Our August visit to the Orchard Tea Room and Farm shop in Wisbech was very enjoyable.

Our first bit of luck was that in what turned out to be a wet week we had a warm dry evening. Sixteen of us were greeted by Jim who gave us a tour of the orchard having provided each of us with a bag to collect any windfalls we wanted.

During the tour we discovered how to differentiate between Bramley and Grenadier cooking apples, and Victoria and Burbank plums.

Help was also given on pruning fruit trees. After the stroll around the orchard we enjoyed our refreshments outside in the evening sun. This was not an eating evening but I’m sure many pies or crumbles were made over the next few days.

The meeting for September 21st is when we are welcoming Linda Jones the Senior Oncology Nurse at Addenbrookes. She will speak on breast cancer and the research being carried out We wish to open

our meeting to visitors who would like to hear more about this very important subject.

Michelle Taylor a Guide Dog for the Blind puppy walker is invited for October19th. Cliiff Carson an Environmental Officer from Middle Level will be with us on November 16th.

Then 21st December will see us finish the year with a Christmas Party. Yes! More eating and drinking.

Thank you to everyone who turned out on such wet day to support the Cycle event.

The event was well attended and hopefully enjoyed by all. Despite the rain coming right on cue at the start of the race. There are some great pictures on BenWick Facebook page - thank you to everyone for posting them. Sadly there was an accident at the start of the race thanks to an obstruction on the High Street which with a little bit of goodwill could have been avoided.

This year’s Scarecrow competition saw some great entries with many more scarecrows being entered Again some great pictures on BenWick Facebook page.

Adults1 Mark Eglen - Incredible Hulk 2 Emily Shepperson - Minion 3 Mrs Lindsay - Cat woman 1st prize was £25 donated by the Benwick Bugle, 2nd, £15 & 3rd £10 donated by the Parish Council.

During the month of July some of our members enjoyed two outings. The first one on Friday, 3rd was to The Brook at Soham to see a Variety Show. The second was on Wednesday, 15th July when eighteen members went on an afternoon mystery trip. The driver toured the fens before we arrived in Norfolk at the Tea Rooms in Castle Rising. After an enjoyable tea we carried on to Sandringham for an early evening visit to The Royal Stud

As we walked round the stables and saw the horses Abbi, our guide gave us an informative and interesting talk about the mares, stallions and their foals The weather was good so we also walked round the gardens. There was also a stop on the way home for a drink at The Coach and Horses. The meeting on Thursday, 6th August was a cheese and wine evening with a quiz. Many thanks to the ladies who prepared and served it. Dennis Clarke was the quiz master and did an excellent job.

The Harvest Festival is on Thursday,

FORGET-ME-NOTS3rd September when Mike Jones will conduct a short service. Members are requested to bring along produce to be auctioned for club funds.

David Palmer, the well known auctioneer will be coming to speak to us in October when the competition is any item beginning with the letter I.We are planning a day trip to Norwich (Open to all) on Wednesday, 25th November which includes a tour of the Van Dal shoe factory and a visit to their factory shop or just spend the day in Norwich. Anyone interested please contact me on 01354 677228.

New members and visitors always welcome at our meetings which are held at 6.30 pm in the village hall on the first Thursday of the month. •

At the start of 1914 the tension was building between nations and war was looking more and more inevitable.

The growing threat of war and media attention led to a surge in men enlisting in the UK in both the Regular Army and the recently formed Territorial Force. As part of this part-time volunteer army the local Cambridgeshire Regiment held a hugely successful recruiting week in January after which they were at full strength and even had a waiting list.

Amongst this keen and patriotic wave of new recruits were a group of men from the Benwick area. It had been decided that if enough men (twelve or more) could be found in the area a Drill Station would be set up in the village. This meant that the men would not have to travel to the Drill Hall in March every week to train.

By April the Benwick detachment was meeting for their weekly drill night in the village. Amongst these men were a group of friends, all local farm labourers, who as well as

BENWICK & THE CAMBRIDGESHIRE

REGIMENT

joining the Cambs together also made up a successful tug-of-war team, known as the ‘Benwick Chickens’. These eight men were all mobilised together at the outbreak of the war and their experiences during the war are a fascinating and moving story. Photographs of these men and their story was the subject of a recent article on our website and can be found at the link below.

Our website was launched in February this year and timed to mark the 100th anniversary of the Cambridgeshires leaving the UK to head off to the Western Front. The site is to honour these men and provide a central information hub for descendants, local historians, and those interested in the First World War to find out more about the ‘Cambs Terriers’.

As well as offering information on the origins of the regiment it also contains a month-by-month account of their activity during the

war, a guide to the badges and insignia worn, details of the decorations and medals earned, and in depth biographies of many of the men. There are regular updates and we will continue adding to the site especially around the anniversaries of key events.

We have many ongoing research projects and would love to hear from anyone with pictures, information or items relating to the Cambs. If people have any further questions please feel free to get in touch via the email address below.•

TOUR OF CAMBRIDGESHIRE

2016by Lyn Keppel-Spoor

The Parish Council have been notified by Fenland District Council, that the Tour of Cambridgeshire Cycle event is taking place on the 5th June 2016, this is an event that we have no control over but will try to work with the organisers, if possible, to lessen the impact on the village.

We do understand that residents have commitments that require them to enter and leave the village at weekends. So are giving you as much notice as possible to try to organise your commitments for that day. •

The Trustees of the Village Hall wish to thank the village community for the wonderful turn out at our BBQ and Fete which we held on Saturday 15th August 2015 which made it a very satisfying day for all.

We have learnt a lot from our efforts this year which makes us think that the Fair next year could be made bigger and better.

Again thanks to all for attending our first effort and if there are any further ideas please let any of the committee know of them so we can try to incorporate them in next years Fete and BBQ

Special thanks go to Boon Engineers on the corner of Lilyholt Road who made the BBQ for us and donated their work to the hall free of charge. It was greatly appreciated •

In the May issue I said my Dad was a prisoner of war. I can remember my Mum receiving a letter from the War Office to say he was missing. Now I was only three but I do recall what a sad time it was – Mum was crying and hugging me. However it was completely reversed when after the war Dad came home and was demobbed, an expression that referred to the soldiers who did come back.

This was a joyous day for the village as a photographer and reporter came from the Cambs Times to speak to Dad and put his photo in the paper. Jim Youles from Ramsey Road corner came home at the same time.

By now I was six but could not understand what all the fuss was about. When the soldiers were demobbed they were given a suit and an overcoat. Dad’s suit was a navy blue pin stripe and his overcoat a brown check. He also had his big heavy khaki army coat and the two coats came in very useful especially in 1947. This was a bitterly cold winter. The snow was

about four feet deep and the villagers swept the snow away from the footpaths so that we could walk to school. However it was so cold the overcoats were put on the beds to keep us warm even though we had blankets and eiderdowns No central heating then!

To help the ex soldiers get back into “civvie street” the council divided fields into acre plots so that they would get some money when the produce was sold. Alot of this land was at Chapel Farm and I can remember watching from the tap room window in The Five Alls to see the men riding by on their bikes with

a hoe or some other tool over their shoulders. Women would go too when the sugar beet was ready to be chopped out and singled. They wore big bonnets to protect them from the sun. There was a great community spirit in the village every one helped each other.

When Dad was away Jesse Green made me a swing, Herbie Fisher bought me a teddy bear and my best friend was Sheila Redhead (nee Sutton). Her granny helped Mum in the pub and Rose and Arthur her parents were very good to me. They lived down Skeifs Row when it was a row of houses. Sheila was the first

person I contacted when we decided to come back to Skeifs Row in Ben-wick. When we were children there were not many cars and Sheila and I were allowed to walk to the station to see the trains if we “kept out of the way”. Her grandad Bert Sutton was the station master though. My granny Richards and two of my uncles lived at The Homestead and next door the Tinkler family – Maud and Arthur and their four daughters, Joan, Joyce, Peggy and Dorothy whom I spent alot of time with.

After Dad returned I don’t ever remember him speaking about his

time as a prisoner but I do know he was in camp Stalag 17 and that he would never eat rice or baked beans. I believe these items were mainly on the menu for the prisoners.

It seems appropriate that I mention VE and VJ celebrations as we have just had the 70 year anniversaries of both VE and VJ days. There were parties in the street, bonfires, and dancing and singing at the top of the street in front of The Boot and Slipper.

Obviously I was too young to attend but I’m told that Benwick did celebrate in style with the rest of the country. •
