The Skagit/Island Coun-ties Builders Association (SICBA) is a trade asso-

ciation of builders and associate members devoted to supporting its members – encouraging them to build quality homes and businesses, as well as educating and assisting the public. Chartered in 1979, SICBA is affiliated with the National Association of Home Builders in Washington, D.C. (NAHB) and the Building Industry Association of Washington in Olympia (BIAW).

SICBA is an excellent source for referrals to the general public. Our membership base includes builders, remodelers, specialty contractors, and other professionals that support the building trade by providing related products and/or services. All of SICBA’s contractor members are registered, licensed, bonded and insured as required by law.

SICBA provides a myriad of benefits to its members including educational classes, networking and marketing opportunities, legal advice and safety assistance. Many

members are also eligible for group rate health insurance and enroll-ment in the Return on Industrial Insurance Program which helps recover some of the L&I premiums paid in if the business has a good safety record. SICBA members receive local, state and national legislative representation to sup-port issues that affect the industry as a whole. SICBA is proud to be recognized as a leader in the home building industry and a proud pro-ponent of private property rights.

Today, SICBA is 620 companies strong and growing. We are your neighbors and community leaders, providing education and support for building industry professionals. Is it hard to build green? Is it a lot more expensive? Do you have to live in a straw-bale cottage or some

other strange building to say you’re a green homeowner? No, no, and most decidedly no!

The National Association of Home Builders’ (NAHB) Model Green Home Building guidelines are about to celebrate their sixth birthday. Designed to help bring residential green building into the mainstream, the guidelines also demystify the process and debunk the myths of green building for consumers – and for homebuilders.

Using the guidelines, local home building associations are creating regionally appropriate green building programs for interested builders. That interest is growing rapidly. Twelve state and local associations have launched voluntary green building programs, with another dozen on the way. The Skagit/Island Counties Builders As-sociation has had their program for just over four years.

The guidelines include an easy-to-follow checklist to make sure the build-er is incorporating all aspects of green building into each project. That makes it easier to build green – and that’s the

beauty of the voluntary guidelines. Is it more expensive to build

green? Experienced builders say it doesn’t have to be. Guidelines-based programs award points for resource efficiency, and if you’re using fewer materials, you’re saving money, they point out. Some green building ideas – like positioning a home’s windows to best take advantage of natural light – doesn’t cost any more than conven-tional building – and saves money for the homeowner.

Nor does green building consist of neighborhoods filled with yurts, un-derground bunkers or geodesic domes. When a house is green but looks like other houses in the neighborhood – and can be replicated by large-scale building companies – then we know green is mainstream. We’re seeing that happen right now.

There are more green building products than ever. Easier to use insulation, chemically neutral paints and flooring and natural landscap-ing products are no longer difficult to find. Most home improvement stores carry a full line of compact fluorescent bulbs, which use 70 percent less energy, and advances in solar roof panels and

shingles, wind turbines, and efficient appliances make green technology less expensive than even a few years ago.

But there are scattered gray clouds on a mostly green horizon. Efforts to mandate green building are the perfect example of good intentions gone awry. Green building needs to stay voluntary to continue to allow for market innovation and to make sure that the additional money spent to build ‘green’ goes to building im-provements, not excessive certification fees. NAHB discourages efforts to dictate and legislate what constitutes acceptable green building practices because the building science in this area is still evolving. We don’t want to see this dynamic process frozen in place.

Homebuyers don’t have to wait that long to learn more about being green: download a free guide at www.nahb.com/greeninnovation. Contact the Skagit/Island Counties Build-ers Association at (360)757-6916 for more information or to find a “Green” Builder.

To sign up for NAHB’s free con-sumer e-newsletter, visit www.nahb.org/housekeys.

For many Americans, the activi-ties of government are about as important to them as an old beat-

up pair of tennis shoes they never wear anymore. Politics, particularly at the national level, can be ruthless, destruc-tive, and ugly. It’s no wonder why so many of us choose to turn our attention to the more pleasant things in life.

However at the local level, the activ-ities of our government and actions of our elected officials tend to be far more civil and enjoyable to be part of. It’s also critically important that we make the effort to become involved in the decisions of our local elected officials, because often times, these decisions are the ones that most directly impact our lives and our businesses. That is why

SICBA’s Government Affairs Pro-gram exists: To engage our members with their local government, get them involved in the process, and make sure their voice and opinions are heard!

In the past 15 months, SICBA has organized five trips to Olympia during two legislative sessions to visit with our locally elected state legislators; hosted dozens of elected officials at our monthly dinner meetings; met with state legislators, county commission-ers, city councilmembers and mayors at our Government Affairs Committee meetings, assisted members in deliver-ing their message to elected officials through phone calls, e-mails, letters and public testimony, and much more.

Many SICBA members have

already answered the call to become more involved with their government, and their participation is leading the way for SICBA to become a significant player in critical public policy decisions. But we need more involvement from folks like you. If you are not already a SICBA member but are involved or support the building trades in one way or another, our Government Affairs Program is just one more great reason to become a member!

If you have any questions or want to find out more about how you can become involved in SICBA’s Govern-ment Affairs Program, please feel free to contact me at the SICBA office at (360)757-6916 or via e-mail at [email protected].

We live in a Do-It-Yourself (DIY) world where we have entire television stations

dedicated to showing and teaching us that anyone can be their own contrac-tor – and anyone, with the help of their spouse and/or friends, can remodel their home. Those same shows tend to leave out the fact that 30 minutes can’t begin to show you– let alone teach you– how to do all that is required to complete a project with quality. This is where a professional contractor comes in.

In these difficult economic times, putting hard-earned money into a home is still a great investment. Know-ing where and how to focus money spent on a remodel can not only change your home into the space that you dream of, but can add consid-erable value to your home as well. According to Loan Officers Guide 3.7 “Return on your Investment,” there

are several areas that will help to get the livability desired, and return a substantial percentage of the dollars spent at resale of the home. Here are a few examples:

Remodeled kitchen: 150%Add a fireplace: 100%Second bath: 90%Room addition: 80%Remodeled bath: 75%Master suite: 70%Deck: 70% This is where a professional re-

model contractor’s expertise helps to get the biggest bang for your buck. By partnering with homeowners, a profes-sional remodel contractor can help achieve a dream remodel at an afford-able price. This can be achieved with a combination of professional’s help, and homeowners taking an active role. Partner this with meticulous planning,

compromise, and cost-saving decisions, and you have the magic equation.

Remodeling is not only new con-struction, it is a creative process. This creative process involves integrating old with new, problem-solving for unique situations, and conscienciously budgeting. Meeting with clients for the first time tends to be a real fact-finding mission. This is where expectations, passions, wants and desires, and most importantly, the budget, are discussed. By taking the time to plan the best combination of solutions for a home owner’s wants and needs, a remodel contractor will be able to partner with the homeowner to achieve their dream, and increase the value of their home.

In the end, the choice to hire a contractor for a remodel is up to the homeowner but partnering with the right contractor can turn the potential pitfalls of a DIY remodel into a pleas-ant experience.

Congratulations! You own some property and have commis-sioned or purchased a floor

plan you like—the time has come to build your dream house. Here in the Pacific Northwest, it really doesn’t matter what the current season is be-cause we don’t have that many below-freezing temperatures to deal with in the winter. You may feel ready to dive right in and construct your own home from the ground up, potentially saving the cost of hiring a general contractor and immersing yourself in the nuts and bolts of the construction process. However, before embarking single-handedly on the adventure of building a home, take some time to consider your decision carefully. While acting as your own general contractor can be an exciting and worthwhile experience, it also can be a complicated, techni-cally demanding and time-consuming commitment. For many reasons, hiring an experienced professional to handle the day-to-day aspects of the building process can be an excellent decision, and one that ensures that the end re-sult is a comfortable, well-built home for you and your family.

A general contractor has significant experience in the actual home building process.

Building a home is a complex activ-ity. Although your subcontractors will provide specific expertise in areas like pouring the foundation and wiring the house, if you act as your own contrac-tor you will need to consider your ability to manage the overall process. Do you know the order in which activities must be completed, and have the technical know-how to oversee the construction of your home from start to finish? If you are unsure about your expertise in some areas, it pays

to hire a general contractor to direct the building process; he or she will be familiar with both the big picture ac-tivities and the smaller details that are equally important to a well-built home.

Building homes is a general contractor’s “day job.”

Building a home can be a full-time job. If your “day job” is demanding and allows you little free time, con-sider hiring a general contractor, since it can take up to three or four months of daytime supervision to build a home from foundation to rooftop. Just as you have significant expertise in your field, general contractors are well-versed in the day-to-day activities of home construction. For example, a contractor will know how to find qualified subcontractors, ensure that they arrive at the right time, in the right order, with access to the right materials; he or she then will oversee their work. A general contractor also is responsible for scheduling not only the subcontractors, but also securing any necessary permits, building to the specifications of your plans and local building codes, and scheduling the inspections by various agencies that must be completed before work can continue. Finally, when it comes to everyday troubleshooting, a general contractor can be priceless. Small set-backs can turn into much larger issues if they are not handled quickly, and a contractor will spend much of his or her day smoothing out any wrinkles that arise.

A general contractor has the relation-ships to get the job done.

When you hire a contractor, you also obtain access to a specialized network of information and resources.

Why Hire a General Contractor?

Professional builders generally have well-established relationships with re-liable subcontractors like electricians and plumbers, and familiarity with the time it takes to complete various phases of the building process, which a novice owner-builder can lack.

For example, a contractor will have a pool of subcontractors who will be willing to work on your project, even if that means working extra hours in order to finish a job. As a homeowner, you may not have such an advantage. Subcontractors don’t know if you will be a professional and organized boss, and more importantly, they are aware that this is probably a one-time job, which can result in you being low on the priority list for scheduling. When you work with a contractor, you benefit from the higher scheduling priority given to well-known profes-sional builders who need services on an ongoing basis.

A general contractor is prepared to deal with complications and delays in construction.

An experienced contractor already

knows about the pitfalls involved in building a home, and can find solu-tions more easily because he or she deals with these problems every day. For example, in case of a natural disas-ter, contractors have the knowledge—and more importantly, the time—to prepare your jobsite for impending heavy rain or high winds. Bad weather can wreak havoc on your schedule and even the quality of construction, and a professional can help you avert these potential problems.

A general contractor knows about build-ing codes and other legal issues.

Construction in virtually all jurisdictions is regulated by build-ing codes, primarily for the purpose of providing minimum standards of health and safety for the public. A general contractor deals with building codes in your area on a daily basis, and likely has learned the best and fastest ways to comply with the maze of rules and requirements. However, build-ing codes are just the tip of the legal iceberg when it comes to constructing a home. What happens if you, your

neighbor or someone you’ve hired gets injured while your home is under construction? Proper liability insur-ance is essential, and may be compli-cated and expensive to obtain on your own; however, professional contractors generally carry both worker’s com-pensation and liability insurance to protect themselves—and you—against any unfortunate events.

Finally, remember that if you build your home yourself, there is no war-ranty for your own work, and you are ultimately responsible for the quality of your project. Depending on your agreement with your general contrac-tor, you can ease much of this burden and place your home in the hands of an experienced professional who can quickly and efficiently address any problems.

Surplus Materials Sale 1 PM, Saturday, March 20th

The Skagit/Island Counties Builders Association is again planning an old-time, bargain-by-the-minute surplus building material sale at the 2010 Home & Garden Show.

The event is scheduled at 1 PM on Saturday, March 20th, in the Pavilion at the Skagit County Fairgrounds. In past years, this has been a big hit with local residents and do-it-yourselfers.

The fairgrounds Pavilion is a large facility allowing plenty of space for a diverse selection of quality bargains to be purchased. In years past, tons of materials have been sold in as little as two hours. Bargain prices are guaranteed on lumber, doors, trim and other building and remodeling materials.

The sale begins promptly at 1 PM in the Pavilion.

Have you ever seen the TV show “If Walls Could Talk” and been curious as to what is in your own home? We may not all have valuable buried trea-

sure squirreled away in our walls, but in my experience as a remodel contractor, there are small treasures of sorts in all homes. Over the years I have found tools, pictures, miscel-laneous paperwork, old newspapers, footprints of previous remodels and many notes and markings from the people whom have worked on the structure prior till now.

As I deconstruct a structure to make improvements, I try to share all that I find with my clients. Then, I suggest that they put together their own little time capsule that I can place in a wall or cavity to add to the history of their home. This is a great family project; it may even be later

generations of your family that finds the prize.Possible suggestions are:• Personal notes• Family photos• Keepsake items• Copy of construction plans• A current newspaper (local and/or national)• Contractor or other business card (I usually leave one anyway)

Place the items in a zipper storage bag and work with your contractor to place it in a location where it will be safe and have the possibility of being found in the future. The most important thing about placing a time capsule is to have fun.

Don’t forget the “time Capsules!”

In today’s changing housing mar-ket, potential homeowners have more questions than ever. How

do I know if my builder or remodeler is the best one for the job? How do I choose a home sales professional that I am confident has my best interests in mind? How can I modify my home so I can continue living here after I retire?

Like any other profession, a chang-ing housing market can translate into fiercer competition for your business. How can you differentiate the truly great from the good? Advanced educa-tion!

The National Association of Home Builders’ (NAHB) University of Housing offers comprehensive training programs to builders, remodelers and other industry specialists that lead to professional credentials. The credential behind your potential professional’s name means that he or she has passed rigorous coursework and committed to

be among the best in the business. This means you can rest assured that you are working with a qualified building specialist ready to meet your needs.

NAHB’s targeted curriculum and accomplished teachers help builders and remodelers learn the latest tech-nology, building methods and business practices. Designations also give con-sumers a guide to selecting profession-als who have specialized in their areas of interest, whether it is aging-in-place or marketing. Consumers can rest as-sured that a credentialed University of Housing graduate has excellent train-ing, practical experience and in-depth knowledge.

When we go to doctors, surgeons, accountants, or attorneys, we always ask for information on their credentials. Why shouldn’t you, the general public do the same when choosing a builder or remodeler?

For example, imagine that you have

an elderly parent who is moving in with you, and you want to ensure they will be safe and comfortable in their new environs. Preparations to make the home more accessible for your loved one may entail working with a remod-eler to widen doors, install shower bars for improved safety and make other modifications to your home to accom-modate disabilities or accessibility chal-lenges. Choosing a professional who has earned the Certified Aging-in-Place Specialist (CAPS) designation ensures that your remodeler has completed a demanding curriculum that covers how to overcome common age-related barriers.

Finding a professional in your area who has earned an NAHB designation is as easy as visiting www.sicba.org, and clicking on “For Consumers” then “Certi-fied Professionals” in the navigation area. Or, contact the Skagit/Island Counties Builders Association at (360)757-6916.

Designations in the following areas are currently awarded by nAHB’s university of Housing:

• Certified Graduate Associate (CGA) • Certified Graduate Builder (CGB) • Graduate Master Builder (GMB)• Certified Graduate Remodeler (CGR) • Certified Aging In Place Specialist (CAPS) • Certified New Home Sales Professional (CSP)• Master Certified New Home Sales Professional (MCSP)• Certified New Home Marketing Professional (CMP)• Member, Institute of Residential Marketing (MIRM) • Housing Credit Certified Professional (HCCP) • Certified Leasing Professional (CLP)• Registered in Apartment Management (RAM)• Advanced RAM• Certified Green Professional (CGP)

Before you sign the final papers on a

new home, you and your builder will do a “walk-through” to con-duct a final inspection. The walk-through pro-vides an opportunity for you to spot items, which may need to be corrected or ad-justed, and allows you to learn about the way your new home works.

Some things a builder should ad-dress during the walk-through are:

• The operation of the home’s components

• The buyer’s responsibilities for main-tenance and upkeep

• Warranty coverage and procedures

When you buy a new house, you will receive a stack of instruction booklets on how to operate the kitchen appli-ances, the heating and cooling systems, the water heater and other features in the home. Most likely you won’t be able to get through all of the material while also managing a move. Use the walk-through to have the builder go over the operation of these items so you can operate them correctly until you have time to read the material.

You will also need to learn about your maintenance and upkeep respon-sibilities as the homeowner. Most new homes come with a one-year war-ranty on workmanship and materials. However, such warranties do not cover problems that develop because of fail-ure to perform required maintenance. Many builders provide a booklet explaining common upkeep responsi-bilities of new homeowners and how to perform them.

When inspecting the house, an effective way to handle this is with a checklist. The list should include everything that needs attention, and you and your builder should agree to a timetable for repairs. Builders prefer to remedy problems before you move in because it is easier for them to work in an empty house. Some items may have to be corrected after move-in. For instance, if your walk-through is in the winter, your builder may have to delay landscaping adjustments until spring.

It is important that you be thorough and observant during the walk-through. Carefully examine all surfaces of counters, fixtures, floors and walls for possible damage. Sometimes disputes arise because a buyer may discover a gouge in a countertop after move-in, and there is no way to prove whether it was caused by the builder’s workers or the buyer’s movers. Many builders ask their buyers to sign a form at the walk-through stating that all surfaces have been inspected and that there were no damages other than what has been noted on the walk-through checklist. You can find a walk-through checklist at www.nahb.org/forconsumers.

A thorough walk-through will give both you and your homebuilder peace of mind and allow you to enjoy your brand new home for years to come!

Tips for a Successful Walk-Through of Your New Home

As a new home owner, you are excited about getting your house in order — setting up

furnishings, rearranging and deco-rating. But once you have place for everything and everything in its place, it’s time to get a handle on the routine maintenance you’ll need to perform to help ensure that you and your family live comfortably in your new home for years to come.

Maintaining a clean home is one way to ensure its longevity. Here are some tips for properly maintaining some of the systems in your new home:

Heating and Cooling SystemsLate summer or early fall are the

ideal times to do an annual inspection and cleaning of these systems.

Change or wash the filters every three months.

If you have a gas furnace, keep your pilot light burning during the summer to help keep the furnace dry and pre-vent corrosion.

Registers help regulate the flow of air and maintain the desired tem-perature in your home. Keep registers closed in rooms you don’t use to save on cooling/heating costs.

PlumbingEvery member of your family

should know where the intake valves are located. Label each one.

If any of your appliances develop a leak, inspect your drain trap. A par-tially clogged drain can cause overflow. Use a plunger or a plumber’s snake to unclog the drain. If you need to, use boiling water to help unclog a partially opened drain. Call a plumber if these techniques don’t work.

A worn washer, a loose part in a faucet or steam in a hot water pipe are generally the causes of a noisy pipe. Do not hesitate to repair the noise — vibrations can follow the noise and lead to leaks.

Gutters and DownspoutsClear away leaves, tree limbs and

other debris from gutters and down-spouts.

Turn the downspouts away from your home’s foundation.

Every four to six years, paint gutters that are not made of aluminum or vinyl to help prevent rust.

Remember to read the instruction manual for every appliance in your new home. The manuals provide recom-mended cleaning and maintenance schedules. Also familiarize yourself with any warranties you have on both the house and its systems. Some war-ranties may be voided if problems arise because of failure to perform routine maintenance.

For more information about taking care of your new home, contact The Skagit/ Island Counties Builders Association at (360)757-6916 and request the generic maintenance CD. The cost is $20 but you will more than save that amount on just one maintenance action that keeps you from having to call the repair man.

By Susan ReimerThe Baltimore Sun

It is hard to think about growing veg-etables in weather that

won’t even let you drive to the grocery store to buy them.

But planning your garden may be just what you need to distract you from the blizzard outside.

And Mel Bartholomew makes that planning so much easier.

This civil engineer-turned-gardener is the originator of square-foot gar-dening, a system of 4-foot-by-4-foot aboveground boxes that make starting your first vegetable garden so much less intimidating. And so much more productive.

Bartholomew takes the advice I of-fered in my first column for rookie veg-etable gardeners — plant in a garden box about six to eight inches deep filled with a good growing mix and compost so you don’t have to dig and you don’t have to worry about your soil quality — and he takes it a step further.

Divide that box — no bigger than four-feet-by-four-feet — into square-foot grids and plant a different vegeta-ble, or flower, in each, with anywhere from one to 16 plants, depending on the type of plant. (Judge by the planting instructions on your seed packet or the instructions that come with your seedlings.)

That’s 16 plants or 16 different veg-etables — a very manageable number for the rookie gardener. On his Web site, squarefootgardening.com, and in

his revised book, “All New Square Foot Gardening,” Bartholomew also has instructions for beans and other vine crops.

If you want more growing space, build a second box, but separate the boxes by two or three feet to create a walkway between. That allows you easy access to tend, water and harvest your vegetables without stepping on and compressing the soil.

The key to Bartholomew’s system is the one-foot-by-one-foot grid. It eliminates the temptation to plant in rows, which he finds very inefficient. The grids can be made from wood, plastic strips or old blinds, and they are screwed into place on top of the box or laid on top of the ground.

When you have harvested one of the grids, plant a new crop.

Square-foot gardening has taken

off, and there are lots of Web sites and online videos to help you get started. This method requires less space, less water, fewer seeds and less work. And it is perfect for children — simply build a three-foot-by-three-foot square for them to tend.

Bartholomew, who sold over 1 million copies of his first book,

has come out of retirement and started a foundation

to promote square-foot — or rather, square-meter — gardening in the poorest

countries to increase pro-ductivity and battle hunger.

But you can get started on a much smaller scale.

On Gardening: An easy way to get your thumbs green Your front yard is the “face”

of your house: the first thing people see when they visit you.

Whether you plan to landscape your front yard for your own pleasure, or to prepare your house for sale, make sure it looks its best. After all, you never have a second chance to make a good first impression.

Before you make the first trip to the nursery, determine what your long-term goal is for the front yard. Would you like trees for shade, grass for the kids to play on, or flowers and plants to cater to your gardening hobby?

Once you have your yard’s purpose in mind, do some homework. It is important to monitor the cycles of light and moisture in your yard. Take note where the sun is at different times of the day. Watch for areas of daylong

shade or sun so you can match the plants to their lighting needs. Also, take a sample of the dirt in your yard to a lawn and garden center and ask them to determine the pH and chemi-cal composition of your soil. Your soil’s characteristics will have a signifi-cant impact on what you will be able to grow successfully.

Think locally. Choose trees, flow-ers, shrubs and other plants that are common where you live. By choosing plants that are native or are tolerant of our weather, your yard will require less work and give you better results. Find out what is native to your area by contacting the WSU Extension Service in Mount Vernon.

For a garden, keep in mind two key elements — shape and texture. To give character to your garden, select

a variety of plants of different shapes and sizes. For example, combine hostas which have large, coarse leaves with small flowery shrubs such as azaleas. Also, keep architectural details in mind when you choose plants. Rough, tex-tured plants will highlight stucco walls, but a picket fence will look better with soft flowers and gentle vines.

Finally, keep it simple. Make sure your landscaping complements the structural details of your home instead of overwhelming it.

By taking a few additional steps in the planning process, you’ll spend more time enjoying your yard instead of working in it. And, if you are pre-paring your house for sale, you’ll see an added benefit since a well-planned landscape adds value to any piece of property.

It’s too easy these days to live almost exclusively in a climate-controlled, electronic world. Your

days are spent going from air-condi-tioned house to car to workplace, with your ear glued to a cell phone or your fingers typing away on your personal digital assistant in between. But as people try to re-connect with nature, a new trend in home design—bringing the indoors outside—is emerging.

Many new and remodeled homes are blurring the lines between indoor and outdoor spaces. If you’re thinking about building or remodeling to en-hance the outdoor spaces at your home, here are a few of the latest outdoor living trends:

Fire elements. These can take the form of fireplaces or fire pits, or be as simple as a freestanding clay chimenea. Wood-burning elements are the most common, but they can also be outfitted to burn gas or a gel. Each has its own advantages or disadvantages with cost, maintenance, and other considerations such as smell or the crackling sound commonly associated with wood fires. Fire pits can be portable or built-in, and are often made with materials such as copper, iron or stone. Some feature colored, decorative glass pieces laid out in designs that reflect the flames.

Beds. Forget about hammocks or folding lawn chairs! Today, it’s all about ultimate comfort. Outdoor beds

have been seen on the pool decks of chic hotels in hip cities like Miami and Los Angeles for years. Designed for lounging or even napping, they come in a variety of sizes, generally have a futon-style mattress, and some have ad-justable backrests. They are covered in weatherproof fabric, and matching your color scheme is easy with coordinating throw pillows.

Showers. Formerly seen just at beach houses and used strictly for re-moving sand, outdoor showers are now found in multi-million dollar penthous-es, apartment rooftops and suburban neighborhoods for everyday use. They incorporate natural elements such as stone, bamboo and plants, and are

strategically designed to provide privacy, yet allow the user to enjoy the view and the feeling of showering in nature.

Having inviting outdoor living spac-es in your home will help when it’s time to sell, too. In the National Association of Home Builders’ Consumer Prefer-ences Surveys for both 2004 and 2007, more than three-quarters of respon-dents said having a patio, front porch or deck on their home was “desirable” or “essential.” And in 2007, 62 percent wanted an outdoor fireplace or fire pit, a category that wasn’t even an option in the 2004 survey.

So gather your friends around the fire pit, take an afternoon nap on your outdoor bed, get ready for work with a refreshing backyard shower, or, check out “Indoors Out” on the DIY Network for more ideas on how to embrace the great outdoors without leaving your yard! As I was building the playhouses that were part of 2009’s show I had a thought... We are an

association of builders and suppli-ers, why am I the only one building a playhouse?

This thought stayed with me and with the help of the Home and Garden Show Committee evolved into “The First Annual SICBA Playhouse Com-petition.”

The SICBA membership was chal-lenged and as usual responded in force. Six teams came forward to donate their creativity, time, knowledge and materi-als. They partnered with a local charity of their choosing to be the recipient of their generosity and the competition was on.

The Playhouse Teams are: • BLOCK HEADSBuilt By MHE International LLC & Hagge Design Associates Inc.Charity partner: Josephine Sunset Home

TiP: Dealing With Spring Pests

You may find unwanted visitors in your home when the spring sea-son arrives. That’s because small

animals, such as birds, field mice, or even bats may have taken up warm roosts in your home during the colder months. Come spring, when many animals reproduce, you could have a nest of wild pets on your hand. Take a few moments to shine a light into the eaves of your attic or in the corners of areas in your basement to look for animal nesting materials. Pay atten-tion to any noises you hear in the home that could be a sign of animal life. If you find any animals, be safe and call a professional exterminator or animal removal service to come in and take care of the problem. Some animals can be very protective of their nests.

Blue is one of the most sought after colors in the flower border and if you wait too long once

the growing season arrives it will be pink or orange for you. One of the best sources of this treasured color lies with salvias like Victoria Blue, the All America Selections- winning Strata and Evolution, as well as the new Cathedral Deep Blue and Velocity Blue.Though you may be buried under a blanket of snow, now is the time to be thinking about how you’ll incorporate them into your garden.

These salvias are also important in that they also provide a spiky texture rising above the imaginary horizon-tal plane creating excitement in the garden.

Botanically speaking, these are all Salvia farinacea and known com-monly as mealy-cup sage. Though that is not such a romantic name these are summer-long performers treasured as annuals over much of the country. Those living in warmer areas zone 8 and higher will find them to be hardy perennials. Even in zone 7 they are often found to return come spring if drainage is exceptional especially dur-ing the winter.

To maximize your blooming poten-tial select a site in full sun. Make your soil fertile by incorporating three to four inches of organic matter like com-post peat or humus. These plants will reach from 18 to 36 inches in height de-pending on variety and length of grow-ing season. They will spread somewhat so space 12 to 15 inches apart.

They most often are sold in six-inch sized containers. Plant at the same depth they are growing in the con-tainer. A wide hole with loose fertile soil will let the roots to expand quickly allowing them to get acclimated to your garden.

This wonderful group of plants has the potential of putting on a dazzling show until frost arrives if they old flowers are kept removed. In late sum-mer they can be cut back, which will enhance the bushiness and allow them to put on a show for fall.

The mealy-cup sage is native to Texas and Mexico and is fairly drought tolerant. Do pay attention during pro-longed dry spells, watering deeply but infrequently. Start feeding with light applications of slow-released fertilizer about every six to eight weeks with the emergence of spring growth

To cause the most attention grab-bing display in your landscape choose their opposite or complementary color orange or yellow.

Let salvias provide that treasured blue color
