DAB wire antenna (UK model only)With a DAB external antenna, you can obtain a higher DAB

    broadcast sound quality. It is recommended that you use thesupplied DAB wire antenna or only temporarily until youinstall a DAB external antenna (optional).75 coaxial cable with F male type connector will be neededto install the DAB external antenna (optional).

    Power cord

    WARNINGConnect the power cord to a wall outlet afer all other connectionshave been made.Te unit turns on automatically and starts making the initial settings.Wait until the unit turns off again.Te initial settings may take a ew minutes depending on the unitscondition.Do not disconnect the power cord while the initial setup is in progress.Doing so may cause the unit to malunction.

    Speaker cordsMake sure the speaker cords are correctly matched with theprojections on the SPEAKER terminals, and then insert the cordsfirmly into the SPEAKER terminals.Make sure to keep the speaker away rom the antennas as they mayproduce noise in the radio reception.

    AM loop antennaMake sure to keep the AM loop antenna awayrom the unit or other AV equipment as thismay produce noise in the radio reception.

    AUDIO IN jackUse to connect the external audio component (page 59).

    The illustration on this page uses the models except the UK model.

    Use to connect an optional audio component (suchas a cassette deck) through an audio connecting cord(optional). Analog sound input through this jack can beplayed or recorded on the unit.

    MONITOR OUT (NTSC) jack

    Use to connect a V or other device through anoptional video cable. A video signal is output throughthis jack or display on the connected device.

    To insert the batteries into theremote controlSlide and remove the battery compartment lid,and then insert the two supplied R6 (size AA)batteries (end first) matching the polarities as

    WARNING

    To turn off the powerPress the button on either the remote controlor the main unit. Te power may not turn offimmediately. I it does not, this indicates thatthe unit is analyzing the music data on the HDD(hard disk drive) (page 45). I you want to cancel

    the analysis and turn off the power immediately,press . I you want to turn the power back on,press the button.As long as the unit is active as a server and theclient device is playing audio data, the serverunction remains active and the power stays oneven i you press the button to turn the unitoff (the display turns off and the illuminationpanel slowly flashes). Press to cancel the serverunction and turn off the unit.

    Turning on the power

    TipTis unit has two starting modes; Quick start-up modeand Standard (power save) mode. See Setting thestandby mode on page 102 or details.

    About operation modesTis unit has our operation modes: normal,quick start-up standby, standard (power save)standby and automatic analysis.When the unit is set to quick start-up standbymode, the internal an will turn on every now and

    then even when the power is turned off. Tis isnormal and is not a malunction.

    Normal operation modehe unit enters this mode when it is turned on.

    Quick start-up standby modeIn standby mode, the system remains partiallyactive to quickly resume operations whenpowered on again. In quick start-up mode,the internal an turns on every now and thento remove internal heat. Tis is normal. o set

    the standby mode, enter the Settings menu andselect [System setting] (page 102).

    Standard (power save) standby modeTis mode consumes less power than quickstart-up, though the unit takes more time toresume operations when powered on again. oset the standby mode, enter the Settings menuand select [System setting] (page 102). Teserver unction cannot be used on this mode.

    Automatic analysis modeIn this mode, the unit analyzes thecharacteristics o music that was recorded orimported to the HDD Jukebox and categorizesthe music by x-DJ channel. For details on theautomatic analysis, see page 45. When analysisis being conducted, the On/Standby indicatorlights up orange and the illumination panelslowly flashes. I you want to cancel the analysis,press . Te analysis stops and the unit entersthe selected standby mode.

    Te time on the clock must be correctly set or theproper operation o unctions. Do the procedurebelow to set the clock. Te clock can also beautomatically set by connecting the unit to theInternet (page 86).

    1 Enter the Settings menu, select[Clock setting], and then pressENTER.

    2 Select [Online auto-sync clocksetting] and press ENTER.

    3 Select [Off] and press ENTER.

    4 Select the desired city from the[Time zone] setting.

    I the desired city does not appear in the[ime zone], select a city that is within thesame time zone as the desired city.

    5 Select [Standard] or [Summer time]for the [Summer time] setting.

    Notes

    I the AC power adaptor is supplied with theconnected device, it is recommended that youoperate the device on house current. When operatingthe device on batteries, make sure the remainingbattery power is sufficient. We do not guaranteeagainst malunctions, transer ailures, or destructiono audio data caused by shortages in battery power.

    Make sure that you do not disconnect the USB cableduring the transer o tracks to a WALKMAN oranother portable device that can be connected to theUSB port. I you do, the unit or the connected devicemay malunction.

    Note on the deletion of tracks thatwere transferred to a portable device

    Deleting tracks or playlists on the destination device

    You can delete tracks on a connected portabledevice.When you delete a playlist on a connectedWALKMAN, the playlist will be deleted, but notthe tracks within it.

    NoteMake sure not to disconnect the device or turn thepower off until the deletion has completed.

    1 Connect the WALKMAN or the

    portable device with the tracks youwant to delete.

    x-DJ uses Sonys 12 one Analysis to analyze the characteristics o tracks that have been recorded orimported to the HDD Jukebox and categorizes them into 27 channels. You can use x-DJ to play tracksthat correspond to a particular mood or time o day; or example, wake up tracks that play in themorning, tracks that make you relax, or tracks that raise your spirits. From those channels, you can jumpto the additional channels o ARIS, YEAR, MOOD and ALBUM by using a unction called MusicSurfin .Te analysis is perormed while the unit is in standby mode. While the unit is analyzing, the On/Standbyindicator lights up orange and the illumination panel slowly flashes.It takes about 15 minutes or the unit to analyze a 60-minute album.

    Notes

    Make sure not to disconnect the power cord while the unit is analyzing the recording contents. I you do, amalunction may occur.

    I the HDD Jukebox contains a large number o unanalyzed music tracks, then analysis may take a long time.

    TipAs a result o an analysis, the same track may be assigned to two or more channels.

    To cancel an analysisPress .Te analysis is cancelled. racks that were not analyzed are automatically analyzed the next time the unitenters standby mode.

    I you experience noise in an FM stereo broadcast,enter the Options menu and select [Setting] [FMmode] [Monaural]. Te reception will no longer bestereo, but it will be clearer. o change back to stereoreception, do the same procedure and select [Autostereo].

    For better broadcast reception, try changing thedirection or location o the antenna. For example,position the antenna near or outside a window. I thereception does not improve, it is recommended toconnect a commercially available external antenna.

    Receiving a DAB service*

    Beore you can receive DAB services, thebroadcast components (service components)must first be registered by conducting a DABInitial Scan (see Perorming DAB Initial Scanon page 54).

    Press DAB, or enter the HOME menu

    and select [DAB].Te DAB main display appears and the unit startsreceiving the services.
