Firmware is software embedded in a devices semi#ermanent memory*7- Smart T4s

firmware contains a fi&esystem (a directory structure containin$ a##&ication fi&es and data) which

in turn contains the o#eratin$ system and other a##&ications insta&&ed on the T4*0

Ksers ty#ica&&ydown&oad firmware u#dates from the manufacturers website, or receive them on a thumb drive

mai&ed by the manufacturer*ften, a firmware u#date wi&& contain the com#&ete Smart T4 S,

as we&& as a##&ications to be run by the S*2

1f a firmware u#date is encry#ted, a Smart T4 owner cannot view or modify its contents

without circumventin$ the encry#tion by decry#tin$ the u#date fi&e* Nifferent encry#tion

schemes are used by different manufacturers (and on different T4s #roduced by a sin$&e

manufacturer), but most invo&ve the a##&ication of a we&&"nown encry#tion a&$orithm such as-dvanced 6ncry#tion System (-6S), in con+unction with a secret ey se&ected by the

manufacturer*!1n severa& cases, Smart T4 modification enthusiasts have discovered the secret

ey by brute force, i*e* by usin$ a #ro$ram to $uess every #ossib&e ey unti& the correct ey is

found, yie&din$ the abi&ity to decry#t the contents of u#dates*

;hen firmware encry#tion is used, the on&y way for a T4s owner to #roduce a va&id

u#date fi&e is to decry#t an u#date #rovided by the manufacturer, mae any desiredmodifications, and then encry#t the entire u#date contents accordin$ to the manufacturers

chosen scheme* Ksin$ this decry#t"modify"encry#t #rocess, a T4 owner can #&ace new or

certain mode&s of Sony .ravia Smart T4s can be circumvented by causin$ the T4 to run a

&tem . 'sserted /oninfringing Uses

.y accessin$ the firmware runnin$ on their Smart T4s, users can mae severa& im#ortant

non"infrin$in$ uses of a##&ications (F'SS and otherwise) #re"insta&&ed on the T4, other

a##&ications that the user insta&&s on the T4, and the users own di$ita& media*

Licensed use and modi"ication o" $LOSS hardware7speci"ic

Conservancy is #rimari&y concerned with faci&itatin$ the use of F'SS a##&ications

#roduced by its member #ro+ects and other F'SS community members* These a##&ications are

&icensed accordin$ to terms that #ermit and encoura$e users to co#y, modify, and share themfree&y* -s stated above, some of these a##&ications, such as .usy.o/ and Samba, are common&y

embedded in Smart T4s by manufacturers and subseJuent&y distributed to every #erson who

#urchases these T4s* Conservancy a&so re#resents severa& individua& deve&o#ers who own

co#yri$ht in 'inu/, the o#eratin$ system erne& u#on which the ma+ority of Smart T4 o#eratin$systems are bui&t*

The s#ecific F'SS &icense used by the .usy.o/ and 'inu/ erne& #ro+ects is the 38K

3enera& Pub&ic 'icense version 2 (3P'v2), attached as 6/hibit .* Samba uses version ! of thesame &icense, attached as 6/hibit C* -s stated in the &icense te/t, 3P'v2 #ermits every reci#ient

of the software to e/ercise the four freedoms common to a&& F'SS: the freedom to run,
