NEWS SUPPLEMENT Australian VETERINARY JOURNAL Setting New Year resolutions T here is something about December that encourages us to finish all our projects, tidy up outstanding tasks and prepare for a time of fellowship and relaxation with our colleagues, families and friends. We also plan for the New Year, setting new goals and resolu- tions. The participants in the Workshop for the 1998 Presidents of AVA Divisions and Special Interest Groups Workshop went through a similar process last month as they prepared themselves for their new roles and responsibilities. New ways of organis- ing meetings were discussed, new skills to build achieving teams were practiced and new knowledge was acquired in the 2-day workshop. Planning also commenced for the AVA in 1998 by setting new strategies for each of the AVA’s objectives. Those objectives are: To monitor the profession’s needs and represent and promote those interests To monitor the individual needs of members and provide high quality resources to meet them within available resources To provide expert resources to advise, influence and promote the profession to governments To act as an advocate for the wel- fare of animals and promote their value in society To educate, inform and promote the profession to the public and mediate on behalf of the profession To develop long term partnerships with industry based on mutual benefits and objectives Promoting the veterinary profes- sion to the community is the empha- sis for 1998, using our existing pro- grams such as Pet PEP, Urban Animal Management Program and the AVA Animal Welfare Trust. Issues identi- fied by Helen Jones Fairnie that will affect the profession over the next 10 years will also be discussed at special- ly convened Division focus groups. Please contact your Division Office for more information. The Urban Animal Management Advisory Group also reviewed its plans for 1998 and beyond, at a strategic planing workshop before its Conference in Adelaide in November. Led by AVA Past President Michael Banyard, the Group developed new projects, plans and strategic alliances to encourage responsible pet owner- ship in urban areas. Veterinarians attending the Conference made a commitment to promote UAM con- cepts to their colleagues during the coming year. The meeting of the Australian and New Zealand Veterinary Council also made plans for 1998 at its November meeting. These include the identifica- tion of core competencies of universi- ty graduates and the expansion of the Council to include the Veterinary Nurses Council of Australia. The new Award for veterinary sur- geons in private practice will come into force in 1998. It will encourage veterinary practices to look at new ways and relationships. The good will which exists in the profession will assist in facilitating the meeting of the needs of both our employed and employee members. Setting New Year resolutions
