NEW BUGLE

WEBSITEA new website for the Benwick Bugle has now been launched. Visitors to the website can access an archive of past editions of the Benwick Bugle, which thanks to former editor Jane Levicki, will soon go back to the very first edition in 2006.

Also on the website are the advertising/contribution deadlines for future editions, as well other information on how to contribute to the Bugle.

If you have friends or family who want to keep up with the latest in the village, send them to the website where they can read the latest editions online. The website will also feature articles from the Bugle, plus exclusive online content that couldn’t make it into the magazine. •

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

Over many months now the residents of Benwick have had to put up with dogs barking and howling which sometimes has been persistent for hours during the day, most of the evening, and even during the middle of the night. During these hot periods that we have been experiencing, most of us have had our windows open to keep us cool and aid our sleeping but this has not always been possible due to the persistent barking of these dogs. Many young children are unable to get to sleep or are woken up by the barking so parents are having their relaxation time inter-rupted to comfort the children and when they go to bed they can’t sleep either.

Surely these dog owners are aware that this may be happening in and around where they live and as the barking is very loud I would imagine most of the village could be woken up by these dogs, I say dogs because when one starts others quite often follow suit.

Please dog owners this column

is hopefully making you aware of the problems caused by barking dogs and that you may try to train them not to bark constantly but only when necessary and not for no reason.

I have found a website that may help deal with this without incurring any costs to the dog owners which is: bit.ly/1a7I9vw . I hope this helps so we can have a relatively peaceful environment. •

[Ed- You can read the full letter on the new Benwick Bugle website, www.benwickbugle.co.uk]

If you have something to say, then you can e-mail the Bugle on [email protected] or via letter to 1 Lilyholt Road.

My name is Debbie Scott & I live/lived at 11, Chapel Gardens. I would like just to thank absolutely everyone for their kindness & support for the arson attack on my & formerly Gerald’s lovely home. Especially the man in the red T-Shirt, (I apologise for not getting his name, (Paul?), who was at my gate when I virtually threw my Pudd (dog), in his arms. I am temporarily being re-housed by Roddens who have been so very helpful.

Thank-you to Everyone again.& I apologise to my nearest neighbours for all of the inconvenience. •

NEW SHOP FOR BENWICK

Planning permission has been granted for a new village shop, on the corner of Lilyholt Road and the High Street. Bharat Sisodiya, who runs the shop in Manea spoke to The Benwick Bugle about his plans for a new shop.

“I want to open a shop in Benwick because I like small villages and the village way of life as people are always friendly and have a very close community.” Bharat said. Benwick is also not too far from Manea for me to run the two businesses.”

The shop, which Bharat hopes will open early next year, will be the first village shop since the old shop and post office closed in August 2007.

The building will include two small flats, and work is hoped to start by the end of September. Like his Ma-nea store, Bharat has indicated the shop will be a Londis.

“The store will be a convenience shop and sell a range of everyday shopping including fresh fruit and veg, frozen food, greeting cards, newspapers, off licence alcohol, medicines and national lottery too” Bharat continued.

“It will also include a Pay Point where villagers will be able to pay bills, and we are looking into the Post Office after we open – but I cannot promise if I will get permission for this.”

The Bugle will keep you updated as the village gets closer to once again having a village store. •

CYCLE RACE TO COME AGAIN

The organisers of the cycle race which flew through the village in June are hoping to stage a second race in June 2014.

Fenland District Councillor Gary Swan told the Cambs Times: “Many of the racers said that racing in the Fens was completely different to what they were used to.”

“We are already starting to organise next year’s event, which we hope will be bigger and better with more teams and riders”

“For a first time event we felt it went really well, and the teams who took part were over the moon with it” •

ART BY ANITA

Talented local artist Anita Davies has had her sketchbook out in Benwick again, this time with a painitng showing the site of the new village shop.

Anita posted the painting on her online blog and one of the Benwick facebook groups with the caption “The old shed behind the memorial was demolished a couple of weeks after sketching this scene, to make way for a shop. Glad I managed to capture the ‘before’ and hope to go back and capture the ‘after’ once the shop is built.”

PCSO REPORTLocal PCSO Sally Mitchell has provided the latest policing information for the village. In August the police were called to Fields View for Criminal Damage when a window was broken, whilst on the High Street there was the theft of a bike. Many people are most likely aware of the arson attack down Chapel Gardens, following which a 15 year old from March was arrested.

Police were called to Alpha Close following a property being egged.

Sally also carried out ‘speedwatch’ in the village on the 7th August where 42 vehicles were logged and 3 offenders reported exceeding the 30mph speed limit along Doddington Road.

It was repeated again on August 22nd where 120 vehicles were logged, but this time no offenders caught speeding.

On 23rd August Sally carried out cycle-coding to protect bicycles against theft, where four people came to get their bikes coded. •

THE VILLAGE HALL

by Pat Tickner

The trustees of the village hall are, in the main, getting on in years now and we would appeal for some younger people to join us and perhaps give us a lead on what events would appeal to the youth in our village. Anyone over the age of 18 can become a trustee and give some time to encouraging the use of the hall. Most of the evenings are used by scouts, Tang su do and Forget me Nots, with the school using the hall most days during term time as a gym for the children but there are times such as some Friday, Saturday and Sunday eve-nings when extra events can be arranged.

We will be trying out the cinema again in late September or October and if there is any film that you would like to see please let one of the trustees know.

The main events coming up in the next couple of months are on page 10.

I do hope that we will see more of you at our events and look forward to seeing you at our Harvest Supper

Any of the trustees will be pleased to give you further details of this evening and take your bookings for any of the events listed above

I do hope that you have all enjoyed a good holiday over the summer especially with the weather being so kind to us.•

Results from the 2011 census show that the population of Benwick has risen 32% in 10 years from 860 in 2001 to 1137 in 2011. The popula-tion rise is most likely due to the two new developments of Fields View and Heron Way.

According to the census, Benwick had 548 males and 589 females, with a population density of 0.9 people per hectare.

This is the first time the popula-tion has passed 1000. In 1801, the first recorded population statistic shows Benwick had a population of 346, which changed little until 1821 when it was recorded at 514. By 1851 it had increased to 850, and it continued to fluctuate between 700 and 850 for the next 150 years. The village now has double the number of residents it had 30 years ago.•

Judging for the Anglia in Bloom competition took place on Tuesday 9th July. A full presentation was held at the Five Alls, displaying a complete portfolio of Benwick in Bloom from July 2012 onwards.

The judges were very impressed with all our endeavours and showed particular interest in the school project and gardening club, where they met several of the children.

BENWICK IN BLOOM

FORGET-ME-NOTSby Janet Fountain

First of all thank you to everybody who bought a copy of the photo quiz and well done to all those who returned them. The winner was Shirley Murrell of 13 High Street, who scored 90. The full answers are on page 33.

Our July meeting was a quiz fol-lowed by cheese and wine and this was very well attended. In August the speaker was Mr. Chris Donaldson from the East Anglian Air Ambulance. He was both informative and interesting and made us aware of the need to raise funds for this facility which anyone of us could benefit from at anytime.

Recent outings have been to Caithness Crystal at Kings Lynn and on to Hunstanton for the afternoon and Highclere Castle (Downton Abbey) in Berkshire. The latter was really well supported and we had an excellent day out.

Numbers were down for the Tea Dance but those who went enjoyed a cream tea and a great time. We had an afternoon mystery tour and meal out on August 21st, and our Harvest Festival was held on 5th

September. On 18th September tenpin bowling has been arranged at Guyhirn and on 3rd October the meeting will be a sausage supper with entertainment – this costs just £5.

In November we have an outing to Wicksteed Park on the 21st. This includes a lunch, Christmas Show and afternoon tea. The cost is £30 for members, and £31 for non-members.

We welcome new members and visitors are welcome. All of our outings are open to all, so if you would like to come along please give me a call on 677 228.•

In August two of our Scouts (Chris Beevor and Luca Fiore) hiked the Scout Trail from Brownsea Island (where Baden-Powell held the very first Scout camp) to the national Scout HQ at Gilwell Park, near Epping. The total distance covered was 220 miles, with overnight stops at scout campsites and scout huts along the way. This was a joint expedition with 10 other Scouts from 2nd March Scout troop.

The expedition was a great success with all the Scouts completing the hike.Though they did do most of the journey on a riverbus on the Thames – I think that’s cheating as I spent most of that day in the van stuck in traffic on the M25!

Graham Stribley, Vanessa Grange, Courtney Stribley and Jamie Wilding from 2nd March and Benwick Group Scout Leader Rod Glen provided adult support for the expedition, navigating and accompanying the walkers, transporting all the heavy kit from site to site and cooking the meals. Intercounty Tuck & Van of Peterborough generously provided

the use of a Mercedes van free of charge for the two week expedition. We would like to thank them for their generosity.

Chris and Luca gained sponsorship and raised nearly £700 which will be split between the Scout Group and the Association for Young People with ME.

We are still seeking dynamic and en-thusiastic people to be Group Chair-man, a Treasurer and leaders to help with Scouts.

Every the Scout Association helps 400,000 young people in the UK enjoy new adventures; to experience the outdoors; interact with others, gain confidence and have the opportunity to reach their full potential. Scouting is about doing great things, loving and enjoying the great adventures and helping others to do the same. So what are you waiting for? Join the adventure today and make a difference! •

BENWICK HEALTHby Whittlesey Osteopaths

This month we will be looking at various types of headaches and how they present differently. We hope the knowledge gained will help you understand your symptoms better.

Headaches can be divided into primary and secondary types. Primary headaches are not associated with an underlying health problem, whilst secondary headaches are attributed to various health problem, alcohol or medication. There are 3 main types of primary headache:

Cervicogenic (cervico-neck, genic-originating): Patients describe these as a non-throbbing ache over one side of the head. This is caused by irritation of joints in your neck due to wear and tear, bad posture, sleeping or minor trauma. Hence, neck movements aggravate the headache.

Tension Patients describe these as a dull ache with constant pressure around the front, top and sides of the head. Bad posture, stress or even pent up anger can increase tension in the neck and

scalp muscles resulting in a tension headache.

MigrainesPatients describe these as a severe pounding or throbbing pain on one or both sides of the head. There tends to be an awareness of a headache aris-ing and maybe associated with visual or audio disturbances. There is no clear cause, although the main theory is related to the control of the smaller blood vessels that supply the brain and its covering. Osteopathy helps by removing any tension in the muscles or stiffness in the joints that are linked to the head, we are able to improve the blood flow to and from the head, release any tension in the nerves which supply the head or neck. allow the head/neck to move easier and reduce any strain pat-terns into the head/neck.

In addition, we also work with you to, where necessary, modify your lifestyle to manage the headaches better. Improvements in any one of these areas will help your body cope with the headache better, thus reducing your symptoms. We do not propose a miracle cure, our aim is simply to maximize your bodies potential. Your body will do the rest. •

BENWICK LADIES CLUBby Brenda Richards

The Ladies Club had a great evening in July listening to some strange and funny stories of life in the Fens from Polly Howatt.

This include some interesting facts on childbirth. Did you know that women living in remote locations would often summon help from dis-tant neighbours by hanging a white sheet out of their windows? Women were also given poppy cake to eat during childbirth – so no doubt they ended up as high as a kite. I do wonder if this was followed by the babies suffering withdrawal symp-toms!

We did not meet in August, but are now anticipating an enjoyable time seeing a slideshow and hearing a talk from the head gardener at Peckover House on September 16th at 7:30pm. Wine is on the menu on October 21st with a Wine Tasting and Harvest Supper lead by Carl Gobie. We welcome new members and visitors at any time. It’s only £2.50 for a normal meeting, or £3.00 for a meeting with catering.•

‘RITINGS FROM THE RECTORY

Rev Kevin Fitzgibbon

Have you got questions about life? Many of us have big unresolved questions ‘what am I doing here?’ or ‘what is life really all about?’ and many others like these. Often we are too busy living life, trying to keep up, that we tend to ignore the big picture and live for the minute or the day. If we are honest those big questions are important and they nag away at us in the background.

Well, we have good news for you, the famous world renowned Alpha Course is coming to our group of churches starting in October. Twenty million people up and down our land and around the world have attended an Alpha Course and have found it to be a great place to ask those big questions and to see how Jesus can provide some answers that really make sense in today’s world.

Alpha provides a safe and friendly place to explore the Christian faith and ask questions big or small. There will be a taster evening on Thursday 3rd October in St. Peter’s Church at Wimblington addressing

the question ‘Is there more to life than this?’ you can then if you wish sign up to attend the Alpha Course for the next ten weeks on Thursday evenings in St. Peter’s.

The format of an Alpha evening is we start with a cooked meal, then a talk by a national Christian teacher from a big London church, followed by a chance to ask your questions and discuss the evening’s theme. For some Alpha has proved to be literally life transforming, for some a dormant or part formed Christian faith has burst into life, for others they find themselves better informed and to have had a good experience.

There is no charge for attending the Alpha course but we are happy to receive donations towards the cost of putting it on. If you are interested why not come along to the taster evening at 7pm on Thursday 3rd October in St. Peter’s church, Wimblington.

We need you to get in touch and book your place for catering purpos-es, to do so or for more information please email me [email protected] or telephone me on 01354 680969.

I hope to see you on Alpha. •

Continuing our look at the pubs which once lined the High Street, this month we are looking at the Bell Inn. Reputedly it was once known as the Blue Bell.

The Bell was a thatched beer house which was only a couple of doors down from the Boot and Slipper. In Florence Sismey’s memoirs, she suggests that it may have been one of the oldest village inns.

The first recorded landlord was Thomas Chapman in 1871, although the pub was clearly much older. It soon passed into the hands of Alfred and Edith Stokes.

The Stokes family ran the Inn for over 50 years, as it passed to Charles Stokes in the early 1900’s. •

Florence Sismey also recalled that iron hooks, with shafts around 12ft long were kept at the Bell. These were used for pulling the burning thatch from buildings in the village. In 1908 a clubhouse was added to the building.

The pub closed in the mid-twentieth century, but the building remains – Bell House, 4 High St. •
