EDITORIAL

Welcome to your new look Benwick Bugle! Jane Levicki has decided that

due to other commitments, she no longer has time to give the Bugle the attention it needed, and has handed the running of it over to me.

I will be keeping the Bugle much the same as it was under Jane’s owner-ship, but will be making a few changes – which you can read about on page 5.

This is your community magazine, and I welcome any contributions to the Bugle, and would like to increase the input from the village, from photo-graphs, suggestions for content and reviews on recent events. I will be try-ing out a few things in the Bugle which I hope you will like.

I am sure everyone agrees that Jane did a fantastic job setting up the Bugle and running it the past few years, and I hope that I am able to continue its success.

The new Lilyholt Road Banner

Lilyholt Road is one of the two websites dedicated to the vil-lage, and has been online since

September 2007. On April 1st the website was given a complete make-over and redevelopment. Moving on from using Dreamweaver to create the website, it has been professionally redeveloped by Refined Line Web De-velopment, which I run with my friend James Matthews. It now benefits from a number of great new features, and making updates to the website is even easier than before.

A forum has been added, so that people can discuss events and other village matters online. I hope that it will become well used, all you need to do is sign up with an account and you can begin posting. There is a news blog which will feature regular posts whenever there is anything going on that affects the village and new up-dates are added to the website.

You can find pages for all the village groups online and all the information

on the website has been revisited, and fully updated. New Image Galleries have been included, so there is now more photographs and they are easier to browse.

There is a section of the website dedicated to the Parish council, and you will be able to find minutes and agendas on there for meetings, as well as contact details.

A special banner was painted by Lyndsey Green (www.lyndseygreen.co.uk) and features some of the main landmarks of the village. The web-site also features a great collection of artwork by local artist, Anita Davies. If any other local artists would like their paintings of Benwick featured on the website, I would love to have them.

As with the Bugle, all suggestions, comments and contributions are hugely appreciated.

Changes to the Bugle

I am bringing about a number of changes to the Bugle, which I hope will make it better for ev-

eryone. The first of these changes can be seen in this edition - a few new sections. Firstly there is the His-tory section, which will contain old news articles, photographs and other information on the History of Ben-wick. There is a Gardening section, to try and encourage you to get out into your gardens and begin growing your own flowers, fruit and vegetables. Finally, there is listings of some of the films coming out in the next couple of months. I will be compiling event list-ings for Benwick and the

surrounding area, if you know of any events in June and July - let me know so they are included in the next edi-tion. I will be changing the dates that the Bugle is published too, the 2011 publication dates are printed on page 21. Finally, alongside redeveloping the Lilyholt Road website, the Benwick Bugle website is having an overhaul too. Take a visit and you will be able to access online editions, contacts for past advertisers and event listings from around the area.

What are your opinions on the chang-es made? Let me know!

Page 6: The Benwick Bugle

6 www.benwickbugle.co.uk

Iwould just like to take this opportu-nity to thank everyone for all their support and encouragement over

the last 4 ½ years. I have very much enjoyed producing the Bugle, but in true Hollywood style, I most certainly couldn’t have done it without you!

The magazine’s success has only been possible thanks to everyone taking the time to submit their news and articles and the businesses and organisations advertising.

A Word from Jane

Local Trades

Coming in the next edition of the Bugle, is a new Local Trades and Services section. This will

contain listings for a number of local businesses which you can use as a reference whenever you need one.

Listings are just £15 per year, which is £2.50 per edition. It includes a listing on the website too. If you run a busi-ness and would like a listing, or you know someone who might - contact me on: [email protected].

Your Views

Every one has an opinion. And I would like to have a section of the Bugle where these opinions

can be aired, and thoughts shared. I would welcome everyones e-mails and letters on any issues, whether it is about the latest goings on of the Parish Council, a fantastic day out you had recently you want people to know about, or a general gripe. This page is your page.

Obviously this section is only going to work if I get contributions from you all. So, how about kicking things of by letting me know what you think about the changes to the Bugle? Anything you can share would be fantastic, so don’t be shy.

I would also like to thank Adam for taking it over so swiftly. I am sure he will do a great job of continuing it, and that you will carry on sending him all your stuff! Best wishes to everyone.

School Governor newsletter

I hope this will be the first in a regular feature of musings and information to appear in the

Benwick Bugle, to inform as wide as possible an audience of our activities at the school.

News from the FloorI would like to extend a public wel-come to our two new Governors, Darren Gore (Parent Governor) and Pat Tickner (Authority Governor). Both have already attended their first meetings and are booked to undertake their induction training so they can fulfil their roles to maximum potential. We do still have a vacancy for a Parent Governor which we must try and fill to work to maximum effect. I am, how-ever, saddened to report the resigna-tion of our Authority Governor, Mrs Michelin, who feels unable to fulfil the role at the moment due to domestic circumstances. I would like to publicly thank her for all her hard work in the time she has been with us and am certain we would not have progressed as far without her efforts. Thank you, Maureen. If you know of anybody in the wider community who would make a good Governor, please ask them to get in touch with me through the school. If we have a wide, diverse range of skills within the Governing Body we are better able to undertake our role.

So what do the Governors do?School Governors (as a collective body) are responsible for ensuring that the school progresses in the cor-rect direction, so that all ‘stakehold-ers’, be they pupils, teachers, parents or the community at large, can be assured that the school will identify any weak areas and work on them to improve. We do this by monitoring how pupils and staff progress towards set goals. The Headteacher comes to us with suggestions as to how she feels progress could be made, and we have to discuss the options and either agree to try them or suggest alterna-tives. We then set goals throughout the year, so we can check our progress towards the final target.

TV in the Dining RoomNo we haven’t gone mad! There really is a TV in the dining room, and another one in the playground. They will not be broadcasting television pro-grammes but displaying short informa-tion films about healthy eating, bully-ing and school safety (for example). It is a system that has been used in the Health Service for a few years with good effect at reinforcing health related messages. It also has a ‘ticker tape’ stream along it which we will be using to pass information to parents and carers.

Page 9: The Benwick Bugle

9www.benwickbugle.co.uk

Child SafetyYour children’s safety is our utmost concern, and we hope it is yours too. We therefore would like to point out certain areas that concern us.

The car park is for staff only. Please do not park, or turn in this area. It is a dangerous area so parents with young children waiting near the gate must ensure their children are con-trolled and do not run into or play in this area.

As the nights are slowly drawing out and the weather is less inclement it is great to see children out and about enjoying the fresh air, but if your child is going to be out on their cycle please ensure they have adequate safety devices – particularly lights – on their vehicles to keep them safe.

Fundraising ActivitiesThe Friends continue to tirelessly raise funds to provide the extras that the school budget cannot afford so please ensure you support them as much as possible. Remember to use www.easyfundraising.org.uk if shopping online (you can even get donations from sites such as eBay) as some of the offers are exceptional. If you have not used it before, you will need to register online, and choose Friends of Benwick School as your preferred organisation, then watch whilst the companies you already use donate to

the Friends. There is also the monthly Prize Draw (which I have yet to win), for the minimal cost of £1 per month. We recycle lots of products to try and earn more pennies to spend on the children; one of our biggest earners is ink cartridges from laser and inkjet printers (except Epson). If you have any expired cartridges please do drop them into school.

With best wishes until next time!

Riverside Mooring

Anyone who has taken a walk down the river recently will no-tice that a large mooring plat-

form has been installed. The project was completed by the Parish Council, in association with the Residents As-sociation and March Watermen Club. It will be officially open at some point in April and more information on it will be in the next issue of the Benwick

Annual Parish Assembly

The annual Parish Assembly is an open meeting of the village, led by the chair of the Parish

Council. This meeting is open to everyone, and is a great way to hear about what the Parish Council has been up to over the past year. Many of the village groups also submit a report of their years activities.

This years meeting is on the 19th April, in the Village Hall at 7:30pm.

The end of 32

Stagecoach announced recently that it would be completely cut-ting its Service 32 from the 17th

April, meaning there is no longer a bus to Peterborough. Instead, anyone needing to get to Peterborough will have to use the Norfolk Green service to March, and change there.

Councillor Pam Potts has de-cided not to stand for the next elections for District council.

She has been a district councillor for 16 years, serving the Benwick Coates and Eastrea ward alongside Ralph Butcher. The Cambs Times rumoured that Alex Miscandlon, another Tory, was set to replace her at the elections in May.

Benwick has had a number of Oil thefts over the past couple of months. The police have advised

that you invest in padlocks, which can be a small deterrent. Oil level gauges - alarms which go off when a sudden drop occurs and to use “defensive planting” prickly shrubs which are hard to get through. Friends of Benwick School Update Chicken farmers in Benwick

were made to suffer by the presence of a fox in the village.

Mr Chas Simsey visited his poultry one Monday to find 42 of his chickens were lying in various parts of the field, many of them minus their heads. As soon as the news leaked out several villagers who had poultry on stubbles went the same evening to safeguard theirs as far as possible. These pre-cautions were insufficient for Mr Ben Savage, who had the misfortune to lose 25 between the Monday evening and Tuesday morning. It was proposed that a party be set up to draw the Coleseed, belonging to Mr Geo Berry, where it was believed the fox was hid-ing.

From the Vaults

The new leaders are nearly ready, they’re fired up and full of enthusiasm and we’ve start-

ed planning the activities to run. We’re getting everything in place ready to start after the Easter school holiday.

We will be publicising the start date through the school, leaflets / post-ers around the village, on the Lilyholt Road website, and the Ben Wick face-book page.

By the time you read this I shall have moved into my retirement bungalow in South Wales - is

this the last journey in life?

I sincerely hope so. From the moment we are born until the second we die we are all on a journey. There is a chil-dren’s chorus entitled ‘It’s an adven-ture following Jesus’ and for most part if we put our trust in our Creator then it is an adventure. Like any adventure story or film there are painful times as well as fun and excitement. It was an adventure coming to work and live in the Benefice of Doddington with Ben-wick and Wimblington. Some of it has been fun and exciting as I met lots of lovely people, many of whom I worked alongside in varying ways.

It’s been great to see people blossom when they realised God had given them many gifts which they hadn’t realised they had-one person springs immediately to mind when I asked her if she could write a puppet script for Time 4t-needless to say she’s probably got a job for life writing scripts! So many lovely people have supported Peter and me and, of course, our min-istry, which is an integral part of us.

Thank you to all who have given encouragement. Alongside fun and excitement is of course, pain and sadly

‘Ritings from the Rectorythere has been a great deal of that as well but Jesus never promised an easy life.

We are approaching the season of Easter when we remember the penul-timate journey Jesus made – the walk to the cross. On that journey Jesus was accompanied part way by his disciples, He deliberately walked into dangerous territory where his enemies plotted and schemed against him, He who had done no wrong was found guilty and led to his death, death on a cross but that was not the end. Fortunately for us Good Friday is followed by Easter Sunday – the day Jesus rose from the dead, offering the gift of eternal life to all who turn to him, repent of their sins and follow Him.

It’s an adventure following Jesus; it’s an adventure learning of Him. It’s an adventure living for Jesus; it’s an ad-venture following Him. Let’s go where He leads us, turn away from wrong; for we know we can trust Him to help us as we go along.

Enjoy your journey.

Rev’d Val

In the Garden

This new section is sponsored by Delphland Nurseries (see the advert) and aims to get you into the garden. Everyone can find some room to grow some veg, fruit or just a few flowers.

Think this section could be done better? How about writing it yourself?

If you have any tips or guides for the Garden then please get in touch -

I welcome any comments and suggestions!

Strawberries - one of the most popu-lar fruits that can be grown with ease. You will be able to find strawberry plants in all the garden centres now, and it is a great time to plant them out into your garden.

If you have room for them in the ground, then great, but they can also be grown easily in containers. There are a number of different containers which perfectly suit strawberries, such as the one pictured right. If growing them in a container, ensure that water can drain since strawberries hate waterlogged soil. Ideally, position your container in full sun, and away from the wind.

Keep an eye out for slugs - which like to munch on the strawberries, and birds which can quickly steal your crop. Protect the plants with netting it possible to keep the birds at bay. To deter slugs, put down slug pellets, or broken egg shells.

You will know when strawberries are ready due to their distinctive red. Pick them straight away to stop them rot-ting on the plant.

At Lourish, you can swap surplus fruit and veg for free. You can also trade your eggs, chutneys, pickles, plants and seeds. Take a look at the website to find out more.
