NORTH ATLANTA HOME SHOW – GRAND PRIZE!

SABER CAST 500 LThis full-sized grill is a great value, loaded with fea-

tures that make outdoor cooking easier, with better tasting results.

Prize provided by American Casual Living American Casual Living, is conveniently located across

from the Mall of Georgia in Buford, Georgia.  Their spacious 25,000 square foot showroom brings to life the very finest outdoor/casual fur-

nishings and accessories available. Their friendly, knowledgeable staff combines over 50 years of experience with thoughtful creativity and focused personal atten-tion to help you create comfortable, inviting outdoor living areas.

North Atlanta Home Show Grand Prize - Open to US residents 18+. No pur-chase necessary, void where prohibited. Entry forms available in the lobby during show hours. Winner will be drawn at 5pm on Sunday February 21, 2016. Limit one entry per person per day.

Imagine row upon row of lush, flow-ering plants, a large expanse of rolling green lawn and someone to maintain it all. It’s a nice picture for a magazine cov-er, but not a practical thought for most homeowners, among them millions of Americans who would like to garden, but are limited because of aging or disability.

Gardening remains one of the top ten most popular hobbies in the United States and its one of the top two or three leisure activities among seniors because of the exercise it provides, resulting in positive health benefits and a reduced risk of many chronic diseases. It has also proved therapeutic for those who live with some temporary or permanent physical disability.

Whether you fit into one of these cat-egories or are a caregiver, it’s a good time to consider what can be done to break down barriers and make gardens more manageable.

Former HGTV host Joe Washington will talk about adapting your environ-

ment to suit your gardening needs at the North Atlanta Home Show, Infinite En-ergy Center-Friday, February 19th at 2pm and Saturday, February 20th at 1pm. Joe’s presentation will feature techniques, tools and resources to help your gar-dening experience remain enjoyable for many years to come. One solution does not fit every individual and Washington’s presentation will provide some ideas to suit individual needs.

Adaptive Gardening-What to Do When Your Physical Abilities Change

By Jay Kim & Mark Ash Tailored Living serving Gwinnett & North Georgia

With spring in the air, thoughts turn to renewal, refreshing and reorganizing. Time to relinquish the constraints of winter and open the windows to let warmth and sun-shine in! Bring back the bright colored throw pillows, swap out those cozy flannel sheets for cool, crisp bed linens. Stock the pantry with your family’s favorite outdoor drinks and treats. Open up the garage and…

Whoa! Are your Spidey senses tingling? Not because you have to run out and save the world, but because you KNOW spiders are lurking in that jumble of a garage after a long winter’s nap! During the cold of winter it was easy to “drop and run” when putting things in the garage and now sorting it all out will be quite the daunting task.

How about doing something this spring that will ensure you never have to venture into such a scary place again?

A GARAGE FOR ALL SEASONSGarages do get a bad rap. They are

probably the biggest room in your home, yet they generally receive less attention to space planning and organization than any other. Yes, they house vehicles that take up a lot of floor space, but have you considered the walls and all that lovely potential stor-age space? At Tailored Living®, we can help you bring your garage under control so that you’ll have an organized space that caters to the needs of your family no matter the season. You truly can have storage and cars in the same garage, and do it beautifully.

GARAGE STORAGE CABINETS, YOUR FIRST LINE OF DEFENSE AGAINST CHAOS

Garage storage cabinets use all available space by going up. Capturing unused verti-

cal space with floor-to-ceiling cabinets will get everything up off the floor and behind closed doors so clutter is no longer an issue. Design options are limitless. With adjustable shelves you can configure your cabinets to accommodate whatever you need to store.

In this example (above), having acces-sible storage right by the connecting door makes it easy for all family members to maintain their own day-to-day stuff, whether it be sporting equipment, school bags or a place to shed their shoes before entering the house.

The “half cabinets” that snuggle up to the car and capture otherwise overlooked stor-age space are ideal for seldom-used items and seasonal storage like holiday decora-tions and pool or beach accessories. You can even place larger items or bins on top for ad-ditional storage.

CUSTOMIZED WORK OR HOBBY AREAS TO MAKE LIFE MORE FUN

Combining garage cabinets with counter-tops creates specialty work areas for projects and hobbies. Cabinets and wall organization systems like Gridwall® (pictured) keep all your tools and necessities at hand whether it’s for a handyman station, a garden center, pet grooming, laundry central or a crafts and wrapping area. You can customize with bas-kets, hooks and shelves depending on what you need to store.

A custom-designed laundry center in the garage may just make your day! Pull-out hampers in lower cabinets keep dirty clothes out of sight until time to wash. Overhead cabinets store soap, bleach, stain removers, dryer sheets, lingerie bags and everything

else you could need for laundry day close at hand. The extended countertop provides plenty of room for sorting and folding laun-dry. Enclosed cabinets discourage dust, dirt and uninvited guests so the area is easy to maintain and keep clean. Adding a stand-ing clothes rack or retractable valet rods can provide hanging space, almost like an extra helping hand.

WALL STORAGE SYSTEMS AND OPEN STORAGE OPTIONS CAPTURE VALUABLE SPACE

Tailored Living guarantees to maximize your garage storage space, making room for your cars as well as what you need to store. Utilizing garage cabinets, overhead storage racks and wall-hung storage systems allows storage around doorways, windows, water heaters, electrical panels, in funky corners and under sloped ceilings. These specialty storage systems conform to the space you have available.

Wherever cabinets are inconvenient, wall-hung storage systems can accommo-date small to large items with specialty hooks. Our Gridwall and Slatwall® systems keep clutter off the floor and organize tools, sports equipment, garden implements and more. You can organize by category and have everything stored in plain sight. No more losing rackets, balls or bike acces-sories when it’s time to play, or misplacing necessary tools when it’s time to work.

Here the Slatwall system covers the wall, but in the laundry image, it’s used over the countertop in a small area. Easily

customizable to fit any space, you can install wall stor-age anywhere. Tall items like rakes, shovels and skis

can neatly tuck into spaces that are too nar-row to accommodate cabinets.

THE ULTIMATE GARAGE, FLOOR TO CEILING

As the final, perfecting touch, new ga-rage flooring will truly give you the ulti-mate garage. A finished floor will keep your garage cleaner and, with your fabulous storage cabinets, create a fully-functional, wonder-to-behold garage showplace. Pre-mierOne® floor coatings provide a high-gloss, industrial-tough hybrid polymer finish in a wide range of colors and styles, from solids to elegant decorative chip com-binations. Designed to withstand high traf-fic and heavy use, your PremierOne floor will stay beautiful for years to come.

In case you didn’t notice in all these images, with planned storage and no piles of clutter in a garage, there’s very little op-portunity for spiders or other unwelcomed creatures to move in. From the finished floor to the tallest cabinets, cleaning is easy. You’ll be able to take command of your space, all year round, come rain or shine.

If spring cleaning at your house includes the dreaded garage, a Tailored Living de-signer can help you create a garage you’ll love. Don’t wait, call today. Call 1-800-800-0505 or 678-835-9270, or go online to www.TailoredLiving.com to set up your free in-home consultation today. Be sure to visit us at the North Atlanta Home Show – Infi-nite Energy Center – February 19-21, 2016.

It is projected by 2020 the Home Automation industry will reach $12.81 billion. Sooner than later, the Smart Home will become an everyday operating system in your home! Just think about what some of the naysayers said of the computer: “There is no reason anyone would want a comput-er in their home.” -- Ken Olson, president, chair-man and founder of Digital Equipment Corp., 1977. Really? The energy and security benefits of a Smart Home provides huge savings and conve-nience that in today’s world are just too valuable not to incorporate into your home.

In the past, one could spend tens of thou-sands of dollars on a system and many times never really get all the functions they wanted. However, today the Smart Home is affordable and easy to use and program. Major corporations are diversifying their brands to include home au-tomation products which leads to confusion and hesitation from the consumer as they aggressively compete for your market share.

But here at Reliable, we are here to break through all the clutter and provide our custom-ers with the right Smart Home solutions. Start-ing with all of your heating and cooling systems in your home, Reliable is able to bridge your systems into the Internet and will allow a user to change temperatures, monitor costs, check for proper operation along with a myriad of other fea-tures pertaining to their comfort systems.

But what about all the other devices in your home you ask? Lights, security cameras, smoke detectors and locks? You name it. You want to be able to control them all under the same re-mote control or App so to speak and allow you to monitor and adjust many different appliances and systems in and outside your home from any computer, tablet or cellular phone. The answer is a phone call away at Reliable.

And to sweeten the pot, Reliable has taken Home Automation to a higher level with the in-troduction of ComfortGuard. Reliable is the ex-clusive contractor in Georgia to offer the Comfort-Guard system!

ComfortGuard, a new innovative product which can reduce heating and cooling bills, pre-vent surprise breakdowns and ensure a system is operating at maximum efficiency.

ComfortGuard is a suite of diagnostic sensors that monitor the performance of your heating and cooling system. Similar to a feature found on au-tomobiles, ComfortGuard is your check-engine light for your heating and cooling system.

Reliable Heating & Air monitors your system’s

performance and provides you a monthly report

showing how efficiently your system is running.

You can now have peace-of-mind knowing that

ComfortGuard is ensuring your heating and cool-

ing system is trouble free 24/7.

Which deck materials are right for your deck? Which material is best, or lasts the longest? Which one requires the least maintenance? Which one costs the most or the least? Choose wrongly, and you may have just spent a lot of money on a product you aren't happy with and one you will likely be stuck with for quite some time.

There really is no single answer to some ques-tions about deck materials. Your specific situation has considerations that others may not have, so your needs will be different. Let's look at the most com-mon options so you can make an informed and confi-dent decision that you will be happy and comfortable with for years to come.

3 of the most common materials used for decks around Atlanta are; wood, capped composite and PVC. We'll look at them individually so you can decide what material is best for your deck and your wallet.

WOOD DECK MATERIALSWood is by far the most common option used for

deck materials. Approximately 85 percent of single family homes have some sort of deck. A very high per-centage of those are made of wood and most wood decks are treated pine.

STANDARD PRESSURE TREATED PINEStandard pressure treated pine is easy to cut,

nail, screw, and work with in general. On the down side, it doesn't last as long as most of the other prod-ucts available and requires much more maintenance. With proper care however, you should get 10 to 15 years of good service from a treated lumber deck. Yes, you will need to clean, sand and refinish it every other year or so. And there are always the splinters, cracks, warps, and general wearing out over time. It's always best to look at cost issues over time, rather than just the initial cost.

Estimates vary, but when the cost of mainte-nance is factored in, the cost of treated pine usually catches up with more expensive woods in 5 to 8 years. Of course, if you need to keep the initial cost low, the cost over 8 years isn't what is important at that time. Let's look at some of the other commonly used and available wood species.

KDAT PRESSURE TREATED WOODKDAT (kiln dried after treatment) wood, provides

many advantages that make it a popular choice for homeowners who prefer the natural beauty and char-acter of real wood for their outdoor projects. In fact, professional deck builders prefer KDAT over standard pressure treated material mainly for the appearance and long lasting quality you get with KDAT wood.

What makes KDAT different? Following pres-sure treatment, KDAT products are placed in a large oven, or kiln, where excess moisture is removed and the wood is returned to its original moisture content. Because the kiln offers a controlled environment and the wood is dried evenly, this process helps minimize

the natural tendency of freshly treated wood to shrink, cup and warp.

With a stiffer and more di-mensionally stable product, you'll minimize after- installation issues that occur when regu-lar pressure treated wood dries naturally. It also means you're free to finish your project any way you see fit without having to wait, since it is ready to paint, stain or seal immediately. By comparison, freshly treated wood may take weeks or months to dry naturally enough to be finished. Other factors that may or may not be important to you is; KDAT wood weighs less than freshly treated lumber, it offers more strength, it is easier to handle, cut and install and has an increased holding power, not to mention the obvious advantages of pressure treated material in that, it has a natural protection against rot, fungal decay and termite attack.

CEDARCedar is a fine choice for deck material. Grade

is important. "Clear" is the best grade for your deck. Why, you ask, does it matter which part of the tree the lumber comes from? The center, or heart, of the tree contains more of the resins that make these spe-cies less susceptible to the damaging effects of the weather. The growth rings are closer together, giving the wood a tighter grain – which leads to fewer ten-dencies to warp. This wood is also more resistant to insects and less likely to rot. There are several variet-ies of cedar, with colors ranging from reds to yellows. The lighter colored species stain beautifully. Most ce-dars will easily last 20 years.

IPE Ipe (pronounced ee-pay) is a great wood for deck

building. It has some characteristics that are unique among these high end deck materials. Ipe wood is extremely durable and is almost impossible to make warp, cup, twist OR splinter. There is no need to seal Ipe, except on the ends of the boards where it is cut. It will weather to a silvery gray color, but will not splin-ter and will remain smooth. It is a very slow growing

tree, hence the growth rings are close together and it is extremely dense. That density produces its good qualities, but it also makes it very hard and very heavy. So it is hard to cut and hard to work with in general. If Ipe fits in your budget, you will have a beautiful, very low maintenance deck for 30 years or more.

Any of these woods, includ-ing the lowly pressure treated pine, can be used to build a beautiful, long lasting deck that will serve you well for years. The differences are in the life of the wood, the maintenance requirements, how it ages and weathers, and the appearance characteristics of the particular species. Cost is reflected in how well the particular decking materials respond to each of those factors.

CAPPED COMPOSITE DECK MATERIALS

Capped composite decking is basically compos-ite decking that has been wrapped in a thin veneer of PVC-like material to prevent outside elements from feeding off the wood particles within the composite. Capped composite boards are resistant to mold, mil-dew and fading just like PVC boards, but, because they are almost entirely composite, they are much less expensive than PVC decking.

Currently, the three main companies offering capped composite decking are Fiberon, TimberTech, and Trex. Each capped composite product from these manufacturers is slightly different and offers its own unique benefits as well as warranty differences so be sure to use a reputable source if you choose this op-tion.

Typically, treated yellow pine or KDAT wood is used for the support structure and capped composite components are used for the decking and the rails. The boards are all consistent in size and appearance. Most capped composite boards also have a built-in groove to the sides of the deck boards which allows you to use a hidden fastening system to secure it to the structure so you can have a clean surface instead of seeing screw holes. If capped composite decking fits your budget and you decide on it, you should be

happy with it for many years to come.

PVC DECK MATERIALS PVC deck materials are similar to capped com-

posite, but there is no wood - they are pure PVC. These materials typically cost more than capped composite while keeping many of the same character-istics - but not all. Like capped composite, they offer a very consistent, uniform appearance. They are com-pletely impervious to insects and to rot. PVC decking requires little maintenance, similar to capped com-posite materials. It offers little in the way of structural strength, so proper support is critical. PVC also comes in different colors and some even have a texture that resembles woodgrain. If you decide on a PVC decking product, you will certainly get your years of service out of PVC deck materials.

In general, there are four factors to consider when making a decision about what to use for your deck materials:

1. The product itself. Does it fit in your budget? Is it readily available in your area? Will it look right with your house?

2. The Installation. If you choose a specialty product, you may need a specialty installer. Does the cost of installation push the cost up more than you expected?

3. The Maintenance. How often will your deck need maintenance? How extensive is the process. Are you willing and able to do it yourself? How much will it cost to hire someone to do it for you?

4. The Longevity. How many years will it be before the deck needs to be replaced? Will you still be in the house? How might that affect resale?

Plug these factors into your thought process as you plan for your deck or outdoor living area. Re-member to figure the cost over time, not just initially. A nicely designed, well maintained and professionally built deck will not only give you and your family years of enjoyment, it can add significantly to the value of your home.

Visit PMC Building Materials either in Marietta (PMC West) at 2009 Dorsey Rd, Marietta, GA 30066 or Lawrenceville (PMC East) at 175 Buford Dr (Hwy 20), Lawrenceville, GA 30046 to see one of our deck cen-ters, get a listing of professional deck installers, and learn about all of the products available to you. How many of us made those New Year’s resolu-tions to get fit? When you’re thinking about getting your body in shape, take a minute to think about doing the same for your house. And just like personal fitness, home energy fitness doesn’t have to be difficult, time consuming or expensive – you just have to have a plan and get moving!

Here are some low-cost and no-cost ideas to make sure your home uses your energy resources wisely:

HVACRemember, about half of your electric bill goes to

heating or cooling the air inside your home.• Use the heat of the sun in winter to help warm

your home by opening drapes and tilting blinds downward; in summer, do just the reverse to help keep your home cool.

• Seal cooling and heating ducts with mastic seal-ant to prevent the loss of warm air in the winter or cool air in the summer.

• For energy saving, we recommend setting the thermostat to 68 degrees in winter.

• Install a programmable thermostat and set it to adjust the temperature inside just before you are set to arrive home. *Make sure the thermo-stat is heat pump compatible or it will cause bills to increase.

• Replace filters regularly, usually every 1-2 months.

• Be sure registers are free from furniture and oth-er obstructions. (Blocking airflow is like forcing your heat pump to run a marathon with a mask on.)

**** Use the fireplace sparingly. It draws the home’s heated air up the chimney. Make sure the damp-er is closed when not in use. *******

WATER HEATINGDepending on the number people bathing and your

laundry demands, water heating accounts for 15-25% of your energy bill.

• Set the thermostat to 120-130. (Be sure to turn off the breaker for the water heater before ad-justing the temperature.)

• Check for leaks. A faucet dripping hot water can add up over a period of time.

• Wash clothes in cold water, or use warm water with a cold rinse cycle.

• Run full loads in the washing machine and dish-washer.

LIGHTINGReplacing your five most frequently used light fix-

tures or the bulbs in them with ENERGY STAR qualified lights can save $70 a year in energy costs.

• Replace incandescent bulbs with CFL or LED bulbs to save energy.

• Run ceiling fans clockwise on low during the winter to circulate warm air and run the heat pump less.

• Install inexpensive foam gaskets behind light switches on exterior walls to prevent air leaks.

• Install outdoor solar lights.

DOORS AND WINDOWS• Effectively prepare doors and windows to re-

duce heating (and cooling) bills and increase the comfort inside your home.

• Use low VOC caulk and weather stripping around windows and doors to reduce air infiltration.

• Install door sweeps and door shoe gaskets to further control heat loss and gain.

*******If you have to replace windows, install En-ergy STAR certified windows to keep hot air out in the summer and prevent warm air from escaping during winter. *******

SEALING AND INSULATIONThe average home has air leakage equal to a two-

square-foot hole – that’s like leaving a medium-sized window open 24-hours a day.

• Check your ductwork for places where seals have come loose; repair them with mastic, a thick paste, or mastic tape, both available at home improvement and hardware stores.

• Make sure you have adequate insulation, 10-14 inches deep in the attic, to prevent unwanted heat loss or gain.

• Insulate hot water pipes. • Install foam gaskets behind electric outlets and

switch plate covers on exterior walls. *******Set the water heater thermostat no higher

than 120 degrees Fahrenheit; 140 degrees Fahrenheit if your dishwasher doesn’t have a heating element. ********

Home trends continuously evolve, and one of the hottest trends for home owners now is outdoor living. Gone are the days of the standard 8x10 foot concrete patio, in fact, outdoor living spaces including out-door kitchens are now consistently one of the top 3 requests that homeowners are asking for in new homes as well as remodel-ing projects.

Few things are as much fun as a summer barbecue and the smell of the grill cook-ing in the back yard by the pool, but in the southeast we have the advantage of having cooperative outdoor living weather for the large majority of the year. It’s hard not to have a good time when you’re enjoying the outdoors with family and friends beside the pool or fireplace and have a great meal to enjoy – but it’s not so much fun if you are constantly running back and forth between the grill and the inside kitchen with ingredi-ents, condiments, drinks, etc.

A few years ago, the outdoor kitchen wasn’t much more than a concept, but to-day, the outdoor kitchen is the new indoor kitchen. Manufacturers of quality products offer complete kitchen concepts including grills, warming drawers, sinks, refrigera-tion, kegorators, etc. What is important to determine are the components that you would need for your family’s lifestyle. Many

outdoor living environments have a fire and water feature – whether it be a fireplace or fire pit, a pool or waterfall. When it comes to the kitchen, think of it as a separate entity from what is inside – many customers re-gret not including refrigeration and cleaning zones, as well as serving or libation zones as they enjoy in their indoor space.

These are the top components to con-sider if you are planning an outdoor living space:

• Outdoor grill (may choose both gas and an outdoor smoker like a Ka-mado)

• Refrigeration (high quality with high BTUs to sustain in heat of summer)

• Power burner (for low country boil or fried turkey)

• Warming drawers• Sink/Clean up product• Dry sealed storage (utensils, etc)• Fire Feature• Water Feature• Landscape lighting to enhance en-

vironmentMost importantly, consult a professional

with experience that can help you achieve your dream and provide a space that you and your family will enjoy for years to come. A properly planned and constructed space will add not only enjoyment to your lives but value to your home as well.

The Dream: You are entertaining

friends in your beautifully designed

yet comfortable home. Each room

is tasteful and reflects your and your

family’s lifestyle. Your home makes

you smile and feel at peace. (And

since this is a dream you’re also twen-

ty pounds thinner and you’re having a

good hair day.)

The Reality: You’ve drooled on the

pages of every decorating magazine in

the grocery store checkout line. You’ve

pinned hundreds of gorgeous rooms.

You’ve watched so many reruns of

design shows that you’ve memorized

the dialog. But…you’ve done noth-

ing. For years. Because you just can’t

figure it out. Your house is a mish-

mash of dated oak furniture sets from

the 80’s, hand-me-downs that don’t

fit right anywhere and slightly tacky

tchotchkes you picked up on clearance

at Tuesday Morning. But then, you

finally do something! As cheaply as

possible. And it’s wrong. You wasted

your money and your house doesn’t

look much better than it did to begin

with. (Who knew that five different

wood tones in one bedroom wasn’t a

great idea and that high-water pleated

drapes are about as attractive as high-

water pleated jeans.) Ugh. So it’s back

to pinning photos and dreaming.

You know what you need, don’t

you? You need a designer. A designer

will save you time and money over the

course of a project, eliminating errors

and frustrations. Sure, it’s an invest-

ment, but so is your home. Do it now

and enjoy it!

But can you use a designer and up-

date without spending a fortune? Yes,

you can! Most of my clients are just

like you. They usually have a fairly tra-

ditional style but they certainly don’t

sit around sipping tea in the parlor

with guests. They’re much more re-

laxed and modern. So, how do we up-

date their traditional style

and make it work? We use

the same concepts we use

when updating our ward-

robes!

Here’s my advice for ev-

ery single client struggling

with this dilemma:

• If you don’t like it, find a new home for it. When you clean your closet,

you get rid of pieces that

are worn, don’t fit, or don’t

suit your style. So do that

with your furniture, too.

It’s not worth holding on to

that coffee table your Great

Aunt Sophia gave you just

because she might come by

once every three years and

ask you where it is. Your home is your

own and you should feel happy and

comfortable in it.

• If you love it, keep it. I have

an antique, fully sequined

butterfly top that is mostly

ridiculous but I love it. I

pair it with simple, toned

down pieces to balance it.

This same principle applies

to interiors. If you have a

treasured heirloom or over

the top piece that doesn’t

go with your Room & Board

sofa, it can still work. You

just need balance and a

little repetition to tie it in.

Often times people feel the

need to apologize for older

pieces in their home that

they love. But these pieces

give your home personality! A whole

room of furnishings plucked out of

a furniture store and plopped down

into your house looks cold and bor-

ing. (I’ll bet someone you know has a

room like this.) A designer can help

you make even the wildest pieces look

custom made for your home.

• Make bold choices in the cheapest places. When you need a

new black suit or little black dress, you

don’t just go to Old Navy, right? You

don’t have to go all out and buy Prada,

but you do want quality—and quality

costs a little more. You can then ac-

cessorize with an eye-catching piece

of costume jewelry from the discount

store and your outfit will look great!

familiar?Does this sound

sooner. This equals more money out

of your pocket. Quality and classic

style last!

• Think of your home as a piece of art. A designer understands how to

keep in mind the key elements of beau-

tiful art: rhythm, pattern, texture, color,

proportion, and balance. With clothing

fashions or room designs, these ele-

ments will create a pulled-together look

if done correctly.

Hiring a talented designer will give

you the confidence to make style deci-

sions for your home and you’ll learn a lot

in the process, too. Stay true to yourself

and what you want in your space, and

you’ll be thrilled with the results of your

comfortable, beautiful, uniquely “you”

home.
