Entries being accepted into Nifty Fifty bonspiel in Esquimalt

2

The 49th Nifty Fifty Bonspiel runs from March 13-16 at Esquimalt Curling Club in Victoria.

This fun bonspiel moves between the Interior, Lower Mainland and the Island each year and is held at the end of the curling season.

You must be 50 years of age and only two teams per club may enter. A modified Brandon draw decides the winners. There are only two games per day. After your first draw the remaining

times and games are then set. Some participants will see the sights of the city while some bring their golf clubs. One skip’s meeting occurs at the start of the annual event where all decisions are made and

the host club and city for the following year is announced. The welcoming Wine and Cheese sees many renewing old friendships.

This year, organizers have room for a couple of

teams from the Mainland or the Interior and would like to invite previous or new participants to submit entries to Lu Neilson [email protected] or 250-381-3887.

Most teams dress up for the banquet. The host club selects a theme and honour the best dressed. Next year the host club will be Langley for the 50th anniversary.

If you have any questions you can email Darleen Warburton at [email protected].

A Curl BC Podium Preparation Camp run at Grand Forks Curling Club was a big success.

Leigh Wilson-Starchuk, the President of Grand Forks Curling Club, said: “Not only did the weather cooperate for the travelling attendees, we had a great facilitator too! Coach Dave (McGarry) did an outstanding job with the campers! The feedback from parents and coaches was great, comments

like engaging and well planned. The curlers had light bulb moments as did some of the coaches. We are so happy that we had the opportunity to host this camp. With our junior/youth program going strong we will likely be looking to host other camps in the future.”

The Travelers Curling Club Championship wrapped up at the end of November with teams from BC enjoying high level competition with some of the best club curlers in the nation.

The men’s team of Skip Kevin Britz, Third Kenneth Britz, Second James Crawford and Lead Darren Jarvis, were representing Chilliwack Curling Club.

The women’s team of Skip Leanne Andrews, Third Jenn Routliffe, Second Kim McLandress and Lead Phillppa Johnston, were representing Cloverdale Curling Club.

The BC women made it to the quarterfinals at the Ottawa event, but lost to Ontario in a tight game that ended 5-6.

The overall winners were PEI for the women and Newfoundland for the men.

But there were more winners than just the men’s and women’s champions in Ottawa.

The event, which concluded on Nov. 28 at the Ottawa Hunt and Golf Club, raised more than $50,000 for Curling Canada Rocks & Rings, the highly popular program that gives thousands of school-age kids across the country their first exposure to curling with indoor equipment used in school gymnasiums.

The money raised at the Travelers Curling Club Championship will mean more than 57,000 kids will be able to enjoy a Curling Canada Rocks & Rings

session at their school.Teams at the Travelers Curling Club

Championship were competing off the ice to see who could raise the most money in support of Curling Canada Rocks & Rings.

Leading the way was the Nunavut women’s team, skipped by Angela Dale, who raised $7,661.

The first events of the new men’s bonspiel tours on Vancouver Island and in the Thompson-Okanagan got going in Nanaimo and Kelowna.

The Vancouver Island tour includes eight bonspiels with stops in Nanaimo, Powell River, Parksville, Duncan, Glen Meadows (North Saanich), Qualicum Beach, Kerry Park and Victoria.

The Thompson-Okanagan tour visits Kelowna, Enderby, Vernon, Penticton, Salmon Arm, Armstrong and Kamloops.

Two teams each from those tours will compete against eight teams from Region 11 in the inaugural B.C. Men’s Bonspiel Tours Championship, March 18-20 at Cloverdale.

Scott Mol, Shelley Birston and Della Bird have been honoured with awards after saving the life of curling competitor Keith Switzer following his on-ice heart attack.

Keith had been competing in the BC Mixed Doubles Curling Championship at Peace Arch Curling Centre on January 30 2015 when he suddenly collapsed.

Scott Mol, the on-ice official, was the first to respond to Keith’s fall and along with Shelley Birston, a registered nurse who was competing at the event, performed CPR on Keith.

Della Bird, also a registered nurse who was on site supporting her husband Kent Bird, the manager of Peace Arch Curling Centre, helped re-start Keith’s heart with the assistance of the AED kit on site.

The three people are credited not only with saving Keith’s life, but also preserving his quality of life through their quick and effective response. The three individuals have now all been presented with a St John Ambulance National Lifesaving Award at a ceremony in Surrey.

Keith said he remains incredibly grateful for what Scott, Shelley, and Della were able to do, and he also appreciates the concern, support, and contributions of many others who were present at Peace Arch Curling Centre on that day. Keith said:”I am doing my level best to do justice and honour to these lifesaving efforts as my life continues.”

To save Keith’s life, CPR from Scott and Shelley and an AED shock from Della was needed to get a response. The first shock only got a temporary response but the second shock brought Keith into motion.

Although not fully coherent, once Keith was resuscitated, he began communicating with the responders. He had no idea what had occurred (i.e. - heart attack) and had thought he had just slipped and fallen. Keith was clear that he was curling and was

ready to start the next end (clothes or no clothes). The response team had a little difficulty in convincing him to stay down and be calm.

The emergency team then arrived, thanks to Kent Bird calling 911. This included paramedics and the fire department. The paramedics transported Keith to Peace Arch Hospital Emergency and he remained there until the cause of the heart failure was determined and arrangements were made for corrective action.

The fact that Keith survived the heart failure and did so without damage to any part of his cardiovascular system is credited to the quick and effective actions of the first responders (Scott, Shelley and Della). Others contributed in response to what occurred; however, these three individuals performed the hands-on life saving intervention. Keith acknowledges he is “one lucky guy”!

A comprehensive battery of diagnostic tests was conducted, both at Peace Arch and Vancouver General Hospitals. The most revealing was the Angiogram at VGH. This test identified almost total blockage of the main

coronary artery as the cause of the heart failure, presenting a continued high risk. Tests also confirmed that, fortunately, there had been no damage to the heart or other parts of the cardiovascular system.

Successful bypass surgery was performed on February 18 2015 - by Dr. Richard Cook using Jack (the robot).

Keith, a member at Richmond and Vancouver Curling Clubs, is now making a full recovery and is already curling regularly!

The provincial government in British Columbia will be replacing the existing Society Act (under which not-profit corporations in BC are incorporated) with a new Societies Act. The date for that replacement is November 28, 2016.

From that date, organizations will have two years to transition to comply with the new Societies Act. What does

transition mean? Well, your BC-based organization will need to review its constitution and bylaws to ensure that it complies with the new Act. Changes will be required - some big and some small depending on the current structure of your organization.

In 2016, Curl BC Vice Chair Peter Muir will be putting together a template for members to use that will

make it simpler for them to comply with the expected rule changes.

There is also information available from the Sport Law & Strategy Group.

Their blog post is published in the link below and will be updated on a regular basis.

Changes to the Society Act will affect your non-profit

In 2007 the Richmond Centre for Disability (RCD) hosted the inaugural Wheelchair Curling Bonspiel.

There were six regional teams competing in the event. At that time wheelchair curling was little known to the community. Because of the passion of a small group of athletes with disabilities, who were instrumental to the establishment of this sporting event, the event has grown and become an established international tournament.

Among the athletes was Vincent Miele, Chairperson of the RCD Board of Directors, who won several provincial wheelchair-curling championships as well as the Athlete with a Disability award from the Richmond Sport Awards in 2013.

Another wheelchair athlete was part of the Organizing Committee for the first four years. That was chair Gary Cormack, who was a member of the Paralympic Canadian Wheelchair Curling Team that won the gold medal in the 2006 Torino

Paralympic Games, where the sport was staged for the first time. Following that event, Curl BC named “Athlete with a Disability” for 2007.

In 2015, the RCD hosted its 9th annual wheelchair curling bonspiel tournament – the 2015 Canadian Open from November 18 to 22. Ten teams participated, including three international teams, two teams from Russia and a team from Switzerland. It was very fulfilling to see the keen competitions

among the top wheelchair curling teams in the world. During the tournament, the world-class teams competed head-to-head; and many spectators were awed by the intense and electrifying competitiveness, as well as the incredible skills displayed by the athletes.

After five days, with a 10-game round robin and play-off competition, Team Quebec won the gold medal, with the silver medal going to Team Russia 2 and the bronze going to Team

Manitoba. In the Wheelchair World Ranking, Canada and Russia are both in the Top 5. Therefore for Team Quebec and Team Manitoba to excel in the RCD Bonspiel is something all Canadians should be proud of.

The RCD strives to make this event nationally and internationally acclaimed and hopes to attract quality competitors to Richmond. It will be their 10th anniversary of hosting the Bonspiel in 2016. It is going to be a top-notch tournament!

International Wheelchair Bonspiel is great success
