What to do if personal information is lost or stolen

Social Security NumberIf a company or organization that is responsible for exposing your personal i n f o r m a t i o n offers you free

credit monitoring, take advantage of it. Get your free credit reports from annualcreditreport.com. Check for any accounts or charges you don’t recognize.

Consider placing a credit freeze on your credit files at www.consumer.ftc.gov/articles/0497-credit-freeze-faqs. A credit freeze makes it harder for someone to open a new account in your name. If you place a credit freeze, be ready to take a few extra steps the next time you apply for a new credit card or cell phone – or any service that requires a credit check. If you decide not to place a credit freeze, at least consider placing a fraud alert on your credit files (info at above website). Try to file your taxes early — before a scammer can. Tax identity theft happens when someone uses your Social Security number to get a tax refund or a job. Respond right away to letters from the IRS.

Online Login or PasswordLog in to that account and change your password. If possible, also change your username. If you can’t log in, contact the company. Ask them how you can recover or shut down the account. If you use the same password anywhere else, change that, too. Is it a financial site, or is your credit card number stored? Check your account for any charges that you don’t recognize.

Bank account information, debit, or credit card numberContact your bank or credit card company to cancel your card/account and request a new one/open a new account. Change your PIN. Review your transactions regularly. Make sure no one misused your card. If you find fraudulent charges, call the fraud department and get them removed. If you have automatic payments set up, update them

with your new card number. Check your credit report at https://www.annualcreditreport.com/.

Driver’s license informationContact your nearest motor vehicles branch at www.usa.gov/motor-vehicle-services to report a lost or stolen driver’s license. The state might flag your license number in case someone else tries to use it, or they might suggest that you apply for a duplicate. Check your credit report at annualcreditreport.com.

Children’s personal informationGo to http://www.experian.com/; http://www.equifax.com/home/en_us; and http://www.transunion.com/ and follow the specific instruction to request credit report for a minor. Each bureau has specific instructions for requesting credit reports for minors. Generally, children under 18 years of age will not have a credit report. If a credit bureau has a credit report for your child, the credit bureau will send you a copy of the report. Use the instructions provided with the credit report to remove fraudulent accounts. Request a credit freeze for your child. Follow the instructions at each credit bureau’s website to place a credit freeze on your child’s credit file.

For more information on Identity Theft Prevention, Protection, and Recourse go to https://www.ftc.gov/, www.consumerfinance.gov, or contact the Financial Readiness Program Manager at [email protected].

Have you considered the Riley Guide?

Those seeking employment should

consider using

“The Riley Guide”.

This resource is an

excellent resource

that contains

valuable employment

information, along with other essential

employment and career related information. It is

intended to serve you in two unique ways:

1. It is a directory of employment and career

information sources and services on the

internet.

2. It provides instruction for job seekers and

recruiters on how to use the internet to their

best advantage

What the Riley Guide is not: The Riley Guide

is not a place to post job announcements nor

resumes. There are hundreds of places that will

do that for you when using the guide.

Why the Riley Guide looks like it does: The Riley

Guide is purposely simple with minimal graphics.

It is not flashy or incredibly visually attractive to

some, but it is usable by everyone.

Techniques to Consider for Identifying Potential Careers

Discover Your Desires

Examine your personal hobbies and interests as

a possible career path. Often working in an area

of personal desire can lead to meaningful and

fulfilling careers when combined with current

skills, knowledge, and abilities. The goal is to

identify some of your personal interests and

investigate them a little deeper. Once you have

identified that information, you can couple it

with other things you’ve learned about yourself

from previous sessions and can begin to apply

this knowledge to identify possible positions

that integrate all of these elements.

These potential careers may be outside of your

current pattern. As you progress through this

process you will soon identify possible career

opportunities, companies and industries that can

offer personal meaning. Almost everybody likes

to do something. Even the quirkiest codgers

have something in their life that can make them

smile. The intent is to discover ways to open

some doors and consider new areas that might

offer you a great work experience.

Although, not all individual desires are suited

to careers, these interests can provide a

great starting point for your direction. This

determination takes some investigation into

markets and potential jobs involving that desire.

Here are six questions you must ask yourself:

• Does this involve starting a business?

• Am I aware of what this will entail?

• Is this something I am well suited to do?

• Will I still enjoy my desire if I have to work

with it 24/7?

• Is it likely that people will pay me for this?

• Is there a demand for it in the market, or

could I demonstrate that demand?

If the answers to any of these questions point

to a dead-end for that desire becoming a career

path, then realize it is okay. There is nothing

wrong with maintaining a desire as a hobby and

getting paid to do something else that you enjoy.

Additional Techniques for Identifying Potential

Careers

Technique: Imagine yourself in the future.

Imagine yourself five, ten, and twenty-five

years from now. Dream big! Imagine your ideal

position, not what you realistically think you

might end up doing.

Technique: Write or tell someone what you

imagine. This may mean sitting down, picturing

a huge television screen in front of your eyes

and convincing yourself to create the TV show

of your life. Or, it might mean noticing the

daydreams that you tend to devalue. You may be

imagining the things that are the true desires of

your heart, and your purpose might be in those

wishes.

Technique: Another great idea is to develop a

mission statement for your life. List your core

values and what you want to contribute to the

world. What legacy do you want to leave behind?

What would you like to change? Are there people

you have served who are grateful for what you

did for them?

Technique: Think about your answer to this

question, “If you knew you could not fail, had the

resources you needed, and were supported by

your family, friends and community, what would

you do?”

For additional exploration on “Potential Careers”

some of your creative ideas. Who knows, this

venture or occupation!

Army Community Service Annual Recognition Program Recognizes USAG-Miami Employment Readiness Program Manager

The Annual Army Community Service (ACS)

Recognition Program presents an Installation

Award of Excellence and Individual Award of

Excellence in each installation size Category

(A-Large, B-Medium, C-Small and D-Extra Small.)

The awardees (winners) for CY 2014 were

selected based upon the merit of outstanding

accomplishments which improve and sustain

quality ACS programs and services to strengthen

the resiliency of Soldiers, Families and

Department of the Army Civilians.

A selection panel comprised of IMCOM G9

and Region personnel reviewed and assigned

a numerical score to each individual and

installation nomination packet. The numerical

scores of each panel member were then

combined for a total numerical score. The

highest (top) numerical score for the individual

and installation nominations determined the

selected awardees (winners) for the respective

category.

Joe Pagan, Employment Readiness Program

Manager at the U.S. Army Garrison-Miami,

was selected for the 2014 Individual Award of

Excellence for a Category D (population less

than 6,000) installation. Joe was selected based

on the following criteria:

• He identified novel approaches to deliver

services or provide outreach with limited

resources as well as creative solutions to

meet the needs of the installation.

• He took action to improve or enhance

services or programs as well and identified

new ideas, prevention strategies, solutions

or directions in dealing with daily

significance to the installation and to the

community.

Joe is a truly outstanding, hard-working

employee deserving of this recognition. It

demonstrates the level of his commitment

not only to spouses seeking employment but

also to those service members who are in the

process of transitioning from military to civilian

employment. Joe has been a member of the

ACS Miami staff since 2005 and is a definite

asset to the Miami ACS Center.

Many thanks to our generous sponsors for

supporting this event! The Department of Defense does not

The Family and Morale, Wellness and Recreation

(FMWR) Fitness Center hosted their first Body

Building/Physique Competition on 1 August,

2015 in the fitness center. The categories

were bodybuilding, bikini and physique. The

bodybuilders appear in lineups doing specified

poses, and later perform individual posing

routines. All contestants posed for a panel of

judges who rank competitors based on criteria

such as symmetry, muscularity and conditioning.

The physique category is relatively new,

beginning in about 2011 in the bodybuilding

circuit. Although it was met with jokes and

criticism at first, it’s since become a legitimate

division especially among some great athletes.

In the physique division, judges look for fit

contestants who display proper shape and

symmetry combined with muscularity and

overall condition. This is not like bodybuilding so,

extreme muscularity is marked down.

The bikini division is about looking good in

a bikini with not so visible muscles, as those

competing in bodybuilding and physique. Their

muscles are not as defined, yet their bodies are

well-toned.

Approximately 20 contestants participated

in the FMWR Fitness Center Bodybuilding

and Physique competition, four of whom

work here at the United States Southern

Command (USSOUTHCOM) and one active

duty Marine recruiter. The competition was

close and all the participants looked fabulously

fit. Congratulations to all the participants. The

show was a great success and we hope to host

another show next year. For more information

regarding the competition or anything related to

bodybuilding and fitness, please contact Frank

Same at 305.437.1152.

USSOUTHCOM participants:

Nikki Tilly - 1st place Female Bikini

The Zip Code Groups at USSOUTHCOM are organized by place of residence and offer an opportunity to meet new friends. The groups also provide a channel for spouses to get information about what happens at the command and in the surrounding civilian communities. The Zip Code Groups are a means of social interaction and camaraderie for spouses similar to that provided by the Officers and Enlisted Spouses Groups located on traditional military bases. The Zip Code Groups are organized in Broward and Miami-Dade Counties. For additional information, contact Army Community Service at 305.437.2644 or one of the Zip Code Group Coordinators listed below:
