February 2015 HOME, GARDEN AND LANDSCAPE SHOW

    By Melinda Myers

It’s hard to believe, but soon plantswill be moving into the garden centerand dreams of a beautiful and productivegarden will be filling your head. Manygardeners however find that when itcomes to putting plans down on paper,

they freeze. Perhaps just a little help isneeded.

To begin, take a look at your favoriterecipes and make a list of the ingredientsyou would like to grow. Include vegeta-bles and herbs you use often, those thatare cheaper to grow than to buy, andthose that taste best fresh from the gar-den. Tomatoes, peppers, cilantro are justa few that come to mind.

Be sure to involve your family in thisprocess. After all, if they help plan thegarden, they may be more inclined tohelp weed, water and harvest it. But evenif they don’t end up lending a hand, theywill be much more likely to clean their

plates when you make their favorite dish-es with those homegrown fresh-from-the-garden vegetables.

Once you have your list of vegetablesand herbs, it’s time to design your gar-den. Don’t let this step intimidate you. There are some terrific online tools, likebonnieplants.com, that provide plantingplans to make this much easier for both

new and experienced gardeners. Forexample, in just one small space (4 feetby 4 feet), Bonnie Plants’ HomemadeSalsa garden plan allows gardeners togrow two tomato or tomatillo plants incages in one row, one jalapeno pepperand one red bell pepper in cages in thenext row, and cilantro and onions in the

third row. If you need more produce foryour favorite recipes, just add another 4x 4 section.

Or visit gardeners.com to plan yourown garden. Their kitchen and gardenplanner (located under learn and share)allows you to design your own garden. And once planned you will have yourown planting guide and know how manyplants or seeds are needed to grow thegarden you desire.

Boost your garden’s productivity evenfurther with proper care and some space-saving techniques:

    • Water plants thoroughly wheneverthe top few inches of soil is crumbly and

just starting to dry. Also, be sure to mulchby covering the soil surface with a layerof shredded leaves, evergreen needles,or weed-free straw. Mulching helps con-serve moisture, suppress weeds, andimprove the soil over time.

    • Maximize every square foot bygrowing tomatoes and peppers in cages. In addition, train cucumbers and other

vining plants up a trellis. Goingvertical leaves more room to plantyour other favorite herbs and veg-etables.

    • Save even more space bygrowing fast-maturing vegetableslike lettuce in between vegetableslike tomatoes that take much

longer to begin producing. Thisstrategy, known as interplanting, allows you to grow two types ofvegetables in one space. By thetime the tomato plants becomelarge and start to shade out thegreens, the lettuce will be doneproducing. Not only does thissave space, but it also reduces thenumber of weeds.

Now it’s time to start mappingout your plans for the growingseason ahead.

And be sure to bring you gar-dening questions and stop by and visitme Sunday, March 1 between 10 a.m.

and 1 p.m. at the 2015 Home, Gardenand Landscape Show at the WaukeshaExpo Center for Ask the Expert.

5 essential questions to abefore hiring a contracto

It’s the contractor you pick thatmakes — or breaks — your remodelingproject. Finding the right contractor foryour job will determine the quality andtimeliness of the work, and the amountof emotional and financial stress you’ll

have to deal with.To make sure you’re getting the best

work from a contractor, here are fivequestions to ask the candidates.

Tip: Listen for how prospective con-tractors answer your questions.Difficulty communicating now meansdifficulty communicating on the joblater.1. Would you please itemize your bid?

Many contractors prefer to give youa single, bottom-line price for your proj-ect, but this puts you in the dark aboutwhat they’re charging for each aspectof the job. __For example, if the origi-nal plan calls for wainscot in your bath-

room, but you decide not to install it,how much should you be credited foreliminating that work? With a singlebottom-line price, you have no way toknow.

If you get an itemized bid, it’ll showthe costs for all of the various elementsof the job, including:• Demolition and hauling trash• Framing and finish carpentry• Plumbing• Electrical work• HVAC• Tiling or other floor covering instal-lations• Lighting fixtures• Drywall and painting

That makes it easier to compare dif-ferent contractors’ prices. If you needto cut the project costs, you can easilyfigure your options. Plus, an itemizedbid becomes valuable documentationabout the scope of your project, whichmay eliminate disputes later.Contractors shouldn’t give you a hardtime about itemizing their bids. If theyresist, it’s a red flag for sure.2. Is your bid an estimate or a fixedprice?

Some contractors treat their bids asestimates, meaning bills could wind up

being higher in the end. Be sure torequest a fixed price bid instead. If a contractor says he can’t offer a

fixed price because there are too manyunknowns about the job, then try toeliminate the unknowns. For example, have him open up a wall or examine acrawl space.

If you can’t resolve the unknowns, have the project specs describe onlywhat he expects to do. If additionalwork is needed, you can do a changeorder — a written mini-bid for newwork.

    3. How long have you beenbusiness in this town?

A contractor who’s been plytrade locally for five or 10 yearestablished network of subconand suppliers in the area and

reputation to uphold. That maka safer bet than a contractoeither new to the business or pto commute to your job from 5away.

Ask for:• A business card with a address — not a P.O. box.• References from one or twoearliest clients. This’ll help you vhasn’t just recently hung his shin4. Who are your main supplier

Contractors are networked wsuppliers. You can tap into infoon your contractor’s reliabillevel of quality by talking to pro

of:• Tile shops• Kitchen and bath showrooms• Lumber yards• The pro desk at your favoritimprovement center

Ask about a contractor’s proal reputation, whether he has leof unhappy customers in his whe’s reliable about paying hisand whether he’s someone youto hire.

Your contractor should haqualms about telling you wherehis materials if he’s an upstandtomer.5. I’d like to meet the job forecan you take me to a project hning?

Many contractors don’t aswing hammers. They spend thebidding new work and managivarious jobs and workers. Thathe job foreman — the one whoing on your project every damost important member of your

crews, since you’re more likelyhim if you see his A Team.If your contractor says he’ll

ning the job himself, ask whethbe there every day. He’ll wantyou a positive response — soyou can hold him to later on.Read more:http://www.houselogic.com/hadvice/contracting/five-essentitions-ask-before-hiring-contractor/#ixzz3Sg86SPSYFollow us: @HouseLogic on TwHouseLogic on Facebook
