Breaking Free of the Faculty Lounge Walls

Social media is a powerful tool for sharing opinions, gathering resources and engaging in conversations about issues critical to the teaching profession. During this moderated discussion, participants will interact with a panel of teachers who are empowering themselves by making creative use of new digital tools like Pinterest to get the support they need.

Learning to Look and Looking to Learn: Using Video Case Analysis for Collaborative Professional Learning

In this workshop teachers will receive access to ATLAS, an online case library of National Board Certified Teachers’ videos of classroom practice combined with their written analysis of the instruction and student work. Participants will develop a plan for how they could use video resources as the basis for collaborative professional learning in their own schools and networks. Session facilitators will draw upon their own experiences with video cases, sharing the lessons they’ve learned using both the videos and teacher reflections in ATLAS to make unobservable parts of classroom practice visible.

Effective Co-Teaching Structures to Maximize Student Learning

In this workshop, attendees will learn the five models of co-teaching frequently used in the classroom, as well as simple activities that support an effective co-teaching team. Examples of helpful tools, resources used to facilitate efforts, and effective program structures will be discussed. Facilitators will present strategies of how co-teaching can support exceptional students, such as students who are high-achieving, gifted and with modified or accommodated curricula. Attendees will learn how to make and/or build upon relationships with co-teachers and spend time brainstorming solutions to current challenges.

Designing for Teacher Collaboration that Positively Impacts Student Learning

Effective collaboration that leads to changes in student achievement requires more than just bringing teachers together to meet. This session will look both at the research and characteristic practices of teams that successfully engage in collaborative work that improves student learning. Participants will have an opportunity to explore the free tools supported by the National Center for Literacy Education to assess the strengths and weaknesses of group collaboration and to establish a plan for strengthening these practices. Whole group and small group time in this session will help teachers identify the developmental stages of groups in which they are involved and name inquiry questions and potential areas of focus and growth for their own work.

This interactive session will allow teachers to examine and discuss the best methods for engaging in policy conversations that impact their work in the classroom and learn about formal opportunities for teacher leadership.

Looking Back, Looking Ahead: Teachers Drive School-Wide Strategic Implementation Planning

Has your school seen some gains in student progress and achievement? Want to know how you can leverage progress to move students to the next level? Learn how teachers led the creation of Strategic Implementation Plans at their schools and involved fellow teachers in the process. Teacher leaders will share processes and tools for collaborating with a team of colleagues to build on recent progress.

Cage busting teachers need to see their role as extending beyond the classroom to encouraging a culture of excellence in their schools and systems. Facilitators will discuss: how to respond productively when professional development, teacher training, or leadership within a school is mediocre; how to proactively engage with principals and district leaders to enact change; how to constructively deal with underperforming employees; how to interact with parents and community leaders to foster support for new ideas; and how to effectively engage local, state, and even national policymakers in current policy discussions around schooling.

Leading the Next Generation of New Teachers

New Teacher Center is working with Teacher Leaders across America to support new teacher development. Learn how a Common Core State Standards (CCSS) inquiry approach coupled with strategic focused one-on-one mentoring accelerates new teacher development. Hear from a new teacher and her mentor how mentor guidance in using the Literacy Design Collaborative (LDC) tools and creating CCSS aligned units accelerate student growth.

ECET2 is a powerful transformative experience, but to harness the true power of the network, educators have to stay connected. In this session, ECET2 alums will share their experiences to exemplify the power of collaboration. They will also facilitate activities to model how to leverage personal relationships and social media to elevate and celebrate the profession. In addition, Gina Bianchini, Founder and CEO of Mightybell, will share the Mightybell webspace and show attendees how to create and launch an online community with their new connections.

Tools for Teachers: How ASCD is Encouraging Collaboration

This workshop will focus on the question: what about implementing the CCSS keeps you up at night? Participants will review what educators across the country are struggling with and explore ways to help. The session will highlight the combined efforts of ASCD and the Gates Foundation, including how the EduCore® website and the ASCD Virtual Learning Networks can support CCSS implementation. Educators will create a problem of practice and action steps to take back to their respective buildings.

Education Connections: Teachers of English Learners Collaborating Around the Common Core

Participants will engage in discussions around shifts in the Common Core and the implications of the Common Core for instruction of English learners. Participants will collaborate with other educators around ways to capitalize on teacher networks through both new and existing communities of teachers, and in both face-to-face and online settings. Participants will learn about a growing online network of teachers called Education Connections that provides resources, webinars, online communities of practice, and a monthly lesson planning competition, built with the goal of supporting teachers in their implementation of the Common Core with English learner students in secondary schools.

Fixed mindset in a school can slow down the attainment of school-wide goals for student progress and achievement.
