MOTOR VALVE 2004In 2003, TechnoAlpin developed a new motor valve inorder to enhance the water valve assortment with aninteresting product, both from a technical and costeffective point of view. The motor valve is designed for fixed installation insidethe shaft, but can also be used in the mobile version. In this case, a hydrant is not required in the shaft, butsimply a locking valve (e.g. a manual valve). In theevent of a serious fault (e.g. power failure), the motorvalve will automatically shut-off, thanks to the batterysupply. The valve is activated by an electric motor, whichis connected to the snow generator.

TECHNOALPIN

ISO 9001:2000CERTIFIEDQuality has always been TechnoAlpin’s guiding principle. The ISO 9001:2000 certification received on January14 2004 is another milestone in the history of thecompany. The ISO certification confirms and reinforces the snowexperts’ commitment to quality. All production processesand the entire organisational structure comply fullywith this quality system in order to meet clients’ require-ments, also in the future. Thanks to the determination and hard work of TechnoAlpin’s collaborators, the new quality standards havebeen applied quickly and efficiently, which has recentlyculminated in the achievement of the ISO certification.

TECHNOALPIN NEWS

LECH SNOWMAKING TEST CONFIRMSTECHNOALPIN’S RELIABILITYThe comparative test between the major snow producers inthe world was held on 23rd and 24th February 2004 in Lecham Arlberg, organised by the Swiss technical magazine“Mountain Rider” in collaboration with the Lech ski lifts.TechnoAlpin participated with its propeller-driven machinesM5, M18 and M20 and the snow lance L9V with local compressor. The TechnoAlpin snow experts clearly emerged not only in thecomparative test with warm temperatures, but also with verylow temperatures. At a temperature between –7 and -12° Cwet bulb both the propeller-driven machines and the snowlances demonstrated their excellent snowmaking and snowquality performance.

MODERN SNOWMAKING TECHNIQUES

The Hohsaas high-altitude skiing area (maximum altitude 3200 m) offers a world of snow and sun, and a beautiful

view on the 18 peaks over 4000 m of the Saastal, the highest Swiss mountains. The Bergbahnen Hohsaas has more

than 35 km of ski runs, some of which are on a glacier. Almost 100 hectares of endless fun on skis.

BERGBAHNEN HOHSAASAUTOMATIC SNOWMAKING, MAXIMUM FUN

snow experts has interviewed ChristianBurgener, Bergbahnen Hohsaas snowmaking and rescue manager, about state-of-the-art snowmaking techniques.

snow experts: How would you de-scribe the development of snow-making in the Kreuzboden – Hohsaasarea until now?

Christian Burgener: The bases of technicalsnowmaking was started in 1981 with (prob-ably) the first Swiss low pressure installation. At that time, a pumping station was builton the “Sandigen Boden”, with pipelinesup to Kreuzboden. Snow coverage wasensured by 2 propeller-driven machines.Over the years, the installation has beenupgradet with new pumping stations, and

also the number of collaborators haveincreased. In 1998, the decision was madeto renew the installation from a technicalpoint of view. TechnoAlpin replaced andautomated shafts and pumping stations, and equipped the entire installation withdata transfer cables. At present, we have about 12 km ofpipelines (60 % completely automated)

The water is collected from 3 areasand is collected in an 8 km networkthrough 6 pumping stations havinga capacity of 120 l/sec. The wateris supplied to 63 automatic shaftsand 24 manual shafts into 49 snowguns and lances at a pressure ofapprox. 15 bar. With the new state-of-the-art snow-making installation, entire snow runsor sections can be prepared rap-idly. Thanks to the excellent qualityof the snow, the ski runs offer per-fect conditions for all levels of skiers.

Short overview of Berg-bahnen Hohsaassnowmaking installations

and 6 automatic pumping stations with amaximum water capacity of approx. 120l/sec. Snow coverage was ensured by 2 fanguns.

snow experts: In Hohsaas, when do youbegin to cover the runs with man madesnow?Christian Burgener: We usually start at thebeginning of November. Last year, though, the temperature conditions allowed us tostart at the end of October.

snow experts: Do any runs have priority,or do you open all ski runs at the sametime?Christian Burgener: We have to set some pri-orities, because pumps and generators havelimited power. Our fundamental target is to

cover the axis connecting Hohsaas to Trift(2050 m).

snow experts: According to you, whatcharacteristics should a snowmakinginstallation possess?Christian Burgener: A snowmaking installationmust be easy to use and ensure efficient oper-ation, as the “good” period for snowmakingis relatively short.

snow experts: What is the role of instal-lation functionality at limit tempera-tures?Christian Burgener: During the last two years,70 % of man made snow has been producedin a range between –2 and –4°C. In theseconditions, the Baby tower machines havebeen very useful. According to climatologists,

Page 8: SNOWMAGAZINE 1-2004 - Technoalpin · A disadvantage is that they require more time to be installed. snow experts: According to you, what is the advantage of fully automatic ... standstill

MODERN SNOWMAKING TECHNIQUES

because of the heating of the earth, snowmaking at limit temperatures will becomeincreasingly important.

snow experts: According to you, how important is it to equip snowmakinginstallations with mobile snow generators, fixed propeller machines andlances?Christian Burgener: To ensure efficiency, mainly fixed machines are used, as theyallow you to reduce to a minimum start-up and stop times and to make an optimaluse of short time intervals. Besides the fact that only the fixed machines are automatic.Since most of our ski area is located at a high altitude and is often windy, we almostexclusively use propeller-driven machines. Also snow lances are a valid and economicalalternative for the lower ski runs and sections that pass through forest. Anyway, Ithink it’s useful to have some mobile machines, because they are very versatile andmay be used where it is necessary. A disadvantage is that they require more timeto be installed.

snow experts: According to you, what is the advantage of fully automaticsnowmaking systems?Christian Burgener: I think that all installations are completely automatic now. As Isaid before, the ideal periods for snowmaking are very brief, so we have to makethe most of them. Starting up and stopping 6 pumping stations and at least 50 snowgenerators manually means wasting too much time and energy. Automation is veryfunctional: it saves time and personnel costs, and allows for ”intelligent” adjustment.

snow experts: What challenges in the snowmaking field do you think youwill have to face in the future?Christian Burgener: I believe that the continuous development of installations will bethe basis of a well-organized skiing complex. As in other sectors, development at astandstill means backsliding. Snowmaking at limit temperatures will become increasinglyimportant and will only be possible by using numerous machines and the power ofthe pumps. In order to maintain energy requirements within acceptable limits, the

small energy-saving fun guns on towerwill be more and more interesting in thefuture. Furthermore, we will also takeinto consideration the integration of awater basin. The greatest challenge forall ski areas is to cover an entire skiarea with snow in the shortest timepossible: that’s what we are workingon.

snow experts: What are yourtargets for the future?Christian Burgener: Our next target isto extend the snowmaking installationand to increase water supply to ensurea ski run from Hohsaas (3200 m) toKreuzboden. After the construction ofa new gondola in to 2005, we will beable to offer our guests ideal conditions. It is for this reason that we want toautomate also the small sections, suchas the slope down to the valley and theconnection with the glacier. Snowgenerators that have been useda lot will gradually be replaced.

Thanks for the interview.

How important is snowmaking for youand Sportbahnen now and in thefuture?Snowmaking is extremely important for ourski season that starts at the beginning ofNovember, because it allows us to ensureperfect conditions not only for our guestsbut also for the ski clubs that can starttraining early.Snowmaking will become essential in thefuture, due to the warming of the earth.

Currently, how many snowmaking gen-erators do you use?At the moment we use one TechnoAlpinM20, three M15, three M10 and one M18.

How many km of ski runs are in yourski area and what percentage of themare covered with man made snow?In the Gemsstock area approx. 23 % of29.5 km.

Do you intend to implement your snow-making installation?Yes, in 2004 we will install about 1.5 km ofwater pipelines, this helps to ensure goodsnow coverage in our ski area well inadvance.

Two years ago you implemented thesnowmaking installations. Can you tellus why you chose TechnoAlpin? We chose TechnoAlpin for various reasons.First of all, the offer of complete solutionsthat allow us to save time and energy. Thanks

to the references provided by other TechnoAlpin customers, we collected a lot of infor-mation. They said their snow guns wereeconomical, and it is true. Another advantageis that we are very near the TechnoAlpinpremises in Flüelen.

Do you use growag high pressure hoses? How many?We currently have about 500 m of Final 2”high pressure hoses made by growag fromGrosswangen.

Have you always used growag hoses? At the beginning of snowmaking, about 10years ago, we used normal fire hoses, whichwe soon replaced with growag high pres-sure hoses, for quality reasons.

Why growag “Final” high pressurehoses? We have been using some growag highpressure hoses for more than 10 years now. They are very resistant and have a verygood quality/price ratio.

growag AG offers a hose maintenanceservice in Switzerland. Do you use thisservice?Hoses get often damaged and must bereplaced from the installation. growag offersan excellent service and we use it at the endof the season. Faulty hoses are checked andshortened, so that our equipment is readyby the start of the new season.

In the last few years, the following solutions for field connectionshave proved to be particularly valuable:

1. SAFETY in terms of quality and sturdiness of connections, interms of compatibility, rate adjustment and use of the differentcomponents.

2. VERSATILITY thanks to the installation of inspection shafts thatenable maintenance operations on the pipeline, electrical network, vent system and data transfer network, at any time and withoutany trench works.

SAFE AND FLEXIBLE SOLUTIONSFOR FIELD CONNECTIONS

CONCRETE SHAFTBack in the 80’s, TechnoAlpin hadalready understood the importanceof inspection shafts for carrying outelectrical and pipe connections.Inspection shafts permit to checkcomponents or replace them forautomation. Our concrete shaft isalso used as a support for mountingelectrical sockets and fixed snowgenerators that are part of the instal-lation, such as snow lances and

propeller-driven machines,on the so-called UNIVERSALtowers.

INSTALLATIONS

As one of the leading snowmaking solution providers, TechnoAlpin’s first and foremost goal is to provide well-designedand optimised solutions, not only with regard to snow generators, but also to the accessories.

3. MODULAR SYSTEMS that allow for extension, renewal andintegration of the system at any time, easily and simply.

All these features, as well as innovative solutions in the range ofaccessories, characterise the TechnoAlpin system. Indeed, continuousdevelopment is imperative to meet customers’ growing requirements.

TYPES OF TECHNOALPIN SHAFTSDepending on the use, TechnoAlpin offers 2 types of shafts:standard shafts and compact shafts.

The STANDARD SHAFT is composed of 3 elements: a basering 50 cm high, an extension ring 100 cm high and a shaftclosing system, available with various types of blackout.

Shaft closing system with 1 blackout, which acts as access point.

Shaft closing system with 2 blackout, which act as access points for the installation of recessed electric sockets.

Shaft closing system with 3 blackout, which act as accesspoints for the installation of recessed electric sockets andas support for fixed snow generators.

The COMPACT SHAFT is composed of 2 elements and hasbeen designed by TechnoAlpin for installations requiringsuitability for helicopter operations. 3 types of closing systemsare available also for this shaft.

HYDROMAT SEThe TechnoAlpin Hydromat SE offers maximum precision andsafety. Thanks to the water pressure adjustment range from0 to 100 bar, the conditions for snow generator operation

are ideal. In the event of a fault or power failure, the Hydromat SE will automatically shut-off. This

hydraulic-electromechanical hydrant is auto-matically controlled by the snow generator, whichreads and compares set parameters and opens/closes the hydrant.Furthermore, the Hydromat SE features an electrickeypad for manual control, which can be activatedmechanically on the product itself in the eventof an emergency.A high pressure hose connects the Hydromat SE

to the snow generator, while a drain valve emptiesthe pipe and hoses.

The Hydromat SE hydrant is installed in the shaftslocated along the ski runs and can be activated by allTechnoAlpin snow generators.

ELECTRIC SOCKETThe electric socket is the connection point between the snow generatorand the snowmaking installation. The electric sockets made by TechnoAlpinare specifically designed for technical snowmaking. There are variousmodels, depending on the type of snow generator and adapted to custo-mers’ specific requirements.

EXTERNAL FIXED SOCKET: It includes a galvanised stainless steel boxwith a steel door and key. The socket is mounted on the lid of the shaftwhile the electric part is located inside the electric board.

RECESSED SOCKET: It includes the same elements as the external fixedsocket, with the difference that this socket can be recessed when it isnot used. For operation it is secured with the specific screw and safetysocket.

UNDERGROUND SOCKET: It includes a galvanised stainless steel box,on which the technical parts are mounted. The steel panel must be fixedinside the shaft. This model is usually used for fixed snow generators. The socket can be accessed only from the inside of the shaft.

VALVE BLOCK 2003The new 2003 Valve Block is integrated into the “centrallyventilated” snowmaking systems as water/compressed airdistribution and adjustment unit (operatingrange: 0 to 60 bar). It features the necessarysensors and measurement devices. Thanks to the new Valve Block, it will bepossible to install in the TechnoAlpin shafta single compact water/air unit, completewith adjustment device. This is anotheradvantage in terms of speed of installation.

11©

MOTOR VALVE 2004In 2003, TechnoAlpin developed a new motorvalve in order to enhance the water valveassortment with an interesting product, both froma technical and cost effective point of view. Themotor valve is designed for fixed installation insidethe shaft, but can also be used in the mobile version. In this case, a hydrant is not required in the shaft, but simply a locking valve (e.g. a manual valve). In the event of a serious fault (e.g. power failure),the motor valve will automatically shut-off, thanksto the battery supply. The valve is activated by anelectric motor, which is connected to the snow

generator.

E-MOTORThe e-motor is installed on any type of manual hydrantby means of a simple coupling system with an arrayof adapters. Thanks to the water pressure adjustmentrange from 0 to 100 bar, the conditions for snowgenerator operation are ideal. In the event of a faultor power failure, the battery-operated e-motor willautomatically close the manual hydrant. The batteriesare controlled by an integrated battery charger thatcharges them when necessary. The e-motor is an electricmotor that is automatically activated by a controldevice inside the snow gun that reads and comparesset parameters and opens/closes the hydrant by meansof the e-motor.The e-motor can be moved and positioned using 2buttons, while a simple coupling system allows for quickdisassembly, after which the hydrant can be operatedmanually. The high pressure hose of the hydrant (where the e-motor is connected)connects the snow generator water supply. The automatic drain valveon the manual hydrant empties the pipes and connection hoses. The e-motor is automatically activated by all TechnoAlpin snow generators.

TechnoAlpin USA was established in 2002 with it’smain office in Park City which is located central inthe Rocky Mountain region of Utah, also known asthe host city of the majority of the Alpine eventsduring the 2002 Olympic Winter games.During the first year in operation the US staff intro-duced automatic, fixed and mobile snow makingtechnology to many of the major ski resorts inColorado, Utah and California with great success.During this season TechnoAlpin produced qualitysnow for more than 10,000 hours without any majortechnical difficulties which can only be credited tothe superb quality of the equipment.

The North American market which is 98 % manuallyoperated and known for it’s vast consumption ofenergy and water was impressed with the reliabilityand the fact that the snowguns required 30 % lessenergy to produce the same amount of snow com-pared to one of the leading fan gun manufacturersproduced in North America. This means that ap-

proximately every 4th snowgun isrunning for “free” which equated toconsiderable reduction of the power billwhen you consider that many of theseski areas have more than 100 snowguns running. Also significant cost reduc-tion is seen in the infrastructure becausethe power system can be downsized.

Not only the energy savings surprisedmany, but the fact that the snow gunscould operate safely without humanintervention for several weeks at thetime which enable the snow makers todevote their attention to their manualsnow guns other places in the ski resort.Consistent snow quality and ease ofgrooming are other benefits they dis-covered.

Automatic snow making systems gaining momentum in North American.

In 2003 TechnoAlpin Canada was estab-lished with a branch office near WhistlerBritish Colombia which will host the majorityof the alpine events during the 2010Olympic Winter Games. A major milestonetook place during the summer of 2003when TechnoAlpin was awarded thecontract to construct the fully automaticsnowmaking system at Alpine Ski Club inCollingwood Ontario. This system whichhas a total of 70 snow guns, combines lowenergy guns the L6/9V, the H3 and theM18 automatic fan guns in a system whichcovers five ski runs in their new develop-

ment called the “Steeps”. The name isappropriate since some of these ski runshave a slope grade up to 90 % wheresnow production can only safely be donewith the automatic system. Our goal is to continue to provide superbproducts and services to meet the individualclient’s needs.
